[rv-8-20] • 26 श्लोकाः

आ गन्ता मा रिषण्यत प्रस्थावानो माप स्थाता समन्यवः । स्थिरा चिन्नमयिष्णवः ॥

ā gantā mā riṣaṇyata prasthāvāno māpa sthātā samanyavaḥ | sthirā cinnamayiṣṇavaḥ ||

Far-travellig (winds), alike wrathful, come here, harm us not; benders of the solid (mountains), withdrawnot from us.

वीऴुपविभिर्मरुत ऋभुक्षण आ रुद्रासः सुदीतिभिः । इषा नो अद्या गता पुरुस्पृहो यज्ञमा सोभरीयवः ॥

vīḻupavibhirmaruta ṛbhukṣaṇa ā rudrāsaḥ sudītibhiḥ | iṣā no adyā gatā puruspṛho yajñamā sobharīyavaḥ ||

Mighty sons of Rudra, Maruts, come with brilliant, strong-wheeled (chariots); desired of many,well-disposed to Sobhari, come today to our sacrifice with (abundant) food.

विद्मा हि रुद्रियाणां शुष्ममुग्रं मरुतां शिमीवताम् । विष्णोरेषस्य मीऴ्हुषाम् ॥

vidmā hi rudriyāṇāṃ śuṣmamugraṃ marutāṃ śimīvatām | viṣṇoreṣasya mīḻhuṣām ||

We know the great strength of the active sons of Rudra, the Maruts, the shedders of the diffusive raiṇ

वि द्वीपानि पापतन्तिष्ठद्दुच्छुनोभे युजन्त रोदसी । प्र धन्वान्यैरत शुभ्रखादयो यदेजथ स्वभानवः ॥

vi dvīpāni pāpatantiṣṭhadducchunobhe yujanta rodasī | pra dhanvānyairata śubhrakhādayo yadejatha svabhānavaḥ ||

They fall upon the island; the firm-set (trees) are with difficulty sustained; they agitate both heaven andearth; they urge on the waters; bright- weaponed, far-shining, whatever (you approach) you cause to tremble.

अच्युता चिद्वो अज्मन्ना नानदति पर्वतासो वनस्पतिः । भूमिर्यामेषु रेजते ॥

acyutā cidvo ajmannā nānadati parvatāso vanaspatiḥ | bhūmiryāmeṣu rejate ||

At your coming the unprecipitated mountains and trees resound; the earth shakes at your passage.

अमाय वो मरुतो यातवे द्यौर्जिहीत उत्तरा बृहत् । यत्रा नरो देदिशते तनूष्वा त्वक्षांसि बाह्वोजसः ॥

amāya vo maruto yātave dyaurjihīta uttarā bṛhat | yatrā naro dediśate tanūṣvā tvakṣāṃsi bāhvojasaḥ ||

(Alarmed) at your violence, Maruts, the heaven seeks to rise higher, abandoning the firmament, where(you) the strong-armed leaders (of rites) display the ornaments of (your) person ns.

स्वधामनु श्रियं नरो महि त्वेषा अमवन्तो वृषप्सवः । वहन्ते अह्रुतप्सवः ॥

svadhāmanu śriyaṃ naro mahi tveṣā amavanto vṛṣapsavaḥ | vahante ahrutapsavaḥ ||

The radiant, strong, rain-shedding, undisguised leaders of rites display their great glory when acceptingthe (sacrificial) food.

गोभिर्वाणो अज्यते सोभरीणां रथे कोशे हिरण्यये । गोबन्धवः सुजातास इषे भुजे महान्तो नः स्परसे नु ॥

gobhirvāṇo ajyate sobharīṇāṃ rathe kośe hiraṇyaye | gobandhavaḥ sujātāsa iṣe bhuje mahānto naḥ sparase nu ||

The voice (of the Maruts) blends with the songs of the Sobharis in the receptacle of their goldenchariot; may the mighty well-born Maruts, the offspring of the (bridled) cow, (be gracious) to us regard of food,enjoyment, and kindness.

प्रति वो वृषदञ्जयो वृष्णे शर्धाय मारुताय भरध्वम् । हव्या वृषप्रयाव्णे ॥

prati vo vṛṣadañjayo vṛṣṇe śardhāya mārutāya bharadhvam | havyā vṛṣaprayāvṇe ||

Sprinklers of the libation, present the offerings to the rain-bestowing swift-passing company of theMaruts.

