[rv-8-27] • 22 श्लोकाः

अग्निरुक्थे पुरोहितो ग्रावाणो बर्हिरध्वरे । ऋचा यामि मरुतो ब्रह्मणस्पतिं देवाँ अवो वरेण्यम् ॥

agnirukthe purohito grāvāṇo barhiradhvare | ṛcā yāmi maruto brahmaṇaspatiṃ devā~ avo vareṇyam ||

Agni is the Purohita at the sacrifice; the stones, the sacred grass (are prepared) for the ceremony. Iinvoke with the holy verse the Maruts, Brahmaṇaspati, and all the gods, for their desirable protection.

आ पशुं गासि पृथिवीं वनस्पतीनुषासा नक्तमोषधीः । विश्वे च नो वसवो विश्ववेदसो धीनां भूत प्रावितारः ॥

ā paśuṃ gāsi pṛthivīṃ vanaspatīnuṣāsā naktamoṣadhīḥ | viśve ca no vasavo viśvavedaso dhīnāṃ bhūta prāvitāraḥ ||

You come (Agni) to the victim, to the dwelling (of the worshipper), to the touchwood, to the Soma, atdawn and at night; universal deities, givers of wealth, knowing all things, be the defenders of our pious actṣ

प्र सू न एत्वध्वरोऽग्ना देवेषु पूर्व्यः । आदित्येषु प्र वरुणे धृतव्रते मरुत्सु विश्वभानुषु ॥

pra sū na etvadhvaro'gnā deveṣu pūrvyaḥ | ādityeṣu pra varuṇe dhṛtavrate marutsu viśvabhānuṣu ||

Let the ancient sacrifice proceed first to Agni, then to the gods, -- to the Ādityas, to Varuṇa, observantof obligations, to the all-resplendent Maruts.

विश्वे हि ष्मा मनवे विश्ववेदसो भुवन्वृधे रिशादसः । अरिष्टेभिः पायुभिर्विश्ववेदसो यन्ता नोऽवृकं छर्दिः ॥

viśve hi ṣmā manave viśvavedaso bhuvanvṛdhe riśādasaḥ | ariṣṭebhiḥ pāyubhirviśvavedaso yantā no'vṛkaṃ chardiḥ ||

May the universal deities, possessors of all opulence, destroyers of foes, be (near) to Manu for hisprosperity; do you, who know all things, secure to us an abode safe from robbers through unassailableprotections.

आ नो अद्य समनसो गन्ता विश्वे सजोषसः । ऋचा गिरा मरुतो देव्यदिते सदने पस्त्ये महि ॥

ā no adya samanaso gantā viśve sajoṣasaḥ | ṛcā girā maruto devyadite sadane pastye mahi ||

Universal deities, united together and of one mind, come this day to us, (attracted) by the sacred praiseaddressed to you; and do you, Maruts, and the mighty goddess Aditi, (come) to the dwelling, (our) abode.

अभि प्रिया मरुतो या वो अश्व्या हव्या मित्र प्रयाथन । आ बर्हिरिन्द्रो वरुणस्तुरा नर आदित्यासः सदन्तु नः ॥

abhi priyā maruto yā vo aśvyā havyā mitra prayāthana | ā barhirindro varuṇasturā nara ādityāsaḥ sadantu naḥ ||

Direct, Maruts, your beloved horses (to our rite); Mitra, (come to our) oblations; and may Indra, andVaruṇa, and the swift leaders, the Ādityas, sit down on our sacred grass.

वयं वो वृक्तबर्हिषो हितप्रयस आनुषक् । सुतसोमासो वरुण हवामहे मनुष्वदिद्धाग्नयः ॥

vayaṃ vo vṛktabarhiṣo hitaprayasa ānuṣak | sutasomāso varuṇa havāmahe manuṣvadiddhāgnayaḥ ||

Bearing the clipped sacred grass, offering in due order the (sacrificial) food, presenting the effusedSoma, and having the fires kindled, we invoke you, Varuṇa, (and the rest), as did Manus.

