[rv-7-18] • 25 श्लोकाः

त्वे ह यत्पितरश्चिन्न इन्द्र विश्वा वामा जरितारो असन्वन् । त्वे गावः सुदुघास्त्वे ह्यश्वास्त्वं वसु देवयते वनिष्ठः ॥

tve ha yatpitaraścinna indra viśvā vāmā jaritāro asanvan | tve gāvaḥ sudughāstve hyaśvāstvaṃ vasu devayate vaniṣṭhaḥ ||

Our forefathers, Indra, glorifying you, have obtained all desirable (riches); in your gift are cows easy tobe milked, and horses, and you are the liberal donor of wealth to the devout.

राजेव हि जनिभिः क्षेष्येवाव द्युभिरभि विदुष्कविः सन् । पिशा गिरो मघवन्गोभिरश्वैस्त्वायतः शिशीहि राये अस्मान् ॥

rājeva hi janibhiḥ kṣeṣyevāva dyubhirabhi viduṣkaviḥ san | piśā giro maghavangobhiraśvaistvāyataḥ śiśīhi rāye asmān ||

You dwell with your glories like a rājā with his wives; Maghavan, who are wise and experienced,(reward our) praises with the precious metals, with cows, with horses; conduct us who are dependent on yourriches.

इमा उ त्वा पस्पृधानासो अत्र मन्द्रा गिरो देवयन्तीरुप स्थुः । अर्वाची ते पथ्या राय एतु स्याम ते सुमताविन्द्र शर्मन् ॥

imā u tvā paspṛdhānāso atra mandrā giro devayantīrupa sthuḥ | arvācī te pathyā rāya etu syāma te sumatāvindra śarman ||

These gratifying and pious hymns, emulous (in earnestness), are addressed on this occasion to you,may the path of your riches lead downwards; may we, Indra, (diligent) in your praise, enjoy felicity.

धेनुं न त्वा सूयवसे दुदुक्षन्नुप ब्रह्माणि ससृजे वसिष्ठः । त्वामिन्मे गोपतिं विश्व आहा न इन्द्रः सुमतिं गन्त्वच्छ ॥

dhenuṃ na tvā sūyavase dudukṣannupa brahmāṇi sasṛje vasiṣṭhaḥ | tvāminme gopatiṃ viśva āhā na indraḥ sumatiṃ gantvaccha ||

Desirous of milking you like a milch cow at pasture, Vasiṣṭha has let loose his prayers to you; everyone of my people proclaims you the lord of cattle; may Indra be present at our praises.

अर्णांसि चित्पप्रथाना सुदास इन्द्रो गाधान्यकृणोत्सुपारा । शर्धन्तं शिम्युमुचथस्य नव्यः शापं सिन्धूनामकृणोदशस्तीः ॥

arṇāṃsi citpaprathānā sudāsa indro gādhānyakṛṇotsupārā | śardhantaṃ śimyumucathasya navyaḥ śāpaṃ sindhūnāmakṛṇodaśastīḥ ||

The adorable Indra made the well-known deep waters (of the Paruṣṇi) fordable for Sudāsa, andconverted the vehement awakening imprecation of the sacrificer into the calumnation of the rivers.

पुरोऴा इत्तुर्वशो यक्षुरासीद्राये मत्स्यासो निशिता अपीव । श्रुष्टिं चक्रुर्भृगवो द्रुह्यवश्च सखा सखायमतरद्विषूचोः ॥

puroḻā itturvaśo yakṣurāsīdrāye matsyāso niśitā apīva | śruṣṭiṃ cakrurbhṛgavo druhyavaśca sakhā sakhāyamataradviṣūcoḥ ||

Turvaśa, who was presiding (at solemn rites), diligent in sacrifice, (went to Sudāsa) for wealth; but likefishes restricted (to the element of water), the Bhrigus and Druhyus quickly assailed them; of these twoeverywhere going the friend (of Sudāsa, Indra) rescued his friend.

