[rv-8-24] • 30 श्लोकाः

सखाय आ शिषामहि ब्रह्मेन्द्राय वज्रिणे । स्तुष ऊ षु वो नृतमाय धृष्णवे ॥

sakhāya ā śiṣāmahi brahmendrāya vajriṇe | stuṣa ū ṣu vo nṛtamāya dhṛṣṇave ||

Let us earnestly, friends, address our prayer to Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, for you I praise thechief leader (in battles), the resolute (opposer of foes).

शवसा ह्यसि श्रुतो वृत्रहत्येन वृत्रहा । मघैर्मघोनो अति शूर दाशसि ॥

śavasā hyasi śruto vṛtrahatyena vṛtrahā | maghairmaghono ati śūra dāśasi ||

You are renowned for strength; from the slaying of Vṛtra, you are (famed as) Vṛtrahan; you surpass,hero, the opulent in the donation of your riches.

स नः स्तवान आ भर रयिं चित्रश्रवस्तमम् । निरेके चिद्यो हरिवो वसुर्ददिः ॥

sa naḥ stavāna ā bhara rayiṃ citraśravastamam | nireke cidyo harivo vasurdadiḥ ||

Praised by us, bestow upon us riches of wonderful variety; you, the lord of steeds, who, at the issue (ofyour weapons) put your enemies to flight, are the donor (of treasures).

आ निरेकमुत प्रियमिन्द्र दर्षि जनानाम् । धृषता धृष्णो स्तवमान आ भर ॥

ā nirekamuta priyamindra darṣi janānām | dhṛṣatā dhṛṣṇo stavamāna ā bhara ||

Burst open to your worshippers, Indra, the highly prized wealth; glorified by us, do you who areendowed with resolution, bring (us wealth) with a resolute (mind).

न ते सव्यं न दक्षिणं हस्तं वरन्त आमुरः । न परिबाधो हरिवो गविष्टिषु ॥

na te savyaṃ na dakṣiṇaṃ hastaṃ varanta āmuraḥ | na paribādho harivo gaviṣṭiṣu ||

Lord of steeds, in the recovery of the cattle the opponents resist not your left hand nor your right, yourenemies (resist you) not.

आ त्वा गोभिरिव व्रजं गीर्भिॠणोम्यद्रिवः । आ स्मा कामं जरितुरा मनः पृण ॥

ā tvā gobhiriva vrajaṃ gīrbhiṝṇomyadrivaḥ | ā smā kāmaṃ jariturā manaḥ pṛṇa ||

I approach you, thunderer, with praises, as (a cowherd goes) with cattle to the pasture; gratify thedesire, satisfy the mind of your adorer.

विश्वानि विश्वमनसो धिया नो वृत्रहन्तम । उग्र प्रणेतरधि षू वसो गहि ॥

viśvāni viśvamanaso dhiyā no vṛtrahantama | ugra praṇetaradhi ṣū vaso gahi ||

Fierce destroyer of Vṛtra, bringer (of wealth to your worshippers), subduer of enemies, preside over all(the offerings) of us, Visvamanasa, with a (favourable) mind.

वयं ते अस्य वृत्रहन्विद्याम शूर नव्यसः । वसोः स्पार्हस्य पुरुहूत राधसः ॥

vayaṃ te asya vṛtrahanvidyāma śūra navyasaḥ | vasoḥ spārhasya puruhūta rādhasaḥ ||

May we, hero, slayer of Vṛtra, invoked of many become possessed of this your new, desirable, andhappiness producing wealth.

इन्द्र यथा ह्यस्ति तेऽपरीतं नृतो शवः । अमृक्ता रातिः पुरुहूत दाशुषे ॥

indra yathā hyasti te'parītaṃ nṛto śavaḥ | amṛktā rātiḥ puruhūta dāśuṣe ||

As, Indra, inspirer (of men), your strength is irresistible, (so) invoked of many, your munificence to thedonor (of oblations) cannot be marred.

आ वृषस्व महामह महे नृतम राधसे । दृऴ्हश्चिद्दृह्य मघवन्मघत्तये ॥

ā vṛṣasva mahāmaha mahe nṛtama rādhase | dṛḻhaściddṛhya maghavanmaghattaye ||

Most adorable, chief leader (of men), invigorate (yourself with the Soma) for (the conquest of) greatwealth; consume, Maghavan, the strong (cities of the asuras) for the rich spoil.