वृषणश्वेन मरुतो वृषप्सुना रथेन वृषनाभिना । आ श्येनासो न पक्षिणो वृथा नरो हव्या नो वीतये गत ॥

vṛṣaṇaśvena maruto vṛṣapsunā rathena vṛṣanābhinā | ā śyenāso na pakṣiṇo vṛthā naro havyā no vītaye gata ||

Maruts, leaders (of rites), come like swift-flying birds in your rain- shedding, strong-horsed chariot,whose wheels bestow showers, to partake of our oblations.

समानमञ्ज्येषां वि भ्राजन्ते रुक्मासो अधि बाहुषु । दविद्युतत्यृष्टयः ॥

samānamañjyeṣāṃ vi bhrājante rukmāso adhi bāhuṣu | davidyutatyṛṣṭayaḥ ||

Their decoration is the same; gold (necklaces) shine (on their breasts), lances gleam upon theirshoulders.

त उग्रासो वृषण उग्रबाहवो नकिष्टनूषु येतिरे । स्थिरा धन्वान्यायुधा रथेषु वोऽनीकेष्वधि श्रियः ॥

ta ugrāso vṛṣaṇa ugrabāhavo nakiṣṭanūṣu yetire | sthirā dhanvānyāyudhā ratheṣu vo'nīkeṣvadhi śriyaḥ ||

Fierce, vigorous, strong-armed, they need not exert (the energy of their) person ns; bows and arrows areready in your chariots; the glory (of conquest) over (hostile) armies is yours.

येषामर्णो न सप्रथो नाम त्वेषं शश्वतामेकमिद्भुजे । वयो न पित्र्यं सहः ॥

yeṣāmarṇo na sapratho nāma tveṣaṃ śaśvatāmekamidbhuje | vayo na pitryaṃ sahaḥ ||

One illustrious name is given to them all, as widely diffused as water for the gratification (of theirworshippers), like invigoraing paternal food.

तान्वन्दस्व मरुतस्ताँ उप स्तुहि तेषां हि धुनीनाम् । अराणां न चरमस्तदेषां दाना मह्ना तदेषाम् ॥

tānvandasva marutastā~ upa stuhi teṣāṃ hi dhunīnām | arāṇāṃ na caramastadeṣāṃ dānā mahnā tadeṣām ||

Praise them, praise the Maruts, for we are (dependen) upon those agitators (of all things) as a menial isupon his lords; therefore are their donations (characterized) by munificence; such are their (gifts).

सुभगः स व ऊतिष्वास पूर्वासु मरुतो व्युष्टिषु । यो वा नूनमुतासति ॥

subhagaḥ sa va ūtiṣvāsa pūrvāsu maruto vyuṣṭiṣu | yo vā nūnamutāsati ||

Fortunate was he, Maruts, who, in former days, was secure in your protections, as is he who nowenjoys them.

यस्य वा यूयं प्रति वाजिनो नर आ हव्या वीतये गथ । अभि ष द्युम्नैरुत वाजसातिभिः सुम्ना वो धूतयो नशत् ॥

yasya vā yūyaṃ prati vājino nara ā havyā vītaye gatha | abhi ṣa dyumnairuta vājasātibhiḥ sumnā vo dhūtayo naśat ||

The sacrificer, to partake of whose oblations you approach, leaders of rites, enjoys, agitators of allthings, the felicity you bestow, together with abundant viands, and the gift of strength.

यथा रुद्रस्य सूनवो दिवो वशन्त्यसुरस्य वेधसः । युवानस्तथेदसत् ॥

yathā rudrasya sūnavo divo vaśantyasurasya vedhasaḥ | yuvānastathedasat ||

May this (our praise) take effect, so that the ever-youthful sons of Rudra, creators of the cloud,(coming) from heaven, may be plural ased with us.

ये चार्हन्ति मरुतः सुदानवः स्मन्मीऴ्हुषश्चरन्ति ये । अतश्चिदा न उप वस्यसा हृदा युवान आ ववृध्वम् ॥

ye cārhanti marutaḥ sudānavaḥ smanmīḻhuṣaścaranti ye | ataścidā na upa vasyasā hṛdā yuvāna ā vavṛdhvam ||

Youthful (Maruts), approaching us with benevolent hearts, grant prosperity to those liberal men whoworship you, who zealously propitiate you, the showerers of rain, with oblations.

