[rv-3-53] • 24 श्लोकाः

इन्द्रापर्वता बृहता रथेन वामीरिष आ वहतं सुवीराः । वीतं हव्यान्यध्वरेषु देवा वर्धेथां गीर्भिरिऴया मदन्ता ॥

indrāparvatā bṛhatā rathena vāmīriṣa ā vahataṃ suvīrāḥ | vītaṃ havyānyadhvareṣu devā vardhethāṃ gīrbhiriḻayā madantā ||

Indra and Parvata, bring hither, in a spacious car, delightful viands (genitive rative of) good progeny; partake, deities, of the oblations (offered)at (our) sacrifices, and gratified by the (sacrificial) food, be elevated by our praises.

तिष्ठा सु कं मघवन्मा परा गाः सोमस्य नु त्वा सुषुतस्य यक्षि । पितुर्न पुत्रः सिचमा रभे त इन्द्र स्वादिष्ठया गिरा शचीवः ॥

tiṣṭhā su kaṃ maghavanmā parā gāḥ somasya nu tvā suṣutasya yakṣi | piturna putraḥ sicamā rabhe ta indra svādiṣṭhayā girā śacīvaḥ ||

Tarry a while contentedly, Maghavan (at our rite); go not away; for I offer to you (the libation) of the copiously-effused Soma; powerful Indra, I lay hold of the skirts (of your robe) with sweet-flavoured commendations, as a son (clings to the garment) of a father.

शंसावाध्वर्यो प्रति मे गृणीहीन्द्राय वाहः कृणवाव जुष्टम् । एदं बर्हिर्यजमानस्य सीदाथा च भूदुक्थमिन्द्राय शस्तम् ॥

śaṃsāvādhvaryo prati me gṛṇīhīndrāya vāhaḥ kṛṇavāva juṣṭam | edaṃ barhiryajamānasya sīdāthā ca bhūdukthamindrāya śastam ||

Adhvaryu, let us two offer praise; do you concur with me; let us address plural asing praise to Indra; sit down, Indra, on the sacred grass (prepared by) the instrumental tutor of the rite; and may our commendations be most acceptable to Indra.

जायेदस्तं मघवन्त्सेदु योनिस्तदित्त्वा युक्ता हरयो वहन्तु । यदा कदा च सुनवाम सोममग्निष्ट्वा दूतो धन्वात्यच्छ ॥

jāyedastaṃ maghavantsedu yonistadittvā yuktā harayo vahantu | yadā kadā ca sunavāma somamagniṣṭvā dūto dhanvātyaccha ||

A man's wife, Maghavan, is hiw dwelling; verily she is his plural ce of birth; thither let your horses, harnessed (to your car), convey you; we prepare the Soma at the fit season; may Agni come as our messenger befor eyou.

परा याहि मघवन्ना च याहीन्द्र भ्रातरुभयत्रा ते अर्थम् । यत्रा रथस्य बृहतो निधानं विमोचनं वाजिनो रासभस्य ॥

parā yāhi maghavannā ca yāhīndra bhrātarubhayatrā te artham | yatrā rathasya bṛhato nidhānaṃ vimocanaṃ vājino rāsabhasya ||

Depart, Maghavan; come Indra; both ways, protector, there is a motive for you whether it be standing in your vast chariot, or liberating your neighing steed.

अपाः सोममस्तमिन्द्र प्र याहि कल्याणीर्जाया सुरणं गृहे ते । यत्रा रथस्य बृहतो निधानं विमोचनं वाजिनो दक्षिणावत् ॥

apāḥ somamastamindra pra yāhi kalyāṇīrjāyā suraṇaṃ gṛhe te | yatrā rathasya bṛhato nidhānaṃ vimocanaṃ vājino dakṣiṇāvat ||

When you have drunk the Soma, then, Indra, go home; an auspicious life (abides) plural asantly in your dwelling; in either (case) there is the standing in your car or liberating the steeds for provender.

इमे भोजा अङ्गिरसो विरूपा दिवस्पुत्रासो असुरस्य वीराः । विश्वामित्राय ददतो मघानि सहस्रसावे प्र तिरन्त आयुः ॥

ime bhojā aṅgiraso virūpā divasputrāso asurasya vīrāḥ | viśvāmitrāya dadato maghāni sahasrasāve pra tiranta āyuḥ ||

These (sacrificers) are the Bhojas, of whom the diversified Aṅgirasas (are the priests); and the heroic sons of the expeller (of the foes of the gods) from heaven, bestowing riches upon Viśvāmitra at the sacrifice of a thousand (victims), prolong (his) life.

