[rv-4-4] • 15 श्लोकाः

कृणुष्व पाजः प्रसितिं न पृथ्वीं याहि राजेवामवाँ इभेन । तृष्वीमनु प्रसितिं द्रूणानोऽस्तासि विध्य रक्षसस्तपिष्ठैः ॥

kṛṇuṣva pājaḥ prasitiṃ na pṛthvīṃ yāhi rājevāmavā~ ibhena | tṛṣvīmanu prasitiṃ drūṇāno'stāsi vidhya rakṣasastapiṣṭhaiḥ ||

Put forth your strength, Agni, as a fowler spreads a capacious snare; proceed like a king attended by his followers on his elephant; you are the scatterer (of your foes); following the swift-moving host consume the rākṣasas with your fiercest flames.

तव भ्रमास आशुया पतन्त्यनु स्पृश धृषता शोशुचानः । तपूंष्यग्ने जुह्वा पतंगानसंदितो वि सृज विष्वगुल्काः ॥

tava bhramāsa āśuyā patantyanu spṛśa dhṛṣatā śośucānaḥ | tapūṃṣyagne juhvā pataṃgānasaṃdito vi sṛja viṣvagulkāḥ ||

Your swift and errant flames descend (on everyside); fierce-shining with vigour consume (the foe); scatter, Agni, with the ladle (of oblation), scorching flames and sparks, and brands.

प्रति स्पशो वि सृज तूर्णितमो भवा पायुर्विशो अस्या अदब्धः । यो नो दूरे अघशंसो यो अन्त्यग्ने माकिष्टे व्यथिरा दधर्षीत् ॥

prati spaśo vi sṛja tūrṇitamo bhavā pāyurviśo asyā adabdhaḥ | yo no dūre aghaśaṃso yo antyagne mākiṣṭe vyathirā dadharṣīt ||

Do you, who are most rapid, direct your (flames) against opposing (rays), and, unresisted, become the protector of this your people against the calumniator who is remote or who is nigh; let no malevolent (foe) prevail against us (who are) your worshippers.

उदग्ने तिष्ठ प्रत्या तनुष्व न्यमित्राँ ओषतात्तिग्महेते । यो नो अरातिं समिधान चक्रे नीचा तं धक्ष्यतसं न शुष्कम् ॥

udagne tiṣṭha pratyā tanuṣva nyamitrā~ oṣatāttigmahete | yo no arātiṃ samidhāna cakre nīcā taṃ dhakṣyatasaṃ na śuṣkam ||

Sharp-weaponed Agni, rise up; spread wide (your flames) against (the rākṣasas); entirely consume the foes; blazing Agni, burn down him who acts as an enemy towards us like a piece of dry timber.

ऊर्ध्वो भव प्रति विध्याध्यस्मदाविष्कृणुष्व दैव्यान्यग्ने । अव स्थिरा तनुहि यातुजूनां जामिमजामिं प्र मृणीहि शत्रून् ॥

ūrdhvo bhava prati vidhyādhyasmadāviṣkṛṇuṣva daivyānyagne | ava sthirā tanuhi yātujūnāṃ jāmimajāmiṃ pra mṛṇīhi śatrūn ||

Rise up, Agni, chastise those who overpower us; manifest your divine energies; slacken the strone (bow strings) of the malignant kings; destroy those (who are hostile), whether kindred or unallied.

स ते जानाति सुमतिं यविष्ठ य ईवते ब्रह्मणे गातुमैरत् । विश्वान्यस्मै सुदिनानि रायो द्युम्नान्यर्यो वि दुरो अभि द्यौत् ॥

sa te jānāti sumatiṃ yaviṣṭha ya īvate brahmaṇe gātumairat | viśvānyasmai sudināni rāyo dyumnānyaryo vi duro abhi dyaut ||

He experiences your good favour, young (of the gods), who offers praise to you a Brahman, coming quickly (to bestow felicity); to him are all prosperous days and wealth (of cattle) and treasures; do you as the lord of sacrifice, shine upon his dwelling.

सेदग्ने अस्तु सुभगः सुदानुर्यस्त्वा नित्येन हविषा य उक्थैः । पिप्रीषति स्व आयुषि दुरोणे विश्वेदस्मै सुदिना सासदिष्टिः ॥

sedagne astu subhagaḥ sudānuryastvā nityena haviṣā ya ukthaiḥ | piprīṣati sva āyuṣi duroṇe viśvedasmai sudinā sāsadiṣṭiḥ ||

May the liberal man ever be prosperous who propitiate you with constant oblations and praises; may all the days in his arduous life be prosperous, and may this (his) sacrifice be (productive of reward).

