[rv-8-7] • 36 श्लोकाः

प्र यद्वस्त्रिष्टुभमिषं मरुतो विप्रो अक्षरत् । वि पर्वतेषु राजथ ॥

pra yadvastriṣṭubhamiṣaṃ maruto vipro akṣarat | vi parvateṣu rājatha ||

When the pious worshipper offers you, Maruts, food at the three diurnal rites, then you havesovereignty over the mountains.

यदङ्ग तविषीयवो यामं शुभ्रा अचिध्वम् । नि पर्वता अहासत ॥

yadaṅga taviṣīyavo yāmaṃ śubhrā acidhvam | ni parvatā ahāsata ||

When, glorious and powerful (Maruts), you fit out your chariot, the mountains depart (from their plural ces).

उदीरयन्त वायुभिर्वाश्रासः पृश्निमातरः । धुक्षन्त पिप्युषीमिषम् ॥

udīrayanta vāyubhirvāśrāsaḥ pṛśnimātaraḥ | dhukṣanta pipyuṣīmiṣam ||

The loud-sounding sons of Pṛśni drive with their breezes (the clouds), they milk forth nutritioussustenance.

वपन्ति मरुतो मिहं प्र वेपयन्ति पर्वतान् । यद्यामं यान्ति वायुभिः ॥

vapanti maruto mihaṃ pra vepayanti parvatān | yadyāmaṃ yānti vāyubhiḥ ||

The Maruts scatter the rain, they shake the mountains, when they mount their chariot, with the winds.

नि यद्यामाय वो गिरिर्नि सिन्धवो विधर्मणे । महे शुष्माय येमिरे ॥

ni yadyāmāya vo girirni sindhavo vidharmaṇe | mahe śuṣmāya yemire ||

The mountains are curbed, the rivers are restrained at your coming, for the upholding of your greatstrength.

युष्माँ उ नक्तमूतये युष्मान्दिवा हवामहे । युष्मान्प्रयत्यध्वरे ॥

yuṣmā~ u naktamūtaye yuṣmāndivā havāmahe | yuṣmānprayatyadhvare ||

We invoke you for protection by night, (we invoke) you by day, (we invoke) you when the sacrifice is inprogress.

उदु त्ये अरुणप्सवश्चित्रा यामेभिरीरते । वाश्रा अधि ष्णुना दिवः ॥

udu tye aruṇapsavaścitrā yāmebhirīrate | vāśrā adhi ṣṇunā divaḥ ||

Truly these purple-hued, wonderful, clamorous Maruts proceed with their chariots in the height aove thesky.

सृजन्ति रश्मिमोजसा पन्थां सूर्याय यातवे । ते भानुभिर्वि तस्थिरे ॥

sṛjanti raśmimojasā panthāṃ sūryāya yātave | te bhānubhirvi tasthire ||

They, who by their might open a radiant path for the sun to travel, they pervade (the world) with lustre.

इमां मे मरुतो गिरमिमं स्तोममृभुक्षणः । इमं मे वनता हवम् ॥

imāṃ me maruto giramimaṃ stomamṛbhukṣaṇaḥ | imaṃ me vanatā havam ||

Accept, Maruts, this my praise, (accept), mighty ones, this my adoration, (accept) this my invocation.

त्रीणि सरांसि पृश्नयो दुदुह्रे वज्रिणे मधु । उत्सं कवन्धमुद्रिणम् ॥

trīṇi sarāṃsi pṛśnayo duduhre vajriṇe madhu | utsaṃ kavandhamudriṇam ||

The kine have filled for the thunderer three lakes of the sweet (Soma) from the dripping water-bearingcloud.

मरुतो यद्ध वो दिवः सुम्नायन्तो हवामहे । आ तू न उप गन्तन ॥

maruto yaddha vo divaḥ sumnāyanto havāmahe | ā tū na upa gantana ||

When, Maruts, desirous of felicity, we invoke you from heaven, come unto us quickly.

यूयं हि ष्ठा सुदानवो रुद्रा ऋभुक्षणो दमे । उत प्रचेतसो मदे ॥

yūyaṃ hi ṣṭhā sudānavo rudrā ṛbhukṣaṇo dame | uta pracetaso made ||

Munificent, mighty Rudras, you in the sacrificial hall are wise (even) in the exhilaration (of the Soma).

आ नो रयिं मदच्युतं पुरुक्षुं विश्वधायसम् । इयर्ता मरुतो दिवः ॥

ā no rayiṃ madacyutaṃ purukṣuṃ viśvadhāyasam | iyartā maruto divaḥ ||

Send us, Maruts, from heaven exhilarating, many lauded, all-sustaining riches.

