[rv-8-21] • 18 श्लोकाः

वयमु त्वामपूर्व्य स्थूरं न कच्चिद्भरन्तोऽवस्यवः । वाजे चित्रं हवामहे ॥

vayamu tvāmapūrvya sthūraṃ na kaccidbharanto'vasyavaḥ | vāje citraṃ havāmahe ||

Unpreceded Indra, cherishing you (with sacrificial food), desirous of your protection, we invoke you whoare manifold in battle, as (men call upon) some stout (person n for help).

उप त्वा कर्मन्नूतये स नो युवोग्रश्चक्राम यो धृषत् । त्वामिद्ध्यवितारं ववृमहे सखाय इन्द्र सानसिम् ॥

upa tvā karmannūtaye sa no yuvograścakrāma yo dhṛṣat | tvāmiddhyavitāraṃ vavṛmahe sakhāya indra sānasim ||

We have recourse, Indra, to you for protection at sacred rites; may he who is ever young, fierce,resolute, come to us! We, your friends, Indra, rely upon you as our protector and benefactor.

आ याहीम इन्दवोऽश्वपते गोपत उर्वरापते । सोमं सोमपते पिब ॥

ā yāhīma indavo'śvapate gopata urvarāpate | somaṃ somapate piba ||

Lord of horses, of cattle, of corn-land, these libations (are for you); come, lord of the Soma, drink theeffused Soma.

वयं हि त्वा बन्धुमन्तमबन्धवो विप्रास इन्द्र येमिम । या ते धामानि वृषभ तेभिरा गहि विश्वेभिः सोमपीतये ॥

vayaṃ hi tvā bandhumantamabandhavo viprāsa indra yemima | yā te dhāmāni vṛṣabha tebhirā gahi viśvebhiḥ somapītaye ||

Intelligent, but destitute of kin, let us connect ourselves, Indra, with you, who abound with kinsmen;come, showerer (of benefits), with all your glories, to drink the Soma.

सीदन्तस्ते वयो यथा गोश्रीते मधौ मदिरे विवक्षणे । अभि त्वामिन्द्र नोनुमः ॥

sīdantaste vayo yathā gośrīte madhau madire vivakṣaṇe | abhi tvāmindra nonumaḥ ||

Gathering like (a flock of) birds round your exhilarating heaven- bestowing Soma mixed with curds, werepeatedly glorify you, Indra.

अच्छा च त्वैना नमसा वदामसि किं मुहुश्चिद्वि दीधयः । सन्ति कामासो हरिवो ददिष्ट्वं स्मो वयं सन्ति नो धियः ॥

acchā ca tvainā namasā vadāmasi kiṃ muhuścidvi dīdhayaḥ | santi kāmāso harivo dadiṣṭvaṃ smo vayaṃ santi no dhiyaḥ ||

We salute you with this adoration; why do you so often mediate (upon our requests)? Master of baysteeds, let our desires be granted. You are their bestower, we are your (suppliants) and our sacred rites are(addressed to you).

नूत्ना इदिन्द्र ते वयमूती अभूम नहि नू ते अद्रिवः । विद्मा पुरा परीणसः ॥

nūtnā idindra te vayamūtī abhūma nahi nū te adrivaḥ | vidmā purā parīṇasaḥ ||

We verily are the most recent (objects) of your protection, Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, we have notknown of old one greater than you.

विद्मा सखित्वमुत शूर भोज्यमा ते ता वज्रिन्नीमहे । उतो समस्मिन्ना शिशीहि नो वसो वाजे सुशिप्र गोमति ॥

vidmā sakhitvamuta śūra bhojyamā te tā vajrinnīmahe | uto samasminnā śiśīhi no vaso vāje suśipra gomati ||

We acknowledge, hero, your friendship, (the wealth) to be enjoyed through you, and solicit both,thunderer, of you; giver of dwellings, Indra of the handsome jaws, sustain us in all abundance and in (store of)cattle.

यो न इदमिदं पुरा प्र वस्य आनिनाय तमु वः स्तुषे । सखाय इन्द्रमूतये ॥

yo na idamidaṃ purā pra vasya ānināya tamu vaḥ stuṣe | sakhāya indramūtaye ||

I glorify friends, for your protection, that Indra who has brought to us of old this or that excellent(wealth).

