[rv-8-2] • 42 श्लोकाः

इदं वसो सुतमन्धः पिबा सुपूर्णमुदरम् । अनाभयिन्ररिमा ते ॥

idaṃ vaso sutamandhaḥ pibā supūrṇamudaram | anābhayinrarimā te ||

Give of dwellings (Indra), drink this effused libation till your belly is full, we offer it, undaunted (Indra), toyou.

नृभिर्धूतः सुतो अश्नैरव्यो वारैः परिपूतः । अश्वो न निक्तो नदीषु ॥

nṛbhirdhūtaḥ suto aśnairavyo vāraiḥ paripūtaḥ | aśvo na nikto nadīṣu ||

Washed by the priests, effused by the stones, purified by the woollen filter, like a horse cleansed in astream.

तं ते यवं यथा गोभिः स्वादुमकर्म श्रीणन्तः । इन्द्र त्वास्मिन्त्सधमादे ॥

taṃ te yavaṃ yathā gobhiḥ svādumakarma śrīṇantaḥ | indra tvāsmintsadhamāde ||

We have made it sweet for you as the barley-cake mixing it with milk, and therefore, Indra, (I invoke)you to this social rite.

इन्द्र इत्सोमपा एक इन्द्रः सुतपा विश्वायुः । अन्तर्देवान्मर्त्याँश्च ॥

indra itsomapā eka indraḥ sutapā viśvāyuḥ | antardevānmartyā~śca ||

Indra verily is the chief drinker of the Soma among gods and men, the drinker of the effused libation, theaccepter of all kinds of offerings.

न यं शुक्रो न दुराशीर्न तृप्रा उरुव्यचसम् । अपस्पृण्वते सुहार्दम् ॥

na yaṃ śukro na durāśīrna tṛprā uruvyacasam | apaspṛṇvate suhārdam ||

(We praise him) a universal kind-hearted (friend), whom the pure Soma, the mixture (of it) made withdifficulty, or other satisfying (offerings) do not displease.

गोभिर्यदीमन्ये अस्मन्मृगं न व्रा मृगयन्ते । अभित्सरन्ति धेनुभिः ॥

gobhiryadīmanye asmanmṛgaṃ na vrā mṛgayante | abhitsaranti dhenubhiḥ ||

Whom others pursue with offerings of milk and curds as hunters chase a deer (with nets and snares),and harass with (inappropriate) praises.

त्रय इन्द्रस्य सोमाः सुतासः सन्तु देवस्य । स्वे क्षये सुतपाव्नः ॥

traya indrasya somāḥ sutāsaḥ santu devasya | sve kṣaye sutapāvnaḥ ||

May the three libations be effused for the divine Indra in his won dwelling, (for he is) the drinker of theeffused Soma.

त्रयः कोशासः श्चोतन्ति तिस्रश्चम्वः सुपूर्णाः । समाने अधि भार्मन् ॥

trayaḥ kośāsaḥ ścotanti tisraścamvaḥ supūrṇāḥ | samāne adhi bhārman ||

Three purifying vessels drop (the Soma), three ladles are well filled (for the libation), the whole isfurnished for the common sacrifice.

शुचिरसि पुरुनिष्ठाः क्षीरैर्मध्यत आशीर्तः । दध्ना मन्दिष्ठः शूरस्य ॥

śucirasi puruniṣṭhāḥ kṣīrairmadhyata āśīrtaḥ | dadhnā mandiṣṭhaḥ śūrasya ||

You (Soma) are pure, distributed in many vessels, mixed at the mid-day sacrifice with milk, and (at thethird sacrifice) with curds, the most exhilarating (Soma) of the hero (Indra).

इमे त इन्द्र सोमास्तीव्रा अस्मे सुतासः । शुक्रा आशिरं याचन्ते ॥

ime ta indra somāstīvrā asme sutāsaḥ | śukrā āśiraṃ yācante ||

These dsharp and pure Soma libations effused by us for you solicit you for admixture.

