[rv-8-6] • 48 श्लोकाः

महाँ इन्द्रो य ओजसा पर्जन्यो वृष्टिमाँ इव । स्तोमैर्वत्सस्य वावृधे ॥

mahā~ indro ya ojasā parjanyo vṛṣṭimā~ iva | stomairvatsasya vāvṛdhe ||

Indra, who is great in might like Parjanya the disributor of rain, is magnified by the praises o Vatsa.

प्रजामृतस्य पिप्रतः प्र यद्भरन्त वह्नयः । विप्रा ऋतस्य वाहसा ॥

prajāmṛtasya piprataḥ pra yadbharanta vahnayaḥ | viprā ṛtasya vāhasā ||

When his steeds filling (the heavens) bear onwards the progeny of the sacrifice, then the pious(magnify him) with the hymns of the rite.

कण्वा इन्द्रं यदक्रत स्तोमैर्यज्ञस्य साधनम् । जामि ब्रुवत आयुधम् ॥

kaṇvā indraṃ yadakrata stomairyajñasya sādhanam | jāmi bruvata āyudham ||

When the Kaṇvas by their praises have made Indra the accomplisher of the sacrifice, they declare allweapons needless.

समस्य मन्यवे विशो विश्वा नमन्त कृष्टयः । समुद्रायेव सिन्धवः ॥

samasya manyave viśo viśvā namanta kṛṣṭayaḥ | samudrāyeva sindhavaḥ ||

All people, (all) men bow down before his anger, as rivers (decline) towards the sea.

ओजस्तदस्य तित्विष उभे यत्समवर्तयत् । इन्द्रश्चर्मेव रोदसी ॥

ojastadasya titviṣa ubhe yatsamavartayat | indraścarmeva rodasī ||

His might is manifest, for Indra folds and unfolds both heaven and earth, as (one spreads or rolls up) askin.

वि चिद्वृत्रस्य दोधतो वज्रेण शतपर्वणा । शिरो बिभेद वृष्णिना ॥

vi cidvṛtrasya dodhato vajreṇa śataparvaṇā | śiro bibheda vṛṣṇinā ||

He has cloven with the powerful hundred-edged thunderbolt the head of the turbulent Vṛtra.

इमा अभि प्र णोनुमो विपामग्रेषु धीतयः । अग्नेः शोचिर्न दिद्युतः ॥

imā abhi pra ṇonumo vipāmagreṣu dhītayaḥ | agneḥ śocirna didyutaḥ ||

In front of one worshipper we repeatedly utter our praises, radiant as the flame of fire.

गुहा सतीरुप त्मना प्र यच्छोचन्त धीतयः । कण्वा ऋतस्य धारया ॥

guhā satīrupa tmanā pra yacchocanta dhītayaḥ | kaṇvā ṛtasya dhārayā ||

The praises that are offered in secret shine brightly when approaching (Indra) of their own will; theKaṇvas (combine them) with the stream of the Soma.

प्र तमिन्द्र नशीमहि रयिं गोमन्तमश्विनम् । प्र ब्रह्म पूर्वचित्तये ॥

pra tamindra naśīmahi rayiṃ gomantamaśvinam | pra brahma pūrvacittaye ||

May we obtain, Indra, that wealth which comprises cattle, horses, and food, before it be known toothers.

अहमिद्धि पितुष्परि मेधामृतस्य जग्रभ । अहं सूर्य इवाजनि ॥

ahamiddhi pituṣpari medhāmṛtasya jagrabha | ahaṃ sūrya ivājani ||

I have verily acquired the favour of the true protector (Indra); I have become (bright) as the sun.

अहं प्रत्नेन मन्मना गिरः शुम्भामि कण्ववत् । येनेन्द्रः शुष्ममिद्दधे ॥

ahaṃ pratnena manmanā giraḥ śumbhāmi kaṇvavat | yenendraḥ śuṣmamiddadhe ||

I grace my words with ancient praise, like Kaṇva; whereby Indra assuredly enjoys vigour.

ये त्वामिन्द्र न तुष्टुवुॠषयो ये च तुष्टुवुः । ममेद्वर्धस्व सुष्टुतः ॥

ye tvāmindra na tuṣṭuvuṝṣayo ye ca tuṣṭuvuḥ | mamedvardhasva suṣṭutaḥ ||

Amid those who do not praise you, Indra, amid the Ṛṣis who do praise you, by my praise beingglorified, do you increase.

