[rv-4-17] • 21 श्लोकाः

त्वं महाँ इन्द्र तुभ्यं ह क्षा अनु क्षत्रं मंहना मन्यत द्यौः । त्वं वृत्रं शवसा जघन्वान्त्सृजः सिन्धूँरहिना जग्रसानान् ॥

tvaṃ mahā~ indra tubhyaṃ ha kṣā anu kṣatraṃ maṃhanā manyata dyauḥ | tvaṃ vṛtraṃ śavasā jaghanvāntsṛjaḥ sindhū~rahinā jagrasānān ||

You, Indra, are mighty; the vast earth confesses to you (your) strength, as does the heaven; you have slain Vṛtra by your vigour, you have set free the rivers arrested by Ahi.

तव त्विषो जनिमन्रेजत द्यौ रेजद्भूमिर्भियसा स्वस्य मन्योः । ऋघायन्त सुभ्वः पर्वतास आर्दन्धन्वानि सरयन्त आपः ॥

tava tviṣo janimanrejata dyau rejadbhūmirbhiyasā svasya manyoḥ | ṛghāyanta subhvaḥ parvatāsa ārdandhanvāni sarayanta āpaḥ ||

At the birth of you who are resplendent, trembled the heaven (and) trembled the earth through fear of your wrath; the mighty clouds were confined; they destroyed (the distress of drought), spreading the waters over the dry plural ces.

भिनद्गिरिं शवसा वज्रमिष्णन्नाविष्कृण्वानः सहसान ओजः । वधीद्वृत्रं वज्रेण मन्दसानः सरन्नापो जवसा हतवृष्णीः ॥

bhinadgiriṃ śavasā vajramiṣṇannāviṣkṛṇvānaḥ sahasāna ojaḥ | vadhīdvṛtraṃ vajreṇa mandasānaḥ sarannāpo javasā hatavṛṣṇīḥ ||

The subduer of foes, manifesting his energy and hurling his thunderbolt, shattered the mountain by his strength; he slew Vṛtra with the thunderbolt, exulting, and the waters whose obstructor was destroyed rushed forth with rapidity.

सुवीरस्ते जनिता मन्यत द्यौरिन्द्रस्य कर्ता स्वपस्तमो भूत् । य ईं जजान स्वर्यं सुवज्रमनपच्युतं सदसो न भूम ॥

suvīraste janitā manyata dyaurindrasya kartā svapastamo bhūt | ya īṃ jajāna svaryaṃ suvajramanapacyutaṃ sadaso na bhūma ||

Heaven, your progenitor, conceived (I have obtained) a worthy son; the maker of Indra was the accomplisher of a most excellent work; he who begot the adorable (Indra), armed with the thunderbolt, irremovable from his station, and endowed with greatness.

य एक इच्च्यावयति प्र भूमा राजा कृष्टीनां पुरुहूत इन्द्रः । सत्यमेनमनु विश्वे मदन्ति रातिं देवस्य गृणतो मघोनः ॥

ya eka iccyāvayati pra bhūmā rājā kṛṣṭīnāṃ puruhūta indraḥ | satyamenamanu viśve madanti rātiṃ devasya gṛṇato maghonaḥ ||

All men, praising the munificence of the divine Maghavan, verily glorify him who alone casts downmany, Indra, the king of men, the adored of many.

सत्रा सोमा अभवन्नस्य विश्वे सत्रा मदासो बृहतो मदिष्ठाः । सत्राभवो वसुपतिर्वसूनां दत्रे विश्वा अधिथा इन्द्र कृष्टीः ॥

satrā somā abhavannasya viśve satrā madāso bṛhato madiṣṭhāḥ | satrābhavo vasupatirvasūnāṃ datre viśvā adhithā indra kṛṣṭīḥ ||

Truly are all libations his, the inebriating draughts are truly most exhilarating to the mighty Indra; truly are you the lord of wealth, of (all sorts of) treasures; you, Indra, support all people by the gift (of riches).

त्वमध प्रथमं जायमानोऽमे विश्वा अधिथा इन्द्र कृष्टीः । त्वं प्रति प्रवत आशयानमहिं वज्रेण मघवन्वि वृश्चः ॥

tvamadha prathamaṃ jāyamāno'me viśvā adhithā indra kṛṣṭīḥ | tvaṃ prati pravata āśayānamahiṃ vajreṇa maghavanvi vṛścaḥ ||

[7-8] (We praise) the slayer of many foes, the courageous, the discomfiter (of enemies), the great, the unbounded, the showerer (of benefits), the wielder of the bright thunderbolt, him who is the destroyer of Vṛtra, the bestower of food, the giver of wealth, Maghavan, the possessor of riches.