आ पक्थासो भलानसो भनन्तालिनासो विषाणिनः शिवासः । आ योऽनयत्सधमा आर्यस्य गव्या तृत्सुभ्यो अजगन्युधा नॄन् ॥

ā pakthāso bhalānaso bhanantālināso viṣāṇinaḥ śivāsaḥ | ā yo'nayatsadhamā āryasya gavyā tṛtsubhyo ajaganyudhā nṝn ||

Those who dress the oblation, those who pronounce auspicious words, those who abstain frompenance, those who bear horns (in their hands), those who bestow happiness (on the world by sacrifice), glorifythat Indra, who recovered the cattle of the Arya from the plural nderers, who slew the enemies in battle.

दुराध्यो अदितिं स्रेवयन्तोऽचेतसो वि जगृभ्रे परुष्णीम् । मह्नाविव्यक्पृथिवीं पत्यमानः पशुष्कविरशयच्चायमानः ॥

durādhyo aditiṃ srevayanto'cetaso vi jagṛbhre paruṣṇīm | mahnāvivyakpṛthivīṃ patyamānaḥ paśuṣkaviraśayaccāyamānaḥ ||

The evil-disposed and stupid (enemies of Sudāsa), crossing the humble Paruṣṇi river, have brokendown its banks; but he by his greatness pervades the earth, and Kavi, the son of Cāyamana, like a fallingvictim, sleeps (in death).

ईयुरर्थं न न्यर्थं परुष्णीमाशुश्चनेदभिपित्वं जगाम । सुदास इन्द्रः सुतुकाँ अमित्रानरन्धयन्मानुषे वध्रिवाचः ॥

īyurarthaṃ na nyarthaṃ paruṣṇīmāśuścanedabhipitvaṃ jagāma | sudāsa indraḥ sutukā~ amitrānarandhayanmānuṣe vadhrivācaḥ ||

The waters followed their regular course to the Paruṣṇi, nor (wandered) beyond it; the quick courser(of the king) came to the accessible plural ces, and Indra made the idly-talking enemies, with their numerousprogeny, subject among men (to Sudāsa).

ईयुर्गावो न यवसादगोपा यथाकृतमभि मित्रं चितासः । पृश्निगावः पृश्निनिप्रेषितासः श्रुष्टिं चक्रुर्नियुतो रन्तयश्च ॥

īyurgāvo na yavasādagopā yathākṛtamabhi mitraṃ citāsaḥ | pṛśnigāvaḥ pṛśninipreṣitāsaḥ śruṣṭiṃ cakrurniyuto rantayaśca ||

They who ride on particoloured cattle, (the Maruts), despatched by Pṛṣṇi and recalling theengagement made by them with their friend (Indra), came like cattle from the pasturage, when left without aherdsman; the exulting Niyut steeds brought them quickly (against the foe).

एकं च यो विंशतिं च श्रवस्या वैकर्णयोर्जनान्राजा न्यस्तः । दस्मो न सद्मन्नि शिशाति बर्हिः शूरः सर्गमकृणोदिन्द्र एषाम् ॥

ekaṃ ca yo viṃśatiṃ ca śravasyā vaikarṇayorjanānrājā nyastaḥ | dasmo na sadmanni śiśāti barhiḥ śūraḥ sargamakṛṇodindra eṣām ||

The hero Indra created the Maruts (for the assistance of the rājā), who, ambitious of fame, slewone-and-twenty of the men on the two banks (of the Paruṣṇi), as a well-looking priest lops the sacred grass inthe chamber of sacrifice.

अध श्रुतं कवषं वृद्धमप्स्वनु द्रुह्युं नि वृणग्वज्रबाहुः । वृणाना अत्र सख्याय सख्यं त्वायन्तो ये अमदन्ननु त्वा ॥

adha śrutaṃ kavaṣaṃ vṛddhamapsvanu druhyuṃ ni vṛṇagvajrabāhuḥ | vṛṇānā atra sakhyāya sakhyaṃ tvāyanto ye amadannanu tvā ||

You, the bearer of the thunderbolt, did drown Śruta, Kavaṣa, Vṛddha and afterwards Druhyu, in thewaters; for they, Indra, who are devoted to you, and glorify you, preferring your friendship, enjoy it.