नू अन्यत्रा चिदद्रिवस्त्वन्नो जग्मुराशसः । मघवञ्छग्धि तव तन्न ऊतिभिः ॥

nū anyatrā cidadrivastvanno jagmurāśasaḥ | maghavañchagdhi tava tanna ūtibhiḥ ||

Wielder of the thunderbolt, our solicitations have been formerly addressed to other gods, than you; giveus, Maghavan, of your (spoil and guard it) for us with (your) protections.

नह्यङ्ग नृतो त्वदन्यं विन्दामि राधसे । राये द्युम्नाय शवसे च गिर्वणः ॥

nahyaṅga nṛto tvadanyaṃ vindāmi rādhase | rāye dyumnāya śavase ca girvaṇaḥ ||

Verily, impeller (of men), who are to be worshipped by praise, I apply to no other than you forsustenance, riches, reputation, and strength.

एन्दुमिन्द्राय सिञ्चत पिबाति सोम्यं मधु । प्र राधसा चोदयाते महित्वना ॥

endumindrāya siñcata pibāti somyaṃ madhu | pra rādhasā codayāte mahitvanā ||

Effuse the Soma for Indra, let him quaff the Soma; he by his might rewards (the donor) with wealth.

उपो हरीणां पतिं दक्षं पृञ्चन्तमब्रवम् । नूनं श्रुधि स्तुवतो अश्व्यस्य ॥

upo harīṇāṃ patiṃ dakṣaṃ pṛñcantamabravam | nūnaṃ śrudhi stuvato aśvyasya ||

Let me address the lord of steeds, who associates his strength (with the Maruts); now hear the words ofthe son of Vyaśva praising you.

नह्यङ्ग पुरा चन जज्ञे वीरतरस्त्वत् । नकी राया नैवथा न भन्दना ॥

nahyaṅga purā cana jajñe vīratarastvat | nakī rāyā naivathā na bhandanā ||

No one, Indra, has ever been born more mighty than you, no one (surpassing you) in riches; no one(more powerful) in protection; no one (more entitled) to praise.

एदु मध्वो मदिन्तरं सिञ्च वाध्वर्यो अन्धसः । एवा हि वीरः स्तवते सदावृधः ॥

edu madhvo madintaraṃ siñca vādhvaryo andhasaḥ | evā hi vīraḥ stavate sadāvṛdhaḥ ||

Pour out, priest, the most exhilarating (draught) of the sweet (sacrificial) Soma, for he, the ever-mightyhero, alone is praised.

इन्द्र स्थातर्हरीणां नकिष्टे पूर्व्यस्तुतिम् । उदानंश शवसा न भन्दना ॥

indra sthātarharīṇāṃ nakiṣṭe pūrvyastutim | udānaṃśa śavasā na bhandanā ||

Indra, ruler of horses, no one surpasses your ancient praise, either for force or for fame.

तं वो वाजानां पतिमहूमहि श्रवस्यवः । अप्रायुभिर्यज्ञेभिर्वावृधेन्यम् ॥

taṃ vo vājānāṃ patimahūmahi śravasyavaḥ | aprāyubhiryajñebhirvāvṛdhenyam ||

Desirous of food, we invoke your lord of viands, who is to be magnified by sacrifices (offered) byattentive (worshipers).

एतो न्विन्द्रं स्तवाम सखायः स्तोम्यं नरम् । कृष्टीर्यो विश्वा अभ्यस्त्येक इत् ॥

eto nvindraṃ stavāma sakhāyaḥ stomyaṃ naram | kṛṣṭīryo viśvā abhyastyeka it ||

Come, freinds, let us glorify Indra, the leader, who is entitled to praise, who, single, overcomes allhostile hosts.

अगोरुधाय गविषे द्युक्षाय दस्म्यं वचः । घृतात्स्वादीयो मधुनश्च वोचत ॥

agorudhāya gaviṣe dyukṣāya dasmyaṃ vacaḥ | ghṛtātsvādīyo madhunaśca vocata ||

Recite agreeable words, sweeter than clarified butter, or than Soma, to the illustrious (Indra), who isgratified by eulogy, who rejects not praise.

यस्यामितानि वीर्या न राधः पर्येतवे । ज्योतिर्न विश्वमभ्यस्ति दक्षिणा ॥

yasyāmitāni vīryā na rādhaḥ paryetave | jyotirna viśvamabhyasti dakṣiṇā ||

Whose energies are unbounded, whose wealth cannot be carried away, whose bounty extends like thefirmament over all.