अधीव यद्गिरीणां यामं शुभ्रा अचिध्वम् । सुवानैर्मन्दध्व इन्दुभिः ॥

adhīva yadgirīṇāṃ yāmaṃ śubhrā acidhvam | suvānairmandadhva indubhiḥ ||

When, bright (Maruts), you harness your car over the mountains, then you exhilarate (yourselves) withthe effusing Soma.

एतावतश्चिदेषां सुम्नं भिक्षेत मर्त्यः । अदाभ्यस्य मन्मभिः ॥

etāvataścideṣāṃ sumnaṃ bhikṣeta martyaḥ | adābhyasya manmabhiḥ ||

A man should solicit happiness of them with praises of such an unconquerable (company).

ये द्रप्सा इव रोदसी धमन्त्यनु वृष्टिभिः । उत्सं दुहन्तो अक्षितम् ॥

ye drapsā iva rodasī dhamantyanu vṛṣṭibhiḥ | utsaṃ duhanto akṣitam ||

They who, like dropping showers, inflate heaven and earth with rain, milking the inexhaustible cloud.

उदु स्वानेभिरीरत उद्रथैरुदु वायुभिः । उत्स्तोमैः पृश्निमातरः ॥

udu svānebhirīrata udrathairudu vāyubhiḥ | utstomaiḥ pṛśnimātaraḥ ||

The sons of Pṛśni rise up with shouts, with chariots, with winds, with praises.

येनाव तुर्वशं यदुं येन कण्वं धनस्पृतम् । राये सु तस्य धीमहि ॥

yenāva turvaśaṃ yaduṃ yena kaṇvaṃ dhanaspṛtam | rāye su tasya dhīmahi ||

We meditate on that (genitive rosity) whereby for (the sake of granting them) riches you have protectedTurvaśa and Yadu and the wealth-desiring Kaṇva.

इमा उ वः सुदानवो घृतं न पिप्युषीरिषः । वर्धान्काण्वस्य मन्मभिः ॥

imā u vaḥ sudānavo ghṛtaṃ na pipyuṣīriṣaḥ | vardhānkāṇvasya manmabhiḥ ||

Munificent (Maruts), may these (sacrificial) viands, nutritious as butter, together with the praises of thedescendant of Kaṇva, afford you augmentation.

क्व नूनं सुदानवो मदथा वृक्तबर्हिषः । ब्रह्मा को वः सपर्यति ॥

kva nūnaṃ sudānavo madathā vṛktabarhiṣaḥ | brahmā ko vaḥ saparyati ||

Munificent (Maruts), for whom the sacred grass has been trimmed, where now are you beingexhilarated? What pious worshipper detains you as he) adores you?

नहि ष्म यद्ध वः पुरा स्तोमेभिर्वृक्तबर्हिषः । शर्धाँ ऋतस्य जिन्वथ ॥

nahi ṣma yaddha vaḥ purā stomebhirvṛktabarhiṣaḥ | śardhā~ ṛtasya jinvatha ||

(Maruts), for whom the sacred grass is trimmed, it cannot be (that you submit to be detained), for youhave derived strength from the sacrifice, formerly (accompanied) by our praises.

समु त्ये महतीरपः सं क्षोणी समु सूर्यम् । सं वज्रं पर्वशो दधुः ॥

samu tye mahatīrapaḥ saṃ kṣoṇī samu sūryam | saṃ vajraṃ parvaśo dadhuḥ ||

They have concentrated the abundant waters, they have held together the heaven and earth, they havesustained the sun, they have divided (Vṛtra) joint by joint with the thunderbolt.

वि वृत्रं पर्वशो ययुर्वि पर्वताँ अराजिनः । चक्राणा वृष्णि पौंस्यम् ॥

vi vṛtraṃ parvaśo yayurvi parvatā~ arājinaḥ | cakrāṇā vṛṣṇi pauṃsyam ||

Independent of a ruler, they have divided Vṛtra joint by joint; they have shattered the mountains,manifesting manly vigour.

अनु त्रितस्य युध्यतः शुष्ममावन्नुत क्रतुम् । अन्विन्द्रं वृत्रतूर्ये ॥

anu tritasya yudhyataḥ śuṣmamāvannuta kratum | anvindraṃ vṛtratūrye ||

They have come to the aid of the warring Trita, invigorating his strength, and (animating) his acts; theyhave come to the aid of Indra, for the destruction of Vṛtra.

