[rv-8-12] • 33 श्लोकाः

य इन्द्र सोमपातमो मदः शविष्ठ चेतति । येना हंसि न्यत्रिणं तमीमहे ॥

ya indra somapātamo madaḥ śaviṣṭha cetati | yenā haṃsi nyatriṇaṃ tamīmahe ||

We solicit, most powerful Indra, who are the deep quaffer of the Soma, that exhilaration whichcontemplates (heroic deeds), whereby you slay the devourer (of men).

येना दशग्वमध्रिगुं वेपयन्तं स्वर्णरम् । येना समुद्रमाविथा तमीमहे ॥

yenā daśagvamadhriguṃ vepayantaṃ svarṇaram | yenā samudramāvithā tamīmahe ||

We solicit that (exhilaration) whereby you have defended Adhrigu, the accomplisher of the ten (monthśrite), and the trembling leader of heaven, (the sun), and the ocean.

येन सिन्धुं महीरपो रथाँ इव प्रचोदयः । पन्थामृतस्य यातवे तमीमहे ॥

yena sindhuṃ mahīrapo rathā~ iva pracodayaḥ | panthāmṛtasya yātave tamīmahe ||

We solicit that (exhilaration) whereby you urge on the mighty waters to the sea, in like manner as(charioteers drive) their cars (to the goal), and (whereby) to travel the paths of sacrifice.

इमं स्तोममभिष्टये घृतं न पूतमद्रिवः । येना नु सद्य ओजसा ववक्षिथ ॥

imaṃ stomamabhiṣṭaye ghṛtaṃ na pūtamadrivaḥ | yenā nu sadya ojasā vavakṣitha ||

Accepts, thunderer, their praise (offered) for the attainment of our desires, like consecrated butter;(induced) by which, you, promptly bear us by your might (to our objects).

इमं जुषस्व गिर्वणः समुद्र इव पिन्वते । इन्द्र विश्वाभिरूतिभिर्ववक्षिथ ॥

imaṃ juṣasva girvaṇaḥ samudra iva pinvate | indra viśvābhirūtibhirvavakṣitha ||

Be plural ased, you who are gratified by praise, with this our eulogy swelling like the oceans, (induced bywhich), Indra, you ber us with all your proections (to our objects).

यो नो देवः परावतः सखित्वनाय मामहे । दिवो न वृष्टिं प्रथयन्ववक्षिथ ॥

yo no devaḥ parāvataḥ sakhitvanāya māmahe | divo na vṛṣṭiṃ prathayanvavakṣitha ||

(I glorify Indra) the deity, who, coming from afar, has given us, through friendship, (riches); heaping(them upon us) like rain from heaven, you have borne us (to our objects).

ववक्षुरस्य केतवो उत वज्रो गभस्त्योः । यत्सूर्यो न रोदसी अवर्धयत् ॥

vavakṣurasya ketavo uta vajro gabhastyoḥ | yatsūryo na rodasī avardhayat ||

The banners of Indra, the thunderbolt (he bears) in his hands, have brought (us benefits), when, likethe sun, he has expanded heaven and earth.

यदि प्रवृद्ध सत्पते सहस्रं महिषाँ अघः । आदित्त इन्द्रियं महि प्र वावृधे ॥

yadi pravṛddha satpate sahasraṃ mahiṣā~ aghaḥ | āditta indriyaṃ mahi pra vāvṛdhe ||

Great Indra, protector of the good, when you have slain thousands of mighty (foes), then your vast andspecial energy has been augmented.

इन्द्रः सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिर्न्यर्शसानमोषति । अग्निर्वनेव सासहिः प्र वावृधे ॥

indraḥ sūryasya raśmibhirnyarśasānamoṣati | agnirvaneva sāsahiḥ pra vāvṛdhe ||

Indra, with the rays of the sun, utterly consumes his adversary; like fire (burning) the forests, hespreads victorious.

इयं त ऋत्वियावती धीतिरेति नवीयसी । सपर्यन्ती पुरुप्रिया मिमीत इत् ॥

iyaṃ ta ṛtviyāvatī dhītireti navīyasī | saparyantī purupriyā mimīta it ||

This new praise, suited to the season, approaches, (Indra), to you; offering adoration and greatlydelighting (you), it verily proclaims the measure (of your merits).

गर्भो यज्ञस्य देवयुः क्रतुं पुनीत आनुषक् । स्तोमैरिन्द्रस्य वावृधे मिमीत इत् ॥

garbho yajñasya devayuḥ kratuṃ punīta ānuṣak | stomairindrasya vāvṛdhe mimīta it ||

The devout praiser of the adorable (Indra) purifies in due succession the offering (of the Soma); withsacred hymns he magnifies (the might) of Indra; he verily proclaims the measure (of hismerits).

