[rv-8-13] • 33 श्लोकाः

इन्द्रः सुतेषु सोमेषु क्रतुं पुनीत उक्थ्यम् । विदे वृधस्य दक्षसो महान्हि षः ॥

indraḥ suteṣu someṣu kratuṃ punīta ukthyam | vide vṛdhasya dakṣaso mahānhi ṣaḥ ||

Indra, when the Soma juices are effused, sanctifies the offerer and the praiser for the attainment ofincrease giving strength, for he is mighty.

स प्रथमे व्योमनि देवानां सदने वृधः । सुपारः सुश्रवस्तमः समप्सुजित् ॥

sa prathame vyomani devānāṃ sadane vṛdhaḥ | supāraḥ suśravastamaḥ samapsujit ||

Abiding in the highest heaven, in the dwelling of the gods, he is the giver of increase, the accomplisher(of works), the possessor of great renown, the conqueror of (the obstructer of) the rains.

तमह्वे वाजसातय इन्द्रं भराय शुष्मिणम् । भवा नः सुम्ने अन्तमः सखा वृधे ॥

tamahve vājasātaya indraṃ bharāya śuṣmiṇam | bhavā naḥ sumne antamaḥ sakhā vṛdhe ||

I invoke the powerful Indra for (aid in) the food-bestowing combat; be near unto us for our happiness;be a friend for our increase.

इयं त इन्द्र गिर्वणो रातिः क्षरति सुन्वतः । मन्दानो अस्य बर्हिषो वि राजसि ॥

iyaṃ ta indra girvaṇo rātiḥ kṣarati sunvataḥ | mandāno asya barhiṣo vi rājasi ||

This gift of the offerer of the libation flows to you, Indra, who are gratified by praise, exhilarated bywhich you reign over the sacrifice.

नूनं तदिन्द्र दद्धि नो यत्त्वा सुन्वन्त ईमहे । रयिं नश्चित्रमा भरा स्वर्विदम् ॥

nūnaṃ tadindra daddhi no yattvā sunvanta īmahe | rayiṃ naścitramā bharā svarvidam ||

Bestow upon us, Indra, that which, when pouring out the libation, we solicit of you; grant us thewondrous wealth that is the means of obtaining heaven.

स्तोता यत्ते विचर्षणिरतिप्रशर्धयद्गिरः । वया इवानु रोहते जुषन्त यत् ॥

stotā yatte vicarṣaṇiratipraśardhayadgiraḥ | vayā ivānu rohate juṣanta yat ||

When your discriminating eulogist has addressed to you overpowering praises, then, if they areacceptable to you, they expand like the branches (of a tree).

प्रत्नवज्जनया गिरः शृणुधी जरितुर्हवम् । मदेमदे ववक्षिथा सुकृत्वने ॥

pratnavajjanayā giraḥ śṛṇudhī jariturhavam | mademade vavakṣithā sukṛtvane ||

genitive rate your eulogies as of old; hear the invocation of the adorer; you bear in your reiteratedexultation (blessings) to the liberal donor (of the oblation).

क्रीऴन्त्यस्य सूनृता आपो न प्रवता यतीः । अया धिया य उच्यते पतिर्दिवः ॥

krīḻantyasya sūnṛtā āpo na pravatā yatīḥ | ayā dhiyā ya ucyate patirdivaḥ ||

The kind and true words of him who in this hymn is called the lord of heaven sport like waters flowingby a downward (channel).

उतो पतिर्य उच्यते कृष्टीनामेक इद्वशी । नमोवृधैरवस्युभिः सुते रण ॥

uto patirya ucyate kṛṣṭīnāmeka idvaśī | namovṛdhairavasyubhiḥ sute raṇa ||

Or he, who is called the one absolute lord of men-- praise him, when the libation is effused, withmagnifying songs, imploring his protection.

स्तुहि श्रुतं विपश्चितं हरी यस्य प्रसक्षिणा । गन्तारा दाशुषो गृहं नमस्विनः ॥

stuhi śrutaṃ vipaścitaṃ harī yasya prasakṣiṇā | gantārā dāśuṣo gṛhaṃ namasvinaḥ ||

Praise the renowned, the sapient (Indra), whose victorious horses proceed to the dwelling of the devoutdonor (of the libation).

तूतुजानो महेमतेऽश्वेभिः प्रुषितप्सुभिः । आ याहि यज्ञमाशुभिः शमिद्धि ते ॥

tūtujāno mahemate'śvebhiḥ pruṣitapsubhiḥ | ā yāhi yajñamāśubhiḥ śamiddhi te ||

Munificently minded, do you, who are quick of movement, come with shining and swift steeds to thesacrifice, for verily there is gratification to you thereby.