विद्युद्धस्ता अभिद्यवः शिप्राः शीर्षन्हिरण्ययीः । शुभ्रा व्यञ्जत श्रिये ॥

vidyuddhastā abhidyavaḥ śiprāḥ śīrṣanhiraṇyayīḥ | śubhrā vyañjata śriye ||

The birlliant (Maruts), bearing the lightning in their hands, radiant above all, gloriously display theirgolden helmets on their heads.

उशना यत्परावत उक्ष्णो रन्ध्रमयातन । द्यौर्न चक्रदद्भिया ॥

uśanā yatparāvata ukṣṇo randhramayātana | dyaurna cakradadbhiyā ||

Glorified, (Maruts), by Uśanas, when you approach from afar to the opening of the rainy (firmament),then (the dwellers on earth), like those in heaven, are clamorous through fear.

आ नो मखस्य दावनेऽश्वैर्हिरण्यपाणिभिः । देवास उप गन्तन ॥

ā no makhasya dāvane'śvairhiraṇyapāṇibhiḥ | devāsa upa gantana ||

Come, gods, to (show your) liberality at our sacrifice with your golden-footed steeds.

यदेषां पृषती रथे प्रष्टिर्वहति रोहितः । यान्ति शुभ्रा रिणन्नपः ॥

yadeṣāṃ pṛṣatī rathe praṣṭirvahati rohitaḥ | yānti śubhrā riṇannapaḥ ||

When the spotted antelope or the swift tawny deer conveys them in their chariot, then the brilliant(Maruts) depart, and the rains have gone.

सुषोमे शर्यणावत्यार्जीके पस्त्यावति । ययुर्निचक्रया नरः ॥

suṣome śaryaṇāvatyārjīke pastyāvati | yayurnicakrayā naraḥ ||

The leaders of rites have proceeded with downward chariot-wheels to the Ṛjīka (Ārjīka) country,where lies the Śaryaṇāvat, abounding in dwellings, and where Soma is plural ntiful.

कदा गच्छाथ मरुत इत्था विप्रं हवमानम् । मार्डीकेभिर्नाधमानम् ॥

kadā gacchātha maruta itthā vipraṃ havamānam | mārḍīkebhirnādhamānam ||

When, maruts, will you go with joy-bestowing riches to the sage thus adoring you, and soliciting (you forwealth)?

कद्ध नूनं कधप्रियो यदिन्द्रमजहातन । को वः सखित्व ओहते ॥

kaddha nūnaṃ kadhapriyo yadindramajahātana | ko vaḥ sakhitva ohate ||

When was it, Maruts, who are gratified by praise, that you really deserted Indra? Who is there thatenjoys your friendship?

सहो षु णो वज्रहस्तैः कण्वासो अग्निं मरुद्भिः । स्तुषे हिरण्यवाशीभिः ॥

saho ṣu ṇo vajrahastaiḥ kaṇvāso agniṃ marudbhiḥ | stuṣe hiraṇyavāśībhiḥ ||

Do you of our race of Kaṇva praise Agni together with the Maruts, bearing the thunderbolt in theirhands, and armed with golden lances.

ओ षु वृष्णः प्रयज्यूना नव्यसे सुविताय । ववृत्यां चित्रवाजान् ॥

o ṣu vṛṣṇaḥ prayajyūnā navyase suvitāya | vavṛtyāṃ citravājān ||

I bring to my presence, for the sake of most excellent prosperity, the showerers (of desires), theadorable (Maruts), the possessors of wonderful strength.

गिरयश्चिन्नि जिहते पर्शानासो मन्यमानाः । पर्वताश्चिन्नि येमिरे ॥

girayaścinni jihate parśānāso manyamānāḥ | parvatāścinni yemire ||

The hills, oppressed and agitated by them, move (from their plural ces), the mountains are restraineḍ

आक्ष्णयावानो वहन्त्यन्तरिक्षेण पततः । धातारः स्तुवते वयः ॥

ākṣṇayāvāno vahantyantarikṣeṇa patataḥ | dhātāraḥ stuvate vayaḥ ||

(Their horses), quickly traversing (space), bear them travelling through the firmament, giving food to theworshipper.

अग्निर्हि जानि पूर्व्यश्छन्दो न सूरो अर्चिषा । ते भानुभिर्वि तस्थिरे ॥

agnirhi jāni pūrvyaśchando na sūro arciṣā | te bhānubhirvi tasthire ||

Agni was born the first among the gods, like the brilliant sun in splendour; then they (the Maruts) stoodround in their radiance.
