[rv-8-93] • 34 श्लोकाः

उद्घेदभि श्रुतामघं वृषभं नर्यापसम् । अस्तारमेषि सूर्य ॥

udghedabhi śrutāmaghaṃ vṛṣabhaṃ naryāpasam | astārameṣi sūrya ||

You rise, O sun, on (the sacrifice of Indra) the showerer (of blessings), the bountiful giver, famed for hiswealth, the benefactor of men.

नव यो नवतिं पुरो बिभेद बाह्वोजसा । अहिं च वृत्रहावधीत् ॥

nava yo navatiṃ puro bibheda bāhvojasā | ahiṃ ca vṛtrahāvadhīt ||

Who cleft the ninety-nine cities by the strength of his arm, and, slayeer of Vṛtra, smote Ahi.

स न इन्द्रः शिवः सखाश्वावद्गोमद्यवमत् । उरुधारेव दोहते ॥

sa na indraḥ śivaḥ sakhāśvāvadgomadyavamat | urudhāreva dohate ||

May Indra, our auspicious friend, milk for us, like a richly-streaming (cow), wealth of horses, kine andbarley.

यदद्य कच्च वृत्रहन्नुदगा अभि सूर्य । सर्वं तदिन्द्र ते वशे ॥

yadadya kacca vṛtrahannudagā abhi sūrya | sarvaṃ tadindra te vaśe ||

Whatsoever, O Sun, slayr of Vṛtra, you have risen upon today-- it is all, Indra, under your power.

यद्वा प्रवृद्ध सत्पते न मरा इति मन्यसे । उतो तत्सत्यमित्तव ॥

yadvā pravṛddha satpate na marā iti manyase | uto tatsatyamittava ||

When, swelling in your might, lord of the good, you think, 'I shall not die', that thought of yours is indeedtrue.

ये सोमासः परावति ये अर्वावति सुन्विरे । सर्वाँस्ताँ इन्द्र गच्छसि ॥

ye somāsaḥ parāvati ye arvāvati sunvire | sarvā~stā~ indra gacchasi ||

You go at once, Indra, to all those Soma-libations which are effused afar or effused near.

तमिन्द्रं वाजयामसि महे वृत्राय हन्तवे । स वृषा वृषभो भुवत् ॥

tamindraṃ vājayāmasi mahe vṛtrāya hantave | sa vṛṣā vṛṣabho bhuvat ||

We invigorate that (great) Indra for the slaying of mighty Vṛtra, may he be a bounteous showerer (ofwealth).

इन्द्रः स दामने कृत ओजिष्ठः स मदे हितः । द्युम्नी श्लोकी स सोम्यः ॥

indraḥ sa dāmane kṛta ojiṣṭhaḥ sa made hitaḥ | dyumnī ślokī sa somyaḥ ||

Indra was created for giving; he, the most mighty was set over the exhilarating Soma; he, the gloriousone the lord of praise, is worthy of the Soma.

गिरा वज्रो न सम्भृतः सबलो अनपच्युतः । ववक्ष ऋष्वो अस्तृतः ॥

girā vajro na sambhṛtaḥ sabalo anapacyutaḥ | vavakṣa ṛṣvo astṛtaḥ ||

The mighty (Indra), unassailed by his foes, hastens to confer wealth on his worshippers-- renderedkeen by their praises as a weapon, full of strength and invincible.

दुर्गे चिन्नः सुगं कृधि गृणान इन्द्र गिर्वणः । त्वं च मघवन्वशः ॥

durge cinnaḥ sugaṃ kṛdhi gṛṇāna indra girvaṇaḥ | tvaṃ ca maghavanvaśaḥ ||

Indra, worthy of our praise, do you, hymned by us, make our path plural in even in the midst of difficulties,(hear us), Maghavan, if you love us.

यस्य ते नू चिदादिशं न मिनन्ति स्वराज्यम् । न देवो नाध्रिगुर्जनः ॥

yasya te nū cidādiśaṃ na minanti svarājyam | na devo nādhrigurjanaḥ ||

You whose command and rightful empire neither god nor irresistible hero can harm.

