[rv-8-1] • 34 श्लोकाः

मा चिदन्यद्वि शंसत सखायो मा रिषण्यत । इन्द्रमित्स्तोता वृषणं सचा सुते मुहुरुक्था च शंसत ॥

mā cidanyadvi śaṃsata sakhāyo mā riṣaṇyata | indramitstotā vṛṣaṇaṃ sacā sute muhurukthā ca śaṃsata ||

Repeat, friends, no other praise, be not hurtful (to yourselves); praise together Indra, the showerer (ofbenefits) when the Soma is effused; repeately utter praise (to him).

अवक्रक्षिणं वृषभं यथाजुरं गां न चर्षणीसहम् । विद्वेषणं संवननोभयंकरं मंहिष्ठमुभयाविनम् ॥

avakrakṣiṇaṃ vṛṣabhaṃ yathājuraṃ gāṃ na carṣaṇīsaham | vidveṣaṇaṃ saṃvananobhayaṃkaraṃ maṃhiṣṭhamubhayāvinam ||

A bull rushing (upon his foes), undecaying, like an ox, the overcomer of (hostile) men, the hater (ofadversaries), the venerable, the displayer of both (enmity and favour), the munificent, the distributor of both(celestial and terrestrial riches).

यच्चिद्धि त्वा जना इमे नाना हवन्त ऊतये । अस्माकं ब्रह्मेदमिन्द्र भूतु तेऽहा विश्वा च वर्धनम् ॥

yacciddhi tvā janā ime nānā havanta ūtaye | asmākaṃ brahmedamindra bhūtu te'hā viśvā ca vardhanam ||

Although these people worship you, Indra, in many ways to (secure) your protection, (yet) may this ourprayer be throughout all days your magnification.

वि तर्तूर्यन्ते मघवन्विपश्चितोऽर्यो विपो जनानाम् । उप क्रमस्व पुरुरूपमा भर वाजं नेदिष्ठमूतये ॥

vi tartūryante maghavanvipaścito'ryo vipo janānām | upa kramasva pururūpamā bhara vājaṃ nediṣṭhamūtaye ||

The sages (your worshippers), Maghavan, the overcomers (of foes), the terrifiers of (hostile) people,pass over various (calamities by your aid); come near and bring manysorts of food, and available for ourpreservation.

महे चन त्वामद्रिवः परा शुल्काय देयाम् । न सहस्राय नायुताय वज्रिवो न शताय शतामघ ॥

mahe cana tvāmadrivaḥ parā śulkāya deyām | na sahasrāya nāyutāya vajrivo na śatāya śatāmagha ||

Wielder of the thunderbolt, I would not sell you for a large price, not for a thousand, nor for tenthousand, nor, opulent bearer of the thunderbolt, for a hundred.

वस्याँ इन्द्रासि मे पितुरुत भ्रातुरभुञ्जतः । माता च मे छदयथः समा वसो वसुत्वनाय राधसे ॥

vasyā~ indrāsi me pituruta bhrāturabhuñjataḥ | mātā ca me chadayathaḥ samā vaso vasutvanāya rādhase ||

You are more precious, Indra, than my father, or than my brother, who is not affectionate; you, giver ofdwellings, are equal to my mother, for you both render me distinguished on account of celebrity and riches.

क्वेयथ क्वेदसि पुरुत्रा चिद्धि ते मनः । अलर्षि युध्म खजकृत्पुरंदर प्र गायत्रा अगासिषुः ॥

kveyatha kvedasi purutrā ciddhi te manaḥ | alarṣi yudhma khajakṛtpuraṃdara pra gāyatrā agāsiṣuḥ ||

Where have you gone? Where, indeed, are you now? Verily your mind (wanders) among many(worshippers); martial, valorous Purandara, come here; the chanters are singing (your praise).

प्रास्मै गायत्रमर्चत वावातुर्यः पुरंदरः । याभिः काण्वस्योप बर्हिरासदं यासद्वज्री भिनत्पुरः ॥

prāsmai gāyatramarcata vāvāturyaḥ puraṃdaraḥ | yābhiḥ kāṇvasyopa barhirāsadaṃ yāsadvajrī bhinatpuraḥ ||

Raise the sacred chant to him who is the destroyer of the cities (of the foes) of his worshipper,(induced) by which may the thunderer come to sit down at the sacrifice of the sons of Kaṇva, and destroy thecities (of their enemies).