रूपंरूपं मघवा बोभवीति मायाः कृण्वानस्तन्वं परि स्वाम् । त्रिर्यद्दिवः परि मुहूर्तमागात्स्वैर्मन्त्रैरनृतुपा ऋतावा ॥

rūpaṃrūpaṃ maghavā bobhavīti māyāḥ kṛṇvānastanvaṃ pari svām | triryaddivaḥ pari muhūrtamāgātsvairmantrairanṛtupā ṛtāvā ||

Maghavan becomes repeatedly (manifest) in various forms, practising delusions with respect to his own peculiar person n; and invoked by his appropriate prayers, he comes in a moment from heaven to the three (daily rites), and, although observant of seasons, is the drinker (of the Soma) irrespective of season.

महाँ ऋषिर्देवजा देवजूतोऽस्तभ्नात्सिन्धुमर्णवं नृचक्षाः । विश्वामित्रो यदवहत्सुदासमप्रियायत कुशिकेभिरिन्द्रः ॥

mahā~ ṛṣirdevajā devajūto'stabhnātsindhumarṇavaṃ nṛcakṣāḥ | viśvāmitro yadavahatsudāsamapriyāyata kuśikebhirindraḥ ||

The great ṛṣi the genitive rator of the gods, the attracted by the deities, the overlooker of the leaders (at holy rites), Viśvāmitra attested the watery stream when he sacrificed for Sudās; Indra, with the Kuśikas was plural ased.

हंसा इव कृणुथ श्लोकमद्रिभिर्मदन्तो गीर्भिरध्वरे सुते सचा । देवेभिर्विप्रा ऋषयो नृचक्षसो वि पिबध्वं कुशिकाः सोम्यं मधु ॥

haṃsā iva kṛṇutha ślokamadribhirmadanto gīrbhiradhvare sute sacā | devebhirviprā ṛṣayo nṛcakṣaso vi pibadhvaṃ kuśikāḥ somyaṃ madhu ||

Sages and saints overlookers of the leaders (of sacred rites), Kuśikas, when the Soma is expresssed with stones at the sacrifice, then exhilarating (the gods) with praises, sing the holy strain (aloud) like (screaming) swans, and, together with the gods, drink the sweet juice of the Soma.

उप प्रेत कुशिकाश्चेतयध्वमश्वं राये प्र मुञ्चता सुदासः । राजा वृत्रं जङ्घनत्प्रागपागुदगथा यजाते वर आ पृथिव्याः ॥

upa preta kuśikāścetayadhvamaśvaṃ rāye pra muñcatā sudāsaḥ | rājā vṛtraṃ jaṅghanatprāgapāgudagathā yajāte vara ā pṛthivyāḥ ||

Approach, Kuśikas, the steed of Sudās; animate (him), and let him loose to (win) riches (for the raja); for the king (of the gods) has slain Vṛtra in the East, in the West, in the North, therefore let (Sudās) worship him in the best (regions) of the earth.

य इमे रोदसी उभे अहमिन्द्रमतुष्टवम् । विश्वामित्रस्य रक्षति ब्रह्मेदं भारतं जनम् ॥

ya ime rodasī ubhe ahamindramatuṣṭavam | viśvāmitrasya rakṣati brahmedaṃ bhārataṃ janam ||

I have made Indra glorified by these two, heaven and earth, and this prayer of Viśvāmitra protects the race of Bharata.

विश्वामित्रा अरासत ब्रह्मेन्द्राय वज्रिणे । करदिन्नः सुराधसः ॥

viśvāmitrā arāsata brahmendrāya vajriṇe | karadinnaḥ surādhasaḥ ||

The Viśvāmitras have addressed the prayer to Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt; may he therefore render us very opulent.

किं ते कृण्वन्ति कीकटेषु गावो नाशिरं दुह्रे न तपन्ति घर्मम् । आ नो भर प्रमगन्दस्य वेदो नैचाशाखं मघवन्रन्धया नः ॥

kiṃ te kṛṇvanti kīkaṭeṣu gāvo nāśiraṃ duhre na tapanti gharmam | ā no bhara pramagandasya vedo naicāśākhaṃ maghavanrandhayā naḥ ||

What do the cattle for you among the Kīkaṭas; they yield no milk to mix with the Soma, they need not the vessel (for the libation); bring them to us; (bring also) the wealth of the son of the usurer, and give us Maghavan, (the possessions) of the low branches (of the community).

ससर्परीरमतिं बाधमाना बृहन्मिमाय जमदग्निदत्ता । आ सूर्यस्य दुहिता ततान श्रवो देवेष्वमृतमजुर्यम् ॥

sasarparīramatiṃ bādhamānā bṛhanmimāya jamadagnidattā | ā sūryasya duhitā tatāna śravo deveṣvamṛtamajuryam ||

The daughter of Sūrya given by Jamadagni gliding everywhere and dissipating ignorance, has emitted a mighty (sound), and has diffused ambrosial imperishable food among the gods.