स्तुहीन्द्रं व्यश्ववदनूर्मिं वाजिनं यमम् । अर्यो गयं मंहमानं वि दाशुषे ॥

stuhīndraṃ vyaśvavadanūrmiṃ vājinaṃ yamam | aryo gayaṃ maṃhamānaṃ vi dāśuṣe ||

Glorify Indra, the unassailable, the powerful, the regulator (of man), as was done by Vyaśva, he, thelord, gives a spacious dwelling to the donor (of the oblation).

एवा नूनमुप स्तुहि वैयश्व दशमं नवम् । सुविद्वांसं चर्कृत्यं चरणीनाम् ॥

evā nūnamupa stuhi vaiyaśva daśamaṃ navam | suvidvāṃsaṃ carkṛtyaṃ caraṇīnām ||

Praise verily at present, son of Vyaśva, praise (Indra), who is the tenth of the pervading (vitalprinciples), the adorable, the all-wise to be honoured repeatedly (by sacred rites).

वेत्था हि निॠतीनां वज्रहस्त परिवृजम् । अहरहः शुन्ध्युः परिपदामिव ॥

vetthā hi niṝtīnāṃ vajrahasta parivṛjam | aharahaḥ śundhyuḥ paripadāmiva ||

You are cognizant, wielder of the thunderbolt, of the departure of evil beings, as the purifying sun dayby day (is of that) of the birds flying in all directions (from their roost).

तदिन्द्राव आ भर येना दंसिष्ठ कृत्वने । द्विता कुत्साय शिश्नथो नि चोदय ॥

tadindrāva ā bhara yenā daṃsiṣṭha kṛtvane | dvitā kutsāya śiśnatho ni codaya ||

Indra, of goodly aspect, bring to the offerer (of the oblation) that (protection) wherewith to defend himyou have twice slain (the goe) for Kutsa; show the same (care of us).

तमु त्वा नूनमीमहे नव्यं दंसिष्ठ सन्यसे । स त्वं नो विश्वा अभिमातीः सक्षणिः ॥

tamu tvā nūnamīmahe navyaṃ daṃsiṣṭha sanyase | sa tvaṃ no viśvā abhimātīḥ sakṣaṇiḥ ||

(Indra) of goodly aspect, we implore you who are entitled to praise, for (our) preservation; for you arethe overcomer of all our adversaries.

य ऋक्षादंहसो मुचद्यो वार्यात्सप्त सिन्धुषु । वधर्दासस्य तुविनृम्ण नीनमः ॥

ya ṛkṣādaṃhaso mucadyo vāryātsapta sindhuṣu | vadhardāsasya tuvinṛmṇa nīnamaḥ ||

(He it is) who rescues men from the wickedness of evil beings, who enriches (the dwellers) on theseven rivers; now hurl, you who abound in wealth, your weapon at the Dāsa.

यथा वरो सुषाम्णे सनिभ्य आवहो रयिम् । व्यश्वेभ्यः सुभगे वाजिनीवति ॥

yathā varo suṣāmṇe sanibhya āvaho rayim | vyaśvebhyaḥ subhage vājinīvati ||

As you, Varu, have distributed vast wealth to those who have solicited (riches) on behalf of Susāman,(so do you now distribute) to the descendants of Vyaśva; (and so too you), auspicious food-bestowing (Uṣas).

आ नार्यस्य दक्षिणा व्यश्वाँ एतु सोमिनः । स्थूरं च राधः शतवत्सहस्रवत् ॥

ā nāryasya dakṣiṇā vyaśvā~ etu sominaḥ | sthūraṃ ca rādhaḥ śatavatsahasravat ||

May the gifts of a humane (price), when offering the Soma libation, extend to the Vyaśvas, yes, andsubstantial wealthy by hundreds and thousands.

यत्त्वा पृच्छादीजानः कुहया कुहयाकृते । एषो अपश्रितो वलो गोमतीमव तिष्ठति ॥

yattvā pṛcchādījānaḥ kuhayā kuhayākṛte | eṣo apaśrito valo gomatīmava tiṣṭhati ||

If any ask of you, (Uṣas), when anywhere present, where the sacrificer (Varu dwells), (reply) thepowerful (prince), the refuge of all, abides on (the banks of) the Gomatī river.
