[rv-4-3] • 16 श्लोकाः

आ वो राजानमध्वरस्य रुद्रं होतारं सत्ययजं रोदस्योः । अग्निं पुरा तनयित्नोरचित्ताद्धिरण्यरूपमवसे कृणुध्वम् ॥

ā vo rājānamadhvarasya rudraṃ hotāraṃ satyayajaṃ rodasyoḥ | agniṃ purā tanayitnoracittāddhiraṇyarūpamavase kṛṇudhvam ||

Secure Agni, the king of sacrifice, the afflicter (of foes), the invoker (of the gods), the distributor of food through heaven and earth, the golden-formed, for your protection before (surprised by) sudden death.

अयं योनिश्चकृमा यं वयं ते जायेव पत्य उशती सुवासाः । अर्वाचीनः परिवीतो नि षीदेमा उ ते स्वपाक प्रतीचीः ॥

ayaṃ yoniścakṛmā yaṃ vayaṃ te jāyeva patya uśatī suvāsāḥ | arvācīnaḥ parivīto ni ṣīdemā u te svapāka pratīcīḥ ||

This is the altar which we have decorated for you, as a wife attached to her husband puts on elegant garments (to gratify him); maturer of good works, sit down in our presence invested (with radiance), while your flames incline towards you.

आशृण्वते अदृपिताय मन्म नृचक्षसे सुमृऴीकाय वेधः । देवाय शस्तिममृताय शंस ग्रावेव सोता मधुषुद्यमीऴे ॥

āśṛṇvate adṛpitāya manma nṛcakṣase sumṛḻīkāya vedhaḥ | devāya śastimamṛtāya śaṃsa grāveva sotā madhuṣudyamīḻe ||

Repeat, oḥ priest, the praise, the prayer, to the attentive, the affable Agni, the beholder of man, the giver of felicity, the divine, the immortal; to him whom the effuser of the libation, like the (bruising) stone, adores aloud.

त्वं चिन्नः शम्या अग्ने अस्या ऋतस्य बोध्यृतचित्स्वाधीः । कदा त उक्था सधमाद्यानि कदा भवन्ति सख्या गृहे ते ॥

tvaṃ cinnaḥ śamyā agne asyā ṛtasya bodhyṛtacitsvādhīḥ | kadā ta ukthā sadhamādyāni kadā bhavanti sakhyā gṛhe te ||

You Agni, preside over this our rite; do you who are cognizant of truth, and the author of good works, recognize this our adoration, whenever these exhilarating prayers (are addressed) to you whenever friendly relations with you are (established) in our dwelling.

कथा ह तद्वरुणाय त्वमग्ने कथा दिवे गर्हसे कन्न आगः । कथा मित्राय मीऴ्हुषे पृथिव्यै ब्रवः कदर्यम्णे कद्भगाय ॥

kathā ha tadvaruṇāya tvamagne kathā dive garhase kanna āgaḥ | kathā mitrāya mīḻhuṣe pṛthivyai bravaḥ kadaryamṇe kadbhagāya ||

Why, Agni, do you reproach us (for our sin) to Varuṇa, why to the heaven? what is our offence? why repeat it to the bountiful Mitra, to earth, to Aryaman, or to Bhaga?

कद्धिष्ण्यासु वृधसानो अग्ने कद्वाताय प्रतवसे शुभंये । परिज्मने नासत्याय क्षे ब्रवः कदग्ने रुद्राय नृघ्ने ॥

kaddhiṣṇyāsu vṛdhasāno agne kadvātāya pratavase śubhaṃye | parijmane nāsatyāya kṣe bravaḥ kadagne rudrāya nṛghne ||

Why repeat it when exalted in holy ceremonies? why tell it to the mighty, benevolent, circumambient, truthful wind? why, Agni, to earth, why to man-destroying Rudra?

कथा महे पुष्टिम्भराय पूष्णे कद्रुद्राय सुमखाय हविर्दे । कद्विष्णव उरुगायाय रेतो ब्रवः कदग्ने शरवे बृहत्यै ॥

kathā mahe puṣṭimbharāya pūṣṇe kadrudrāya sumakhāya havirde | kadviṣṇava urugāyāya reto bravaḥ kadagne śarave bṛhatyai ||

Why to the great and nutriment-conveying Pūṣan? why to Rudra, the object of worship, the giver of the oblation (to the gods)? why to the many-hymned Viṣṇu? why tell our sin to the extensive year?

कथा शर्धाय मरुतामृताय कथा सूरे बृहते पृच्छ्यमानः । प्रति ब्रवोऽदितये तुराय साधा दिवो जातवेदश्चिकित्वान् ॥

kathā śardhāya marutāmṛtāya kathā sūre bṛhate pṛcchyamānaḥ | prati bravo'ditaye turāya sādhā divo jātavedaścikitvān ||

Why tell it to the veracious company of the Maruts? why, even when asked, to the mighty sun? why repeat it to Aditi, or to the swift wind? fulfil, all-knowing Jātavedas, (the worship) of heaven.

