[rv-8-25] • 24 श्लोकाः

ता वां विश्वस्य गोपा देवा देवेषु यज्ञिया । ऋतावाना यजसे पूतदक्षसा ॥

tā vāṃ viśvasya gopā devā deveṣu yajñiyā | ṛtāvānā yajase pūtadakṣasā ||

You two are the protectors of the universe, divine and to be adored among the gods; therefore,(Viśvamanas), you sacrifice to the pair who are observant of truth and endowed with real power.

मित्रा तना न रथ्या वरुणो यश्च सुक्रतुः । सनात्सुजाता तनया धृतव्रता ॥

mitrā tanā na rathyā varuṇo yaśca sukratuḥ | sanātsujātā tanayā dhṛtavratā ||

Mitra and Varuṇa, doers of good deeds, (diffusers of) riches, who are the charioteers (of men),well-born of old, the sons, (of Aditi), observant of vows, (you are worshipped by me).

ता माता विश्ववेदसासुर्याय प्रमहसा । मही जजानादितिॠतावरी ॥

tā mātā viśvavedasāsuryāya pramahasā | mahī jajānāditiṝtāvarī ||

The great and truthful Aditi, the mother (of the gods), gave birth to those two who are possessed of allaffluence, and shining with great splendour, for the (destruction of the) asuras.

महान्ता मित्रावरुणा सम्राजा देवावसुरा । ऋतावानावृतमा घोषतो बृहत् ॥

mahāntā mitrāvaruṇā samrājā devāvasurā | ṛtāvānāvṛtamā ghoṣato bṛhat ||

The great Mitra and Varuṇa, the two sovereign and powerful deities, the observers of truth, illumine oursolemn rite.

नपाता शवसो महः सूनू दक्षस्य सुक्रतू । सृप्रदानू इषो वास्त्वधि क्षितः ॥

napātā śavaso mahaḥ sūnū dakṣasya sukratū | sṛpradānū iṣo vāstvadhi kṣitaḥ ||

Grandson sof mighty strength, son sof energy, doers of good deeds, liberal benefactors, they presideover the habitation of food.

सं या दानूनि येमथुर्दिव्याः पार्थिवीरिषः । नभस्वतीरा वां चरन्तु वृष्टयः ॥

saṃ yā dānūni yemathurdivyāḥ pārthivīriṣaḥ | nabhasvatīrā vāṃ carantu vṛṣṭayaḥ ||

Bestow (upon us) good gifts, viands, whether of heaven or earth; may the water-shedding rains attendupon you.

अधि या बृहतो दिवोऽभि यूथेव पश्यतः । ऋतावाना सम्राजा नमसे हिता ॥

adhi yā bṛhato divo'bhi yūtheva paśyataḥ | ṛtāvānā samrājā namase hitā ||

(These are they) who look upon the great deities as (a bull contemplates) the herd, sovereignsobservant of truth and propitious to adoration.

ऋतावाना नि षेदतुः साम्राज्याय सुक्रतू । धृतव्रता क्षत्रिया क्षत्रमाशतुः ॥

ṛtāvānā ni ṣedatuḥ sāmrājyāya sukratū | dhṛtavratā kṣatriyā kṣatramāśatuḥ ||

Observers of truth, doers of good deeds, they sit down for the office of sovereignty; observant ofobligations, endowed with strength, they acquire vigour.

अक्ष्णश्चिद्गातुवित्तरानुल्बणेन चक्षसा । नि चिन्मिषन्ता निचिरा नि चिक्यतुः ॥

akṣṇaścidgātuvittarānulbaṇena cakṣasā | ni cinmiṣantā nicirā ni cikyatuḥ ||

Through knowers of the path, even before the eye (can see), causing (alll beings) to open their eyelids,existing from of old, and shining with a mild radiance, verily they have been worshipped.

उत नो देव्यदितिरुरुष्यतां नासत्या । उरुष्यन्तु मरुतो वृद्धशवसः ॥

uta no devyaditiruruṣyatāṃ nāsatyā | uruṣyantu maruto vṛddhaśavasaḥ ||

May the divine Aditi, may the Nāsatyās also protect us; may the rapid Maruts defend us.

ते नो नावमुरुष्यत दिवा नक्तं सुदानवः । अरिष्यन्तो नि पायुभिः सचेमहि ॥

te no nāvamuruṣyata divā naktaṃ sudānavaḥ | ariṣyanto ni pāyubhiḥ sacemahi ||

Munificent and irresistible (Maruts), guard our vessel by day and night, so that we may be securethrough your protection.

अघ्नते विष्णवे वयमरिष्यन्तः सुदानवे । श्रुधि स्वयावन्त्सिन्धो पूर्वचित्तये ॥

aghnate viṣṇave vayamariṣyantaḥ sudānave | śrudhi svayāvantsindho pūrvacittaye ||

We, injured (through his protection, offer praise) to the liberal Viṣṇu, who harms not (his adorers); doyou who goes by thyself alone (to combat), and cause wealth to flow (to the worshipper), hear (our prayer) inbehalf of him who has commenced the sacrifice.

