[rv-4-5] • 15 श्लोकाः

वैश्वानराय मीऴ्हुषे सजोषाः कथा दाशेमाग्नये बृहद्भाः । अनूनेन बृहता वक्षथेनोप स्तभायदुपमिन्न रोधः ॥

vaiśvānarāya mīḻhuṣe sajoṣāḥ kathā dāśemāgnaye bṛhadbhāḥ | anūnena bṛhatā vakṣathenopa stabhāyadupaminna rodhaḥ ||

How may we present rejoicing (fit offering) to Agni the showerer (of benefits); to Vaiśvānara, he, who, bright with great lustre, sustains the heaven, with his entire vast and insupportable (bulk), as a pillar (sustains a roof).

मा निन्दत य इमां मह्यं रातिं देवो ददौ मर्त्याय स्वधावान् । पाकाय गृत्सो अमृतो विचेता वैश्वानरो नृतमो यह्वो अग्निः ॥

mā nindata ya imāṃ mahyaṃ rātiṃ devo dadau martyāya svadhāvān | pākāya gṛtso amṛto vicetā vaiśvānaro nṛtamo yahvo agniḥ ||

Reproach not the divine (Agni), who, accepting the oblation, has given this wealth to me, his mortal (worshipper) of mature (intellect); Agni, who is wise, immortal, discriminating, (who is) Vaiśvānara, chief conductor (of rites), the mighty.

साम द्विबर्हा महि तिग्मभृष्टिः सहस्ररेता वृषभस्तुविष्मान् । पदं न गोरपगूऴ्हं विविद्वानग्निर्मह्यं प्रेदु वोचन्मनीषाम् ॥

sāma dvibarhā mahi tigmabhṛṣṭiḥ sahasraretā vṛṣabhastuviṣmān | padaṃ na gorapagūḻhaṃ vividvānagnirmahyaṃ predu vocanmanīṣām ||

May Agni, filling both (the middling and most excellent condition), bright shining, of manifold vigour, the showerer of (benefits), the possessor of affluence, (who comprehends), by (his) wisdom the mysterious sacred hymn, as (they track) the footsteps of a (missing) cow, reveal (the sense) to me.

प्र ताँ अग्निर्बभसत्तिग्मजम्भस्तपिष्ठेन शोचिषा यः सुराधाः । प्र ये मिनन्ति वरुणस्य धाम प्रिया मित्रस्य चेततो ध्रुवाणि ॥

pra tā~ agnirbabhasattigmajambhastapiṣṭhena śociṣā yaḥ surādhāḥ | pra ye minanti varuṇasya dhāma priyā mitrasya cetato dhruvāṇi ||

May the sharp-toothed Agni, possessed of excellent wealth, consume with his fierce radiance those (adversaries) who injure the firm and valued glories of the sapient Varuṇa and Mitra.

अभ्रातरो न योषणो व्यन्तः पतिरिपो न जनयो दुरेवाः । पापासः सन्तो अनृता असत्या इदं पदमजनता गभीरम् ॥

abhrātaro na yoṣaṇo vyantaḥ patiripo na janayo durevāḥ | pāpāsaḥ santo anṛtā asatyā idaṃ padamajanatā gabhīram ||

Like women who have no brethren, going (about from their own to their father's house), women adverse to their lords going astray, so the wicked, false (in thought), false (in speech), they give birth to this deep abyss (of hell).

इदं मे अग्ने कियते पावकामिनते गुरुं भारं न मन्म । बृहद्दधाथ धृषता गभीरं यह्वं पृष्ठं प्रयसा सप्तधातु ॥

idaṃ me agne kiyate pāvakāminate guruṃ bhāraṃ na manma | bṛhaddadhātha dhṛṣatā gabhīraṃ yahvaṃ pṛṣṭhaṃ prayasā saptadhātu ||

Purifier, Agni, bestow on me, not neglecting your worship, this acceptable and vast (wealth), like a heavy load on a feeble (bearer), together with invigorating food; (wealth), secure, abundant, tangible, and consisting of the seven elements.

तमिन्न्वेव समना समानमभि क्रत्वा पुनती धीतिरश्याः । ससस्य चर्मन्नधि चारु पृश्नेरग्रे रुप आरुपितं जबारु ॥

taminnveva samanā samānamabhi kratvā punatī dhītiraśyāḥ | sasasya carmannadhi cāru pṛśneragre rupa ārupitaṃ jabāru ||

May our (self) purifying praise, suited to his glory, and accompanied by worship, quickly attain to that omniform (Vaiśvānara) whose swift-ascending brilliant (orb) is stationed on the east of the earth, to mount, like the sun, above this immoveable heaven.

