[rv-3-54] • 22 श्लोकाः

इमं महे विदथ्याय शूषं शश्वत्कृत्व ईड्याय प्र जभ्रुः । शृणोतु नो दम्येभिरनीकैः शृणोत्वग्निर्दिव्यैरजस्रः ॥

imaṃ mahe vidathyāya śūṣaṃ śaśvatkṛtva īḍyāya pra jabhruḥ | śṛṇotu no damyebhiranīkaiḥ śṛṇotvagnirdivyairajasraḥ ||

They recite repeatedly this gratifying praise to the great product of sacrifice (Agni); may he who is (endowed) with domestic radiance hear us; may the imperishable Agni, (endowed) with divine radiance, hear us.

महि महे दिवे अर्चा पृथिव्यै कामो म इच्छञ्चरति प्रजानन् । ययोर्ह स्तोमे विदथेषु देवाः सपर्यवो मादयन्ते सचायोः ॥

mahi mahe dive arcā pṛthivyai kāmo ma icchañcarati prajānan | yayorha stome vidatheṣu devāḥ saparyavo mādayante sacāyoḥ ||

Knowing their greatness, offer worship to the vast heaven and to the earth; my desire, wishing (for felicity) proceed (to them), in whose praise the gods,desirous of adoration, delight together with their worshippers at the sacrifice.

युवोॠतं रोदसी सत्यमस्तु महे षु णः सुविताय प्र भूतम् । इदं दिवे नमो अग्ने पृथिव्यै सपर्यामि प्रयसा यामि रत्नम् ॥

yuvoṝtaṃ rodasī satyamastu mahe ṣu ṇaḥ suvitāya pra bhūtam | idaṃ dive namo agne pṛthivyai saparyāmi prayasā yāmi ratnam ||

Heaven and earth, may your truth be ever inviolable; be propitious to us for the due completion of the rite; this adoration (Agni) is offered to heaven and earth; I worship (them) with (sacrificial) food; I solicit of them precious (wealth).

उतो हि वां पूर्व्या आविविद्र ऋतावरी रोदसी सत्यवाचः । नरश्चिद्वां समिथे शूरसातौ ववन्दिरे पृथिवि वेविदानाः ॥

uto hi vāṃ pūrvyā āvividra ṛtāvarī rodasī satyavācaḥ | naraścidvāṃ samithe śūrasātau vavandire pṛthivi vevidānāḥ ||

Heaven and earth, endowed with truth, they who are the ancient declarers of the truth, have obtained from you (what they desired); and so, earth, men cognizant (of the greaness of you both) have worshipped you for the sake of triumphing over (hostile) heroes in battle.

को अद्धा वेद क इह प्र वोचद्देवाँ अच्छा पथ्या का समेति । ददृश्र एषामवमा सदांसि परेषु या गुह्येषु व्रतेषु ॥

ko addhā veda ka iha pra vocaddevā~ acchā pathyā kā sameti | dadṛśra eṣāmavamā sadāṃsi pareṣu yā guhyeṣu vrateṣu ||

Who knows what is the truth, or who may here declare it? What is the proper path that leads to the gods? Their inferior abiding plural ces are beheld, as are those which (are situated) in superior mysterious rites.

कविर्नृचक्षा अभि षीमचष्ट ऋतस्य योना विघृते मदन्ती । नाना चक्राते सदनं यथा वेः समानेन क्रतुना संविदाने ॥

kavirnṛcakṣā abhi ṣīmacaṣṭa ṛtasya yonā vighṛte madantī | nānā cakrāte sadanaṃ yathā veḥ samānena kratunā saṃvidāne ||

The far-seeing beholder of mankind (the sun), surveys this heaven and earth, rejoicing when deficient in moisture in the womb of the waters (the firmament), both concurring in community (of function), although they occupy various dwellings, like the diversified nests of a bird.

समान्या वियुते दूरेअन्ते ध्रुवे पदे तस्थतुर्जागरूके । उत स्वसारा युवती भवन्ती आदु ब्रुवाते मिथुनानि नाम ॥

samānyā viyute dūreante dhruve pade tasthaturjāgarūke | uta svasārā yuvatī bhavantī ādu bruvāte mithunāni nāma ||

Common (in function), disjoined, of distant termination, they remain vigilant in a permanent station; being, as it were, sisters, and ever young; they therefore address each other by twin appellations.

विश्वेदेते जनिमा सं विविक्तो महो देवान्बिभ्रती न व्यथेते । एजद्ध्रुवं पत्यते विश्वमेकं चरत्पतत्रि विषुणं वि जातम् ॥

viśvedete janimā saṃ vivikto maho devānbibhratī na vyathete | ejaddhruvaṃ patyate viśvamekaṃ caratpatatri viṣuṇaṃ vi jātam ||

These two keep all born things discrete, and, although comprehending the great divinities, are not distressed; all moving and stationary beings rest upon one (basis), whether animals, or birds, or creatures of various kinds.