यून ऊ षु नविष्ठया वृष्णः पावकाँ अभि सोभरे गिरा । गाय गा इव चर्कृषत् ॥

yūna ū ṣu naviṣṭhayā vṛṣṇaḥ pāvakā~ abhi sobhare girā | gāya gā iva carkṛṣat ||

Praise, Sobhari, (and attract here) by a new song the youthful purifying showerers, as (a plural ughman)repeatedly drags his oxen.

साहा ये सन्ति मुष्टिहेव हव्यो विश्वासु पृत्सु होतृषु । वृष्णश्चन्द्रान्न सुश्रवस्तमान्गिरा वन्दस्व मरुतो अह ॥

sāhā ye santi muṣṭiheva havyo viśvāsu pṛtsu hotṛṣu | vṛṣṇaścandrānna suśravastamāngirā vandasva maruto aha ||

Propitiate wiḥ praise he Maruts, the senders of rain, the givers of plural asure, the liberal bestowers offood; who are ever victorious in combats, and like a boxer who has been challenged over his challengerṣ

गावश्चिद्घा समन्यवः सजात्येन मरुतः सबन्धवः । रिहते ककुभो मिथः ॥

gāvaścidghā samanyavaḥ sajātyena marutaḥ sabandhavaḥ | rihate kakubho mithaḥ ||

Maruts, who are of like wrath, offspring of the maternal cow (Pṛśni), related by a common origin, theyseverally spread through the quarters of the horizon.

मर्तश्चिद्वो नृतवो रुक्मवक्षस उप भ्रातृत्वमायति । अधि नो गात मरुतः सदा हि व आपित्वमस्ति निध्रुवि ॥

martaścidvo nṛtavo rukmavakṣasa upa bhrātṛtvamāyati | adhi no gāta marutaḥ sadā hi va āpitvamasti nidhruvi ||

Maruts, dancing (through the air), decorated with golden breast-plural tes, the mortal (who worships you)attains your brotherhood; speak favourably to us, for your affinity is ever (made known) at the regulated(sacrifice).

मरुतो मारुतस्य न आ भेषजस्य वहता सुदानवः । यूयं सखायः सप्तयः ॥

maruto mārutasya na ā bheṣajasya vahatā sudānavaḥ | yūyaṃ sakhāyaḥ saptayaḥ ||

genitive rous fiends, Maruts, swift gliding (through the air), bring to us (the boon) of the medicaments thatbelong to your company.

याभिः सिन्धुमवथ याभिस्तूर्वथ याभिर्दशस्यथा क्रिविम् । मयो नो भूतोतिभिर्मयोभुवः शिवाभिरसचद्विषः ॥

yābhiḥ sindhumavatha yābhistūrvatha yābhirdaśasyathā krivim | mayo no bhūtotibhirmayobhuvaḥ śivābhirasacadviṣaḥ ||

With those auspicious protectionw with which you have guarded the ocean, with which you havedesroyed (your enemies), with which you provided the well (for Gotama), do you who are he sources ofhappiness, the unconquerable by your adversaries, bestow happiness upon uṣ]The unconquerable:asasacadviṣa = śatrurahitaḥ, destitute of enemies].

यत्सिन्धौ यदसिक्न्यां यत्समुद्रेषु मरुतः सुबर्हिषः । यत्पर्वतेषु भेषजम् ॥

yatsindhau yadasiknyāṃ yatsamudreṣu marutaḥ subarhiṣaḥ | yatparvateṣu bheṣajam ||

Whatever medicament there may be in the Sindhu, the Asikni, in the oceans, in the mountains, Maruts,who are gratified by sacrifice.

विश्वं पश्यन्तो बिभृथा तनूष्वा तेना नो अधि वोचत । क्षमा रपो मरुत आतुरस्य न इष्कर्ता विह्रुतं पुनः ॥

viśvaṃ paśyanto bibhṛthā tanūṣvā tenā no adhi vocata | kṣamā rapo maruta āturasya na iṣkartā vihrutaṃ punaḥ ||

Do you, beholding every sort, collect them for (the good of) our bodies, ad instrumental uct us in their (uses); letthe cure of sickness (be the portion), Maruts, of him among us who for his wickedness is sick; re-establish hisenfeebled (frame).