ये ते सन्ति दशग्विनः शतिनो ये सहस्रिणः । अश्वासो ये ते वृषणो रघुद्रुवस्तेभिर्नस्तूयमा गहि ॥

ye te santi daśagvinaḥ śatino ye sahasriṇaḥ | aśvāso ye te vṛṣaṇo raghudruvastebhirnastūyamā gahi ||

Come quickly with those your horses which are vigorous and fleet, and which are traversers of tens, orhundreds, or thousands (of leagues).

आ त्वद्य सबर्दुघां हुवे गायत्रवेपसम् । इन्द्रं धेनुं सुदुघामन्यामिषमुरुधारामरंकृतम् ॥

ā tvadya sabardughāṃ huve gāyatravepasam | indraṃ dhenuṃ sudughāmanyāmiṣamurudhārāmaraṃkṛtam ||

I invoke today the all-sufficient Indra, as the milch cow yielding abundant milk, of excellent motion, andeasy to be milked; or, as another (form), the vast-dropping, desirable (rain).

यत्तुदत्सूर एतशं वङ्कू वातस्य पर्णिना । वहत्कुत्समार्जुनेयं शतक्रतुः त्सरद्गन्धर्वमस्तृतम् ॥

yattudatsūra etaśaṃ vaṅkū vātasya parṇinā | vahatkutsamārjuneyaṃ śatakratuḥ tsaradgandharvamastṛtam ||

When Sūrya harassed Etaśa, Śatakratu conveyed (to his aid) Kutsa, the son of Arjuni, with his twoprancing horses (swift) as the wind, and stealthily approached the irresistible Gandharva.

य ऋते चिदभिश्रिषः पुरा जत्रुभ्य आतृदः । संधाता संधिं मघवा पुरूवसुरिष्कर्ता विह्रुतं पुनः ॥

ya ṛte cidabhiśriṣaḥ purā jatrubhya ātṛdaḥ | saṃdhātā saṃdhiṃ maghavā purūvasuriṣkartā vihrutaṃ punaḥ ||

He who without healing materials before the flow of blood from the necks was the effecter of there-union, the opulent Maghavan, again makes whole the dissevered (parts).

मा भूम निष्ट्या इवेन्द्र त्वदरणा इव । वनानि न प्रजहितान्यद्रिवो दुरोषासो अमन्महि ॥

mā bhūma niṣṭyā ivendra tvadaraṇā iva | vanāni na prajahitānyadrivo duroṣāso amanmahi ||

May we never be like the abject, Indra, through your favour, nor suffer affliction; may we never be likebranchless trees; for, thunderer, unconsumable (by foes) we glorify you.

अमन्महीदनाशवोऽनुग्रासश्च वृत्रहन् । सकृत्सु ते महता शूर राधसा अनु स्तोमं मुदीमहि ॥

amanmahīdanāśavo'nugrāsaśca vṛtrahan | sakṛtsu te mahatā śūra rādhasā anu stomaṃ mudīmahi ||

Neither rash nor irate, we verily glorify you, slayer of Vṛtra, may we propitiate you, hero, for once (atleast) by our praise with great (sacrificial) wealth.

यदि स्तोमं मम श्रवदस्माकमिन्द्रमिन्दवः । तिरः पवित्रं ससृवांस आशवो मन्दन्तु तुग्र्यावृधः ॥

yadi stomaṃ mama śravadasmākamindramindavaḥ | tiraḥ pavitraṃ sasṛvāṃsa āśavo mandantu tugryāvṛdhaḥ ||

If he hear our praise, then may our libations, flowing through the filter, dropping quickly, and diluted withconsecrated water, exhilarate Indra.

आ त्वद्य सधस्तुतिं वावातुः सख्युरा गहि । उपस्तुतिर्मघोनां प्र त्वावत्वधा ते वश्मि सुष्टुतिम् ॥

ā tvadya sadhastutiṃ vāvātuḥ sakhyurā gahi | upastutirmaghonāṃ pra tvāvatvadhā te vaśmi suṣṭutim ||

Come quickly to-day to the collected laudation of your devoted friend; may the subsidiary praise ofwealthy (worshippers) reach you, but now I wish (to offer) your complete eulogy.

सोता हि सोममद्रिभिरेमेनमप्सु धावत । गव्या वस्त्रेव वासयन्त इन्नरो निर्धुक्षन्वक्षणाभ्यः ॥

sotā hi somamadribhiremenamapsu dhāvata | gavyā vastreva vāsayanta innaro nirdhukṣanvakṣaṇābhyaḥ ||

Extract the Soma with the bruising stones, wash it with the consecrated waters; (for by so doing) theleaders (of the rain, the Maruts) clothing (the sky with clouds) as with vesture of the hide of the cow, milk, forth(the water) for the rivers.