प्रवाच्यं वचसः किं मे अस्य गुहा हितमुप निणिग्वदन्ति । यदुस्रियाणामप वारिव व्रन्पाति प्रियं रुपो अग्रं पदं वेः ॥

pravācyaṃ vacasaḥ kiṃ me asya guhā hitamupa niṇigvadanti | yadusriyāṇāmapa vāriva vranpāti priyaṃ rupo agraṃ padaṃ veḥ ||

What objection (can be offered) to this my assertion, that they affirm that the milk of the kine, which (the milkers) obtain like water, is plural ced in concealment (by Vaiśvānara), and cherishes the excellent and valued expanse of the wide earth.

इदमु त्यन्महि महामनीकं यदुस्रिया सचत पूर्व्यं गौः । ऋतस्य पदे अधि दीद्यानं गुहा रघुष्यद्रघुयद्विवेद ॥

idamu tyanmahi mahāmanīkaṃ yadusriyā sacata pūrvyaṃ gauḥ | ṛtasya pade adhi dīdyānaṃ guhā raghuṣyadraghuyadviveda ||

I recognize this adorable assemblage of the great (deities), which from of old the milk-shedding cow affects, shining above the region of water, (the firmament), in secret; swift gliding, swift moving.

अध द्युतानः पित्रोः सचासामनुत गुह्यं चारु पृश्नेः । मातुष्पदे परमे अन्ति षद्गोर्वृष्णः शोचिषः प्रयतस्य जिह्वा ॥

adha dyutānaḥ pitroḥ sacāsāmanuta guhyaṃ cāru pṛśneḥ | mātuṣpade parame anti ṣadgorvṛṣṇaḥ śociṣaḥ prayatasya jihvā ||

Then, radiant in association with the parents, (heaven and earth), he is awakened (to drink) the agreeable secretion of the cow, and the tongue of the assiduous (performer of holy rites), the resplendent showerer (of benefits), approaching the excellent station of the maternal (cow), seeks to drink the milk.

ऋतं वोचे नमसा पृच्छ्यमानस्तवाशसा जातवेदो यदीदम् । त्वमस्य क्षयसि यद्ध विश्वं दिवि यदु द्रविणं यत्पृथिव्याम् ॥

ṛtaṃ voce namasā pṛcchyamānastavāśasā jātavedo yadīdam | tvamasya kṣayasi yaddha viśvaṃ divi yadu draviṇaṃ yatpṛthivyām ||

Interrogated with respect, I declare the truth, that this (wealth is acquired), Jātavedas, by the praise of you; you rule over it, (over) all that (it may be), the wealth that is in heaven or on earth.

किं नो अस्य द्रविणं कद्ध रत्नं वि नो वोचो जातवेदश्चिकित्वान् । गुहाध्वनः परमं यन्नो अस्य रेकु पदं न निदाना अगन्म ॥

kiṃ no asya draviṇaṃ kaddha ratnaṃ vi no voco jātavedaścikitvān | guhādhvanaḥ paramaṃ yanno asya reku padaṃ na nidānā aganma ||

What is the value of this (wealth) to us? what is its advantage? inform us, Jātavedas, for you know; (tell us) what is the best (course) for us on this secret path, so that we may follow unreproached the direct road.

का मर्यादा वयुना कद्ध वाममच्छा गमेम रघवो न वाजम् । कदा नो देवीरमृतस्य पत्नीः सूरो वर्णेन ततनन्नुषासः ॥

kā maryādā vayunā kaddha vāmamacchā gamema raghavo na vājam | kadā no devīramṛtasya patnīḥ sūro varṇena tatanannuṣāsaḥ ||

Wha tis the limit, what are the objects, which is the desirable (end) to which we rush like swift (chargers) to the battle? when for us will the divine dawns, the brides of the immortal (sun), overspread (the world) with light.

अनिरेण वचसा फल्ग्वेन प्रतीत्येन कृधुनातृपासः । अधा ते अग्ने किमिहा वदन्त्यनायुधास आसता सचन्ताम् ॥

anireṇa vacasā phalgvena pratītyena kṛdhunātṛpāsaḥ | adhā te agne kimihā vadantyanāyudhāsa āsatā sacantām ||

(Men are) not satisfied by unproductive, frivolous, inconclusive, scanty speech; then what, Agni, do they here say to you? devoid of the implements (of worship), let them suffer from distress.

अस्य श्रिये समिधानस्य वृष्णो वसोरनीकं दम आ रुरोच । रुशद्वसानः सुदृशीकरूपः क्षितिर्न राया पुरुवारो अद्यौत् ॥

asya śriye samidhānasya vṛṣṇo vasoranīkaṃ dama ā ruroca | ruśadvasānaḥ sudṛśīkarūpaḥ kṣitirna rāyā puruvāro adyaut ||

For the prosperity of this (instrumental tutor of the rite), the host (of the flames) of the kindled (Agni), the showerer (of benefits), the giver of dwellings, has blazed in the hall (of sacrifice); clothed in radiance, beautiful in semblance, and glorified by many, he shines like a man with opulence.