सत्राहणं दाधृषिं तुम्रमिन्द्रं महामपारं वृषभं सुवज्रम् । हन्ता यो वृत्रं सनितोत वाजं दाता मघानि मघवा सुराधाः ॥

satrāhaṇaṃ dādhṛṣiṃ tumramindraṃ mahāmapāraṃ vṛṣabhaṃ suvajram | hantā yo vṛtraṃ sanitota vājaṃ dātā maghāni maghavā surādhāḥ ||

Details:

अयं वृतश्चातयते समीचीर्य आजिषु मघवा शृण्व एकः । अयं वाजं भरति यं सनोत्यस्य प्रियासः सख्ये स्याम ॥

ayaṃ vṛtaścātayate samīcīrya ājiṣu maghavā śṛṇva ekaḥ | ayaṃ vājaṃ bharati yaṃ sanotyasya priyāsaḥ sakhye syāma ||

This Maghavan, who destroys assembled hosts, is he who is renowned as chief in battles; he brings the food which he bestows (upon the worshipper); may we be held dear in his friendship.

अयं शृण्वे अध जयन्नुत घ्नन्नयमुत प्र कृणुते युधा गाः । यदा सत्यं कृणुते मन्युमिन्द्रो विश्वं दृऴ्हं भयत एजदस्मात् ॥

ayaṃ śṛṇve adha jayannuta ghnannayamuta pra kṛṇute yudhā gāḥ | yadā satyaṃ kṛṇute manyumindro viśvaṃ dṛḻhaṃ bhayata ejadasmāt ||

This (Indra), is renowned, whether conquering or slaying (his foes), or whether in conflict he recovers the cattle; when Indra truly entertains anger all that is stationary or moveable is in fear of him.

समिन्द्रो गा अजयत्सं हिरण्या समश्विया मघवा यो ह पूर्वीः । एभिर्नृभिर्नृतमो अस्य शाकै रायो विभक्ता सम्भरश्च वस्वः ॥

samindro gā ajayatsaṃ hiraṇyā samaśviyā maghavā yo ha pūrvīḥ | ebhirnṛbhirnṛtamo asya śākai rāyo vibhaktā sambharaśca vasvaḥ ||

Indra, the lord of opulence, who has overcomemany (enemies), has completely won (their) cattle, (their) gold, (their) horses; chief leader by his energies, praised by these his worshippers, he is the distributor of riches, the bestower of wealth.

कियत्स्विदिन्द्रो अध्येति मातुः कियत्पितुर्जनितुर्यो जजान । यो अस्य शुष्मं मुहुकैरियर्ति वातो न जूतः स्तनयद्भिरभ्रैः ॥

kiyatsvidindro adhyeti mātuḥ kiyatpiturjanituryo jajāna | yo asya śuṣmaṃ muhukairiyarti vāto na jūtaḥ stanayadbhirabhraiḥ ||

Some portion (of his strength) Indra derives from his mother, some portion from his father; he who, though his progenitor, has begotten (the world), and animates its vigour repeatedly, as the wind is driven by thundering clouds.

क्षियन्तं त्वमक्षियन्तं कृणोतीयर्ति रेणुं मघवा समोहम् । विभञ्जनुरशनिमाँ इव द्यौरुत स्तोतारं मघवा वसौ धात् ॥

kṣiyantaṃ tvamakṣiyantaṃ kṛṇotīyarti reṇuṃ maghavā samoham | vibhañjanuraśanimā~ iva dyauruta stotāraṃ maghavā vasau dhāt ||

You are the Maghavan who makes one man destitute, another prosperous, who (scatters from his worshipper) the accusative ulated dust (of sin), the destroyer (of foes), like the heaven with the thunderbolt, Maghavan conducts his worshipper to wealth.