वि सद्यो विश्वा दृंहितान्येषामिन्द्रः पुरः सहसा सप्त दर्दः । व्यानवस्य तृत्सवे गयं भाग्जेष्म पूरुं विदथे मृध्रवाचम् ॥

vi sadyo viśvā dṛṃhitānyeṣāmindraḥ puraḥ sahasā sapta dardaḥ | vyānavasya tṛtsave gayaṃ bhāgjeṣma pūruṃ vidathe mṛdhravācam ||

Indra, in his might, quickly demolished all their strongholds, and their seven (kinds of) cities; he hasgiven the dwelling of the son of Anu to Tṛtsu; may we, (by propitiating Indra), conquer in battle the ill-speakingman.

नि गव्यवोऽनवो द्रुह्यवश्च षष्टिः शता सुषुपुः षट् सहस्रा । षष्टिर्वीरासो अधि षड्दुवोयु विश्वेदिन्द्रस्य वीर्या कृतानि ॥

ni gavyavo'navo druhyavaśca ṣaṣṭiḥ śatā suṣupuḥ ṣaṭ sahasrā | ṣaṣṭirvīrāso adhi ṣaḍduvoyu viśvedindrasya vīryā kṛtāni ||

The warriors of the Anus and Druhyus, intending (to carry off the) cattle, (hostile) to the pious(Sudāsa) perished to the number of sixty-six thousand six hundred and sixty; such are all the glorious acts ofIndra.

इन्द्रेणैते तृत्सवो वेविषाणा आपो न सृष्टा अधवन्त नीचीः । दुर्मित्रासः प्रकलविन्मिमाना जहुर्विश्वानि भोजना सुदासे ॥

indreṇaite tṛtsavo veviṣāṇā āpo na sṛṣṭā adhavanta nīcīḥ | durmitrāsaḥ prakalavinmimānā jahurviśvāni bhojanā sudāse ||

These hostile, Tṛtsus, ignorantly contending with Indra, fled routed as rapidly as rivers on a downwardcourse, and being discomfited, abandoned all their possessions to Sudāsa.

अर्धं वीरस्य शृतपामनिन्द्रं परा शर्धन्तं नुनुदे अभि क्षाम् । इन्द्रो मन्युं मन्युम्यो मिमाय भेजे पथो वर्तनिं पत्यमानः ॥

ardhaṃ vīrasya śṛtapāmanindraṃ parā śardhantaṃ nunude abhi kṣām | indro manyuṃ manyumyo mimāya bheje patho vartaniṃ patyamānaḥ ||

Indra has scattered over the earth the hostile rival of the hero (Sudāsa), the senior of Indra, theappropriator of the oblation; Indra has baffled the wrath of the wratfhful enemy, and the (foe) advancing on theway (against Sudāsa) has taken the path of flight.

आध्रेण चित्तद्वेकं चकार सिंह्यं चित्पेत्वेना जघान । अव स्रक्तीर्वेश्यावृश्चदिन्द्रः प्रायच्छद्विश्वा भोजना सुदासे ॥

ādhreṇa cittadvekaṃ cakāra siṃhyaṃ citpetvenā jaghāna | ava sraktīrveśyāvṛścadindraḥ prāyacchadviśvā bhojanā sudāse ||

Indra, has effected a valuable (donation) by a pauper; he has slain an old lion by a goat; he has cut theangles of the sacrificial post with a needle; he has given all the spoils (of the enemy) to Sudāsa.

शश्वन्तो हि शत्रवो रारधुष्टे भेदस्य चिच्छर्धतो विन्द रन्धिम् । मर्ताँ एनः स्तुवतो यः कृणोति तिग्मं तस्मिन्नि जहि वज्रमिन्द्र ॥

śaśvanto hi śatravo rāradhuṣṭe bhedasya cicchardhato vinda randhim | martā~ enaḥ stuvato yaḥ kṛṇoti tigmaṃ tasminni jahi vajramindra ||

Your numerous enemies, Indra, have been reduced to subjection, effect at some time or other thesubjugation of the turbulent Bheda, who holds men praising you as guilty of wickedness; hurl, Indra, your sharpthuderbolt against him.

आवदिन्द्रं यमुना तृत्सवश्च प्रात्र भेदं सर्वताता मुषायत् । अजासश्च शिग्रवो यक्षवश्च बलिं शीर्षाणि जभ्रुरश्व्यानि ॥

āvadindraṃ yamunā tṛtsavaśca prātra bhedaṃ sarvatātā muṣāyat | ajāsaśca śigravo yakṣavaśca baliṃ śīrṣāṇi jabhruraśvyāni ||

The dwellers on the Yamuna and the Tṛtsus glorified Indra when he killed Bheda in battle; the Ajas, theŚigrus, the Yakṣas, offered him as a sacrifice the heads of the horses (killed in the combat).

