[rv-8-18] • 22 श्लोकाः

इदं ह नूनमेषां सुम्नं भिक्षेत मर्त्यः । आदित्यानामपूर्व्यं सवीमनि ॥

idaṃ ha nūnameṣāṃ sumnaṃ bhikṣeta martyaḥ | ādityānāmapūrvyaṃ savīmani ||

Let a mortal now earnestly solicit at the worship of these Ādityas unprecedented riches.

अनर्वाणो ह्येषां पन्था आदित्यानाम् । अदब्धाः सन्ति पायवः सुगेवृधः ॥

anarvāṇo hyeṣāṃ panthā ādityānām | adabdhāḥ santi pāyavaḥ sugevṛdhaḥ ||

The paths of these Ādityas are unobstructed and unopposed; may they yield us security and augmentour happiness.

तत्सु नः सविता भगो वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा । शर्म यच्छन्तु सप्रथो यदीमहे ॥

tatsu naḥ savitā bhago varuṇo mitro aryamā | śarma yacchantu sapratho yadīmahe ||

May Savitā, Bhaga, Varuṇa, Mitra, and Aryaman bestow upon us that ample felicity which we solicit.

देवेभिर्देव्यदितेऽरिष्टभर्मन्ना गहि । स्मत्सूरिभिः पुरुप्रिये सुशर्मभिः ॥

devebhirdevyadite'riṣṭabharmannā gahi | smatsūribhiḥ purupriye suśarmabhiḥ ||

Divine Aditi, bringer of safety, beloved of many, com propitiously with the wise and happy divinitieṣ

ते हि पुत्रासो अदितेर्विदुर्द्वेषांसि योतवे । अंहोश्चिदुरुचक्रयोऽनेहसः ॥

te hi putrāso aditervidurdveṣāṃsi yotave | aṃhościdurucakrayo'nehasaḥ ||

These sons of Aditi know how to drive away (our) enmies; and, doers of great deeds and donors ofsecurity, (they know how to extricate us) from sin.

अदितिर्नो दिवा पशुमदितिर्नक्तमद्वयाः । अदितिः पात्वंहसः सदावृधा ॥

aditirno divā paśumaditirnaktamadvayāḥ | aditiḥ pātvaṃhasaḥ sadāvṛdhā ||

May Aditi protect our cattle by day, ad, free from duplicity (guard them) by night; may Aditi, by herconstant favour, preserve us from sin.

उत स्या नो दिवा मतिरदितिरूत्या गमत् । सा शंताति मयस्करदप स्रिधः ॥

uta syā no divā matiraditirūtyā gamat | sā śaṃtāti mayaskaradapa sridhaḥ ||

May the monitress Aditi come to us, for our prosecution by day; may she grant us tranquil felicity, andlive away, (our) enemies.

उत त्या दैव्या भिषजा शं नः करतो अश्विना । युयुयातामितो रपो अप स्रिधः ॥

uta tyā daivyā bhiṣajā śaṃ naḥ karato aśvinā | yuyuyātāmito rapo apa sridhaḥ ||

May the two divine physicians, the Aśvins, grant us health; may they drive away from hence iniquity;(may they drive) away our foes.

शमग्निरग्निभिः करच्छं नस्तपतु सूर्यः । शं वातो वात्वरपा अप स्रिधः ॥

śamagniragnibhiḥ karacchaṃ nastapatu sūryaḥ | śaṃ vāto vātvarapā apa sridhaḥ ||

May the two divine physicians, the Aśvins, grant us health; may they drive away from hence iniquity;(may they drive) away our foes.

अपामीवामप स्रिधमप सेधत दुर्मतिम् । आदित्यासो युयोतना नो अंहसः ॥

apāmīvāmapa sridhamapa sedhata durmatim | ādityāso yuyotanā no aṃhasaḥ ||

Ādityas, remove (from us) disease, enemies, malignity; keep us afar from sin.

युयोता शरुमस्मदाँ आदित्यास उतामतिम् । ऋधग्द्वेषः कृणुत विश्ववेदसः ॥

yuyotā śarumasmadā~ ādityāsa utāmatim | ṛdhagdveṣaḥ kṛṇuta viśvavedasaḥ ||

Keep afar from us, Ādityas, malignity, ill-will; do you who are all- wise keep afar those who hate us.