इन्द्र शविष्ठ सत्पते रयिं गृणत्सु धारय । श्रवः सूरिभ्यो अमृतं वसुत्वनम् ॥

indra śaviṣṭha satpate rayiṃ gṛṇatsu dhāraya | śravaḥ sūribhyo amṛtaṃ vasutvanam ||

Most powerful Indra, protector of the virtuous, secure us who praise you in the possession of riches,(grant) to the pious imperishable all-pervading sustenance.

हवे त्वा सूर उदिते हवे मध्यंदिने दिवः । जुषाण इन्द्र सप्तिभिर्न आ गहि ॥

have tvā sūra udite have madhyaṃdine divaḥ | juṣāṇa indra saptibhirna ā gahi ||

I invoke you when the sun is risen; I invoke (you) at mid-day; being propitited, come to us, Indra, withyour gliding steeds.

आ तू गहि प्र तु द्रव मत्स्वा सुतस्य गोमतः । तन्तुं तनुष्व पूर्व्यं यथा विदे ॥

ā tū gahi pra tu drava matsvā sutasya gomataḥ | tantuṃ tanuṣva pūrvyaṃ yathā vide ||

Come quickly; hasten, be exhilarated by the libation mixed with milk; extend the ancient sacrifice, sothat I may obtain (its reward).

यच्छक्रासि परावति यदर्वावति वृत्रहन् । यद्वा समुद्रे अन्धसोऽवितेदसि ॥

yacchakrāsi parāvati yadarvāvati vṛtrahan | yadvā samudre andhaso'vitedasi ||

Whether, Śakra, you be far off, or, slayer of Vṛtra, near at hand, or whether you be in the firmament,you are the guardian of the (sacrificial) food.

इन्द्रं वर्धन्तु नो गिर इन्द्रं सुतास इन्दवः । इन्द्रे हविष्मतीर्विशो अराणिषुः ॥

indraṃ vardhantu no gira indraṃ sutāsa indavaḥ | indre haviṣmatīrviśo arāṇiṣuḥ ||

May our praises magnify Indra! May our effused libations gratify Indra! May the people bearingoblations excite plural asure in Indra!

तमिद्विप्रा अवस्यवः प्रवत्वतीभिरूतिभिः । इन्द्रं क्षोणीरवर्धयन्वया इव ॥

tamidviprā avasyavaḥ pravatvatībhirūtibhiḥ | indraṃ kṣoṇīravardhayanvayā iva ||

The pious, desiring his protection, magnify him by ample and plural asure- yielding (libations); the earth,(and other worlds, spread out) like the branches of a tree, magnify Indra.

त्रिकद्रुकेषु चेतनं देवासो यज्ञमत्नत । तमिद्वर्धन्तु नो गिरः सदावृधम् ॥

trikadrukeṣu cetanaṃ devāso yajñamatnata | tamidvardhantu no giraḥ sadāvṛdham ||

The gods propitiate the superintending adorable (Indra) at the Trikadruka rites. May our praisesmagnify him who is ever the magnifier (of his worshippers).

स्तोता यत्ते अनुव्रत उक्थान्यृतुथा दधे । शुचिः पावक उच्यते सो अद्भुतः ॥

stotā yatte anuvrata ukthānyṛtuthā dadhe | śuciḥ pāvaka ucyate so adbhutaḥ ||

Your worshipper is observant of his duty, inasmuch as he offers prayers indue season; for you are hewho is called pure, purifying, wonderful.

तदिद्रुद्रस्य चेतति यह्वं प्रत्नेषु धामसु । मनो यत्रा वि तद्दधुर्विचेतसः ॥

tadidrudrasya cetati yahvaṃ pratneṣu dhāmasu | mano yatrā vi taddadhurvicetasaḥ ||

The progeny of Rudra (the Maruts) is known in ancient plural ces, and to them the intelligent worshippersoffer adoration.

यदि मे सख्यमावर इमस्य पाह्यन्धसः । येन विश्वा अति द्विषो अतारिम ॥

yadi me sakhyamāvara imasya pāhyandhasaḥ | yena viśvā ati dviṣo atārima ||

If, (Indra), you choose my friendship, partake of this (sacrificial) food, by which we may pass beyond(the reach of) all adversaries.

कदा त इन्द्र गिर्वणः स्तोता भवाति शंतमः । कदा नो गव्ये अश्व्ये वसौ दधः ॥

kadā ta indra girvaṇaḥ stotā bhavāti śaṃtamaḥ | kadā no gavye aśvye vasau dadhaḥ ||

When, Indra, who delight in praise, may your worshipper be entirely happy? When will you establish usin (the affluence of) cattle, of horses, of dwellings?

उत ते सुष्टुता हरी वृषणा वहतो रथम् । अजुर्यस्य मदिन्तमं यमीमहे ॥

uta te suṣṭutā harī vṛṣaṇā vahato ratham | ajuryasya madintamaṃ yamīmahe ||

Or, when will your renowned and vigorous horses bring the chariot of you, who are exempt from decay,that exhilarating (wealth) which we solicit?

