[rv-7-33] • 14 श्लोकाः

श्वित्यञ्चो मा दक्षिणतस्कपर्दा धियंजिन्वासो अभि हि प्रमन्दुः । उत्तिष्ठन्वोचे परि बर्हिषो नॄन्न मे दूरादवितवे वसिष्ठाः ॥

śvityañco mā dakṣiṇataskapardā dhiyaṃjinvāso abhi hi pramanduḥ | uttiṣṭhanvoce pari barhiṣo nṝnna me dūrādavitave vasiṣṭhāḥ ||

The white-complexioned accomplishers of holy ceremonies, wearing the lock of hair on the right side,have afforded me delight, when, rising up I call the leaders (of rites) to the sacred grass; the Vasiṣṭhas, (mysons) should never be far from me.

दूरादिन्द्रमनयन्ना सुतेन तिरो वैशन्तमति पान्तमुग्रम् । पाशद्युम्नस्य वायतस्य सोमात्सुतादिन्द्रोऽवृणीता वसिष्ठान् ॥

dūrādindramanayannā sutena tiro vaiśantamati pāntamugram | pāśadyumnasya vāyatasya somātsutādindro'vṛṇītā vasiṣṭhān ||

Disgracing (Pāśadyumna), they brought from afar the fierce Indra, when drinking the ladle of Soma athis sacrifice, to (receive) the libation (of Sudāsa); Indra hastened from the effused Soma of Pāśadumna, theson of Vāyata, to the Vasiṣṭhas.

एवेन्नु कं सिन्धुमेभिस्ततारेवेन्नु कं भेदमेभिर्जघान । एवेन्नु कं दाशराज्ञे सुदासं प्रावदिन्द्रो ब्रह्मणा वो वसिष्ठाः ॥

evennu kaṃ sindhumebhistatārevennu kaṃ bhedamebhirjaghāna | evennu kaṃ dāśarājñe sudāsaṃ prāvadindro brahmaṇā vo vasiṣṭhāḥ ||

In the same manner was he, (Sudāsa) enabled by them easily to cross the Sindhu river; in the samemanner, through them he easily slew his foe; so in like manner, Vasiṣṭhas, through your prayers, did Indradefend Sudāsa in the war with the ten kings.

जुष्टी नरो ब्रह्मणा वः पितॄणामक्षमव्ययं न किला रिषाथ । यच्छक्वरीषु बृहता रवेणेन्द्रे शुष्ममदधाता वसिष्ठाः ॥

juṣṭī naro brahmaṇā vaḥ pitṝṇāmakṣamavyayaṃ na kilā riṣātha | yacchakvarīṣu bṛhatā raveṇendre śuṣmamadadhātā vasiṣṭhāḥ ||

By your prayers, leaders (of rites), is effected the gratificcation of your progenitors; I have set in motionthe axle (of the chariot); be no you intert, for by your sacred metres, Vasiṣṭhas, (chanted) with a loud voice, yousustain vigour in Inda.

उद्द्यामिवेत्तृष्णजो नाथितासोऽदीधयुर्दाशराज्ञे वृतासः । वसिष्ठस्य स्तुवत इन्द्रो अश्रोदुरुं तृत्सुभ्यो अकृणोदु लोकम् ॥

uddyāmivettṛṣṇajo nāthitāso'dīdhayurdāśarājñe vṛtāsaḥ | vasiṣṭhasya stuvata indro aśroduruṃ tṛtsubhyo akṛṇodu lokam ||

Suffering from thirst, soliciting (rain), supported (by the Tṛtsus) in the war with the ten rājās, (theVasiṣṭhas) made Indra radiant as the sun; Indra heard (the praises) of Vasiṣṭha glorifying him, and bestowed aspacious region on the Tṛtsus.

दण्डा इवेद्गोअजनास आसन्परिच्छिन्ना भरता अर्भकासः । अभवच्च पुरएता वसिष्ठ आदित्तृत्सूनां विशो अप्रथन्त ॥

daṇḍā ivedgoajanāsa āsanparicchinnā bharatā arbhakāsaḥ | abhavacca puraetā vasiṣṭha ādittṛtsūnāṃ viśo aprathanta ||

The Bharatas, inferior (to their foes), were shorn (of their possessions), like he staves for driving cattle,(stripped of their leaves and branches); but Vasiṣṭha became their family priest, and the people of the Tṛtsusprospered.

त्रयः कृण्वन्ति भुवनेषु रेतस्तिस्रः प्रजा आर्या ज्योतिरग्राः । त्रयो घर्मास उषसं सचन्ते सर्वाँ इत्ताँ अनु विदुर्वसिष्ठाः ॥

trayaḥ kṛṇvanti bhuvaneṣu retastisraḥ prajā āryā jyotiragrāḥ | trayo gharmāsa uṣasaṃ sacante sarvā~ ittā~ anu vidurvasiṣṭhāḥ ||

Three shed moisture upon the regions, three are their glorious progeny, of which the chief is night;three communicators of warmth accompany the dawn; verily the Vasiṣṭhas understand all these.