अधा ते अप्रतिष्कुतं देवी शुष्मं सपर्यतः । उभे सुशिप्र रोदसी ॥

adhā te apratiṣkutaṃ devī śuṣmaṃ saparyataḥ | ubhe suśipra rodasī ||

Yes, deity of the handsome jaw, the two goddesses, heaven and earth, both worship your resistlessconsuming might.

त्वमेतदधारयः कृष्णासु रोहिणीषु च । परुष्णीषु रुशत्पयः ॥

tvametadadhārayaḥ kṛṣṇāsu rohiṇīṣu ca | paruṣṇīṣu ruśatpayaḥ ||

It is you that keep this bright milk in the black, red, and spotted cows.

वि यदहेरध त्विषो विश्वे देवासो अक्रमुः । विदन्मृगस्य ताँ अमः ॥

vi yadaheradha tviṣo viśve devāso akramuḥ | vidanmṛgasya tā~ amaḥ ||

When all the gods fled in various directions from the splendour of the demon Ahi, and when fear of thedeer seized them.

आदु मे निवरो भुवद्वृत्रहादिष्ट पौंस्यम् । अजातशत्रुरस्तृतः ॥

ādu me nivaro bhuvadvṛtrahādiṣṭa pauṃsyam | ajātaśatrurastṛtaḥ ||

Then was my Indra the repeller; then did the smiter of Vṛtra put forth his might, he who has no existentenemies, the invincible.

श्रुतं वो वृत्रहन्तमं प्र शर्धं चर्षणीनाम् । आ शुषे राधसे महे ॥

śrutaṃ vo vṛtrahantamaṃ pra śardhaṃ carṣaṇīnām | ā śuṣe rādhase mahe ||

(Priests), I bring to you men, for great wealth, that renowned and mighty one who utterly destroyedVṛtra.

अया धिया च गव्यया पुरुणामन्पुरुष्टुत । यत्सोमेसोम आभवः ॥

ayā dhiyā ca gavyayā puruṇāmanpuruṣṭuta | yatsomesoma ābhavaḥ ||

O you bearing many names and praised by many, when you are present at our various Soma-libations,may we be endowed with a kine-desiring mind.

बोधिन्मना इदस्तु नो वृत्रहा भूर्यासुतिः । शृणोतु शक्र आशिषम् ॥

bodhinmanā idastu no vṛtrahā bhūryāsutiḥ | śṛṇotu śakra āśiṣam ||

May the slayer of Vṛtra, to whom many libations are offered, know our desires-- may Śakra hear ourpraises.

कया त्वं न ऊत्याभि प्र मन्दसे वृषन् । कया स्तोतृभ्य आ भर ॥

kayā tvaṃ na ūtyābhi pra mandase vṛṣan | kayā stotṛbhya ā bhara ||

Showerer (of blessings), with what coming of yours do you gladden us, with what coming bring you(wealth) to your worshippers?

कस्य वृषा सुते सचा नियुत्वान्वृषभो रणत् । वृत्रहा सोमपीतये ॥

kasya vṛṣā sute sacā niyutvānvṛṣabho raṇat | vṛtrahā somapītaye ||

At whose hymn-accompanied libations does the showerer, the lord of the Niyuts, the slayer of Vṛtra,rejoice to drink the Soma?

अभी षु णस्त्वं रयिं मन्दसानः सहस्रिणम् । प्रयन्ता बोधि दाशुषे ॥

abhī ṣu ṇastvaṃ rayiṃ mandasānaḥ sahasriṇam | prayantā bodhi dāśuṣe ||

Rejoicing (in our oblations), bring us wealth a thousandfold; remember that you are the giver to yourvotary.

पत्नीवन्तः सुता इम उशन्तो यन्ति वीतये । अपां जग्मिर्निचुम्पुणः ॥

patnīvantaḥ sutā ima uśanto yanti vītaye | apāṃ jagmirnicumpuṇaḥ ||

These Soma-libations with their wives proceed (to Indra) longing to be drunk; the stale Soma, plural asingto the taste, goes to the waters.

