[rv-7-86] • 8 श्लोकाः

धीरा त्वस्य महिना जनूंषि वि यस्तस्तम्भ रोदसी चिदुर्वी । प्र नाकमृष्वं नुनुदे बृहन्तं द्विता नक्षत्रं पप्रथच्च भूम ॥

dhīrā tvasya mahinā janūṃṣi vi yastastambha rodasī cidurvī | pra nākamṛṣvaṃ nunude bṛhantaṃ dvitā nakṣatraṃ paprathacca bhūma ||

Permanent in greatness are the births of that Varuṇa who propped up the vast heaven and earth, whoappointed to (their) two-fold (task) the glorious sun and beautiful constellations, who spread out the earth.

उत स्वया तन्वा सं वदे तत्कदा न्वन्तर्वरुणे भुवानि । किं मे हव्यमहृणानो जुषेत कदा मृऴीकं सुमना अभि ख्यम् ॥

uta svayā tanvā saṃ vade tatkadā nvantarvaruṇe bhuvāni | kiṃ me havyamahṛṇāno juṣeta kadā mṛḻīkaṃ sumanā abhi khyam ||

When may I in my person n converse with the deity? When may I (be admitted) to the heart of Varuṇa?By what means may he, without displeasure, accept my oblation? When may I, rejoicing in mind, behold thatgiver of felicity?

पृच्छे तदेनो वरुण दिदृक्षूपो एमि चिकितुषो विपृच्छम् । समानमिन्मे कवयश्चिदाहुरयं ह तुभ्यं वरुणो हृणीते ॥

pṛcche tadeno varuṇa didṛkṣūpo emi cikituṣo vipṛccham | samānaminme kavayaścidāhurayaṃ ha tubhyaṃ varuṇo hṛṇīte ||

Desirous of beholding you, Varuṇa, I inquire what is my offence; I have gone to make inquiry of thewise; the sages verily have said the same thing to me: -- this Varuṇa is displeased with you.

किमाग आस वरुण ज्येष्ठं यत्स्तोतारं जिघांससि सखायम् । प्र तन्मे वोचो दूऴभ स्वधावोऽव त्वानेना नमसा तुर इयाम् ॥

kimāga āsa varuṇa jyeṣṭhaṃ yatstotāraṃ jighāṃsasi sakhāyam | pra tanme voco dūḻabha svadhāvo'va tvānenā namasā tura iyām ||

What has that great wickedness been, Varuṇa, that you should seek to destroy the worshiper, yourfriend? Insuperable, resplendent Varuṇa, declare it to me, so that, freed from sin, I may quick approach you withveneration.

अव द्रुग्धानि पित्र्या सृजा नोऽव या वयं चकृमा तनूभिः । अव राजन्पशुतृपं न तायुं सृजा वत्सं न दाम्नो वसिष्ठम् ॥

ava drugdhāni pitryā sṛjā no'va yā vayaṃ cakṛmā tanūbhiḥ | ava rājanpaśutṛpaṃ na tāyuṃ sṛjā vatsaṃ na dāmno vasiṣṭham ||

Relax (the bonds) imosed by all the ill deeds of our fore-fathers, and those incurred (by the sins) whichwe have committed in our person ns; liberate, royal Varuṇa, like a calf from its tether, Vasiṣṭha like a thiefnourishing the animal (he has stolen).

न स स्वो दक्षो वरुण ध्रुतिः सा सुरा मन्युर्विभीदको अचित्तिः । अस्ति ज्यायान्कनीयस उपारे स्वप्नश्चनेदनृतस्य प्रयोता ॥

na sa svo dakṣo varuṇa dhrutiḥ sā surā manyurvibhīdako acittiḥ | asti jyāyānkanīyasa upāre svapnaścanedanṛtasya prayotā ||

It is not our own choice, Varuṇa, not our condition, (that is the cause of our sinning); it is that which isintoxication, wrath, gambling, ignorance; there is a senior in the proximity of the junior; even a dream is aprovocation to sin.

अरं दासो न मीऴ्हुषे कराण्यहं देवाय भूर्णयेऽनागाः । अचेतयदचितो देवो अर्यो गृत्सं राये कवितरो जुनाति ॥

araṃ dāso na mīḻhuṣe karāṇyahaṃ devāya bhūrṇaye'nāgāḥ | acetayadacito devo aryo gṛtsaṃ rāye kavitaro junāti ||

Liberated from sin, I may perform diligent service, like a slave, to the divine showerer (of benefits), thesustainer of the world; may he, the divine lord, give intelligence to us who are devoid of understanding; may hewho is most wise, guide the worshipper to wealth.

अयं सु तुभ्यं वरुण स्वधावो हृदि स्तोम उपश्रितश्चिदस्तु । शं नः क्षेमे शमु योगे नो अस्तु यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥

ayaṃ su tubhyaṃ varuṇa svadhāvo hṛdi stoma upaśritaścidastu | śaṃ naḥ kṣeme śamu yoge no astu yūyaṃ pāta svastibhiḥ sadā naḥ ||

May this laudation, food-conferring Varuṇa, be taken to your heart; may success be ours in retainingwhat we have, and in acquiring more; and do you, (deities), ever cherish us with blessings.
