[rv-8-3] • 24 श्लोकाः

पिबा सुतस्य रसिनो मत्स्वा न इन्द्र गोमतः । आपिर्नो बोधि सधमाद्यो वृधेऽस्माँ अवन्तु ते धियः ॥

pibā sutasya rasino matsvā na indra gomataḥ | āpirno bodhi sadhamādyo vṛdhe'smā~ avantu te dhiyaḥ ||

Drink, Indra, of our sapid libation, mixed with milk, and be satisfied; regard thyself as our kinsman, to beexhilarated along with us for our welfare; may your (good) intentions protect us.

भूयाम ते सुमतौ वाजिनो वयं मा नः स्तरभिमातये । अस्माञ्चित्राभिरवतादभिष्टिभिरा नः सुम्नेषु यामय ॥

bhūyāma te sumatau vājino vayaṃ mā naḥ starabhimātaye | asmāñcitrābhiravatādabhiṣṭibhirā naḥ sumneṣu yāmaya ||

May we be offerers of oblations (to enjoy) your favour; harm us not for the sake of the enemy; protectus with your wondrous solicited (protections), maintain us ever in felicity.

इमा उ त्वा पुरूवसो गिरो वर्धन्तु या मम । पावकवर्णाः शुचयो विपश्चितोऽभि स्तोमैरनूषत ॥

imā u tvā purūvaso giro vardhantu yā mama | pāvakavarṇāḥ śucayo vipaścito'bhi stomairanūṣata ||

(Indra), abounding in wealth, may these my praises magnify you; the brilliant pure sages glorify you withhymns.

अयं सहस्रमृषिभिः सहस्कृतः समुद्र इव पप्रथे । सत्यः सो अस्य महिमा गृणे शवो यज्ञेषु विप्रराज्ये ॥

ayaṃ sahasramṛṣibhiḥ sahaskṛtaḥ samudra iva paprathe | satyaḥ so asya mahimā gṛṇe śavo yajñeṣu viprarājye ||

Invigorated by (the praises of) a thousand ṛṣis, this (Indra) is as vast as the ocean; the true mightinessand strength of him are glorified at sacrifices, and in the realm of the devout.

इन्द्रमिद्देवतातय इन्द्रं प्रयत्यध्वरे । इन्द्रं समीके वनिनो हवामह इन्द्रं धनस्य सातये ॥

indramiddevatātaya indraṃ prayatyadhvare | indraṃ samīke vanino havāmaha indraṃ dhanasya sātaye ||

We invoke Indra for the worship of the gods, and when the sacrifice is proceeding; adoring him, we callupon Indra as the close of the rite; we invoke him for the acquisition of wealth.

इन्द्रो मह्ना रोदसी पप्रथच्छव इन्द्रः सूर्यमरोचयत् । इन्द्रे ह विश्वा भुवनानि येमिर इन्द्रे सुवानास इन्दवः ॥

indro mahnā rodasī paprathacchava indraḥ sūryamarocayat | indre ha viśvā bhuvanāni yemira indre suvānāsa indavaḥ ||

Indra, by the might of his strength, has spread out the heaven and earth; Indra has lighted up the sun;in Indra are all beings aggregated; the distilling drops of the Soma flow to Indra.

अभि त्वा पूर्वपीतय इन्द्र स्तोमेभिरायवः । समीचीनास ऋभवः समस्वरन्रुद्रा गृणन्त पूर्व्यम् ॥

abhi tvā pūrvapītaya indra stomebhirāyavaḥ | samīcīnāsa ṛbhavaḥ samasvaranrudrā gṛṇanta pūrvyam ||

Men glorify you, Indra, with hymns that you may drink the first (of the gods); the associated Ṛbhusunite in your praise, the Rudras glorify the ancient (Indra).

अस्येदिन्द्रो वावृधे वृष्ण्यं शवो मदे सुतस्य विष्णवि । अद्या तमस्य महिमानमायवोऽनु ष्टुवन्ति पूर्वथा ॥

asyedindro vāvṛdhe vṛṣṇyaṃ śavo made sutasya viṣṇavi | adyā tamasya mahimānamāyavo'nu ṣṭuvanti pūrvathā ||

Indra augments the energy and the strength of this (his worshipper), when he exhilaration of the Somais diffused through his body; men celebrate in due order his might today as they did of old.