हर्यश्वं सत्पतिं चर्षणीसहं स हि ष्मा यो अमन्दत । आ तु नः स वयति गव्यमश्व्यं स्तोतृभ्यो मघवा शतम् ॥

haryaśvaṃ satpatiṃ carṣaṇīsahaṃ sa hi ṣmā yo amandata | ā tu naḥ sa vayati gavyamaśvyaṃ stotṛbhyo maghavā śatam ||

That man glorifies Indra, the lord of bay steeds, the protector of the good, the overcomer of enemies,who rejoices (in the fulfilment of his wishes); may Maghavan bestow upon us, his worshippers, hundreds of cattleand horses.

त्वया ह स्विद्युजा वयं प्रति श्वसन्तं वृषभ ब्रुवीमहि । संस्थे जनस्य गोमतः ॥

tvayā ha svidyujā vayaṃ prati śvasantaṃ vṛṣabha bruvīmahi | saṃsthe janasya gomataḥ ||

With you, showerer (of benefits), for our ally, we bid defiance to one assailing us in a contest (onbehalf) of a man possessing herds of cattle.

जयेम कारे पुरुहूत कारिणोऽभि तिष्ठेम दूढ्यः । नृभिर्वृत्रं हन्याम शूशुयाम चावेरिन्द्र प्र णो धियः ॥

jayema kāre puruhūta kāriṇo'bhi tiṣṭhema dūḍhyaḥ | nṛbhirvṛtraṃ hanyāma śūśuyāma cāverindra pra ṇo dhiyaḥ ||

Indra, invoked of many, may we conquer in battle those contending against us; may we resist themalignant; may we, aided by the leaders (of rites, the Maruts), slay Vṛtra; may we be prosperous, and do youprotect our pious works.

अभ्रातृव्यो अना त्वमनापिरिन्द्र जनुषा सनादसि । युधेदापित्वमिच्छसे ॥

abhrātṛvyo anā tvamanāpirindra januṣā sanādasi | yudhedāpitvamicchase ||

You, Indra, are by your birth brotherless; from ever are you without a kinsman; the kindred you desire is(that of him) who engages in war.

नकी रेवन्तं सख्याय विन्दसे पीयन्ति ते सुराश्वः । यदा कृणोषि नदनुं समूहस्यादित्पितेव हूयसे ॥

nakī revantaṃ sakhyāya vindase pīyanti te surāśvaḥ | yadā kṛṇoṣi nadanuṃ samūhasyāditpiteva hūyase ||

You acknowledge no friendship for the wealthy man (who makes no offerings); those who are puffed upwith wine offered you; when you instrumental tute (the sacrifice), you expelled niggardliness, and you are invoked as aprotector.

मा ते अमाजुरो यथा मूरास इन्द्र सख्ये त्वावतः । नि षदाम सचा सुते ॥

mā te amājuro yathā mūrāsa indra sakhye tvāvataḥ | ni ṣadāma sacā sute ||

Let us not, like fools, Indra, be regardless of the friendship of such as you are; let us assemble togetherwhen the libation is effused.

मा ते गोदत्र निरराम राधस इन्द्र मा ते गृहामहि । दृऴ्हा चिदर्यः प्र मृशाभ्या भर न ते दामान आदभे ॥

mā te godatra nirarāma rādhasa indra mā te gṛhāmahi | dṛḻhā cidaryaḥ pra mṛśābhyā bhara na te dāmāna ādabhe ||

Let us never, Indra, giver of cattle, cease (to benefit) from your wealth; let us not accept it (from anotherthan) you; do you, who are the lord, connfirm to us permanent (riches), bestow them upon us; your benefactionscannoe be arrested.

इन्द्रो वा घेदियन्मघं सरस्वती वा सुभगा ददिर्वसु । त्वं वा चित्र दाशुषे ॥

indro vā ghediyanmaghaṃ sarasvatī vā subhagā dadirvasu | tvaṃ vā citra dāśuṣe ||

Is it Indra who has given to the donor (of the oblation) so much affluence? Is it the auspiciousSarasvatī (who has given) the treasure? Or, Citra, is it you?

चित्र इद्राजा राजका इदन्यके यके सरस्वतीमनु । पर्जन्य इव ततनद्धि वृष्ट्या सहस्रमयुता ददत् ॥

citra idrājā rājakā idanyake yake sarasvatīmanu | parjanya iva tatanaddhi vṛṣṭyā sahasramayutā dadat ||

Verily the Rājā Citra, giving his thousands and tens of thousands, has overspread (with his bounty)those other petty princes, who rules along the Sarasvatī, as Parjanya (overspeads the earth) with rain.
