[rv-8-16] • 12 श्लोकाः

प्र सम्राजं चर्षणीनामिन्द्रं स्तोता नव्यं गीर्भिः । नरं नृषाहं मंहिष्ठम् ॥

pra samrājaṃ carṣaṇīnāmindraṃ stotā navyaṃ gīrbhiḥ | naraṃ nṛṣāhaṃ maṃhiṣṭham ||

Glorify with hymns the adorable Indra, the supreme king of men, the leader (of rites), the overcomer ofenemies, the most munificent.

यस्मिन्नुक्थानि रण्यन्ति विश्वानि च श्रवस्या । अपामवो न समुद्रे ॥

yasminnukthāni raṇyanti viśvāni ca śravasyā | apāmavo na samudre ||

In whom all praises, all kinds of sustenance concentrate, like the aggregation of the waters in theocean.

तं सुष्टुत्या विवासे ज्येष्ठराजं भरे कृत्नुम् । महो वाजिनं सनिभ्यः ॥

taṃ suṣṭutyā vivāse jyeṣṭharājaṃ bhare kṛtnum | maho vājinaṃ sanibhyaḥ ||

I worship Indra with pious praises, glorious among the best (of beings), the achiever of great deeds inwar mighty for the acquisition (of wealth).

यस्यानूना गभीरा मदा उरवस्तरुत्राः । हर्षुमन्तः शूरसातौ ॥

yasyānūnā gabhīrā madā uravastarutrāḥ | harṣumantaḥ śūrasātau ||

Whose unbounded and profound exhilarations are many, protective, and animating in waṛ

तमिद्धनेषु हितेष्वधिवाकाय हवन्ते । येषामिन्द्रस्ते जयन्ति ॥

tamiddhaneṣu hiteṣvadhivākāya havante | yeṣāmindraste jayanti ||

(His worshippers) invoke him to take part (in spoiling) the trasures deposited (with the foe); theyconquer, of whom Indra is (the partisan).

तमिच्च्यौत्नैरार्यन्ति तं कृतेभिश्चर्षणयः । एष इन्द्रो वरिवस्कृत् ॥

tamiccyautnairāryanti taṃ kṛtebhiścarṣaṇayaḥ | eṣa indro varivaskṛt ||

They honour him with animating (hymns), men (honour) him with sacred rites, for Indra is the giver ofwealth.

इन्द्रो ब्रह्मेन्द्र ऋषिरिन्द्रः पुरू पुरुहूतः । महान्महीभिः शचीभिः ॥

indro brahmendra ṛṣirindraḥ purū puruhūtaḥ | mahānmahībhiḥ śacībhiḥ ||

Indra is Brahmā, Indra is the ṛṣi; Indra is the much-invoked of many, mighty with mighty deeds.

स स्तोम्यः स हव्यः सत्यः सत्वा तुविकूर्मिः । एकश्चित्सन्नभिभूतिः ॥

sa stomyaḥ sa havyaḥ satyaḥ satvā tuvikūrmiḥ | ekaścitsannabhibhūtiḥ ||

He is to be praised, he is to be invoked, he is true, powerful the doer of many deeds; he, being single,is the overcomer (of his foes).

तमर्केभिस्तं सामभिस्तं गायत्रैश्चर्षणयः । इन्द्रं वर्धन्ति क्षितयः ॥

tamarkebhistaṃ sāmabhistaṃ gāyatraiścarṣaṇayaḥ | indraṃ vardhanti kṣitayaḥ ||

Men who are cognizant (of sacred texts) magnify Indra with pious precepts, with sacred songs, and withprayers.

प्रणेतारं वस्यो अच्छा कर्तारं ज्योतिः समत्सु । सासह्वांसं युधामित्रान् ॥

praṇetāraṃ vasyo acchā kartāraṃ jyotiḥ samatsu | sāsahvāṃsaṃ yudhāmitrān ||

Him (they magnify) who brings before them the spoil, who gives lustre in combats, who overcomesenemies in battle.

स नः पप्रिः पारयाति स्वस्ति नावा पुरुहूतः । इन्द्रो विश्वा अति द्विषः ॥

sa naḥ papriḥ pārayāti svasti nāvā puruhūtaḥ | indro viśvā ati dviṣaḥ ||

May Indra, the fulfiller (of desires), the invoked of many, bear us beyond (the reach of) all our enemies,to welfare, as if by a ship (across the sea).

स त्वं न इन्द्र वाजेभिर्दशस्या च गातुया च । अच्छा च नः सुम्नं नेषि ॥

sa tvaṃ na indra vājebhirdaśasyā ca gātuyā ca | acchā ca naḥ sumnaṃ neṣi ||

Do you, Indra, (endow) us with vigour, bestow upon us (wealth, enable us) to go (by the right way), leadus to felicity.
