[rv-5-61] • 19 श्लोकाः

के ष्ठा नरः श्रेष्ठतमा य एकएक आयय । परमस्याः परावतः ॥

ke ṣṭhā naraḥ śreṣṭhatamā ya ekaeka āyaya | paramasyāḥ parāvataḥ ||

Who are you, most excellent leadeers (of rites), who come one by one from a region exceedingly remote?

क्व वोऽश्वाः क्वाभीशवः कथं शेक कथा यय । पृष्ठे सदो नसोर्यमः ॥

kva vo'śvāḥ kvābhīśavaḥ kathaṃ śeka kathā yaya | pṛṣṭhe sado nasoryamaḥ ||

Where are your horses? where your reins? what is your capability? where are you going? The saddle is on the back (of the steeds), the bridle in their nostrils.

जघने चोद एषां वि सक्थानि नरो यमुः । पुत्रकृथे न जनयः ॥

jaghane coda eṣāṃ vi sakthāni naro yamuḥ | putrakṛthe na janayaḥ ||

The goad is (applied) to their flanks; the drivers force them to spread their thighs apart, like women in bringing forth children.

परा वीरास एतन मर्यासो भद्रजानयः । अग्नितपो यथासथ ॥

parā vīrāsa etana maryāso bhadrajānayaḥ | agnitapo yathāsatha ||

Heroes, friendly to man, of honourable birth, you are as if blazing with fire.

सनत्साश्व्यं पशुमुत गव्यं शतावयम् । श्यावाश्वस्तुताय या दोर्वीरायोपबर्बृहत् ॥

sanatsāśvyaṃ paśumuta gavyaṃ śatāvayam | śyāvāśvastutāya yā dorvīrāyopabarbṛhat ||

She, (Śaśiyasī), who has thrown her arms round the hero Taranta, who was eulogized by Śyāvāśva, has given me cattle comprising horses, and cows, and hundreds of sheep.

उत त्वा स्त्री शशीयसी पुंसो भवति वस्यसी । अदेवत्रादराधसः ॥

uta tvā strī śaśīyasī puṃso bhavati vasyasī | adevatrādarādhasaḥ ||

Śaśīyasi, though a feminine le, is more excellent than a man who reverences not the gods, nor bestows wealth.

वि या जानाति जसुरिं वि तृष्यन्तं वि कामिनम् । देवत्रा कृणुते मनः ॥

vi yā jānāti jasuriṃ vi tṛṣyantaṃ vi kāminam | devatrā kṛṇute manaḥ ||

For she discerns one who suffers pain, one who is in want, or one desirous (of any thing), and directs her mind towards the gods.

उत घा नेमो अस्तुतः पुमाँ इति ब्रुवे पणिः । स वैरदेय इत्समः ॥

uta ghā nemo astutaḥ pumā~ iti bruve paṇiḥ | sa vairadeya itsamaḥ ||

And, eulogizing (him), I proclaim that the man, her (other) half is, (as it were), uncommended, for he is ever the same in munificent donations.

उत मेऽरपद्युवतिर्ममन्दुषी प्रति श्यावाय वर्तनिम् । वि रोहिता पुरुमीऴ्हाय येमतुर्विप्राय दीर्घयशसे ॥

uta me'rapadyuvatirmamanduṣī prati śyāvāya vartanim | vi rohitā purumīḻhāya yematurviprāya dīrghayaśase ||

Young and affable, she has explained to me, Śyāvāśva, the road, and two ruddy horses have borne me to the valiant and renowned Purumīḷha.

यो मे धेनूनां शतं वैददश्विर्यथा ददत् । तरन्त इव मंहना ॥

yo me dhenūnāṃ śataṃ vaidadaśviryathā dadat | taranta iva maṃhanā ||

Who, the son of Vidadaśva, has given me a hundred (head) of cattle, and, like Taranta, many precious gifts.

य ईं वहन्त आशुभिः पिबन्तो मदिरं मधु । अत्र श्रवांसि दधिरे ॥

ya īṃ vahanta āśubhiḥ pibanto madiraṃ madhu | atra śravāṃsi dadhire ||

Those (Maruts) who are brought hither by swift horses, drinking the inembriating juice, receive here gratification.

येषां श्रियाधि रोदसी विभ्राजन्ते रथेष्वा । दिवि रुक्म इवोपरि ॥

yeṣāṃ śriyādhi rodasī vibhrājante ratheṣvā | divi rukma ivopari ||

They by whose glory heaven and earth are surpassed; who shine splendid in their chariots like the radiant (sun) in the heaven above.

युवा स मारुतो गणस्त्वेषरथो अनेद्यः । शुभंयावाप्रतिष्कुतः ॥

yuvā sa māruto gaṇastveṣaratho anedyaḥ | śubhaṃyāvāpratiṣkutaḥ ||

That company of Maruts, ever young, riding in bright chariots, irreproachable, auspicious, motive, unobstructed.

को वेद नूनमेषां यत्रा मदन्ति धूतयः । ऋतजाता अरेपसः ॥

ko veda nūnameṣāṃ yatrā madanti dhūtayaḥ | ṛtajātā arepasaḥ ||

Who knows of a certainty their (abode), where the intimidators (of their foes) rejoice? born for (the distribution of) water, exempt from defects.

यूयं मर्तं विपन्यवः प्रणेतार इत्था धिया । श्रोतारो यामहूतिषु ॥

yūyaṃ martaṃ vipanyavaḥ praṇetāra itthā dhiyā | śrotāro yāmahūtiṣu ||

Desirous of praise, you are the guides (to happiness) of the man who propitiates (you) by this pious rite; you are bearers of invocations to the sacrifice.

ते नो वसूनि काम्या पुरुश्चन्द्रा रिशादसः । आ यज्ञियासो ववृत्तन ॥

te no vasūni kāmyā puruścandrā riśādasaḥ | ā yajñiyāso vavṛttana ||

Do you, who are destroyers of the male violent, abounding in wealth, and entitled to adoration, bestow upon us desirable riches.

एतं मे स्तोममूर्म्ये दार्भ्याय परा वह । गिरो देवि रथीरिव ॥

etaṃ me stomamūrmye dārbhyāya parā vaha | giro devi rathīriva ||

Bear to Dārbhya, oḥ night, turning away (from me to him), this my eulogy (of the Maruts); convey my praises, goddess, as a charioteer (conveys the contents of his vehicle to their destination).

उत मे वोचतादिति सुतसोमे रथवीतौ । न कामो अप वेति मे ॥

uta me vocatāditi sutasome rathavītau | na kāmo apa veti me ||

And say on my behalf to Rathavīti, when the libation is poured out, my love (for your daughter) does not depart.

एष क्षेति रथवीतिर्मघवा गोमतीरनु । पर्वतेष्वपश्रितः ॥

eṣa kṣeti rathavītirmaghavā gomatīranu | parvateṣvapaśritaḥ ||

This opulent Rathavīti dwells upon the (banks of the) Gomatī (river), and has his home on (the skirts of) the (Himālaya) mountains.