तत्त्वा यामि सुवीर्यं तद्ब्रह्म पूर्वचित्तये । येना यतिभ्यो भृगवे धने हिते येन प्रस्कण्वमाविथ ॥

tattvā yāmi suvīryaṃ tadbrahma pūrvacittaye | yenā yatibhyo bhṛgave dhane hite yena praskaṇvamāvitha ||

I solicit you, Indra, for such vigour and for such food as may be hoped for in priority (to others),wherewith you have granted to Bhṛgu the wealth taken from those who had desired from sacrifices, wherewithyou have protected prakṣaṇva.

येना समुद्रमसृजो महीरपस्तदिन्द्र वृष्णि ते शवः । सद्यः सो अस्य महिमा न संनशे यं क्षोणीरनुचक्रदे ॥

yenā samudramasṛjo mahīrapastadindra vṛṣṇi te śavaḥ | sadyaḥ so asya mahimā na saṃnaśe yaṃ kṣoṇīranucakrade ||

Wherewith you have sent the great waters tot he ocean; such as is your wish-fulfilling strength; thatmight of Indra is not easily to be resisted which the earth obeys.

शग्धी न इन्द्र यत्त्वा रयिं यामि सुवीर्यम् । शग्धि वाजाय प्रथमं सिषासते शग्धि स्तोमाय पूर्व्य ॥

śagdhī na indra yattvā rayiṃ yāmi suvīryam | śagdhi vājāya prathamaṃ siṣāsate śagdhi stomāya pūrvya ||

Grant us, Indra, the wealth accompanied by vigour, which I solicit from you; give (wealth) first of all tohim desirous of gratifying you, presenting (sacrificial) food; give (wealth), you who are of old, to him who glorifiesyou.

शग्धी नो अस्य यद्ध पौरमाविथ धिय इन्द्र सिषासतः । शग्धि यथा रुशमं श्यावकं कृपमिन्द्र प्रावः स्वर्णरम् ॥

śagdhī no asya yaddha pauramāvitha dhiya indra siṣāsataḥ | śagdhi yathā ruśamaṃ śyāvakaṃ kṛpamindra prāvaḥ svarṇaram ||

Give to this our (worshipper) engaged in celebrating your sacred rites, Indra, (the wealth) whereby youhave protected the son of Puru, grant to the man (aspiring) to heaven (the wealth wherewith) you havepreserved, O Indra, Ruśama, Śyāvaka and Kṛpa.

कन्नव्यो अतसीनां तुरो गृणीत मर्त्यः । नही न्वस्य महिमानमिन्द्रियं स्वर्गृणन्त आनशुः ॥

kannavyo atasīnāṃ turo gṛṇīta martyaḥ | nahī nvasya mahimānamindriyaṃ svargṛṇanta ānaśuḥ ||

What living mortal, the prompter of ever-rising (praises), may now glorify Indra? No one of thoseheretofore praising him have attained the greatness of the properties of Indra.

कदु स्तुवन्त ऋतयन्त देवत ऋषिः को विप्र ओहते । कदा हवं मघवन्निन्द्र सुन्वतः कदु स्तुवत आ गमः ॥

kadu stuvanta ṛtayanta devata ṛṣiḥ ko vipra ohate | kadā havaṃ maghavannindra sunvataḥ kadu stuvata ā gamaḥ ||

Who, praising you as the deity, (ever) hoped to sacrifice to you? What saint, what sage conveys (hispraises to yo?) When, opulent Indra, have you come to the invocation of one pouring out libations, of onerepeating (your) praise?

उदु त्ये मधुमत्तमा गिरः स्तोमास ईरते । सत्राजितो धनसा अक्षितोतयो वाजयन्तो रथा इव ॥

udu tye madhumattamā giraḥ stomāsa īrate | satrājito dhanasā akṣitotayo vājayanto rathā iva ||

These most sweet songs, these hymns of praise ascent (to you), like triumphant chariots laden withwealth, charged with unfailing protections, intended to procure food.

कण्वा इव भृगवः सूर्या इव विश्वमिद्धीतमानशुः । इन्द्रं स्तोमेभिर्महयन्त आयवः प्रियमेधासो अस्वरन् ॥

kaṇvā iva bhṛgavaḥ sūryā iva viśvamiddhītamānaśuḥ | indraṃ stomebhirmahayanta āyavaḥ priyamedhāso asvaran ||

The Bhṛgus, like the Kaṇvas, have verily attained to the all- pervading (Indra), on whom they havemeditated, as the sun (pervades the unverse by his rays); men of the Priyamedha race, worshipping Indra withpraises glorify him.