सना पुराणमध्येम्यारान्महः पितुर्जनितुर्जामि तन्नः । देवासो यत्र पनितार एवैरुरौ पथि व्युते तस्थुरन्तः ॥

sanā purāṇamadhyemyārānmahaḥ piturjaniturjāmi tannaḥ | devāso yatra panitāra evairurau pathi vyute tasthurantaḥ ||

I consider at present the eternal and ancient sisterhood to us of you, our great protectress and progenitrix, within whose vast and separated path your eulogists, the gods, travel in their chariots.

इमं स्तोमं रोदसी प्र ब्रवीम्यृदूदराः शृणवन्नग्निजिह्वाः । मित्रः सम्राजो वरुणो युवान आदित्यासः कवयः पप्रथानाः ॥

imaṃ stomaṃ rodasī pra bravīmyṛdūdarāḥ śṛṇavannagnijihvāḥ | mitraḥ samrājo varuṇo yuvāna ādityāsaḥ kavayaḥ paprathānāḥ ||

I repeat this hymn, heaven and earth, to you; and may the soft-bellied, fire-tongued Mitra, royal Varuṇa, the youthful Ādityas, all cognizant of the past, and proclaiming (their own acts), hear it.

हिरण्यपाणिः सविता सुजिह्वस्त्रिरा दिवो विदथे पत्यमानः । देवेषु च सवितः श्लोकमश्रेरादस्मभ्यमा सुव सर्वतातिम् ॥

hiraṇyapāṇiḥ savitā sujihvastrirā divo vidathe patyamānaḥ | deveṣu ca savitaḥ ślokamaśrerādasmabhyamā suva sarvatātim ||

The golden-handed, soft-tongued Savitā is descending from heaven (to be present) thrice (daily) at the sacrifice; accept, Savitā, the praise (recited) by the worshippers, and thereupon grant to us all our desires.

सुकृत्सुपाणिः स्ववाँ ऋतावा देवस्त्वष्टावसे तानि नो धात् । पूषण्वन्त ऋभवो मादयध्वमूर्ध्वग्रावाणो अध्वरमतष्ट ॥

sukṛtsupāṇiḥ svavā~ ṛtāvā devastvaṣṭāvase tāni no dhāt | pūṣaṇvanta ṛbhavo mādayadhvamūrdhvagrāvāṇo adhvaramataṣṭa ||

May the divine Tvaṣṭā, the able artificer, the dextrous-handed, the possessor of wealth, the observer of truth, bestow upon us those things (which are necessary) for our preservation; ṛbhus, associated with Pūṣan, make us joyful, as they (the priests), with uplifted stones, prepare the sacred libation.

विद्युद्रथा मरुत ऋष्टिमन्तो दिवो मर्या ऋतजाता अयासः । सरस्वती शृणवन्यज्ञियासो धाता रयिं सहवीरं तुरासः ॥

vidyudrathā maruta ṛṣṭimanto divo maryā ṛtajātā ayāsaḥ | sarasvatī śṛṇavanyajñiyāso dhātā rayiṃ sahavīraṃ turāsaḥ ||

May the Maruts, whose cars are the lightning, who are armed with spears, resplendent, destroyers of foes, from whom the waters proceed, (who are) unresting and adorable, and may Sarasvatī hear (my prayer); and may you (maruts), speedy in your liberality, bestow (upon us) riches and good offspring.

विष्णुं स्तोमासः पुरुदस्ममर्का भगस्येव कारिणो यामनि ग्मन् । उरुक्रमः ककुहो यस्य पूर्वीर्न मर्धन्ति युवतयो जनित्रीः ॥

viṣṇuṃ stomāsaḥ purudasmamarkā bhagasyeva kāriṇo yāmani gman | urukramaḥ kakuho yasya pūrvīrna mardhanti yuvatayo janitrīḥ ||

May (our) praises and prayers, the causes of good fortune, attain at this sacrifice Viṣṇu, the object of many rites; he, the wide-stepping; whose commands the many-blending regions of space, the genitive rators (of all beings), do not disobey.

इन्द्रो विश्वैर्वीर्यैः पत्यमान उभे आ पप्रौ रोदसी महित्वा । पुरंदरो वृत्रहा धृष्णुषेणः संगृभ्या न आ भरा भूरि पश्वः ॥

indro viśvairvīryaiḥ patyamāna ubhe ā paprau rodasī mahitvā | puraṃdaro vṛtrahā dhṛṣṇuṣeṇaḥ saṃgṛbhyā na ā bharā bhūri paśvaḥ ||

Indra, invested with all energies, has filled both heaven and earth with his greatness; do you, who are the destroyer of cities, the slayer of Vṛtra, the leader of a conquering host, collect cattle and bestow them abundantly upon us.

