[rv-7-4] • 10 श्लोकाः

प्र वः शुक्राय भानवे भरध्वं हव्यं मतिं चाग्नये सुपूतम् । यो दैव्यानि मानुषा जनूंष्यन्तर्विश्वानि विद्मना जिगाति ॥

pra vaḥ śukrāya bhānave bharadhvaṃ havyaṃ matiṃ cāgnaye supūtam | yo daivyāni mānuṣā janūṃṣyantarviśvāni vidmanā jigāti ||

Offer your sacred oblation, and praise the bright and radiant Agni, who passes with wisdom between alldivine and human beings.

स गृत्सो अग्निस्तरुणश्चिदस्तु यतो यविष्ठो अजनिष्ट मातुः । सं यो वना युवते शुचिदन्भूरि चिदन्ना समिदत्ति सद्यः ॥

sa gṛtso agnistaruṇaścidastu yato yaviṣṭho ajaniṣṭa mātuḥ | saṃ yo vanā yuvate śucidanbhūri cidannā samidatti sadyaḥ ||

May the sagacious Agni be our conductor from the time that he is orn, most youthful, of his mother; hewho, bright-toothed, attacks the forest, and quickly devours his abundant food.

अस्य देवस्य संसद्यनीके यं मर्तासः श्येतं जगृभ्रे । नि यो गृभं पौरुषेयीमुवोच दुरोकमग्निरायवे शुशोच ॥

asya devasya saṃsadyanīke yaṃ martāsaḥ śyetaṃ jagṛbhre | ni yo gṛbhaṃ pauruṣeyīmuvoca durokamagnirāyave śuśoca ||

Whom mortals apprehend as white (shining) in the principal station of that divinity; he who assents tomanly adoration, and blazes for the good of man, and the discomfiture (of his foes).

अयं कविरकविषु प्रचेता मर्तेष्वग्निरमृतो नि धायि । स मा नो अत्र जुहुरः सहस्वः सदा त्वे सुमनसः स्याम ॥

ayaṃ kavirakaviṣu pracetā marteṣvagniramṛto ni dhāyi | sa mā no atra juhuraḥ sahasvaḥ sadā tve sumanasaḥ syāma ||

This far-seeing, sagacious, immortal Agni, has been stationed among short-sighted mortals; harm usnot, vigorous Agni, in this world, that we may ever be devoted to you.

आ यो योनिं देवकृतं ससाद क्रत्वा ह्यग्निरमृताँ अतारीत् । तमोषधीश्च वनिनश्च गर्भं भूमिश्च विश्वधायसं बिभर्ति ॥

ā yo yoniṃ devakṛtaṃ sasāda kratvā hyagniramṛtā~ atārīt | tamoṣadhīśca vaninaśca garbhaṃ bhūmiśca viśvadhāyasaṃ bibharti ||

The herbs, and the trees, and the earth, contain as a germ that all- supporting Agni, who occupies aplace provided by the gods, that by his functions he may convey (the offerings) to the immortals.

ईशे ह्यग्निरमृतस्य भूरेरीशे रायः सुवीर्यस्य दातोः । मा त्वा वयं सहसावन्नवीरा माप्सवः परि षदाम मादुवः ॥

īśe hyagniramṛtasya bhūrerīśe rāyaḥ suvīryasya dātoḥ | mā tvā vayaṃ sahasāvannavīrā māpsavaḥ pari ṣadāma māduvaḥ ||

Agni has power to grant abundant food; he has power to grant riches with male posterity; vigorous Agni,let us not sit down before you devoid of sons, of beauty, of devotion.

परिषद्यं ह्यरणस्य रेक्णो नित्यस्य रायः पतयः स्याम । न शेषो अग्ने अन्यजातमस्त्यचेतानस्य मा पथो वि दुक्षः ॥

pariṣadyaṃ hyaraṇasya rekṇo nityasya rāyaḥ patayaḥ syāma | na śeṣo agne anyajātamastyacetānasya mā patho vi dukṣaḥ ||

Wealth is competent to the acquittance of debt; may we be masters of permanent riches; that is notoffspring which is begotten by another; alter not the paths (of the genitive ration) of a blockhead.

नहि ग्रभायारणः सुशेवोऽन्योदर्यो मनसा मन्तवा उ । अधा चिदोकः पुनरित्स एत्या नो वाज्यभीषाऴेतु नव्यः ॥

nahi grabhāyāraṇaḥ suśevo'nyodaryo manasā mantavā u | adhā cidokaḥ punaritsa etyā no vājyabhīṣāḻetu navyaḥ ||

One not acquitting debts, although worthy of regard, yet begotten of another, is not to be contemplatedeven in the mind (as fit) for acceptance; for verily he returns to his own house; therefore let there come to us (ason) new- born, possessed of food, victorious over foes.

त्वमग्ने वनुष्यतो नि पाहि त्वमु नः सहसावन्नवद्यात् । सं त्वा ध्वस्मन्वदभ्येतु पाथः सं रयिः स्पृहयाय्यः सहस्री ॥

tvamagne vanuṣyato ni pāhi tvamu naḥ sahasāvannavadyāt | saṃ tvā dhvasmanvadabhyetu pāthaḥ saṃ rayiḥ spṛhayāyyaḥ sahasrī ||

Do you, Agni, defend us against, the malignant; do you, who are endowed with strengt, (preserve us)from sin; may the (sacrificial) food come to you free from defect; may the riches that we desire come to us bythousands.

एता नो अग्ने सौभगा दिदीह्यपि क्रतुं सुचेतसं वतेम । विश्वा स्तोतृभ्यो गृणते च सन्तु यूयं पात स्वस्तिभिः सदा नः ॥

etā no agne saubhagā didīhyapi kratuṃ sucetasaṃ vatema | viśvā stotṛbhyo gṛṇate ca santu yūyaṃ pāta svastibhiḥ sadā naḥ ||

Illumine for us, Agni, these auspicious (riches); may we possess (a son) intelligent, the celebrator ofsacred rites; may all (good things) be to your praisers and to him who eulogizes (you); and do you ever cherishus with blessings.