न त इन्द्र सुमतयो न रायः संचक्षे पूर्वा उषसो न नूत्नाः । देवकं चिन्मान्यमानं जघन्थाव त्मना बृहतः शम्बरं भेत् ॥

na ta indra sumatayo na rāyaḥ saṃcakṣe pūrvā uṣaso na nūtnāḥ | devakaṃ cinmānyamānaṃ jaghanthāva tmanā bṛhataḥ śambaraṃ bhet ||

Your favours, Indra, and your bounties, whether old or new, cannot be counted like the (recurring)dawn; you have slain Devaka, the son of Mānyamāna, and of thine own will, has cast down Śambara from thevast (mountain).

प्र ये गृहादममदुस्त्वाया पराशरः शतयातुर्वसिष्ठः । न ते भोजस्य सख्यं मृषन्ताधा सूरिभ्यः सुदिना व्युच्छान् ॥

pra ye gṛhādamamadustvāyā parāśaraḥ śatayāturvasiṣṭhaḥ | na te bhojasya sakhyaṃ mṛṣantādhā sūribhyaḥ sudinā vyucchān ||

Parāśara, the destroyer of hundreds (of rākṣasas), and Vasiṣṭha they who, devoted to you, haveglorified you in every dwelling, neglect not the friendship of you (their) benefactor; therefore prosperous daysdawn upon the pious.

द्वे नप्तुर्देववतः शते गोर्द्वा रथा वधूमन्ता सुदासः । अर्हन्नग्ने पैजवनस्य दानं होतेव सद्म पर्येमि रेभन् ॥

dve napturdevavataḥ śate gordvā rathā vadhūmantā sudāsaḥ | arhannagne paijavanasya dānaṃ hoteva sadma paryemi rebhan ||

Praising the liberality of Sudāsa, the grandson of Devavat, the son of Paijavana, the donor of twohundred cows, and of two chariots with two wives, I, worthy (of the gift), circumambulate you, Agni, like theministrant priest in the chamber (of sacrifice).

चत्वारो मा पैजवनस्य दानाः स्मद्दिष्टयः कृशनिनो निरेके । ऋज्रासो मा पृथिविष्ठाः सुदासस्तोकं तोकाय श्रवसे वहन्ति ॥

catvāro mā paijavanasya dānāḥ smaddiṣṭayaḥ kṛśanino nireke | ṛjrāso mā pṛthiviṣṭhāḥ sudāsastokaṃ tokāya śravase vahanti ||

Four (horses), having golden trappings, going steadily on a difficult road, celebrated on the earth, theexcellent and acceptable gifts (made) to me by Sudāsa, the son of Paijavana, bear me as a son (to obtain) foodand progeny.

यस्य श्रवो रोदसी अन्तरुर्वी शीर्ष्णेशीर्ष्णे विबभाजा विभक्ता । सप्तेदिन्द्रं न स्रवतो गृणन्ति नि युध्यामधिमशिशादभीके ॥

yasya śravo rodasī antarurvī śīrṣṇeśīrṣṇe vibabhājā vibhaktā | saptedindraṃ na sravato gṛṇanti ni yudhyāmadhimaśiśādabhīke ||

The seven worlds praise (Sudāsa) as if he were Indra; him whose fame (spreads) through thespacious heaven and earth; who, munificent, has distributed (wealth) on every eminent person n, and (for him) theflowing (rivers) have destroyed Yudhyamadhi in war.

इमं नरो मरुतः सश्चतानु दिवोदासं न पितरं सुदासः । अविष्टना पैजवनस्य केतं दूणाशं क्षत्रमजरं दुवोयु ॥

imaṃ naro marutaḥ saścatānu divodāsaṃ na pitaraṃ sudāsaḥ | aviṣṭanā paijavanasya ketaṃ dūṇāśaṃ kṣatramajaraṃ duvoyu ||

Maruts, leaders (of rites), attend upon this (prince) as you did upon Divodāsa, the father of Sudāsa;favour the prayers of the devout son of Pijavana, and may his strength be unimpaired, undecaying].
