[rv-4-16] • 21 श्लोकाः

आ सत्यो यातु मघवाँ ऋजीषी द्रवन्त्वस्य हरय उप नः । तस्मा इदन्धः सुषुमा सुदक्षमिहाभिपित्वं करते गृणानः ॥

ā satyo yātu maghavā~ ṛjīṣī dravantvasya haraya upa naḥ | tasmā idandhaḥ suṣumā sudakṣamihābhipitvaṃ karate gṛṇānaḥ ||

May the truthful Maghavan the accepter of the spiritless Soma, come to us; may his horses hasten to us; to him we offer this sacrifice, the very potent beverage; may he grant the fulfilment of our desires.

अव स्य शूराध्वनो नान्तेऽस्मिन्नो अद्य सवने मन्दध्यै । शंसात्युक्थमुशनेव वेधाश्चिकितुषे असुर्याय मन्म ॥

ava sya śūrādhvano nānte'sminno adya savane mandadhyai | śaṃsātyukthamuśaneva vedhāścikituṣe asuryāya manma ||

Hero, Indra, set us free today to give you exhilaration at this sacrifice, as (they let loose a horse) at the end of the road; may the worshipper, like Uśanās, repeat an acceptable prayer to you, the knower (of all things), the destroyer of the asuras.

कविर्न निण्यं विदथानि साधन्वृषा यत्सेकं विपिपानो अर्चात् । दिव इत्था जीजनत्सप्त कारूनह्ना चिच्चक्रुर्वयुना गृणन्तः ॥

kavirna niṇyaṃ vidathāni sādhanvṛṣā yatsekaṃ vipipāno arcāt | diva itthā jījanatsapta kārūnahnā ciccakrurvayunā gṛṇantaḥ ||

Like a sage (knowing) what is hidden, and fulfilling sacred rites, so the showerer (of benefits), quaffing copiously the effused (libation), exults (in the draught), and he genitive rates the seven efficient (rays) from heaven, which, being glorified, have made (manifest) the objects of (human) perception by day.

स्वर्यद्वेदि सुदृशीकमर्कैर्महि ज्योती रुरुचुर्यद्ध वस्तोः । अन्धा तमांसि दुधिता विचक्षे नृभ्यश्चकार नृतमो अभिष्टौ ॥

svaryadvedi sudṛśīkamarkairmahi jyotī rurucuryaddha vastoḥ | andhā tamāṃsi dudhitā vicakṣe nṛbhyaścakāra nṛtamo abhiṣṭau ||

When the vast luminous heaven manifested by the rays (of light) is displayed, then are (the deities) resplendent according to (their heavenly) abode; the chief of leaders, (Indra), in his approach has scattered the thick glooms so that men may see.

ववक्ष इन्द्रो अमितमृजीष्युभे आ पप्रौ रोदसी महित्वा । अतश्चिदस्य महिमा वि रेच्यभि यो विश्वा भुवना बभूव ॥

vavakṣa indro amitamṛjīṣyubhe ā paprau rodasī mahitvā | ataścidasya mahimā vi recyabhi yo viśvā bhuvanā babhūva ||

Indra, as the accepter of the stale Soma, sustains infinite greatness, and has filled both heaven and earth by his magnitude; therefore has the vastness of him who has surpassed all the regions, exceeded (the world).

विश्वानि शक्रो नर्याणि विद्वानपो रिरेच सखिभिर्निकामैः । अश्मानं चिद्ये बिभिदुर्वचोभिर्व्रजं गोमन्तमुशिजो वि वव्रुः ॥

viśvāni śakro naryāṇi vidvānapo rireca sakhibhirnikāmaiḥ | aśmānaṃ cidye bibhidurvacobhirvrajaṃ gomantamuśijo vi vavruḥ ||

Knowing all things profitable for men, Śakra has, with his willing friends (the Maruts), sent forth the waters, for they, with (loud) shouts, divided the clouds, and, desiring (to fulfil) their office, set open the pasturage of the cows (of the Aṅgirasas).

अपो वृत्रं वव्रिवांसं पराहन्प्रावत्ते वज्रं पृथिवी सचेताः । प्रार्णांसि समुद्रियाण्यैनोः पतिर्भवञ्छवसा शूर धृष्णो ॥

apo vṛtraṃ vavrivāṃsaṃ parāhanprāvatte vajraṃ pṛthivī sacetāḥ | prārṇāṃsi samudriyāṇyainoḥ patirbhavañchavasā śūra dhṛṣṇo ||

Your protecting thunderbolt has slain Vṛtra obstructing the (issue of the waters), the conscious earth (co-operating) with you; valiant hero, preserver (of the regions), send down by your strength the waters of the firmament.