ससर्परीरभरत्तूयमेभ्योऽधि श्रवः पाञ्चजन्यासु कृष्टिषु । सा पक्ष्या नव्यमायुर्दधाना यां मे पलस्तिजमदग्नयो ददुः ॥

sasarparīrabharattūyamebhyo'dhi śravaḥ pāñcajanyāsu kṛṣṭiṣu | sā pakṣyā navyamāyurdadhānā yāṃ me palastijamadagnayo daduḥ ||

May she, gliding everywhere, quickly bring us food (suited) to the five races of men; may she, the daughter of the sun whom the grey-haired jamadagnis gave to me, (be) the bestower of new life.

स्थिरौ गावौ भवतां वीऴुरक्षो मेषा वि वर्हि मा युगं वि शारि । इन्द्रः पातल्ये ददतां शरीतोररिष्टनेमे अभि नः सचस्व ॥

sthirau gāvau bhavatāṃ vīḻurakṣo meṣā vi varhi mā yugaṃ vi śāri | indraḥ pātalye dadatāṃ śarītorariṣṭaneme abhi naḥ sacasva ||

May the horse be steady, the axle be strong, the pole be not defective, the yoke not be rotten; may Indra preserve the two yoke-pins from decay; car with uninjured felloes, be ready for us.

बलं धेहि तनूषु नो बलमिन्द्रानऴुत्सु नः । बलं तोकाय तनयाय जीवसे त्वं हि बलदा असि ॥

balaṃ dhehi tanūṣu no balamindrānaḻutsu naḥ | balaṃ tokāya tanayāya jīvase tvaṃ hi baladā asi ||

Give strength, Indra, to our bodies; give strength to our vehicles; (give) strength to our sons and grandsons; that they may live (long); for you are giver of strength.

अभि व्ययस्व खदिरस्य सारमोजो धेहि स्पन्दने शिंशपायाम् । अक्ष वीऴो वीऴित वीऴयस्व मा यामादस्मादव जीहिपो नः ॥

abhi vyayasva khadirasya sāramojo dhehi spandane śiṃśapāyām | akṣa vīḻo vīḻita vīḻayasva mā yāmādasmādava jīhipo naḥ ||

Fix firmly the substance of the khayar (axle), give solidity to the śiśu (floor) of the car; strong axle, strongly fixed by us, be strong; cast us not from out of our conveyance.

अयमस्मान्वनस्पतिर्मा च हा मा च रीरिषत् । स्वस्त्या गृहेभ्य आवसा आ विमोचनात् ॥

ayamasmānvanaspatirmā ca hā mā ca rīriṣat | svastyā gṛhebhya āvasā ā vimocanāt ||

May this lord of the forest never desert us nor do us harm; may we travel prosperously home until the stopping (of the car), until the unharnessing (of the steeds).

इन्द्रोतिभिर्बहुलाभिर्नो अद्य याच्छ्रेष्ठाभिर्मघवञ्छूर जिन्व । यो नो द्वेष्ट्यधरः सस्पदीष्ट यमु द्विष्मस्तमु प्राणो जहातु ॥

indrotibhirbahulābhirno adya yācchreṣṭhābhirmaghavañchūra jinva | yo no dveṣṭyadharaḥ saspadīṣṭa yamu dviṣmastamu prāṇo jahātu ||

Indra, hero,possessor of wealth, protect us this day against our foes with many and excellent defences; may the vile wretch who hates us fall (before us); may the breath of life depart from him whom we hate.

परशुं चिद्वि तपति शिम्बलं चिद्वि वृश्चति । उखा चिदिन्द्र येषन्ती प्रयस्ता फेनमस्यति ॥

paraśuṃ cidvi tapati śimbalaṃ cidvi vṛścati | ukhā cidindra yeṣantī prayastā phenamasyati ||

As (the tree) suffers pain from the axe, as the śimbal flower is (easily) cut off, as the injured cauldron leaking scatters foam, so may mine enemy perish.

न सायकस्य चिकिते जनासो लोधं नयन्ति पशु मन्यमानाः । नावाजिनं वाजिना हासयन्ति न गर्दभं पुरो अश्वान्नयन्ति ॥

na sāyakasya cikite janāso lodhaṃ nayanti paśu manyamānāḥ | nāvājinaṃ vājinā hāsayanti na gardabhaṃ puro aśvānnayanti ||

Men, (the might) of the destroyer is not known toyou; regarding him as a mere animal, they lead him away desirous (silently to complete his devotions); the wise condescend not to turn the foolish into ridicule, they do not lead the ass before the horse.

इम इन्द्र भरतस्य पुत्रा अपपित्वं चिकितुर्न प्रपित्वम् । हिन्वन्त्यश्वमरणं न नित्यं ज्यावाजं परि णयन्त्याजौ ॥

ima indra bharatasya putrā apapitvaṃ cikiturna prapitvam | hinvantyaśvamaraṇaṃ na nityaṃ jyāvājaṃ pari ṇayantyājau ||

These sons of Bharata, Indra, understand severance (from the Vasiṣṭhas), not association (with them); they urge their steeds (against them) as against a constant foe; they bear a stout bow (for their destruction) in battle.