आ प्र यात मरुतो विष्णो अश्विना पूषन्माकीनया धिया । इन्द्र आ यातु प्रथमः सनिष्युभिर्वृषा यो वृत्रहा गृणे ॥

ā pra yāta maruto viṣṇo aśvinā pūṣanmākīnayā dhiyā | indra ā yātu prathamaḥ saniṣyubhirvṛṣā yo vṛtrahā gṛṇe ||

Maruts, Viṣṇu, Aśvins, Pūṣan, come here (induced) by my praise; may Indra, the first (of the gods),also come, the showerer (of benefits), he who is praised by (his) worshippers as the slayer of Vṛtra.

वि नो देवासो अद्रुहोऽच्छिद्रं शर्म यच्छत । न यद्दूराद्वसवो नू चिदन्तितो वरूथमादधर्षति ॥

vi no devāso adruho'cchidraṃ śarma yacchata | na yaddūrādvasavo nū cidantito varūthamādadharṣati ||

Unoppressive deities, bestow upon us a mansion without defect, so that, subduers (of foes), no onemay injure our defences, whether from afar or near.

अस्ति हि वः सजात्यं रिशादसो देवासो अस्त्याप्यम् । प्र णः पूर्वस्मै सुविताय वोचत मक्षू सुम्नाय नव्यसे ॥

asti hi vaḥ sajātyaṃ riśādaso devāso astyāpyam | pra ṇaḥ pūrvasmai suvitāya vocata makṣū sumnāya navyase ||

There is identity of race among you, deities, destroyers of foes; there is kindred (with me yourworshipper); therefore, utter at once the command for our former prosperity and for new happiness.

इदा हि व उपस्तुतिमिदा वामस्य भक्तये । उप वो विश्ववेदसो नमस्युराँ असृक्ष्यन्यामिव ॥

idā hi va upastutimidā vāmasya bhaktaye | upa vo viśvavedaso namasyurā~ asṛkṣyanyāmiva ||

Deities, possessed of all wealth, I, desirous of offering worship, address to you verily unprecedentedpraise, for the sake of obtaining desired affluence.

उदु ष्य वः सविता सुप्रणीतयोऽस्थादूर्ध्वो वरेण्यः । नि द्विपादश्चतुष्पादो अर्थिनोऽविश्रन्पतयिष्णवः ॥

udu ṣya vaḥ savitā supraṇītayo'sthādūrdhvo vareṇyaḥ | ni dvipādaścatuṣpādo arthino'viśranpatayiṣṇavaḥ ||

Devoutly praised (Maruts), when the adorable Savitā has risen above you, then bipeds andquadrupeds, and the flying birds, seeking (their objects), enter (upon their functions).

देवंदेवं वोऽवसे देवंदेवमभिष्टये । देवंदेवं हुवेम वाजसातये गृणन्तो देव्या धिया ॥

devaṃdevaṃ vo'vase devaṃdevamabhiṣṭaye | devaṃdevaṃ huvema vājasātaye gṛṇanto devyā dhiyā ||

We would invoke each deity among you (gods) for protection, each deity for the attainment of ourdesires, each deity for the acquisition of food, glorifying you with divine praise.

देवासो हि ष्मा मनवे समन्यवो विश्वे साकं सरातयः । ते नो अद्य ते अपरं तुचे तु नो भवन्तु वरिवोविदः ॥

devāso hi ṣmā manave samanyavo viśve sākaṃ sarātayaḥ | te no adya te aparaṃ tuce tu no bhavantu varivovidaḥ ||

May the universal gods with one consent be together the givers (of riches) to Manu; may they, bothtoday and hereafter, be the bestowers of wealth upon us and upon our posterity.

प्र वः शंसाम्यद्रुहः संस्थ उपस्तुतीनाम् । न तं धूर्तिर्वरुण मित्र मर्त्यं यो वो धामभ्योऽविधत् ॥

pra vaḥ śaṃsāmyadruhaḥ saṃstha upastutīnām | na taṃ dhūrtirvaruṇa mitra martyaṃ yo vo dhāmabhyo'vidhat ||

I glorify you, inoxious deities, in the plural ce of praises; no harm befalls the man who, Mitra and Varuṇa,offers (oblations) to your glories.