अध ज्मो अध वा दिवो बृहतो रोचनादधि । अया वर्धस्व तन्वा गिरा ममा जाता सुक्रतो पृण ॥

adha jmo adha vā divo bṛhato rocanādadhi | ayā vardhasva tanvā girā mamā jātā sukrato pṛṇa ||

Whether come from the earth or the firmament, or the vast luminous (heaven), be magnified by this maydiffusive praise; satisfy, Śatakratu, (my) people.

इन्द्राय सु मदिन्तमं सोमं सोता वरेण्यम् । शक्र एणं पीपयद्विश्वया धिया हिन्वानं न वाजयुम् ॥

indrāya su madintamaṃ somaṃ sotā vareṇyam | śakra eṇaṃ pīpayadviśvayā dhiyā hinvānaṃ na vājayum ||

Pour out to Indra the most exhilarating, the most excellent Soma, for Śakra cherishes him who isdesirous of food, propitiating him by every pious act.

मा त्वा सोमस्य गल्दया सदा याचन्नहं गिरा । भूर्णिं मृगं न सवनेषु चुक्रुधं क ईशानं न याचिषत् ॥

mā tvā somasya galdayā sadā yācannahaṃ girā | bhūrṇiṃ mṛgaṃ na savaneṣu cukrudhaṃ ka īśānaṃ na yāciṣat ||

May I never, when importuning you in sacrifices with the effusion of the Soma and with praise, exciteyou like a ferocious lion to wrath; who (is there in the world) that does not solicit his lorḍ

मदेनेषितं मदमुग्रमुग्रेण शवसा । विश्वेषां तरुतारं मदच्युतं मदे हि ष्मा ददाति नः ॥

madeneṣitaṃ madamugramugreṇa śavasā | viśveṣāṃ tarutāraṃ madacyutaṃ made hi ṣmā dadāti naḥ ||

(May Indra drink) with invogorated strength, the strong exhilarating (Soma) offered with animating(laudation); for in his delight he gives us (a son) the overcomer of all (foes), the humbler of their pride.

शेवारे वार्या पुरु देवो मर्ताय दाशुषे । स सुन्वते च स्तुवते च रासते विश्वगूर्तो अरिष्टुतः ॥

śevāre vāryā puru devo martāya dāśuṣe | sa sunvate ca stuvate ca rāsate viśvagūrto ariṣṭutaḥ ||

The divine (Indra), the accomplisher of all aims, the glorified by his foes, gives vast treasures to themortal who presents offerings at the sacrifice, to him who pours out the libation, who hymns his praise.

एन्द्र याहि मत्स्व चित्रेण देव राधसा । सरो न प्रास्युदरं सपीतिभिरा सोमेभिरुरु स्फिरम् ॥

endra yāhi matsva citreṇa deva rādhasā | saro na prāsyudaraṃ sapītibhirā somebhiruru sphiram ||

Come here, Indra, be exhilarated by the wonderful (libatory) affluence and with your fellow-troopers (theMaruts) fill with the Soma your vast belly, capacious as a lake,

आ त्वा सहस्रमा शतं युक्ता रथे हिरण्यये । ब्रह्मयुजो हरय इन्द्र केशिनो वहन्तु सोमपीतये ॥

ā tvā sahasramā śataṃ yuktā rathe hiraṇyaye | brahmayujo haraya indra keśino vahantu somapītaye ||

May your thousand, your hundred steeds, Indra yoke to your golden chariot, harnessed by prayer, withflowing manes, bring you to drink the Soma.

आ त्वा रथे हिरण्यये हरी मयूरशेप्या । शितिपृष्ठा वहतां मध्वो अन्धसो विवक्षणस्य पीतये ॥

ā tvā rathe hiraṇyaye harī mayūraśepyā | śitipṛṣṭhā vahatāṃ madhvo andhaso vivakṣaṇasya pītaye ||

May your two peacock-tailed, white-backed horses, yoked to your golden chariot, bring you to drink ofthe sweet praiseworthy libation.

पिबा त्वस्य गिर्वणः सुतस्य पूर्वपा इव । परिष्कृतस्य रसिन इयमासुतिश्चारुर्मदाय पत्यते ॥

pibā tvasya girvaṇaḥ sutasya pūrvapā iva | pariṣkṛtasya rasina iyamāsutiścārurmadāya patyate ||

Drink you, who are worthy to be glorified, of this consecrated and juicy libation, like the first drinker(vāyu); this excellent effusion issues for your exhilaration.

