[rv-4-20] • 11 श्लोकाः

आ न इन्द्रो दूरादा न आसादभिष्टिकृदवसे यासदुग्रः । ओजिष्ठेभिर्नृपतिर्वज्रबाहुः संगे समत्सु तुर्वणिः पृतन्यून् ॥

ā na indro dūrādā na āsādabhiṣṭikṛdavase yāsadugraḥ | ojiṣṭhebhirnṛpatirvajrabāhuḥ saṃge samatsu turvaṇiḥ pṛtanyūn ||

May the illustrious Indra, the granter of desires, come to us, whether from afar or nigh, for our protection; he who is the lord of men, armed with the thunderbolt, overcoming his foes in conflict and in combats, (attended) by the most illustrious (Maruts).

आ न इन्द्रो हरिभिर्यात्वच्छार्वाचीनोऽवसे राधसे च । तिष्ठाति वज्री मघवा विरप्शीमं यज्ञमनु नो वाजसातौ ॥

ā na indro haribhiryātvacchārvācīno'vase rādhase ca | tiṣṭhāti vajrī maghavā virapśīmaṃ yajñamanu no vājasātau ||

May Indra, looking down upon us, come with his steeds to our presence for our protection and enrichment; may the mighty thunderer, the possessor of wealth, (aiding us) in battle, be present at this our sacrifice.

इमं यज्ञं त्वमस्माकमिन्द्र पुरो दधत्सनिष्यसि क्रतुं नः । श्वघ्नीव वज्रिन्त्सनये धनानां त्वया वयमर्य आजिं जयेम ॥

imaṃ yajñaṃ tvamasmākamindra puro dadhatsaniṣyasi kratuṃ naḥ | śvaghnīva vajrintsanaye dhanānāṃ tvayā vayamarya ājiṃ jayema ||

You, Indra, plural cing us before you, shall receive this sacrifice, our holy offering; and as the huntsman (kills his game), may we, your worshippers, holder of the thunderbolt, for the acquisition of riches through you to be victorious in battle.

उशन्नु षु णः सुमना उपाके सोमस्य नु सुषुतस्य स्वधावः । पा इन्द्र प्रतिभृतस्य मध्वः समन्धसा ममदः पृष्ठ्येन ॥

uśannu ṣu ṇaḥ sumanā upāke somasya nu suṣutasya svadhāvaḥ | pā indra pratibhṛtasya madhvaḥ samandhasā mamadaḥ pṛṣṭhyena ||

Indra, the giver of food, be near to us, favourably disposed; and anxious for our (good), drink of the effused, prepared, exhilarating Soma, and be plural ased by the (sacrificial) food (offered with the noon-day hymn.

वि यो ररप्श ऋषिभिर्नवेभिर्वृक्षो न पक्वः सृण्यो न जेता । मर्यो न योषामभि मन्यमानोऽच्छा विवक्मि पुरुहूतमिन्द्रम् ॥

vi yo rarapśa ṛṣibhirnavebhirvṛkṣo na pakvaḥ sṛṇyo na jetā | maryo na yoṣāmabhi manyamāno'cchā vivakmi puruhūtamindram ||

Like a man boasting of his wife, I glorify that Indra who is invoked of many, who is hymned by recent sages (who is) like a tree with ripe fruit, like a victorious (warrior), skilful in arms.

गिरिर्न यः स्वतवाँ ऋष्व इन्द्रः सनादेव सहसे जात उग्रः । आदर्ता वज्रं स्थविरं न भीम उद्नेव कोशं वसुना न्यृष्टम् ॥

girirna yaḥ svatavā~ ṛṣva indraḥ sanādeva sahase jāta ugraḥ | ādartā vajraṃ sthaviraṃ na bhīma udneva kośaṃ vasunā nyṛṣṭam ||

He who is vast and self-sustained like a mountain, the radiant and formidable Indra, born of old for the destruction (of the foes of the gods), the wielder of the ancient thunderbolt, charged with splendour, like a jar (filled) with water.

न यस्य वर्ता जनुषा न्वस्ति न राधस आमरीता मघस्य । उद्वावृषाणस्तविषीव उग्रास्मभ्यं दद्धि पुरुहूत रायः ॥

na yasya vartā januṣā nvasti na rādhasa āmarītā maghasya | udvāvṛṣāṇastaviṣīva ugrāsmabhyaṃ daddhi puruhūta rāyaḥ ||

Of whom there is no opposer by (reason of) his birth nor any destroyer of the wealth that accomplishes (pious works); powerful and resplendent (Indra), the invoked of many, do you who are the showerer (of benefits) bestow upon us riches.

ईक्षे रायः क्षयस्य चर्षणीनामुत व्रजमपवर्तासि गोनाम् । शिक्षानरः समिथेषु प्रहावान्वस्वो राशिमभिनेतासि भूरिम् ॥

īkṣe rāyaḥ kṣayasya carṣaṇīnāmuta vrajamapavartāsi gonām | śikṣānaraḥ samitheṣu prahāvānvasvo rāśimabhinetāsi bhūrim ||

You rule over the riches and the dwellings of men; you are the rescuer of the herd of cattle; you are the giver of the instrumental uction, the smiter in battles, and the distributor of great heaps of riches.

कया तच्छृण्वे शच्या शचिष्ठो यया कृणोति मुहु का चिदृष्वः । पुरु दाशुषे विचयिष्ठो अंहोऽथा दधाति द्रविणं जरित्रे ॥

kayā tacchṛṇve śacyā śaciṣṭho yayā kṛṇoti muhu kā cidṛṣvaḥ | puru dāśuṣe vicayiṣṭho aṃho'thā dadhāti draviṇaṃ jaritre ||

By what wisdom is he who is most wise renowned by that wherewith the mighty Indra repeatedly does (great things); he is the especial effacer of the manifold sin of the worshipper, and bestows wealth upon his adorer.

मा नो मर्धीरा भरा दद्धि तन्नः प्र दाशुषे दातवे भूरि यत्ते । नव्ये देष्णे शस्ते अस्मिन्त उक्थे प्र ब्रवाम वयमिन्द्र स्तुवन्तः ॥

mā no mardhīrā bharā daddhi tannaḥ pra dāśuṣe dātave bhūri yatte | navye deṣṇe śaste asminta ukthe pra bravāma vayamindra stuvantaḥ ||

Harm us not, but cherish us, Indra; bestow upon us that abundant wealth which it is yours to give to the donor (of the oblation); praising you, we celebrate you at this sacred rite, which is new and excellent, and (at which the oblation) is proper to be presented.

नू ष्टुत इन्द्र नू गृणान इषं जरित्रे नद्यो न पीपेः । अकारि ते हरिवो ब्रह्म नव्यं धिया स्याम रथ्यः सदासाः ॥

nū ṣṭuta indra nū gṛṇāna iṣaṃ jaritre nadyo na pīpeḥ | akāri te harivo brahma navyaṃ dhiyā syāma rathyaḥ sadāsāḥ ||

Glorified (in the past) glorified, Indra, at present, satisfy your worshipper with food, as rivers (are filled with water); lord of horses, a new hymn has been made for you; may we, possessed of chariots, be ever delighted in your praise.