प्र स क्षयं तिरते वि महीरिषो यो वो वराय दाशति । प्र प्रजाभिर्जायते धर्मणस्पर्यरिष्टः सर्व एधते ॥

pra sa kṣayaṃ tirate vi mahīriṣo yo vo varāya dāśati | pra prajābhirjāyate dharmaṇasparyariṣṭaḥ sarva edhate ||

He enlarges his dweling, he has abundant food who offers you (oblations) to obtain a blessing; throughhis pious acts he is born on every side in his children; all prosper (through your favour) unharmed (by enemies).

ऋते स विन्दते युधः सुगेभिर्यात्यध्वनः । अर्यमा मित्रो वरुणः सरातयो यं त्रायन्ते सजोषसः ॥

ṛte sa vindate yudhaḥ sugebhiryātyadhvanaḥ | aryamā mitro varuṇaḥ sarātayo yaṃ trāyante sajoṣasaḥ ||

He gains (wealth) without war, he travels along the roads with quick (horses), whom Aryaman, Mitraand Varuṇa, alike munificent, and acting in concert, protect.

अज्रे चिदस्मै कृणुथा न्यञ्चनं दुर्गे चिदा सुसरणम् । एषा चिदस्मादशनिः परो नु सास्रेधन्ती वि नश्यतु ॥

ajre cidasmai kṛṇuthā nyañcanaṃ durge cidā susaraṇam | eṣā cidasmādaśaniḥ paro nu sāsredhantī vi naśyatu ||

You enable him (Manu) to proceed by an unobstructed road; you grant him easy access to difficultpasses; may the weapon (of the foe) be far from him, and, inflicting no injury, perish.

यदद्य सूर्य उद्यति प्रियक्षत्रा ऋतं दध । यन्निम्रुचि प्रबुधि विश्ववेदसो यद्वा मध्यंदिने दिवः ॥

yadadya sūrya udyati priyakṣatrā ṛtaṃ dadha | yannimruci prabudhi viśvavedaso yadvā madhyaṃdine divaḥ ||

Divinities of benevolent vigour, since you preside over the rite today, at the rising of the sun, since,possessors of all wealth, (you are present) at his setting, or at his waking, or at the meridian of the day.

यद्वाभिपित्वे असुरा ऋतं यते छर्दिर्येम वि दाशुषे । वयं तद्वो वसवो विश्ववेदस उप स्थेयाम मध्य आ ॥

yadvābhipitve asurā ṛtaṃ yate chardiryema vi dāśuṣe | vayaṃ tadvo vasavo viśvavedasa upa stheyāma madhya ā ||

Or since all-wise deities, you accept the sacrifice, bestowing on the zealous donor (of the oblation) aswelling (such as we may worship in) then, possessors of all wealth, distributors of riches, may we worshp you inthe midst (of that dwelling).

यदद्य सूर उदिते यन्मध्यंदिन आतुचि । वामं धत्थ मनवे विश्ववेदसो जुह्वानाय प्रचेतसे ॥

yadadya sūra udite yanmadhyaṃdina ātuci | vāmaṃ dhattha manave viśvavedaso juhvānāya pracetase ||

(Gods), who are possessed of all wealth, bestow the desired (opulence) upon the intelligent Manu,offering oblations to you at sunrise, mid-day and sunset.

वयं तद्वः सम्राज आ वृणीमहे पुत्रो न बहुपाय्यम् । अश्याम तदादित्या जुह्वतो हविर्येन वस्योऽनशामहै ॥

vayaṃ tadvaḥ samrāja ā vṛṇīmahe putro na bahupāyyam | aśyāma tadādityā juhvato haviryena vasyo'naśāmahai ||

We solicit of you, resplendent deities, as a son (of a father), that which is to be enjoyed by many;offering oblations, may we obtain that (wealth), Ādityas, by which we may possess abundance.