तमीमहे पुरुष्टुतं यह्वं प्रत्नाभिरूतिभिः । नि बर्हिषि प्रिये सददध द्विता ॥

tamīmahe puruṣṭutaṃ yahvaṃ pratnābhirūtibhiḥ | ni barhiṣi priye sadadadha dvitā ||

We solicit with ancient and gratifying (offerings) him who is mighty and the invoked of many; may he sitdown on the plural asant sacred grass, and accept the two-fold (offering of cakes and Soma).

वर्धस्वा सु पुरुष्टुत ऋषिष्टुताभिरूतिभिः । धुक्षस्व पिप्युषीमिषमवा च नः ॥

vardhasvā su puruṣṭuta ṛṣiṣṭutābhirūtibhiḥ | dhukṣasva pipyuṣīmiṣamavā ca naḥ ||

Praised of many, prosper (us) with the protections hymned by the ṛṣis, send down upon us nutritiousfood.

इन्द्र त्वमवितेदसीत्था स्तुवतो अद्रिवः । ऋतादियर्मि ते धियं मनोयुजम् ॥

indra tvamavitedasītthā stuvato adrivaḥ | ṛtādiyarmi te dhiyaṃ manoyujam ||

Thunderbolt-bearing Indra, you are the protector of him who thus eulogises you; I seek through sacrificefor your favour, which is to be gained by praise.

इह त्या सधमाद्या युजानः सोमपीतये । हरी इन्द्र प्रतद्वसू अभि स्वर ॥

iha tyā sadhamādyā yujānaḥ somapītaye | harī indra pratadvasū abhi svara ||

Harnessing your horses, Indra, laden with treasure and sharing your exhilaratio, come here to drink ofthe Soma.

अभि स्वरन्तु ये तव रुद्रासः सक्षत श्रियम् । उतो मरुत्वतीर्विशो अभि प्रयः ॥

abhi svarantu ye tava rudrāsaḥ sakṣata śriyam | uto marutvatīrviśo abhi prayaḥ ||

May the sons of Rudra, who are your followers, approach and partake of the glory (of the sacrifice); andmay (other celestial) people associated with the Maruts (partake of the sacrificial) food.

इमा अस्य प्रतूर्तयः पदं जुषन्त यद्दिवि । नाभा यज्ञस्य सं दधुर्यथा विदे ॥

imā asya pratūrtayaḥ padaṃ juṣanta yaddivi | nābhā yajñasya saṃ dadhuryathā vide ||

May those who (are his attndants), victorious (over enemies), be satisfied with the station (which theyoccupy) in heaven, and may they be assembled at the navel of the sacrifice, that I may therefrom acquire(wealth).

अयं दीर्घाय चक्षसे प्राचि प्रयत्यध्वरे । मिमीते यज्ञमानुषग्विचक्ष्य ॥

ayaṃ dīrghāya cakṣase prāci prayatyadhvare | mimīte yajñamānuṣagvicakṣya ||

When the ceremony is being prepared in the hall of sacrifice, this (Indra), having inspected the rite,regulates (the performance) in due succession for a distant object.

वृषायमिन्द्र ते रथ उतो ते वृषणा हरी । वृषा त्वं शतक्रतो वृषा हवः ॥

vṛṣāyamindra te ratha uto te vṛṣaṇā harī | vṛṣā tvaṃ śatakrato vṛṣā havaḥ ||

Your chariot, Indra, is a showerer (of benefits), showerers (of benefits) are your horses; you alsoŚatakratu, are the showerer (of benefits) the invocation (addressed to you) is the showerer (of benefits).

वृषा ग्रावा वृषा मदो वृषा सोमो अयं सुतः । वृषा यज्ञो यमिन्वसि वृषा हवः ॥

vṛṣā grāvā vṛṣā mado vṛṣā somo ayaṃ sutaḥ | vṛṣā yajño yaminvasi vṛṣā havaḥ ||

The stone (that bruises the Soma) is the showerer (of benefits), so is your exhilaration and this Somathat is effused; the sacrifice that you accept is the showerer (of benefits),such also is your invocation.

वृषा त्वा वृषणं हुवे वज्रिञ्चित्राभिरूतिभिः । वावन्थ हि प्रतिष्टुतिं वृषा हवः ॥

vṛṣā tvā vṛṣaṇaṃ huve vajriñcitrābhirūtibhiḥ | vāvantha hi pratiṣṭutiṃ vṛṣā havaḥ ||

The showerer (of the oblation) I invoke with manifold and gratifying (praises) you, O thunderer, theshowerer (of benefits); inasmuch as you acknowledge the eulogy addressed to you, your invocation is theshowerer (of benefits).