सूर्यस्येव वक्षथो ज्योतिरेषां समुद्रस्येव महिमा गभीरः । वातस्येव प्रजवो नान्येन स्तोमो वसिष्ठा अन्वेतवे वः ॥

sūryasyeva vakṣatho jyotireṣāṃ samudrasyeva mahimā gabhīraḥ | vātasyeva prajavo nānyena stomo vasiṣṭhā anvetave vaḥ ||

The glory of these Vasi.ṣṭhas is like the splendour of the sun; their greatness as profound as (thedepth of) the ocean; your praise, Vasiṣṭhas, has the velocity of the wind; by no other can it be surpassed.

त इन्निण्यं हृदयस्य प्रकेतैः सहस्रवल्शमभि सं चरन्ति । यमेन ततं परिधिं वयन्तोऽप्सरस उप सेदुर्वसिष्ठाः ॥

ta inniṇyaṃ hṛdayasya praketaiḥ sahasravalśamabhi saṃ caranti | yamena tataṃ paridhiṃ vayanto'psarasa upa sedurvasiṣṭhāḥ ||

By the wisdom seated in the heart the Vasiṣṭhas traverse the hidden thousand branched world, andthe Apsarasas sit down wearing the vesture spread out by Yama.

विद्युतो ज्योतिः परि संजिहानं मित्रावरुणा यदपश्यतां त्वा । तत्ते जन्मोतैकं वसिष्ठागस्त्यो यत्त्वा विश आजभार ॥

vidyuto jyotiḥ pari saṃjihānaṃ mitrāvaruṇā yadapaśyatāṃ tvā | tatte janmotaikaṃ vasiṣṭhāgastyo yattvā viśa ājabhāra ||

When Mitra and Varuṇa beheld you, Vasiṣṭha, quitting the lustre of the lightning (for a different form),then one of your births (took plural ce), inasmuch as Agastya bore you from your (former) abode.

उतासि मैत्रावरुणो वसिष्ठोर्वश्या ब्रह्मन्मनसोऽधि जातः । द्रप्सं स्कन्नं ब्रह्मणा दैव्येन विश्वे देवाः पुष्करे त्वाददन्त ॥

utāsi maitrāvaruṇo vasiṣṭhorvaśyā brahmanmanaso'dhi jātaḥ | drapsaṃ skannaṃ brahmaṇā daivyena viśve devāḥ puṣkare tvādadanta ||

Verily, Vasiṣṭha you are the son of Mitra and Varuṇa, born, Brahmā, of the will of Urvaśī, after theseminal effusion; all the gods have sustained you, (endowed) with celestial and Vedic vigour in the lake.

स प्रकेत उभयस्य प्रविद्वान्त्सहस्रदान उत वा सदानः । यमेन ततं परिधिं वयिष्यन्नप्सरसः परि जज्ञे वसिष्ठः ॥

sa praketa ubhayasya pravidvāntsahasradāna uta vā sadānaḥ | yamena tataṃ paridhiṃ vayiṣyannapsarasaḥ pari jajñe vasiṣṭhaḥ ||

He, the sage, cognizant of both worlds, was the donor of thousands; he was verily donation; wearingthe vesture spread spread by Yama, Vasiṣṭha was born of the Apsaras.

सत्रे ह जाताविषिता नमोभिः कुम्भे रेतः सिषिचतुः समानम् । ततो ह मान उदियाय मध्यात्ततो जातमृषिमाहुर्वसिष्ठम् ॥

satre ha jātāviṣitā namobhiḥ kumbhe retaḥ siṣicatuḥ samānam | tato ha māna udiyāya madhyāttato jātamṛṣimāhurvasiṣṭham ||

Consecrated for the sacrifice, propitiated by praises, they, Mitra and Varuṇa, poured a commoneffusion into the water-jar, from the midst of which Māna arose, and from which also, they say, Vasiṣṭha wasborn.

उक्थभृतं सामभृतं बिभर्ति ग्रावाणं बिभ्रत्प्र वदात्यग्रे । उपैनमाध्वं सुमनस्यमाना आ वो गच्छाति प्रतृदो वसिष्ठः ॥

ukthabhṛtaṃ sāmabhṛtaṃ bibharti grāvāṇaṃ bibhratpra vadātyagre | upainamādhvaṃ sumanasyamānā ā vo gacchāti pratṛdo vasiṣṭhaḥ ||

Pratṛts, Agastya comes to you; welcome him with devoted minds, and he in the foremost station directsthe reciter of the prayer, the chanter of the hymn, the grinder of the stone, and repeats (what is to be repeated).