ऋतेन ऋतं नियतमीऴ आ गोरामा सचा मधुमत्पक्वमग्ने । कृष्णा सती रुशता धासिनैषा जामर्येण पयसा पीपाय ॥

ṛtena ṛtaṃ niyatamīḻa ā gorāmā sacā madhumatpakvamagne | kṛṣṇā satī ruśatā dhāsinaiṣā jāmaryeṇa payasā pīpāya ||

I solicit, Agni, the milk of the cow, essential for the sacrifice; yet immature, (she possesses) the sweet and ripe (fluid); black though she be, yet with her white nutritious milk she maintains mankind in existence.

ऋतेन हि ष्मा वृषभश्चिदक्तः पुमाँ अग्निः पयसा पृष्ठ्येन । अस्पन्दमानो अचरद्वयोधा वृषा शुक्रं दुदुहे पृश्निरूधः ॥

ṛtena hi ṣmā vṛṣabhaścidaktaḥ pumā~ agniḥ payasā pṛṣṭhyena | aspandamāno acaradvayodhā vṛṣā śukraṃ duduhe pṛśnirūdhaḥ ||

The male Agni, the showerer (of benefits), has been sprinkled by the genitive ine sustaining milk; the giver of food proceeds unswerving (from his course), and the sun, the shedder of rain, has milked the white (fluid) of the udder (of the firmament).

ऋतेनाद्रिं व्यसन्भिदन्तः समङ्गिरसो नवन्त गोभिः । शुनं नरः परि षदन्नुषासमाविः स्वरभवज्जाते अग्नौ ॥

ṛtenādriṃ vyasanbhidantaḥ samaṅgiraso navanta gobhiḥ | śunaṃ naraḥ pari ṣadannuṣāsamāviḥ svarabhavajjāte agnau ||

By the sacrifice, the Aṅgirasas, rending the mountain asunder, have thrown it open, and returned with the cows; the leaders (of holy rites) have arrived happily at the dawn, and the sun was manifest as Agni was engendered.

ऋतेन देवीरमृता अमृक्ता अर्णोभिरापो मधुमद्भिरग्ने । वाजी न सर्गेषु प्रस्तुभानः प्र सदमित्स्रवितवे दधन्युः ॥

ṛtena devīramṛtā amṛktā arṇobhirāpo madhumadbhiragne | vājī na sargeṣu prastubhānaḥ pra sadamitsravitave dadhanyuḥ ||

By sacrifice, Agni, the divine rivers, immortal, unobstructed, continue perpetually to flow with sweet waters, like a horse that is being urged in his speed.

मा कस्य यक्षं सदमिद्धुरो गा मा वेशस्य प्रमिनतो मापेः । मा भ्रातुरग्ने अनृजोॠणं वेर्मा सख्युर्दक्षं रिपोर्भुजेम ॥

mā kasya yakṣaṃ sadamiddhuro gā mā veśasya praminato māpeḥ | mā bhrāturagne anṛjoṝṇaṃ vermā sakhyurdakṣaṃ riporbhujema ||

Go not ever, Agni, to the sacrifice of any one who injures us; nor to that of a malevolent neighbour, nor to that of an (unnatural) relation; accept not the due (oblation) from an insincere brother; let us not derive enjoyment from the enemy of a friend.

रक्षा णो अग्ने तव रक्षणेभी रारक्षाणः सुमख प्रीणानः । प्रति ष्फुर वि रुज वीड्वंहो जहि रक्षो महि चिद्वावृधानम् ॥

rakṣā ṇo agne tava rakṣaṇebhī rārakṣāṇaḥ sumakha prīṇānaḥ | prati ṣphura vi ruja vīḍvaṃho jahi rakṣo mahi cidvāvṛdhānam ||

Agni, worthily worshipped, counservator, conciliated (by our offerings), protect us with your protections; enlighten us; entirely extirpate our sin; overcome the great and exulting rākṣasas.

एभिर्भव सुमना अग्ने अर्कैरिमान्त्स्पृश मन्मभिः शूर वाजान् । उत ब्रह्माण्यङ्गिरो जुषस्व सं ते शस्तिर्देववाता जरेत ॥

ebhirbhava sumanā agne arkairimāntspṛśa manmabhiḥ śūra vājān | uta brahmāṇyaṅgiro juṣasva saṃ te śastirdevavātā jareta ||

Be propitiated, Agni, by these hymns, accept, hero, these (sacrificial) viands (presented) with praises; be plural ased, Aṅgiras, by our prayers; may the adoration addressed to the gods exalt you. (Taittirīya Samhitā 10.62.5)

एता विश्वा विदुषे तुभ्यं वेधो नीथान्यग्ने निण्या वचांसि । निवचना कवये काव्यान्यशंसिषं मतिभिर्विप्र उक्थैः ॥

etā viśvā viduṣe tubhyaṃ vedho nīthānyagne niṇyā vacāṃsi | nivacanā kavaye kāvyānyaśaṃsiṣaṃ matibhirvipra ukthaiḥ ||

Agni, creator, to you who are wise, acquainted with the past, I address, oḥ sage, these soliciting mysterious words, (these) ever-to-be-recited poems, together with praises and prayers.