तत्सु नः शर्म यच्छतादित्या यन्मुमोचति । एनस्वन्तं चिदेनसः सुदानवः ॥

tatsu naḥ śarma yacchatādityā yanmumocati | enasvantaṃ cidenasaḥ sudānavaḥ ||

Grant freely to us, genitive rous Ādityas, that happiness which liberates even the offending (worshipper)from sin.

यो नः कश्चिद्रिरिक्षति रक्षस्त्वेन मर्त्यः । स्वैः ष एवै रिरिषीष्ट युर्जनः ॥

yo naḥ kaścidririkṣati rakṣastvena martyaḥ | svaiḥ ṣa evai ririṣīṣṭa yurjanaḥ ||

May that man who, from his diabolical nature seeks to do us evil-- may he, injuring himself by his owndevices, incu that evil.

समित्तमघमश्नवद्दुःशंसं मर्त्यं रिपुम् । यो अस्मत्रा दुर्हणावाँ उप द्वयुः ॥

samittamaghamaśnavadduḥśaṃsaṃ martyaṃ ripum | yo asmatrā durhaṇāvā~ upa dvayuḥ ||

May iniquity pervade hat calumniating and hostile mortal who wishes to do us harm, and is treacheroustowards us.

पाकत्रा स्थन देवा हृत्सु जानीथ मर्त्यम् । उप द्वयुं चाद्वयुं च वसवः ॥

pākatrā sthana devā hṛtsu jānītha martyam | upa dvayuṃ cādvayuṃ ca vasavaḥ ||

Deities, you are (propitious) to sincere (worshippers), you know, Vasus, the hearts of men, anddistinguish between the single and double-minded.

आ शर्म पर्वतानामोतापां वृणीमहे । द्यावाक्षामारे अस्मद्रपस्कृतम् ॥

ā śarma parvatānāmotāpāṃ vṛṇīmahe | dyāvākṣāmāre asmadrapaskṛtam ||

We solicit the happiness of the mountains and of the waters; heaven and earth, remove sin far from us.

ते नो भद्रेण शर्मणा युष्माकं नावा वसवः । अति विश्वानि दुरिता पिपर्तन ॥

te no bhadreṇa śarmaṇā yuṣmākaṃ nāvā vasavaḥ | ati viśvāni duritā pipartana ||

Convey us, Vasus, in your vessel, with auspicious felicity, beyond all calamities.

तुचे तनाय तत्सु नो द्राघीय आयुर्जीवसे । आदित्यासः सुमहसः कृणोतन ॥

tuce tanāya tatsu no drāghīya āyurjīvase | ādityāsaḥ sumahasaḥ kṛṇotana ||

Radiant Ādityas grant to our sons and grandsons to enjoy long life.

यज्ञो हीऴो वो अन्तर आदित्या अस्ति मृऴत । युष्मे इद्वो अपि ष्मसि सजात्ये ॥

yajño hīḻo vo antara ādityā asti mṛḻata | yuṣme idvo api ṣmasi sajātye ||

The duly-presented sacrifice is ready for you, Ādityas; grant us, therefore, happiness; may we everabide in near relationship with you.

बृहद्वरूथं मरुतां देवं त्रातारमश्विना । मित्रमीमहे वरुणं स्वस्तये ॥

bṛhadvarūthaṃ marutāṃ devaṃ trātāramaśvinā | mitramīmahe varuṇaṃ svastaye ||

We solicit of the divine protector of he Maruts, of the Aśvisn, of Mitra and of Varuṇa, a spaciousdwelling for our welfare.

अनेहो मित्रार्यमन्नृवद्वरुण शंस्यम् । त्रिवरूथं मरुतो यन्त नश्छर्दिः ॥

aneho mitrāryamannṛvadvaruṇa śaṃsyam | trivarūthaṃ maruto yanta naśchardiḥ ||

Mitra, Aryaman, Varuṇa and Maruts, grant us a secure, excellent and well-peopled dwelling, athree-fold shelter.

ये चिद्धि मृत्युबन्धव आदित्या मनवः स्मसि । प्र सू न आयुर्जीवसे तिरेतन ॥

ye ciddhi mṛtyubandhava ādityā manavaḥ smasi | pra sū na āyurjīvase tiretana ||

Since, Ādityas, we mortals are of kin to death, do you benevolently (exert yourselves to) prolong ourlives.