नासत्या मे पितरा बन्धुपृच्छा सजात्यमश्विनोश्चारु नाम । युवं हि स्थो रयिदौ नो रयीणां दात्रं रक्षेथे अकवैरदब्धा ॥

nāsatyā me pitarā bandhupṛcchā sajātyamaśvinoścāru nāma | yuvaṃ hi stho rayidau no rayīṇāṃ dātraṃ rakṣethe akavairadabdhā ||

Nāsatyas, my protectors, inquirers (after the wishes) of your kinsman, beautiful is your cognate appellation of Aśvins; be to us the liberal donors of riches; do you, who are irresistible, protect the offerer (of the oblation) with unblameable (defences).]

महत्तद्वः कवयश्चारु नाम यद्ध देवा भवथ विश्व इन्द्रे । सख ऋभुभिः पुरुहूत प्रियेभिरिमां धियं सातये तक्षता नः ॥

mahattadvaḥ kavayaścāru nāma yaddha devā bhavatha viśva indre | sakha ṛbhubhiḥ puruhūta priyebhirimāṃ dhiyaṃ sātaye takṣatā naḥ ||

Sages acquainted with the past, excellent is that beautiful appellation under which you have both become gods in (the sphere of) Indra; do you, Indra, the invoked of many, a friend, (associated) with the beloved ṛbhus, shape this prayer for our benefit.

अर्यमा णो अदितिर्यज्ञियासोऽदब्धानि वरुणस्य व्रतानि । युयोत नो अनपत्यानि गन्तोः प्रजावान्नः पशुमाँ अस्तु गातुः ॥

aryamā ṇo aditiryajñiyāso'dabdhāni varuṇasya vratāni | yuyota no anapatyāni gantoḥ prajāvānnaḥ paśumā~ astu gātuḥ ||

May Aryaman, Aditi, the adorable (gods), and the unimpeded functions of Varuṇa (protect) us; keep us from (following) the course unpropitious to offspring, and may our dwelling be abundant in progeny and cattle.

देवानां दूतः पुरुध प्रसूतोऽनागान्नो वोचतु सर्वताता । शृणोतु नः पृथिवी द्यौरुतापः सूर्यो नक्षत्रैरुर्वन्तरिक्षम् ॥

devānāṃ dūtaḥ purudha prasūto'nāgānno vocatu sarvatātā | śṛṇotu naḥ pṛthivī dyaurutāpaḥ sūryo nakṣatrairurvantarikṣam ||

May the messenger of the gods, engendered in many plural ces, everywhere proclaim us void of offence; may earth and heaven, the waters, the sun, and the vast firmament, with the constellation, hear us.

शृण्वन्तु नो वृषणः पर्वतासो ध्रुवक्षेमास इऴया मदन्तः । आदित्यैर्नो अदितिः शृणोतु यच्छन्तु नो मरुतः शर्म भद्रम् ॥

śṛṇvantu no vṛṣaṇaḥ parvatāso dhruvakṣemāsa iḻayā madantaḥ | ādityairno aditiḥ śṛṇotu yacchantu no marutaḥ śarma bhadram ||

May the (divine) showerers (of benefits), the deities of the mountains, and those abiding in fixed habitations, propitiated by the sacrificial food, hear us; may Aditi, with the Ādityas, heqar us; may the Maruts grant us auspicious felicity.

सदा सुगः पितुमाँ अस्तु पन्था मध्वा देवा ओषधीः सं पिपृक्त । भगो मे अग्ने सख्ये न मृध्या उद्रायो अश्यां सदनं पुरुक्षोः ॥

sadā sugaḥ pitumā~ astu panthā madhvā devā oṣadhīḥ saṃ pipṛkta | bhago me agne sakhye na mṛdhyā udrāyo aśyāṃ sadanaṃ purukṣoḥ ||

May our path ever be easy of going, and provided with food; sprinkle, gods, the plural nts with sweet water; (safe) in your friendship, Agni, may my fortune never be impaired, but may I occupy a dwelling (abounding) with riches and ample food.

स्वदस्व हव्या समिषो दिदीह्यस्मद्र्यक्सं मिमीहि श्रवांसि । विश्वाँ अग्ने पृत्सु ताञ्जेषि शत्रूनहा विश्वा सुमना दीदिही नः ॥

svadasva havyā samiṣo didīhyasmadryaksaṃ mimīhi śravāṃsi | viśvā~ agne pṛtsu tāñjeṣi śatrūnahā viśvā sumanā dīdihī naḥ ||

Taste (Agni) the oblations, make manifest (for us) abundant food measure out the viands before us; you overcome all those (who are) our enemies in conflict; favourably inclined towards us lighten up all our (ceremonies) day by day.