य एको अस्ति दंसना महाँ उग्रो अभि व्रतैः । गमत्स शिप्री न स योषदा गमद्धवं न परि वर्जति ॥

ya eko asti daṃsanā mahā~ ugro abhi vrataiḥ | gamatsa śiprī na sa yoṣadā gamaddhavaṃ na pari varjati ||

May he who alone overcomes (enemies) through (the power of) religious observances, who by piousacts is rendered mighty and fierce, who is handsome- chinned, approach; may he never be remote; may he cometo our invocation; may he never abandon us.

त्वं पुरं चरिष्ण्वं वधैः शुष्णस्य सं पिणक् । त्वं भा अनु चरो अध द्विता यदिन्द्र हव्यो भुवः ॥

tvaṃ puraṃ cariṣṇvaṃ vadhaiḥ śuṣṇasya saṃ piṇak | tvaṃ bhā anu caro adha dvitā yadindra havyo bhuvaḥ ||

You have broken to pieces the moveable city of Śuṣṇa with your weapons; you who are light havefollowed him; wherefore, Indra, you are in two ways to be worshipped.

मम त्वा सूर उदिते मम मध्यंदिने दिवः । मम प्रपित्वे अपिशर्वरे वसवा स्तोमासो अवृत्सत ॥

mama tvā sūra udite mama madhyaṃdine divaḥ | mama prapitve apiśarvare vasavā stomāso avṛtsata ||

May my prayers when the sun has risen, those also at noon, those also when evening arrives, bringyou back, giver of riches (to my sacrifice).

स्तुहि स्तुहीदेते घा ते मंहिष्ठासो मघोनाम् । निन्दिताश्वः प्रपथी परमज्या मघस्य मेध्यातिथे ॥

stuhi stuhīdete ghā te maṃhiṣṭhāso maghonām | ninditāśvaḥ prapathī paramajyā maghasya medhyātithe ||

Praise (me), praise (me), Medhyātithi, for among the wealthy we are the most liberal donors of wealthto you; (praise me as one) who outstrips a horse in speed, follows the right path, and bears the best arms.

आ यदश्वान्वनन्वतः श्रद्धयाहं रथे रुहम् । उत वामस्य वसुनश्चिकेतति यो अस्ति याद्वः पशुः ॥

ā yadaśvānvananvataḥ śraddhayāhaṃ rathe ruham | uta vāmasya vasunaściketati yo asti yādvaḥ paśuḥ ||

When with faith I harness the docile horses in the car, (praise me), for the descendant of Yādu,possessed of cattle, know how to distribute desirable riches.

य ऋज्रा मह्यं मामहे सह त्वचा हिरण्यया । एष विश्वान्यभ्यस्तु सौभगासङ्गस्य स्वनद्रथः ॥

ya ṛjrā mahyaṃ māmahe saha tvacā hiraṇyayā | eṣa viśvānyabhyastu saubhagāsaṅgasya svanadrathaḥ ||

(Praise me, saying), "He who has presented riches to me with a golden purse; may this rattling chariotof Asaṅga carry off all the treasures (of my enemy)".

अध प्लायोगिरति दासदन्यानासङ्गो अग्ने दशभिः सहस्रैः । अधोक्षणो दश मह्यं रुशन्तो नऴा इव सरसो निरतिष्ठन् ॥

adha plāyogirati dāsadanyānāsaṅgo agne daśabhiḥ sahasraiḥ | adhokṣaṇo daśa mahyaṃ ruśanto naḻā iva saraso niratiṣṭhan ||

(So praise me, saying), "Asaṅga, the son of plural _yoga, has given more than others, Agni, by tens ofthousands; ten times the (number of) vigorous and brilliant oxen (given by him) to me, issue forth like the reeds ofa lake.

अन्वस्य स्थूरं ददृशे पुरस्तादनस्थ ऊरुरवरम्बमाणः । शश्वती नार्यभिचक्ष्याह सुभद्रमर्य भोजनं बिभर्षि ॥

anvasya sthūraṃ dadṛśe purastādanastha ūruravarambamāṇaḥ | śaśvatī nāryabhicakṣyāha subhadramarya bhojanaṃ bibharṣi ||

Śaśvatī, perceiving that the sings of manhood were restored, exclaims, "Joy, husband, you arecapable of enjoyment".