अपो यदद्रिं पुरुहूत दर्दराविर्भुवत्सरमा पूर्व्यं ते । स नो नेता वाजमा दर्षि भूरिं गोत्रा रुजन्नङ्गिरोभिर्गृणानः ॥

apo yadadriṃ puruhūta dardarāvirbhuvatsaramā pūrvyaṃ te | sa no netā vājamā darṣi bhūriṃ gotrā rujannaṅgirobhirgṛṇānaḥ ||

Invoked of many, when you had divided the cloud for (the escape of) the waters, Saramā appeared before you; and you, the bringer of abundant food, have shown us favour, dividing the clouds and glorified by the Aṅgirasas.

अच्छा कविं नृमणो गा अभिष्टौ स्वर्षाता मघवन्नाधमानम् । ऊतिभिस्तमिषणो द्युम्नहूतौ नि मायावानब्रह्मा दस्युरर्त ॥

acchā kaviṃ nṛmaṇo gā abhiṣṭau svarṣātā maghavannādhamānam | ūtibhistamiṣaṇo dyumnahūtau ni māyāvānabrahmā dasyurarta ||

Maghavan, who are honoured by men, you have repaired to the presence of the sage for (the sake of) bestowing (upon him) wealth, and when soliciting (you) in his need (for aid); defending (him) with your protection, the guileful, impious Dasyu has been destroyed in the contest for the spoil.

आ दस्युघ्ना मनसा याह्यस्तं भुवत्ते कुत्सः सख्ये निकामः । स्वे योनौ नि षदतं सरूपा वि वां चिकित्सदृतचिद्ध नारी ॥

ā dasyughnā manasā yāhyastaṃ bhuvatte kutsaḥ sakhye nikāmaḥ | sve yonau ni ṣadataṃ sarūpā vi vāṃ cikitsadṛtaciddha nārī ||

With a mind resolved on killing the Dasyu, you came (to his dwelling), and Kutsa was eager for your friendship; now have you two alighted in his, (Indra's), habitation, and being entirely similar in form the truthful woman has been perplexed (to discriminate between you).

यासि कुत्सेन सरथमवस्युस्तोदो वातस्य हर्योरीशानः । ऋज्रा वाजं न गध्यं युयूषन्कविर्यदहन्पार्याय भूषात् ॥

yāsi kutsena sarathamavasyustodo vātasya haryorīśānaḥ | ṛjrā vājaṃ na gadhyaṃ yuyūṣankaviryadahanpāryāya bhūṣāt ||

You go with Kutsa in the same chariot, determined to defend him; (you) who are the tormentor (of foes), the lord of horses (of the speech) of the wind; on the same day wherein, yoking (to the car) the straight-going steeds, as if to receive food, the sage (Kutsa) has been enabled to cross over (the sea) of calamity.

कुत्साय शुष्णमशुषं नि बर्हीः प्रपित्वे अह्नः कुयवं सहस्रा । सद्यो दस्यून्प्र मृण कुत्स्येन प्र सूरश्चक्रं वृहतादभीके ॥

kutsāya śuṣṇamaśuṣaṃ ni barhīḥ prapitve ahnaḥ kuyavaṃ sahasrā | sadyo dasyūnpra mṛṇa kutsyena pra sūraścakraṃ vṛhatādabhīke ||

For Kutsa, you have slain the unhappy Śuṣṇa and in the forepart of the day, attended by thousands (you have slain) Kuyava with the thunderbolt; you have swiftly destroyed the Dasyus, and you have cut them to pieces in the battle, with the wheel (of the chariot of) the sun.

त्वं पिप्रुं मृगयं शूशुवांसमृजिश्वने वैदथिनाय रन्धीः । पञ्चाशत्कृष्णा नि वपः सहस्रात्कं न पुरो जरिमा वि दर्दः ॥

tvaṃ pipruṃ mṛgayaṃ śūśuvāṃsamṛjiśvane vaidathināya randhīḥ | pañcāśatkṛṣṇā ni vapaḥ sahasrātkaṃ na puro jarimā vi dardaḥ ||

You have subjugated Pipru and the mighty Mṛgayā for the sake of Ṛjiṣvan, the son of Vidathin, you have slain the fifty thousand Kṛṣṇas; and, as old age (destroys) life, you have demolished the cities (of Śambara).

सूर उपाके तन्वं दधानो वि यत्ते चेत्यमृतस्य वर्पः । मृगो न हस्ती तविषीमुषाणः सिंहो न भीम आयुधानि बिभ्रत् ॥

sūra upāke tanvaṃ dadhāno vi yatte cetyamṛtasya varpaḥ | mṛgo na hastī taviṣīmuṣāṇaḥ siṃho na bhīma āyudhāni bibhrat ||

While having (your) person n in the proximity of the sun, your form becomes redolent of ambrosia, and you are like the deer-like elephant, consuming the strength (of the strong), and are like a terrible lion when wielding your weapons.

