[rv-9-96] • 24 श्लोकाः

प्र सेनानीः शूरो अग्रे रथानां गव्यन्नेति हर्षते अस्य सेना । भद्रान्कृण्वन्निन्द्रहवान्त्सखिभ्य आ सोमो वस्त्रा रभसानि दत्ते ॥

pra senānīḥ śūro agre rathānāṃ gavyanneti harṣate asya senā | bhadrānkṛṇvannindrahavāntsakhibhya ā somo vastrā rabhasāni datte ||

The leader of the host, a hero, advances in front of the chariots intent on seizing the cattle (of the enemy); his army exults; making their oblations to Indra prosperous for the friendly (worshippers), Soma assumes the hastily made robes (of curds and milk).

समस्य हरिं हरयो मृजन्त्यश्वहयैरनिशितं नमोभिः । आ तिष्ठति रथमिन्द्रस्य सखा विद्वाँ एना सुमतिं यात्यच्छ ॥

samasya hariṃ harayo mṛjantyaśvahayairaniśitaṃ namobhiḥ | ā tiṣṭhati rathamindrasya sakhā vidvā~ enā sumatiṃ yātyaccha ||

The priests express his green-tinted (juice); he mounts the chariot unyoked by the horse-driving salutations; the wise Soma the friend of Indra goes to meet the worshipper.

स नो देव देवताते पवस्व महे सोम प्सरस इन्द्रपानः । कृण्वन्नपो वर्षयन्द्यामुतेमामुरोरा नो वरिवस्या पुनानः ॥

sa no deva devatāte pavasva mahe soma psarasa indrapānaḥ | kṛṇvannapo varṣayandyāmutemāmurorā no varivasyā punānaḥ ||

Divine Soma, who are the beverage of Indra, flow at our sacrifice for (his) abundant food; sending water, causing rain to fall upon heaven and upon this earth, (come) from the wide (firmament, and) being purified bestow upon us wealth.

अजीतयेऽहतये पवस्व स्वस्तये सर्वतातये बृहते । तदुशन्ति विश्व इमे सखायस्तदहं वश्मि पवमान सोम ॥

ajītaye'hataye pavasva svastaye sarvatātaye bṛhate | taduśanti viśva ime sakhāyastadahaṃ vaśmi pavamāna soma ||

Flow for our immunity from defeat and slaughter, flow for our welfare, for the great sacrifice for all the gods; all these my friends desire this; this I desire, O Soma Pavamāna.

सोमः पवते जनिता मतीनां जनिता दिवो जनिता पृथिव्याः । जनिताग्नेर्जनिता सूर्यस्य जनितेन्द्रस्य जनितोत विष्णोः ॥

somaḥ pavate janitā matīnāṃ janitā divo janitā pṛthivyāḥ | janitāgnerjanitā sūryasya janitendrasya janitota viṣṇoḥ ||

The Soma flows, the genitive rator of praises, the genitive rator of heaven, the genitive rator of the earth, the genitive rator of Agni, the genitive rator of the sun, the genitive rator of Indra, and the genitive rator of Viṣṇu.

ब्रह्मा देवानां पदवीः कवीनामृषिर्विप्राणां महिषो मृगाणाम् । श्येनो गृध्राणां स्वधितिर्वनानां सोमः पवित्रमत्येति रेभन् ॥

brahmā devānāṃ padavīḥ kavīnāmṛṣirviprāṇāṃ mahiṣo mṛgāṇām | śyeno gṛdhrāṇāṃ svadhitirvanānāṃ somaḥ pavitramatyeti rebhan ||

The Brahmā of the gods, the guide of the sages, the ṛṣi of the pious, the buffalo of wild animals, the falcon of the vultures, the hatchet of deadly weapons, the Soma passes through the filter with a roar.

प्रावीविपद्वाच ऊर्मिं न सिन्धुर्गिरः सोमः पवमानो मनीषाः । अन्तः पश्यन्वृजनेमावराण्या तिष्ठति वृषभो गोषु जानन् ॥

prāvīvipadvāca ūrmiṃ na sindhurgiraḥ somaḥ pavamāno manīṣāḥ | antaḥ paśyanvṛjanemāvarāṇyā tiṣṭhati vṛṣabho goṣu jānan ||

The purified Soma excites gratifying praises as a river (excites) the wave of sound; the showerer (of benefits) beholding the hidden (treasure) presides over these irresistible powers, knowing about the cattle.

स मत्सरः पृत्सु वन्वन्नवातः सहस्ररेता अभि वाजमर्ष । इन्द्रायेन्दो पवमानो मनीष्यंशोरूर्मिमीरय गा इषण्यन् ॥

sa matsaraḥ pṛtsu vanvannavātaḥ sahasraretā abhi vājamarṣa | indrāyendo pavamāno manīṣyaṃśorūrmimīraya gā iṣaṇyan ||

(Soma) who are the exhilarator, harming (the foe) in battles, (yourself) unharmed, who have a thousand streams, rush against the strength (of the enemy), Indu, who are being purified, the sage, uttering cries, urge on for Indra the wave of juice.