यदस्य मन्युरध्वनीद्वि वृत्रं पर्वशो रुजन् । अपः समुद्रमैरयत् ॥

yadasya manyuradhvanīdvi vṛtraṃ parvaśo rujan | apaḥ samudramairayat ||

When his wrath thundered, dividing Vṛtra joint by joint, then he drove the waters to the ocean.

नि शुष्ण इन्द्र धर्णसिं वज्रं जघन्थ दस्यवि । वृषा ह्युग्र शृण्विषे ॥

ni śuṣṇa indra dharṇasiṃ vajraṃ jaghantha dasyavi | vṛṣā hyugra śṛṇviṣe ||

You have hurled your wielded thunderbolt upon the impious Śuṣṇa; you are renowned, fierce Indra,as the showerer (of benefits).

न द्याव इन्द्रमोजसा नान्तरिक्षाणि वज्रिणम् । न विव्यचन्त भूमयः ॥

na dyāva indramojasā nāntarikṣāṇi vajriṇam | na vivyacanta bhūmayaḥ ||

Neither the heavens, nor the realms of the firmament, nor the regions of the earth, equal the thundererIndra in strength.

यस्त इन्द्र महीरपः स्तभूयमान आशयत् । नि तं पद्यासु शिश्नथः ॥

yasta indra mahīrapaḥ stabhūyamāna āśayat | ni taṃ padyāsu śiśnathaḥ ||

You, Indra, have cast into the rushing streams him who lay obstructing your copious waters.

य इमे रोदसी मही समीची समजग्रभीत् । तमोभिरिन्द्र तं गुहः ॥

ya ime rodasī mahī samīcī samajagrabhīt | tamobhirindra taṃ guhaḥ ||

You have enveloped with darkness, Indra, him who had seized upon these spacious aggregated(realms of) heaven and earth.

य इन्द्र यतयस्त्वा भृगवो ये च तुष्टुवुः । ममेदुग्र श्रुधी हवम् ॥

ya indra yatayastvā bhṛgavo ye ca tuṣṭuvuḥ | mamedugra śrudhī havam ||

Amid those pious sages, amid those Bhṛgus, who have glorified you, hear also, fierce Indra, myinvocation.

इमास्त इन्द्र पृश्नयो घृतं दुहत आशिरम् । एनामृतस्य पिप्युषीः ॥

imāsta indra pṛśnayo ghṛtaṃ duhata āśiram | enāmṛtasya pipyuṣīḥ ||

These, your spotted cows, the nourishers of the sacrifice, yields, Indra, their butter, and this mixture (ofmilk and curds).

या इन्द्र प्रस्वस्त्वासा गर्भमचक्रिरन् । परि धर्मेव सूर्यम् ॥

yā indra prasvastvāsā garbhamacakriran | pari dharmeva sūryam ||

These prolific cattle became pregnant, having taken into their mouths, Indra, (the products of yourvigour) like the all-sustaining sun.

त्वामिच्छवसस्पते कण्वा उक्थेन वावृधुः । त्वां सुतास इन्दवः ॥

tvāmicchavasaspate kaṇvā ukthena vāvṛdhuḥ | tvāṃ sutāsa indavaḥ ||

Lord of strength, the Kaṇvas verily invigorate you by praise; the effused Soma (invigorates) you.

तवेदिन्द्र प्रणीतिषूत प्रशस्तिरद्रिवः । यज्ञो वितन्तसाय्यः ॥

tavedindra praṇītiṣūta praśastiradrivaḥ | yajño vitantasāyyaḥ ||

Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, excellent praise (is addressed to you) on account of your goodguidance, as is a most extended sacrifice.

आ न इन्द्र महीमिषं पुरं न दर्षि गोमतीम् । उत प्रजां सुवीर्यम् ॥

ā na indra mahīmiṣaṃ puraṃ na darṣi gomatīm | uta prajāṃ suvīryam ||

Be willing to grant us abundant food with cattle; (to grant us) protection, progeny, and vigour.

उत त्यदाश्वश्व्यं यदिन्द्र नाहुषीष्वा । अग्रे विक्षु प्रदीदयत् ॥

uta tyadāśvaśvyaṃ yadindra nāhuṣīṣvā | agre vikṣu pradīdayat ||

May that herd of swift horses, which formerly shone among the people of nahuṣa, (be granted), Indra,to us.