इन्द्रं कामा वसूयन्तो अग्मन्त्स्वर्मीऴ्हे न सवने चकानाः । श्रवस्यवः शशमानास उक्थैरोको न रण्वा सुदृशीव पुष्टिः ॥

indraṃ kāmā vasūyanto agmantsvarmīḻhe na savane cakānāḥ | śravasyavaḥ śaśamānāsa ukthairoko na raṇvā sudṛśīva puṣṭiḥ ||

Relying (upon Indra) for protection, and desirous of riches, (pious men) repair to him soliciting his presence in the sacrifice, as if in the battle, asking for food, celebrating his praise with hymns, for he is the refuge (of his worshippers), and resembles the grateful and lovely (goddess) of nutrition.

तमिद्व इन्द्रं सुहवं हुवेम यस्ता चकार नर्या पुरूणि । यो मावते जरित्रे गध्यं चिन्मक्षू वाजं भरति स्पार्हराधाः ॥

tamidva indraṃ suhavaṃ huvema yastā cakāra naryā purūṇi | yo māvate jaritre gadhyaṃ cinmakṣū vājaṃ bharati spārharādhāḥ ||

Let us invoke that gracious Indra who has made so many things good for man; who, bestowing enviable opulence, quickly brings acceptable food to a worshipper like me.

तिग्मा यदन्तरशनिः पताति कस्मिञ्चिच्छूर मुहुके जनानाम् । घोरा यदर्य समृतिर्भवात्यध स्मा नस्तन्वो बोधि गोपाः ॥

tigmā yadantaraśaniḥ patāti kasmiñcicchūra muhuke janānām | ghorā yadarya samṛtirbhavātyadha smā nastanvo bodhi gopāḥ ||

Hero, indra, when in any conflict of men the sharp thunderbolt falls in the midst (of them), and when, lord there is a terrible battle, then the defender of our person ns is made known.

भुवोऽविता वामदेवस्य धीनां भुवः सखावृको वाजसातौ । त्वामनु प्रमतिमा जगन्मोरुशंसो जरित्रे विश्वध स्याः ॥

bhuvo'vitā vāmadevasya dhīnāṃ bhuvaḥ sakhāvṛko vājasātau | tvāmanu pramatimā jaganmoruśaṃso jaritre viśvadha syāḥ ||

Be you the protector of the pious acts of Vāmadeva; be you in battle an unfailing friend; we come to you, eminent in wisdom; may you be ever benignant to your praiser.

एभिर्नृभिरिन्द्र त्वायुभिष्ट्वा मघवद्भिर्मघवन्विश्व आजौ । द्यावो न द्युम्नैरभि सन्तो अर्यः क्षपो मदेम शरदश्च पूर्वीः ॥

ebhirnṛbhirindra tvāyubhiṣṭvā maghavadbhirmaghavanviśva ājau | dyāvo na dyumnairabhi santo aryaḥ kṣapo madema śaradaśca pūrvīḥ ||

In every battle, Maghavan, may we, along with those men who trust in you and offer rich gifts, like those who are resplendent with riches, triumphing over their foes, glorify you many nights and years.

एवेदिन्द्राय वृषभाय वृष्णे ब्रह्माकर्म भृगवो न रथम् । नू चिद्यथा नः सख्या वियोषदसन्न उग्रोऽविता तनूपाः ॥

evedindrāya vṛṣabhāya vṛṣṇe brahmākarma bhṛgavo na ratham | nū cidyathā naḥ sakhyā viyoṣadasanna ugro'vitā tanūpāḥ ||

Therefore we offer to the vigorous Indra, the showerer (of benefits), holy adoration, that he may never withdraw his friendly (actions) from us, and that he may be our powerful protector, the defender of (our) person ns, as the Bhṛgus (fabricate) a car (for use).

नू ष्टुत इन्द्र नू गृणान इषं जरित्रे नद्यो न पीपेः । अकारि ते हरिवो ब्रह्म नव्यं धिया स्याम रथ्यः सदासाः ॥

nū ṣṭuta indra nū gṛṇāna iṣaṃ jaritre nadyo na pīpeḥ | akāri te harivo brahma navyaṃ dhiyā syāma rathyaḥ sadāsāḥ ||

Glorified (in the past), glorified, Indra, at present, satisfy your worshipper with food, as rivers (are filled with water); lord of horses, a new hymn has been made for you; may we possessed of chariots, be ever delighted in (your) praise.