अयं चक्रमिषणत्सूर्यस्य न्येतशं रीरमत्ससृमाणम् । आ कृष्ण ईं जुहुराणो जिघर्ति त्वचो बुध्ने रजसो अस्य योनौ ॥

ayaṃ cakramiṣaṇatsūryasya nyetaśaṃ rīramatsasṛmāṇam | ā kṛṣṇa īṃ juhurāṇo jigharti tvaco budhne rajaso asya yonau ||

He has hurled the wheel (of the chariot) of the sun, and has stopped Etaśa going forth to (battle); the dark undulating cloud bedews him, (staying) at the root of radiance in the regions of its waters.

असिक्न्यां यजमानो न होता ॥

asiknyāṃ yajamāno na hotā ||

As the sacrificer (pours the oblation) at night upon the fire.

गव्यन्त इन्द्रं सख्याय विप्रा अश्वायन्तो वृषणं वाजयन्तः । जनीयन्तो जनिदामक्षितोतिमा च्यावयामोऽवते न कोशम् ॥

gavyanta indraṃ sakhyāya viprā aśvāyanto vṛṣaṇaṃ vājayantaḥ | janīyanto janidāmakṣitotimā cyāvayāmo'vate na kośam ||

May we (who are) wishing for cattle, for horses, for food, for wives, through his friendship induce Indra, the showerer (of benefits), the giver of wives, the unwearied granter of protection, to come down, as a bucket (is lowered) into a well.

त्राता नो बोधि ददृशान आपिरभिख्याता मर्डिता सोम्यानाम् । सखा पिता पितृतमः पितॄणां कर्तेमु लोकमुशते वयोधाः ॥

trātā no bodhi dadṛśāna āpirabhikhyātā marḍitā somyānām | sakhā pitā pitṛtamaḥ pitṝṇāṃ kartemu lokamuśate vayodhāḥ ||

Be our preserver, you who are looking (benevolently upon) all; a kinsman (to us); a supervisor (of all things), a bestower of felicity on those who are worthy (to offer) libations; a friend, a protector, a defender in the highest degree among defenders, a creator; (be you, who bestows) the world of heaven upon him who desires it, the giver to us of food.

सखीयतामविता बोधि सखा गृणान इन्द्र स्तुवते वयो धाः । वयं ह्या ते चकृमा सबाध आभिः शमीभिर्महयन्त इन्द्र ॥

sakhīyatāmavitā bodhi sakhā gṛṇāna indra stuvate vayo dhāḥ | vayaṃ hyā te cakṛmā sabādha ābhiḥ śamībhirmahayanta indra ||

Regard yourself as a protector of those who desire your friendship; be a friend deserving of commendation; grant, Indra, food to him who praises (you); suffering difficulties, we make our suppications to you, worshipping you with these holy rites.

स्तुत इन्द्रो मघवा यद्ध वृत्रा भूरीण्येको अप्रतीनि हन्ति । अस्य प्रियो जरिता यस्य शर्मन्नकिर्देवा वारयन्ते न मर्ताः ॥

stuta indro maghavā yaddha vṛtrā bhūrīṇyeko apratīni hanti | asya priyo jaritā yasya śarmannakirdevā vārayante na martāḥ ||

When Indra, the possessor of opulence, is glorified, he singly destroys many unyielding foes; the worshipper is dear to him (who relies) on his protection, and neither gods nor men molest him.

एवा न इन्द्रो मघवा विरप्शी करत्सत्या चर्षणीधृदनर्वा । त्वं राजा जनुषां धेह्यस्मे अधि श्रवो माहिनं यज्जरित्रे ॥

evā na indro maghavā virapśī karatsatyā carṣaṇīdhṛdanarvā | tvaṃ rājā januṣāṃ dhehyasme adhi śravo māhinaṃ yajjaritre ||

The many-voiced Indra, the possessor of opulence, the supporter of men, the irresistible bestows upon us, when praised by us, assured (rewards); you, (Indra), are the king of men; grant to us abundantly that great fame which (is due) to (your) worshipper.

नू ष्टुत इन्द्र नू गृणान इषं जरित्रे नद्यो न पीपेः । अकारि ते हरिवो ब्रह्म नव्यं धिया स्याम रथ्यः सदासाः ॥

nū ṣṭuta indra nū gṛṇāna iṣaṃ jaritre nadyo na pīpeḥ | akāri te harivo brahma navyaṃ dhiyā syāma rathyaḥ sadāsāḥ ||

Glorified (in the past), glorified, Indra, at present satisfy your worshipper with food, as rivers (are filled with water); lord of horses, a new hymn has been made for you; may we, possessed of chariots, be ever diligent in your praise.