अर्चामि ते सुमतिं घोष्यर्वाक्सं ते वावाता जरतामियं गीः । स्वश्वास्त्वा सुरथा मर्जयेमास्मे क्षत्राणि धारयेरनु द्यून् ॥

arcāmi te sumatiṃ ghoṣyarvāksaṃ te vāvātā jaratāmiyaṃ gīḥ | svaśvāstvā surathā marjayemāsme kṣatrāṇi dhārayeranu dyūn ||

I reverence your good favour, Agni; may this reiterated and resounding hymn convey due praise to your presence; may we be possessed of good horses and good cars, that we may pay you homage; and do you daily bestow upon us riches.

इह त्वा भूर्या चरेदुप त्मन्दोषावस्तर्दीदिवांसमनु द्यून् । क्रीऴन्तस्त्वा सुमनसः सपेमाभि द्युम्ना तस्थिवांसो जनानाम् ॥

iha tvā bhūryā caredupa tmandoṣāvastardīdivāṃsamanu dyūn | krīḻantastvā sumanasaḥ sapemābhi dyumnā tasthivāṃso janānām ||

May every one of his own accord diligently worship you, shining in the (hall) morning and evening, every day; thus, sporting in our dwellings, (enjoying) the wealth (of hostile) man, may we with happy hearts worship you.

यस्त्वा स्वश्वः सुहिरण्यो अग्न उपयाति वसुमता रथेन । तस्य त्राता भवसि तस्य सखा यस्त आतिथ्यमानुषग्जुजोषत् ॥

yastvā svaśvaḥ suhiraṇyo agna upayāti vasumatā rathena | tasya trātā bhavasi tasya sakhā yasta ātithyamānuṣagjujoṣat ||

You Agni, are the protector of him who, possessed of good horses and a golden car, approaches you with a chariot laden with wealth; you are the friend of him who gratifies you be the due performance of hospitality to you.

महो रुजामि बन्धुता वचोभिस्तन्मा पितुर्गोतमादन्वियाय । त्वं नो अस्य वचसश्चिकिद्धि होतर्यविष्ठ सुक्रतो दमूनाः ॥

maho rujāmi bandhutā vacobhistanmā piturgotamādanviyāya | tvaṃ no asya vacasaścikiddhi hotaryaviṣṭha sukrato damūnāḥ ||

Invoker (of the gods), young (of the deities) possessed of excellent wisdom, through the alliance (with you produced) by holy texts, which came to me from my father Gotama, I demolish the powerful (demons); do you who are the humbler (of foes), be cognizant of our praises.

अस्वप्नजस्तरणयः सुशेवा अतन्द्रासोऽवृका अश्रमिष्ठाः । ते पायवः सध्र्यञ्चो निषद्याग्ने तव नः पान्त्वमूर ॥

asvapnajastaraṇayaḥ suśevā atandrāso'vṛkā aśramiṣṭhāḥ | te pāyavaḥ sadhryañco niṣadyāgne tava naḥ pāntvamūra ||

All-wise Agni, may your protecting (rays), unslumbering alert, propitious, unslothful, benignant, unwearied, co-operating, having taken their plural ce (at this sacrifice), preserve us.

ये पायवो मामतेयं ते अग्ने पश्यन्तो अन्धं दुरितादरक्षन् । ररक्ष तान्त्सुकृतो विश्ववेदा दिप्सन्त इद्रिपवो नाह देभुः ॥

ye pāyavo māmateyaṃ te agne paśyanto andhaṃ duritādarakṣan | rarakṣa tāntsukṛto viśvavedā dipsanta idripavo nāha debhuḥ ||

Those your protecting (rays), Agni, which, beholding (what had chanced), preserved the blind son of Mamatā from misfortune; he, knowing all things, cherished those benevolent (rays), and his enemies, intending to destroy him, wrought him no harm.

त्वया वयं सधन्यस्त्वोतास्तव प्रणीत्यश्याम वाजान् । उभा शंसा सूदय सत्यतातेऽनुष्ठुया कृणुह्यह्रयाण ॥

tvayā vayaṃ sadhanyastvotāstava praṇītyaśyāma vājān | ubhā śaṃsā sūdaya satyatāte'nuṣṭhuyā kṛṇuhyahrayāṇa ||

Agni, who are freed from shame, by you we are made opulent; by you we are protected; may we, through your guidance, attain abundant food; cherisher of truth, destroy both (sorts of calumniators), those who are nigh, those who are far off, and in due course fulfil (our desires).

अया ते अग्ने समिधा विधेम प्रति स्तोमं शस्यमानं गृभाय । दहाशसो रक्षसः पाह्यस्मान्द्रुहो निदो मित्रमहो अवद्यात् ॥

ayā te agne samidhā vidhema prati stomaṃ śasyamānaṃ gṛbhāya | dahāśaso rakṣasaḥ pāhyasmāndruho nido mitramaho avadyāt ||

May we propitiate you, Agni, by this fuel; accept the praise that is recited by us; consume the unadoring rākṣasas; you are to be honoured by (your) friends, preserve us from the reproach of the oppressor and the reviler.