ताँ आशिरं पुरोऴाशमिन्द्रेमं सोमं श्रीणीहि । रेवन्तं हि त्वा शृणोमि ॥

tā~ āśiraṃ puroḻāśamindremaṃ somaṃ śrīṇīhi | revantaṃ hi tvā śṛṇomi ||

Mix, Indra, the milk and Soma, (add) the cake to this libation. I hear that you are possessed of riches.

हृत्सु पीतासो युध्यन्ते दुर्मदासो न सुरायाम् । ऊधर्न नग्ना जरन्ते ॥

hṛtsu pītāso yudhyante durmadāso na surāyām | ūdharna nagnā jarante ||

The potations (of Soma) contend in your interior (for your exhilaration) like the inebriation caused bywine; your worshippers praise you (filled full of Soma) like the udder (of a cow with milk).

रेवाँ इद्रेवतः स्तोता स्यात्त्वावतो मघोनः । प्रेदु हरिवः श्रुतस्य ॥

revā~ idrevataḥ stotā syāttvāvato maghonaḥ | predu harivaḥ śrutasya ||

May the eulogist of you, who are opulent, be opulent; may he even, lord of steeds, surpass one who iswealthy and renowned, like you.

उक्थं चन शस्यमानमगोररिरा चिकेत । न गायत्रं गीयमानम् ॥

ukthaṃ cana śasyamānamagorarirā ciketa | na gāyatraṃ gīyamānam ||

(Indra), the enemy of the unbeliever, apprehends whatever prayer is being repeated, whatever chant isbeing chanted.

मा न इन्द्र पीयत्नवे मा शर्धते परा दाः । शिक्षा शचीवः शचीभिः ॥

mā na indra pīyatnave mā śardhate parā dāḥ | śikṣā śacīvaḥ śacībhiḥ ||

Consign us not, Indra, to the slayer, not to an overpowering foe; doer of great deeds, enable us by youracts (to conquer).

वयमु त्वा तदिदर्था इन्द्र त्वायन्तः सखायः । कण्वा उक्थेभिर्जरन्ते ॥

vayamu tvā tadidarthā indra tvāyantaḥ sakhāyaḥ | kaṇvā ukthebhirjarante ||

Friends devoted, Indra, to you we, the descendants of Kaṇva, having your praise for our object, glorifyyou with prayers.

न घेमन्यदा पपन वज्रिन्नपसो नविष्टौ । तवेदु स्तोमं चिकेत ॥

na ghemanyadā papana vajrinnapaso naviṣṭau | tavedu stomaṃ ciketa ||

(Engaged), thunderer, in your recent (worship) I utter no other praise than that of you, the doer of greatdeeds, I repeat only your glorification.

इच्छन्ति देवाः सुन्वन्तं न स्वप्नाय स्पृहयन्ति । यन्ति प्रमादमतन्द्राः ॥

icchanti devāḥ sunvantaṃ na svapnāya spṛhayanti | yanti pramādamatandrāḥ ||

The gods love the man who offers libations, they desire not to (let him) sleep, thence they, unslothful,obtain the inebriating Soma.

ओ षु प्र याहि वाजेभिर्मा हृणीथा अभ्यस्मान् । महाँ इव युवजानिः ॥

o ṣu pra yāhi vājebhirmā hṛṇīthā abhyasmān | mahā~ iva yuvajāniḥ ||

Come to us quickly with excellent viands, be not bashful, like the ardent husband of a new bride.

मो ष्वद्य दुर्हणावान्त्सायं करदारे अस्मत् । अश्रीर इव जामाता ॥

mo ṣvadya durhaṇāvāntsāyaṃ karadāre asmat | aśrīra iva jāmātā ||

Let insuperable, delay (coming to us) today until the evening, like an unlucky son-in-law.

विद्मा ह्यस्य वीरस्य भूरिदावरीं सुमतिम् । त्रिषु जातस्य मनांसि ॥

vidmā hyasya vīrasya bhūridāvarīṃ sumatim | triṣu jātasya manāṃsi ||

We know the munificent genitive rosity of the hero (Indra); of the purposes of him who is manifest in thethree worlds (we are aware).

