[rv-8-11] • 10 श्लोकाः

त्वमग्ने व्रतपा असि देव आ मर्त्येष्वा । त्वं यज्ञेष्वीड्यः ॥

tvamagne vratapā asi deva ā martyeṣvā | tvaṃ yajñeṣvīḍyaḥ ||

Agni, who are a god among mortals, (and among gods), you are the guardian of religious obligations;you are to be hymned at sacrifices.

त्वमसि प्रशस्यो विदथेषु सहन्त्य । अग्ने रथीरध्वराणाम् ॥

tvamasi praśasyo vidatheṣu sahantya | agne rathīradhvarāṇām ||

Victor (over enemies), you are to be hymned at solemn rites; you, Agni, are the charioteer of sacrifices.

स त्वमस्मदप द्विषो युयोधि जातवेदः । अदेवीरग्ने अरातीः ॥

sa tvamasmadapa dviṣo yuyodhi jātavedaḥ | adevīragne arātīḥ ||

Do you, Jātavedas, drive away from us those who hate us; (drive away), Agni, the impious hostilehosts.

अन्ति चित्सन्तमह यज्ञं मर्तस्य रिपोः । नोप वेषि जातवेदः ॥

anti citsantamaha yajñaṃ martasya ripoḥ | nopa veṣi jātavedaḥ ||

You desire not, Jātavedas, the sacrifice of the man who is our adversary, although plural ced before you.

मर्ता अमर्त्यस्य ते भूरि नाम मनामहे । विप्रासो जातवेदसः ॥

martā amartyasya te bhūri nāma manāmahe | viprāso jātavedasaḥ ||

Prudent mortals, we offer abundant homage to you, who are immortal and all-knowing.

विप्रं विप्रासोऽवसे देवं मर्तास ऊतये । अग्निं गीर्भिर्हवामहे ॥

vipraṃ viprāso'vase devaṃ martāsa ūtaye | agniṃ gīrbhirhavāmahe ||

Prudent mortals, we invoke the sage deity Agni with hymns to propitiate him for our protection.

आ ते वत्सो मनो यमत्परमाच्चित्सधस्थात् । अग्ने त्वांकामया गिरा ॥

ā te vatso mano yamatparamāccitsadhasthāt | agne tvāṃkāmayā girā ||

Vatsa, by the praise that seeks to propitiate you, Agni, would draw your thought from the supremeassembly (of the gods).

पुरुत्रा हि सदृङ्ङसि विशो विश्वा अनु प्रभुः । समत्सु त्वा हवामहे ॥

purutrā hi sadṛṅṅasi viśo viśvā anu prabhuḥ | samatsu tvā havāmahe ||

You look upon many plural ces, you are lord over all people; we call upon you in battles.

समत्स्वग्निमवसे वाजयन्तो हवामहे । वाजेषु चित्रराधसम् ॥

samatsvagnimavase vājayanto havāmahe | vājeṣu citrarādhasam ||

Desiring strength, we call upon Agni for protection in battles; upon him who is the granter of wonderfulriches (won) in conflicts.

प्रत्नो हि कमीड्यो अध्वरेषु सनाच्च होता नव्यश्च सत्सि । स्वां चाग्ने तन्वं पिप्रयस्वास्मभ्यं च सौभगमा यजस्व ॥

pratno hi kamīḍyo adhvareṣu sanācca hotā navyaśca satsi | svāṃ cāgne tanvaṃ piprayasvāsmabhyaṃ ca saubhagamā yajasva ||

You, the ancient, are to be hymned at sacrifices; from eternity the invoker of the gods, you sit (at thesolemnity) entitled to laudation; cherish, Agni, yor own person n, and grant us prosperity.