अभि व्रजं न तत्निषे सूर उपाकचक्षसम् । यदिन्द्र मृऴयासि नः ॥

abhi vrajaṃ na tatniṣe sūra upākacakṣasam | yadindra mṛḻayāsi naḥ ||

Sage Indra, you spread (the cattle) over the adjacent pastures when you are favourably inclined towardus.

यदङ्ग तविषीयस इन्द्र प्रराजसि क्षितीः । महाँ अपार ओजसा ॥

yadaṅga taviṣīyasa indra prarājasi kṣitīḥ | mahā~ apāra ojasā ||

When you put forth your might, you reign, Indra, over mankind; surpassing are you, and unlimited instrumental ength.

तं त्वा हविष्मतीर्विश उप ब्रुवत ऊतये । उरुज्रयसमिन्दुभिः ॥

taṃ tvā haviṣmatīrviśa upa bruvata ūtaye | urujrayasamindubhiḥ ||

The people offering oblations call upon you, the pervader of space, with libations for protection.

उपह्वरे गिरीणां संगथे च नदीनाम् । धिया विप्रो अजायत ॥

upahvare girīṇāṃ saṃgathe ca nadīnām | dhiyā vipro ajāyata ||

The wise (Indra) has been engendered by holy rites on the skirts of the mountains, at the confluence ofrivers.

अतः समुद्रमुद्वतश्चिकित्वाँ अव पश्यति । यतो विपान एजति ॥

ataḥ samudramudvataścikitvā~ ava paśyati | yato vipāna ejati ||

From the lofty region in which pervading he abides, Indra the intelligent looks down upon the offeredlibation.

आदित्प्रत्नस्य रेतसो ज्योतिष्पश्यन्ति वासरम् । परो यदिध्यते दिवा ॥

āditpratnasya retaso jyotiṣpaśyanti vāsaram | paro yadidhyate divā ||

Then (men) behold the daily light of the ancient shedder of water, when he shines above the heaveṇ

कण्वास इन्द्र ते मतिं विश्वे वर्धन्ति पौंस्यम् । उतो शविष्ठ वृष्ण्यम् ॥

kaṇvāsa indra te matiṃ viśve vardhanti pauṃsyam | uto śaviṣṭha vṛṣṇyam ||

All the Kaṇvas, Indra, magnify your wisdom, your manhood, and, most mighty one, your strength.

इमां म इन्द्र सुष्टुतिं जुषस्व प्र सु मामव । उत प्र वर्धया मतिम् ॥

imāṃ ma indra suṣṭutiṃ juṣasva pra su māmava | uta pra vardhayā matim ||

Be propitiated, Indra, by this my praise; carefully protect me, and give increase to my understanding.

उत ब्रह्मण्या वयं तुभ्यं प्रवृद्ध वज्रिवः । विप्रा अतक्ष्म जीवसे ॥

uta brahmaṇyā vayaṃ tubhyaṃ pravṛddha vajrivaḥ | viprā atakṣma jīvase ||

Wielder of the thunderbolt, magnified (by our praises), we your worshippers have offered to you theseprayers for our existence.

अभि कण्वा अनूषतापो न प्रवता यतीः । इन्द्रं वनन्वती मतिः ॥

abhi kaṇvā anūṣatāpo na pravatā yatīḥ | indraṃ vananvatī matiḥ ||

The Kaṇvas glorify Indra; like waters rushing down a declivity, praise spontaneously seeks Indra.

इन्द्रमुक्थानि वावृधुः समुद्रमिव सिन्धवः । अनुत्तमन्युमजरम् ॥

indramukthāni vāvṛdhuḥ samudramiva sindhavaḥ | anuttamanyumajaram ||

Holy praises magnify Indra, the imperishable, the implacable, as rivers (swell) the ocean.

आ नो याहि परावतो हरिभ्यां हर्यताभ्याम् । इममिन्द्र सुतं पिब ॥

ā no yāhi parāvato haribhyāṃ haryatābhyām | imamindra sutaṃ piba ||

Come to us from afar with your beloved horses; drink, Indra, this libation.