आ तू षिञ्च कण्वमन्तं न घा विद्म शवसानात् । यशस्तरं शतमूतेः ॥

ā tū ṣiñca kaṇvamantaṃ na ghā vidma śavasānāt | yaśastaraṃ śatamūteḥ ||

Pour out the libation to him who is associated with the Kaṇva (family); we know not any one morecelebrated than the very powerful bestower of numerous protections.

ज्येष्ठेन सोतरिन्द्राय सोमं वीराय शक्राय । भरा पिबन्नर्याय ॥

jyeṣṭhena sotarindrāya somaṃ vīrāya śakrāya | bharā pibannaryāya ||

Offer, worshipper, the libation in the first plural ce to the hero, the powerful Indra, the benefactor of man;may he drink (of it).

यो वेदिष्ठो अव्यथिष्वश्वावन्तं जरितृभ्यः । वाजं स्तोतृभ्यो गोमन्तम् ॥

yo vediṣṭho avyathiṣvaśvāvantaṃ jaritṛbhyaḥ | vājaṃ stotṛbhyo gomantam ||

He who most recognisant of (the merit) of those who give him no annoyance, bestows upon his adorersand praisers food with horses and cattle.

पन्यम्पन्यमित्सोतार आ धावत मद्याय । सोमं वीराय शूराय ॥

panyampanyamitsotāra ā dhāvata madyāya | somaṃ vīrāya śūrāya ||

Hasten, offerers of the libation, (to present) the glorious Soma to the valiant, the hero (Indra), for (his)exhilaration.

पाता वृत्रहा सुतमा घा गमन्नारे अस्मत् । नि यमते शतमूतिः ॥

pātā vṛtrahā sutamā ghā gamannāre asmat | ni yamate śatamūtiḥ ||

May the drinker of the Soma libation, the slayer of Vṛtra, approach, let him not be far from us; let thegranter of many protections keep in check (our enemies).

एह हरी ब्रह्मयुजा शग्मा वक्षतः सखायम् । गीर्भिः श्रुतं गिर्वणसम् ॥

eha harī brahmayujā śagmā vakṣataḥ sakhāyam | gīrbhiḥ śrutaṃ girvaṇasam ||

May the delightful steeds who are harnessed by prayer bring hither (our) friends (Indra), magnified bypraises, deserving of laudation.

स्वादवः सोमा आ याहि श्रीताः सोमा आ याहि । शिप्रिन्नृषीवः शचीवो नायमच्छा सधमादम् ॥

svādavaḥ somā ā yāhi śrītāḥ somā ā yāhi | śiprinnṛṣīvaḥ śacīvo nāyamacchā sadhamādam ||

Handsome-chinned (Indra), the honoured of sages, the doer of great deeds, come, for well-flavoured isSoma; come, for the libations are ready mixed; his (your worshipper) now (invites you) to be present at this socialexhilarating rite.

स्तुतश्च यास्त्वा वर्धन्ति महे राधसे नृम्णाय । इन्द्र कारिणं वृधन्तः ॥

stutaśca yāstvā vardhanti mahe rādhase nṛmṇāya | indra kāriṇaṃ vṛdhantaḥ ||

They who praising you magnify you, Indra, the instrumental tutor of rites, and those (hymns which glorify) youhave (for their object) great riches and strength.

गिरश्च यास्ते गिर्वाह उक्था च तुभ्यं तानि । सत्रा दधिरे शवांसि ॥

giraśca yāste girvāha ukthā ca tubhyaṃ tāni | satrā dadhire śavāṃsi ||

Upborne by hymns, those your praises and those prayers which are addressed to you, all combined,sustain your energies.

एवेदेष तुविकूर्मिर्वाजाँ एको वज्रहस्तः । सनादमृक्तो दयते ॥

evedeṣa tuvikūrmirvājā~ eko vajrahastaḥ | sanādamṛkto dayate ||

Verily this accomplisher of many acts, the chief (among the gods), the wielder of the thunderbolt, hewho has ever been unconquered, gives food (to his votaries).

हन्ता वृत्रं दक्षिणेनेन्द्रः पुरू पुरुहूतः । महान्महीभिः शचीभिः ॥

hantā vṛtraṃ dakṣiṇenendraḥ purū puruhūtaḥ | mahānmahībhiḥ śacībhiḥ ||

Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra with his right hand, the invoked of many in many (plural ces), the mighty by mighydeeds.