युक्ष्वा हि वृत्रहन्तम हरी इन्द्र परावतः । अर्वाचीनो मघवन्त्सोमपीतय उग्र ऋष्वेभिरा गहि ॥

yukṣvā hi vṛtrahantama harī indra parāvataḥ | arvācīno maghavantsomapītaya ugra ṛṣvebhirā gahi ||

Utter destroyer of Vṛtra, harness your horses come down to us, fierce Maghavan, with your attendantsfrom afar to drink the Soma.

इमे हि ते कारवो वावशुर्धिया विप्रासो मेधसातये । स त्वं नो मघवन्निन्द्र गिर्वणो वेनो न शृणुधी हवम् ॥

ime hi te kāravo vāvaśurdhiyā viprāso medhasātaye | sa tvaṃ no maghavannindra girvaṇo veno na śṛṇudhī havam ||

These wise celebrators (of holy rites) repeatedly propitiate you with pious praise for the acceptance ofthe sacrifice; do you, opulent Indra, who are entitled to praise, hear our invocation like one who listens to what hedesires.

निरिन्द्र बृहतीभ्यो वृत्रं धनुभ्यो अस्फुरः । निरर्बुदस्य मृगयस्य मायिनो निः पर्वतस्य गा आजः ॥

nirindra bṛhatībhyo vṛtraṃ dhanubhyo asphuraḥ | nirarbudasya mṛgayasya māyino niḥ parvatasya gā ājaḥ ||

You have extirpated Vṛtra with your mighty weapons; you have been the destroyer of the deceptiveArbuda and Ṃgaya; you have extricated the cattle from the mountain.

निरग्नयो रुरुचुर्निरु सूर्यो निः सोम इन्द्रियो रसः । निरन्तरिक्षादधमो महामहिं कृषे तदिन्द्र पौंस्यम् ॥

niragnayo rurucurniru sūryo niḥ soma indriyo rasaḥ | nirantarikṣādadhamo mahāmahiṃ kṛṣe tadindra pauṃsyam ||

When you had expelled the mighty Ahi from the firmament, then the fires blazed out, the sun shoneforth, the ambrosial Soma destined for Indra flowed out, and you, Indra, did manifest your manhood.

यं मे दुरिन्द्रो मरुतः पाकस्थामा कौरयाणः । विश्वेषां त्मना शोभिष्ठमुपेव दिवि धावमानम् ॥

yaṃ me durindro marutaḥ pākasthāmā kaurayāṇaḥ | viśveṣāṃ tmanā śobhiṣṭhamupeva divi dhāvamānam ||

Such wealth as Indra and the Maruts have bestowed upon me, such has Pākasthāman, the son ofKurayāṇa, bestowed, of itself the most magnificent of all, like the quick-moving (sun) in the sky.

रोहितं मे पाकस्थामा सुधुरं कक्ष्यप्राम् । अदाद्रायो विबोधनम् ॥

rohitaṃ me pākasthāmā sudhuraṃ kakṣyaprām | adādrāyo vibodhanam ||

Pākasthāman has given me a tawny robust beast of burden, the means of acquiring riches.

यस्मा अन्ये दश प्रति धुरं वहन्ति वह्नयः । अस्तं वयो न तुग्र्यम् ॥

yasmā anye daśa prati dhuraṃ vahanti vahnayaḥ | astaṃ vayo na tugryam ||

Whose burden ten other bearers (of loads) (would be required) to convey, such as were the steeds thatbore Bhujyu home.

आत्मा पितुस्तनूर्वास ओजोदा अभ्यञ्जनम् । तुरीयमिद्रोहितस्य पाकस्थामानं भोजं दातारमब्रवम् ॥

ātmā pitustanūrvāsa ojodā abhyañjanam | turīyamidrohitasya pākasthāmānaṃ bhojaṃ dātāramabravam ||

His father's own son, the giver of dwellings, the sustainer of strength like (invigorating) unguents, Icelebrate Pākasthāman, the destroyer (of foes), the despoiler (of enemies), the donor of the tawny (horse).