त्वामिद्वृत्रहन्तम जनासो वृक्तबर्हिषः । हवन्ते वाजसातये ॥

tvāmidvṛtrahantama janāso vṛktabarhiṣaḥ | havante vājasātaye ||

Destroyer of Vṛtra, men strewing the clipped sacred grass invoke you for the obtaining of food.

अनु त्वा रोदसी उभे चक्रं न वर्त्येतशम् । अनु सुवानास इन्दवः ॥

anu tvā rodasī ubhe cakraṃ na vartyetaśam | anu suvānāsa indavaḥ ||

Both heaven and earth follow you as the wheels (of a car follow) the horse; the streams of the Somapoured forth (by the priests) follow (you).

मन्दस्वा सु स्वर्णर उतेन्द्र शर्यणावति । मत्स्वा विवस्वतो मती ॥

mandasvā su svarṇara utendra śaryaṇāvati | matsvā vivasvato matī ||

Rejoice, Indra, at the heaven-guiding sacrifice as Śaryaṇāvat; be exhilarated by the praise of theworshipper.

वावृधान उप द्यवि वृषा वज्र्यरोरवीत् । वृत्रहा सोमपातमः ॥

vāvṛdhāna upa dyavi vṛṣā vajryaroravīt | vṛtrahā somapātamaḥ ||

The vast wielder of the thunderbolt, the slayer of Vṛtra, the deep quaffer of the Soma, the showerer,roars near at hand in the sky.

ऋषिर्हि पूर्वजा अस्येक ईशान ओजसा । इन्द्र चोष्कूयसे वसु ॥

ṛṣirhi pūrvajā asyeka īśāna ojasā | indra coṣkūyase vasu ||

You are a Ṛṣi, the first-born (of the gods), the chief, the ruler (over all) by your strength; you giverepeatedly, Indra, wealth.

अस्माकं त्वा सुताँ उप वीतपृष्ठा अभि प्रयः । शतं वहन्तु हरयः ॥

asmākaṃ tvā sutā~ upa vītapṛṣṭhā abhi prayaḥ | śataṃ vahantu harayaḥ ||

May your hundred sleek-backed horses bring you to our libations, to our (sacrificial) food.

इमां सु पूर्व्यां धियं मधोर्घृतस्य पिप्युषीम् । कण्वा उक्थेन वावृधुः ॥

imāṃ su pūrvyāṃ dhiyaṃ madhorghṛtasya pipyuṣīm | kaṇvā ukthena vāvṛdhuḥ ||

The Kaṇvas augment by praise this ancient rite intended (to obtain) an abundance of sweet water.

इन्द्रमिद्विमहीनां मेधे वृणीत मर्त्यः । इन्द्रं सनिष्युरूतये ॥

indramidvimahīnāṃ medhe vṛṇīta martyaḥ | indraṃ saniṣyurūtaye ||

The mortal (adorer) selects at the sacrifice Indra from among the mighty (gods); he who is desirous ofwealth (worships) Indra for protection.

अर्वाञ्चं त्वा पुरुष्टुत प्रियमेधस्तुता हरी । सोमपेयाय वक्षतः ॥

arvāñcaṃ tvā puruṣṭuta priyamedhastutā harī | somapeyāya vakṣataḥ ||

May your horses, praised by the pious priests, bring you, who are the praised of many, down to drinkthe Soma.

शतमहं तिरिन्दिरे सहस्रं पर्शावा ददे । राधांसि याद्वानाम् ॥

śatamahaṃ tirindire sahasraṃ parśāvā dade | rādhāṃsi yādvānām ||

I have accepted from Tirindira, the son of Paraśu, hundreds and thousands of the treasures of meṇ

त्रीणि शतान्यर्वतां सहस्रा दश गोनाम् । ददुष्पज्राय साम्ने ॥

trīṇi śatānyarvatāṃ sahasrā daśa gonām | daduṣpajrāya sāmne ||

(These princes) have given to the chanter Pajra three hundred horses, ten thousand cattle.

उदानट् ककुहो दिवमुष्ट्राञ्चतुर्युजो ददत् । श्रवसा याद्वं जनम् ॥

udānaṭ kakuho divamuṣṭrāñcaturyujo dadat | śravasā yādvaṃ janam ||

The exalted (prince) has been raised by fame to heaven, for he has given camels laden with four (loadsof gold), and Yādva people (as slaves).