सनिर्मित्रस्य पप्रथ इन्द्रः सोमस्य पीतये । प्राची वाशीव सुन्वते मिमीत इत् ॥

sanirmitrasya papratha indraḥ somasya pītaye | prācī vāśīva sunvate mimīta it ||

Indra, the benefactor of his friend (the worshipper), has enlarged himself to drik the Soma, in likemanner as the pious praise dilates and proclaims the measure (of his merits).

यं विप्रा उक्थवाहसोऽभिप्रमन्दुरायवः । घृतं न पिप्य आसन्यृतस्य यत् ॥

yaṃ viprā ukthavāhaso'bhipramandurāyavaḥ | ghṛtaṃ na pipya āsanyṛtasya yat ||

I pour the oblation of the sacrifice, like clarified butter, into the mouth (of that Indra), whom wise men,addressing with prayers, delight.

उत स्वराजे अदितिः स्तोममिन्द्राय जीजनत् । पुरुप्रशस्तमूतय ऋतस्य यत् ॥

uta svarāje aditiḥ stomamindrāya jījanat | purupraśastamūtaya ṛtasya yat ||

The excellent praise which Aditi brought forth for the imperial Indra, for our protection, is that which was(the product) of the sacrifice.

अभि वह्नय ऊतयेऽनूषत प्रशस्तये । न देव विव्रता हरी ऋतस्य यत् ॥

abhi vahnaya ūtaye'nūṣata praśastaye | na deva vivratā harī ṛtasya yat ||

The bearers of the oblation glorify (Indra) for his excellent protection; now, divinity, let yourmany-actioned horses (bear you to the offering) of the sacrifice.

यत्सोममिन्द्र विष्णवि यद्वा घ त्रित आप्त्ये । यद्वा मरुत्सु मन्दसे समिन्दुभिः ॥

yatsomamindra viṣṇavi yadvā gha trita āptye | yadvā marutsu mandase samindubhiḥ ||

Inasmuch as you are exhilarated by the Soma shared with Viṣṇu, or when (offered) by Trita, the son ofthe waters, or along with the Maruts, so now (be gratified) by (our) libation.

यद्वा शक्र परावति समुद्रे अधि मन्दसे । अस्माकमित्सुते रणा समिन्दुभिः ॥

yadvā śakra parāvati samudre adhi mandase | asmākamitsute raṇā samindubhiḥ ||

Inasmuch, Śakra, as you are exhilarated (by the Soma) on the far- distant ocean, so be you gratifiednow, when the Soma is effused by our libations.

यद्वासि सुन्वतो वृधो यजमानस्य सत्पते । उक्थे वा यस्य रण्यसि समिन्दुभिः ॥

yadvāsi sunvato vṛdho yajamānasya satpate | ukthe vā yasya raṇyasi samindubhiḥ ||

Inasmuch, protector of the virtuous, as you are the benefactor of the worshipper offering you libations,or by whose prayers you are propitiated, so now (be gratified) by our libations.

देवंदेवं वोऽवस इन्द्रमिन्द्रं गृणीषणि । अधा यज्ञाय तुर्वणे व्यानशुः ॥

devaṃdevaṃ vo'vasa indramindraṃ gṛṇīṣaṇi | adhā yajñāya turvaṇe vyānaśuḥ ||

I glorify the divine Indra wherever worshipped for your protection; (my praises) have reached him for theprompt (fulfilment) of the (objects of the) sacrifice.

यज्ञेभिर्यज्ञवाहसं सोमेभिः सोमपातमम् । होत्राभिरिन्द्रं वावृधुर्व्यानशुः ॥

yajñebhiryajñavāhasaṃ somebhiḥ somapātamam | hotrābhirindraṃ vāvṛdhurvyānaśuḥ ||

(His worshippers) have magnified with many sacrifices him to whom the sacrifice is offered, and withmany libations the eager quaffer of the Soma; (they have magnified) Indra with hymns, (their praises) haveattained him.

महीरस्य प्रणीतयः पूर्वीरुत प्रशस्तयः । विश्वा वसूनि दाशुषे व्यानशुः ॥

mahīrasya praṇītayaḥ pūrvīruta praśastayaḥ | viśvā vasūni dāśuṣe vyānaśuḥ ||

Infinite are his bounties, many are his glories; ample treasures have reached the donor (of oblations).