परि प्रियः कलशे देववात इन्द्राय सोमो रण्यो मदाय । सहस्रधारः शतवाज इन्दुर्वाजी न सप्तिः समना जिगाति ॥

pari priyaḥ kalaśe devavāta indrāya somo raṇyo madāya | sahasradhāraḥ śatavāja indurvājī na saptiḥ samanā jigāti ||

The plural asing delightful Soma approached by gods (proceeds) to the pitcher to exhilarate Indra; Indu the thousand-streamed and vigorous proceeds like a strong horse to battle.

स पूर्व्यो वसुविज्जायमानो मृजानो अप्सु दुदुहानो अद्रौ । अभिशस्तिपा भुवनस्य राजा विदद्गातुं ब्रह्मणे पूयमानः ॥

sa pūrvyo vasuvijjāyamāno mṛjāno apsu duduhāno adrau | abhiśastipā bhuvanasya rājā vidadgātuṃ brahmaṇe pūyamānaḥ ||

The ancient (Soma) the finder of treasure as soon as genitive rated, cleansed in the waters milked on the stone, the defender against enemies, the sovereign of the world, purified for the sacrifice, shows (the worshipper) the right way.

त्वया हि नः पितरः सोम पूर्वे कर्माणि चक्रुः पवमान धीराः । वन्वन्नवातः परिधीँरपोर्णु वीरेभिरश्वैर्मघवा भवा नः ॥

tvayā hi naḥ pitaraḥ soma pūrve karmāṇi cakruḥ pavamāna dhīrāḥ | vanvannavātaḥ paridhī~raporṇu vīrebhiraśvairmaghavā bhavā naḥ ||

Soma Pavamāna, by you our ancient and wise progenitors performed their religious rites; harming the foes (yourself) unharmed slay the rākṣasas and be liberal in enriching us with male offspring and horses.

यथापवथा मनवे वयोधा अमित्रहा वरिवोविद्धविष्मान् । एवा पवस्व द्रविणं दधान इन्द्रे सं तिष्ठ जनयायुधानि ॥

yathāpavathā manave vayodhā amitrahā varivoviddhaviṣmān | evā pavasva draviṇaṃ dadhāna indre saṃ tiṣṭha janayāyudhāni ||

As you did flow to Manu possessing food, slaying enemies, acquiring wealth, having oblations, so now flow bringing us riches; abide you in Indra; make manifest (your) weapons.

पवस्व सोम मधुमाँ ऋतावापो वसानो अधि सानो अव्ये । अव द्रोणानि घृतवान्ति सीद मदिन्तमो मत्सर इन्द्रपानः ॥

pavasva soma madhumā~ ṛtāvāpo vasāno adhi sāno avye | ava droṇāni ghṛtavānti sīda madintamo matsara indrapānaḥ ||

Soma who have exhilarating juice, who are connected with the sacrifice, clothed with water flow upon the elevated fleece; alight upon the water-holding pitchers, you who are most exhilarating, intoxicating, the especial beverage of Indra.

वृष्टिं दिवः शतधारः पवस्व सहस्रसा वाजयुर्देववीतौ । सं सिन्धुभिः कलशे वावशानः समुस्रियाभिः प्रतिरन्न आयुः ॥

vṛṣṭiṃ divaḥ śatadhāraḥ pavasva sahasrasā vājayurdevavītau | saṃ sindhubhiḥ kalaśe vāvaśānaḥ samusriyābhiḥ pratiranna āyuḥ ||

(Soma), who flows in a hundred streams, pour rain from the firmament, you who are the giver of hundredfold (wealth), the bestower of food at the banquet of the gods; desirous of (the mixture) combine with the waters in the pitchers and with the curds and milk, prolonging our life.

एष स्य सोमो मतिभिः पुनानोऽत्यो न वाजी तरतीदरातीः । पयो न दुग्धमदितेरिषिरमुर्विव गातुः सुयमो न वोऴ्हा ॥

eṣa sya somo matibhiḥ punāno'tyo na vājī taratīdarātīḥ | payo na dugdhamaditeriṣiramurviva gātuḥ suyamo na voḻhā ||

This Soma (is) purified with praises, like a strong horse he overthrows (his) foes; (he is purified) like the strong milk milked from the cow, (flocked to by all) like a broad road, (and guided by the praisers) like a well-trained horse of burden.

स्वायुधः सोतृभिः पूयमानोऽभ्यर्ष गुह्यं चारु नाम । अभि वाजं सप्तिरिव श्रवस्याभि वायुमभि गा देव सोम ॥

svāyudhaḥ sotṛbhiḥ pūyamāno'bhyarṣa guhyaṃ cāru nāma | abhi vājaṃ saptiriva śravasyābhi vāyumabhi gā deva soma ||

Well-armed, purified by those who express you, send your concealed desirable form (into the pitchers); like a horse bring us food in our desire for food; divine Soma, bring us life, bring us cattle.