इष्टा होत्रा असृक्षतेन्द्रं वृधासो अध्वरे । अच्छावभृथमोजसा ॥

iṣṭā hotrā asṛkṣatendraṃ vṛdhāso adhvare | acchāvabhṛthamojasā ||

The sacrificing priests, invigorating (Indra) by their offerings at the sacrifice, have by their mightdismissed him to the avabhṛtha.

इह त्या सधमाद्या हरी हिरण्यकेश्या । वोऴ्हामभि प्रयो हितम् ॥

iha tyā sadhamādyā harī hiraṇyakeśyā | voḻhāmabhi prayo hitam ||

May those two golden-maned steeds together exulting bring him to our wholesome offering.

तुभ्यं सोमाः सुता इमे स्तीर्णं बर्हिर्विभावसो । स्तोतृभ्य इन्द्रमा वह ॥

tubhyaṃ somāḥ sutā ime stīrṇaṃ barhirvibhāvaso | stotṛbhya indramā vaha ||

Resplendent (Agni), these Soma-libations are effused for you, the clipped grass is spread; bring Indrahere for his worshippers.

आ ते दक्षं वि रोचना दधद्रत्ना वि दाशुषे । स्तोतृभ्य इन्द्रमर्चत ॥

ā te dakṣaṃ vi rocanā dadhadratnā vi dāśuṣe | stotṛbhya indramarcata ||

May he give strength and his brilliant heaven and precious things to you his worshipper, and to hispraising priests; worship Indra.

आ ते दधामीन्द्रियमुक्था विश्वा शतक्रतो । स्तोतृभ्य इन्द्र मृऴय ॥

ā te dadhāmīndriyamukthā viśvā śatakrato | stotṛbhya indra mṛḻaya ||

I prepare, Śatakratu, your strong (Soma) and all your praises; be gracious, Indra, to your hymners.

भद्रम्भद्रं न आ भरेषमूर्जं शतक्रतो । यदिन्द्र मृऴयासि नः ॥

bhadrambhadraṃ na ā bhareṣamūrjaṃ śatakrato | yadindra mṛḻayāsi naḥ ||

Bring us what is most auspicious, Śatakratu, (bring us) food and strength, if you have favour to us,Indra.

स नो विश्वान्या भर सुवितानि शतक्रतो । यदिन्द्र मृऴयासि नः ॥

sa no viśvānyā bhara suvitāni śatakrato | yadindra mṛḻayāsi naḥ ||

Bring us all blessings, Śatakratu, if you have favour to us, Indra.

त्वामिद्वृत्रहन्तम सुतावन्तो हवामहे । यदिन्द्र मृऴयासि नः ॥

tvāmidvṛtrahantama sutāvanto havāmahe | yadindra mṛḻayāsi naḥ ||

Bearing the effused libation, we invoke you, mightiest slayer of Vṛtra, if you have favour to us, Indra.

उप नो हरिभिः सुतं याहि मदानां पते । उप नो हरिभिः सुतम् ॥

upa no haribhiḥ sutaṃ yāhi madānāṃ pate | upa no haribhiḥ sutam ||

Come with your steeds to our effused libation, lord of the Soma-- come with your steds to our effusedlibation.

द्विता यो वृत्रहन्तमो विद इन्द्रः शतक्रतुः । उप नो हरिभिः सुतम् ॥

dvitā yo vṛtrahantamo vida indraḥ śatakratuḥ | upa no haribhiḥ sutam ||

Indra, Śatakratu, mightiest slayer of Vṛtra, you whose power is known in a two-fold way, come withyour steeds to our effused libation.

त्वं हि वृत्रहन्नेषां पाता सोमानामसि । उप नो हरिभिः सुतम् ॥

tvaṃ hi vṛtrahanneṣāṃ pātā somānāmasi | upa no haribhiḥ sutam ||

Slayer of Vṛtra, you are the drinker of these Soma juices, come with your steeds to our effused libation.

इन्द्र इषे ददातु न ऋभुक्षणमृभुं रयिम् । वाजी ददातु वाजिनम् ॥

indra iṣe dadātu na ṛbhukṣaṇamṛbhuṃ rayim | vājī dadātu vājinam ||

May Indra bring to us the bounteous Ṛbhu Ṛbhukṣaṇa to partake of our sacrificial viands; may he,the mighty, bring the mighty (Vāja).