यस्मिन्विश्वाश्चर्षणय उत च्यौत्ना ज्रयांसि च । अनु घेन्मन्दी मघोनः ॥

yasminviśvāścarṣaṇaya uta cyautnā jrayāṃsi ca | anu ghenmandī maghonaḥ ||

He upon whom all men depend, (in whom) overwhelming energies (abide), he verily is the delighter ofthe opulent (worshipper).

एष एतानि चकारेन्द्रो विश्वा योऽति शृण्वे । वाजदावा मघोनाम् ॥

eṣa etāni cakārendro viśvā yo'ti śṛṇve | vājadāvā maghonām ||

This Indra has made all these (beings), who is thence exceedingly renowned; he is he donor of food toopulent worshippers.

प्रभर्ता रथं गव्यन्तमपाकाच्चिद्यमवति । इनो वसु स हि वोऴ्हा ॥

prabhartā rathaṃ gavyantamapākāccidyamavati | ino vasu sa hi voḻhā ||

He, whom, adoring, and desirous of cattle, the protector (Indra) defends against an ignorant (foe),becomes a prince, the possessor of wealth.

सनिता विप्रो अर्वद्भिर्हन्ता वृत्रं नृभिः शूरः । सत्योऽविता विधन्तम् ॥

sanitā vipro arvadbhirhantā vṛtraṃ nṛbhiḥ śūraḥ | satyo'vitā vidhantam ||

Liberal, wise, (borne by his won) steeds, a hero, the slayer of Vṛtra, (aided) by the Maruts, truthful, heis the protector of the performer of holy rites.

यजध्वैनं प्रियमेधा इन्द्रं सत्राचा मनसा । यो भूत्सोमैः सत्यमद्वा ॥

yajadhvainaṃ priyamedhā indraṃ satrācā manasā | yo bhūtsomaiḥ satyamadvā ||

Worship, Priyamedha, with mind intent upon him, that Indra, who is truthful when exhilarated by theSoma potations.

गाथश्रवसं सत्पतिं श्रवस्कामं पुरुत्मानम् । कण्वासो गात वाजिनम् ॥

gāthaśravasaṃ satpatiṃ śravaskāmaṃ purutmānam | kaṇvāso gāta vājinam ||

Sing, Kaṇvas, the mighty (Indra), of widely-sung renown, the protector of the good, the desirous of(sacrificial) food, present in many plural ces.

य ऋते चिद्गास्पदेभ्यो दात्सखा नृभ्यः शचीवान् । ये अस्मिन्काममश्रियन् ॥

ya ṛte cidgāspadebhyo dātsakhā nṛbhyaḥ śacīvān | ye asminkāmamaśriyan ||

He who, a friend (to his worshippers), the doer of great deeds, tracing the catttle by their foot-marks,being without (other means of detection), restored them to those leaders (of rites) who willingly put their trust inhim.

इत्था धीवन्तमद्रिवः काण्वं मेध्यातिथिम् । मेषो भूतोऽभि यन्नयः ॥

itthā dhīvantamadrivaḥ kāṇvaṃ medhyātithim | meṣo bhūto'bhi yannayaḥ ||

You, thunderer, approaching in the form of a ram, have come to Medhyātithi, one of the race ofKaṇva, thus propitiating you.

शिक्षा विभिन्दो अस्मै चत्वार्ययुता ददत् । अष्टा परः सहस्रा ॥

śikṣā vibhindo asmai catvāryayutā dadat | aṣṭā paraḥ sahasrā ||

Liberal Vibhindu, you have given to me four times ten thousand, and afterwards eight thousand.

उत सु त्ये पयोवृधा माकी रणस्य नप्त्या । जनित्वनाय मामहे ॥

uta su tye payovṛdhā mākī raṇasya naptyā | janitvanāya māmahe ||

I glorify those two (heaven and earth), the augmenters of water, the originators (of beings), thebenefactors of the worshipper, on account of their genitive ration (of the wealth so given to me).