शिशुं जज्ञानं हर्यतं मृजन्ति शुम्भन्ति वह्निं मरुतो गणेन । कविर्गीर्भिः काव्येना कविः सन्त्सोमः पवित्रमत्येति रेभन् ॥

śiśuṃ jajñānaṃ haryataṃ mṛjanti śumbhanti vahniṃ maruto gaṇena | kavirgīrbhiḥ kāvyenā kaviḥ santsomaḥ pavitramatyeti rebhan ||

They cleanse the charming infant (Soma) at his birth; the Maruts decorate the bearer (of boons) with their troop; bring wise with songs, wise with wisdom, Soma passes clamorous through the filter.

ऋषिमना य ऋषिकृत्स्वर्षाः सहस्रणीथः पदवीः कवीनाम् । तृतीयं धाम महिषः सिषासन्त्सोमो विराजमनु राजति ष्टुप् ॥

ṛṣimanā ya ṛṣikṛtsvarṣāḥ sahasraṇīthaḥ padavīḥ kavīnām | tṛtīyaṃ dhāma mahiṣaḥ siṣāsantsomo virājamanu rājati ṣṭup ||

Thinking as a ṛṣi, acting as a ṛṣi, gaining heaven, praised by thousands, the guide of the wise, the mighty Soma desiring to attain the third region (heaven), being praised adds lustre to the illustrious (Indra).

चमूषच्छ्येनः शकुनो विभृत्वा गोविन्दुर्द्रप्स आयुधानि बिभ्रत् । अपामूर्मिं सचमानः समुद्रं तुरीयं धाम महिषो विवक्ति ॥

camūṣacchyenaḥ śakuno vibhṛtvā govindurdrapsa āyudhāni bibhrat | apāmūrmiṃ sacamānaḥ samudraṃ turīyaṃ dhāma mahiṣo vivakti ||

Seated on the ladles, praiseworthy, competent, supporting, acquiring cattle, flowing, bearing arms, attending upon the firmament, the sender of the waters, the mighty (Soma) attends the fourth sphere.

मर्यो न शुभ्रस्तन्वं मृजानोऽत्यो न सृत्वा सनये धनानाम् । वृषेव यूथा परि कोशमर्षन्कनिक्रदच्चम्वोरा विवेश ॥

maryo na śubhrastanvaṃ mṛjāno'tyo na sṛtvā sanaye dhanānām | vṛṣeva yūthā pari kośamarṣankanikradaccamvorā viveśa ||

Cleaning his person n like a richly-decorated man, flowing to acquire riches like a rapid (horse), rushing to the receptacle like a bull to the herd, (Soma) crying repeatedly enters the plural nks.

पवस्वेन्दो पवमानो महोभिः कनिक्रदत्परि वाराण्यर्ष । क्रीऴञ्चम्वोरा विश पूयमान इन्द्रं ते रसो मदिरो ममत्तु ॥

pavasvendo pavamāno mahobhiḥ kanikradatpari vārāṇyarṣa | krīḻañcamvorā viśa pūyamāna indraṃ te raso madiro mamattu ||

Flow, Indu, purified by the venerable (priests), rush through the filter crying repeatedly, sporting enter the plural nks purified, let your exhilarating beverage exhilarate Indra.

प्रास्य धारा बृहतीरसृग्रन्नक्तो गोभिः कलशाँ आ विवेश । साम कृण्वन्त्सामन्यो विपश्चित्क्रन्दन्नेत्यभि सख्युर्न जामिम् ॥

prāsya dhārā bṛhatīrasṛgrannakto gobhiḥ kalaśā~ ā viveśa | sāma kṛṇvantsāmanyo vipaścitkrandannetyabhi sakhyurna jāmim ||

His copious streams flow forth; blended with the milk and curds he enters the pitchers; uttering chants the skilful chanter (Soma) hasten invoking (the gods) towards (the cups) like (a libertine) to the wife of a friend.

अपघ्नन्नेषि पवमान शत्रून्प्रियां न जारो अभिगीत इन्दुः । सीदन्वनेषु शकुनो न पत्वा सोमः पुनानः कलशेषु सत्ता ॥

apaghnanneṣi pavamāna śatrūnpriyāṃ na jāro abhigīta induḥ | sīdanvaneṣu śakuno na patvā somaḥ punānaḥ kalaśeṣu sattā ||

O Pavamāna, eulogized (by the worshippers), distilling (into the receptacles), destroying the enemies, you go like a gallant to his mistress; falling like a bird alighting on the trees the Soma when purified alights upon the pitchers.

आ ते रुचः पवमानस्य सोम योषेव यन्ति सुदुघाः सुधाराः । हरिरानीतः पुरुवारो अप्स्वचिक्रदत्कलशे देवयूनाम् ॥

ā te rucaḥ pavamānasya soma yoṣeva yanti sudughāḥ sudhārāḥ | harirānītaḥ puruvāro apsvacikradatkalaśe devayūnām ||

The lustres, Soma, of you when being purified, approach with abundant milk with copious streams like a woman (giving milk to her child); the green-tinted Soma, the desired of many, has been brought to the waters and cries repeatedly in the pitcher of the god-loving (worshippers).