तद्वार्यं वृणीमहे वरिष्ठं गोपयत्यम् । मित्रो यत्पान्ति वरुणो यदर्यमा ॥

tadvāryaṃ vṛṇīmahe variṣṭhaṃ gopayatyam | mitro yatpānti varuṇo yadaryamā ||

We solicit that ample, all-desired, all-guarding (wealth) which Mitra, Varuṇa and Aryaman hold undertheir protection.

उत नः सिन्धुरपां तन्मरुतस्तदश्विना । इन्द्रो विष्णुर्मीढ्वांसः सजोषसः ॥

uta naḥ sindhurapāṃ tanmarutastadaśvinā | indro viṣṇurmīḍhvāṃsaḥ sajoṣasaḥ ||

Yes, may he who causes the waters to flow (Parjanya), the Maruts, the Aśvins, Indra, Viṣṇu, may all(these deities) together, the showerers (of benefits, protect) that wealth for us.

ते हि ष्मा वनुषो नरोऽभिमातिं कयस्य चित् । तिग्मं न क्षोदः प्रतिघ्नन्ति भूर्णयः ॥

te hi ṣmā vanuṣo naro'bhimātiṃ kayasya cit | tigmaṃ na kṣodaḥ pratighnanti bhūrṇayaḥ ||

Those desirable leaders (of men), rapid in movement, break down the haughtiness of any (foe)whatever, as an impetuous current (sweeps away all obstacles).

अयमेक इत्था पुरूरु चष्टे वि विश्पतिः । तस्य व्रतान्यनु वश्चरामसि ॥

ayameka itthā purūru caṣṭe vi viśpatiḥ | tasya vratānyanu vaścarāmasi ||

This one, the lord of man (Mitra), contemplates many vast things; we follow his rites for you.

अनु पूर्वाण्योक्या साम्राज्यस्य सश्चिम । मित्रस्य व्रता वरुणस्य दीर्घश्रुत् ॥

anu pūrvāṇyokyā sāmrājyasya saścima | mitrasya vratā varuṇasya dīrghaśrut ||

We observe the ancient rites of the imperial Varuṇa and the renowned Mitra, (rites) that are good for(our) dwelling.

परि यो रश्मिना दिवोऽन्तान्ममे पृथिव्याः । उभे आ पप्रौ रोदसी महित्वा ॥

pari yo raśminā divo'ntānmame pṛthivyāḥ | ubhe ā paprau rodasī mahitvā ||

(Mitra is he) who has measured with his rays the limits of both heaven and earth; who has filled bothheaven and earth with his greatness.

उदु ष्य शरणे दिवो ज्योतिरयंस्त सूर्यः । अग्निर्न शुक्रः समिधान आहुतः ॥

udu ṣya śaraṇe divo jyotirayaṃsta sūryaḥ | agnirna śukraḥ samidhāna āhutaḥ ||

He, Sūrya, has uplifted his radiance in the region of the heaven; kindled and invoked withburnt-offerings, he is bright, like Agni.

वचो दीर्घप्रसद्मनीशे वाजस्य गोमतः । ईशे हि पित्वोऽविषस्य दावने ॥

vaco dīrghaprasadmanīśe vājasya gomataḥ | īśe hi pitvo'viṣasya dāvane ||

Raise your voice in the spacious hall of sacrifice (to him) who is lord over food derived from cattle, whois able to grant nutritious sustenance.

तत्सूर्यं रोदसी उभे दोषा वस्तोरुप ब्रुवे । भोजेष्वस्माँ अभ्युच्चरा सदा ॥

tatsūryaṃ rodasī ubhe doṣā vastorupa bruve | bhojeṣvasmā~ abhyuccarā sadā ||

I glorify by night and day that sun (Mitra and Varuṇa) and both the heaven and earth; do you (Varuṇa)ever bring us to the presence of the bountiful.

ऋज्रमुक्षण्यायने रजतं हरयाणे । रथं युक्तमसनाम सुषामणि ॥

ṛjramukṣaṇyāyane rajataṃ harayāṇe | rathaṃ yuktamasanāma suṣāmaṇi ||

We have received from the son of Suṣāman, the descendant of Ukṣan, the overcomer (of foes), awell-going chariot of silver, yoked (with a pair of horses).

ता मे अश्व्यानां हरीणां नितोशना । उतो नु कृत्व्यानां नृवाहसा ॥

tā me aśvyānāṃ harīṇāṃ nitośanā | uto nu kṛtvyānāṃ nṛvāhasā ||

Among bay horses these two are pre-eminently the destroyers (of foes), and of those eager in combat;the two strong bearers of men.

स्मदभीशू कशावन्ता विप्रा नविष्ठया मती । महो वाजिनावर्वन्ता सचासनम् ॥

smadabhīśū kaśāvantā viprā naviṣṭhayā matī | maho vājināvarvantā sacāsanam ||

Through this new praise (of Mitra and Varuṇa) I have obtained at the same moment of the mightyprince, two fast-going sagacious steeds, with whip and reins.