इन्द्रं वृत्राय हन्तवे देवासो दधिरे पुरः । इन्द्रं वाणीरनूषता समोजसे ॥

indraṃ vṛtrāya hantave devāso dadhire puraḥ | indraṃ vāṇīranūṣatā samojase ||

The gods have plural ced Indra (foremost) for the destruction of Vṛtra; their praise has been addressed tohim to enhance his vigour.

महान्तं महिना वयं स्तोमेभिर्हवनश्रुतम् । अर्कैरभि प्र णोनुमः समोजसे ॥

mahāntaṃ mahinā vayaṃ stomebhirhavanaśrutam | arkairabhi pra ṇonumaḥ samojase ||

We repeatedly glorify with praises and adorations him who is great with greatness, who hears ourinvocations, (to enhance) his vigour.

न यं विविक्तो रोदसी नान्तरिक्षाणि वज्रिणम् । अमादिदस्य तित्विषे समोजसः ॥

na yaṃ vivikto rodasī nāntarikṣāṇi vajriṇam | amādidasya titviṣe samojasaḥ ||

The thunderer, from whom neither the heaven and earth nor the firmament are separated; from thestrength of whom, the mighty one, (the world) derives lustre.

यदिन्द्र पृतनाज्ये देवास्त्वा दधिरे पुरः । आदित्ते हर्यता हरी ववक्षतुः ॥

yadindra pṛtanājye devāstvā dadhire puraḥ | āditte haryatā harī vavakṣatuḥ ||

When, Indra, the gods plural ced you foremost in the battle, then your beloved horses bore you.

यदा वृत्रं नदीवृतं शवसा वज्रिन्नवधीः । आदित्ते हर्यता हरी ववक्षतुः ॥

yadā vṛtraṃ nadīvṛtaṃ śavasā vajrinnavadhīḥ | āditte haryatā harī vavakṣatuḥ ||

When, thunderer, by your strength you did slay Vṛtra, the obstructer of the waters, then your belovedhorses bore you.

यदा ते विष्णुरोजसा त्रीणि पदा विचक्रमे । आदित्ते हर्यता हरी ववक्षतुः ॥

yadā te viṣṇurojasā trīṇi padā vicakrame | āditte haryatā harī vavakṣatuḥ ||

When your (younger brother) Viṣṇu by (his) strength stepped his three paces, then verily your belovedhorses bore you.

यदा ते हर्यता हरी वावृधाते दिवेदिवे । आदित्ते विश्वा भुवनानि येमिरे ॥

yadā te haryatā harī vāvṛdhāte divedive | āditte viśvā bhuvanāni yemire ||

When your beloved horses had augmented day by day, then all existent beings were subject unto you.

यदा ते मारुतीर्विशस्तुभ्यमिन्द्र नियेमिरे । आदित्ते विश्वा भुवनानि येमिरे ॥

yadā te mārutīrviśastubhyamindra niyemire | āditte viśvā bhuvanāni yemire ||

When, Indra, your people, the Maruts, were regulated by you, then all existent beings were subject untoyou.

यदा सूर्यममुं दिवि शुक्रं ज्योतिरधारयः । आदित्ते विश्वा भुवनानि येमिरे ॥

yadā sūryamamuṃ divi śukraṃ jyotiradhārayaḥ | āditte viśvā bhuvanāni yemire ||

Whenyou had plural ced yonder pure light, the sun, in the sky, then all existing beings were subject untoyou.

इमां त इन्द्र सुष्टुतिं विप्र इयर्ति धीतिभिः । जामिं पदेव पिप्रतीं प्राध्वरे ॥

imāṃ ta indra suṣṭutiṃ vipra iyarti dhītibhiḥ | jāmiṃ padeva pipratīṃ prādhvare ||

The wise (worshipper), Indra, offers you this gratifying sincere praise along with pious rites at thesacrifice, as (a man plural ces) a kinsman in (a prominent) position.

यदस्य धामनि प्रिये समीचीनासो अस्वरन् । नाभा यज्ञस्य दोहना प्राध्वरे ॥

yadasya dhāmani priye samīcīnāso asvaran | nābhā yajñasya dohanā prādhvare ||

When the congregated (worshippers) praise him aloud in a plural ce that plural ases (him) on the navel (of theearth), in the spot where the libation is effused at the sacrifice, (then).

सुवीर्यं स्वश्व्यं सुगव्यमिन्द्र दद्धि नः । होतेव पूर्वचित्तये प्राध्वरे ॥

suvīryaṃ svaśvyaṃ sugavyamindra daddhi naḥ | hoteva pūrvacittaye prādhvare ||

Bestow upon us, Indra, (wealth), comprising worthy male ofspring, excellent horses, and good cattle;like the ministrant priest (I worship you) at the sacrifice, (to secure) your prior consideration.
