[rv-3-55] • 22 श्लोकाः

उषसः पूर्वा अध यद्व्यूषुर्महद्वि जज्ञे अक्षरं पदे गोः । व्रता देवानामुप नु प्रभूषन्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

uṣasaḥ pūrvā adha yadvyūṣurmahadvi jajñe akṣaraṃ pade goḥ | vratā devānāmupa nu prabhūṣanmahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

When the preceding dawns appear, the great imperishable (light) is engendered in the (firmament, the) sphere of the waters, and then the worshipper is alert to perform the rites (due to) the gods, for great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

मो षू णो अत्र जुहुरन्त देवा मा पूर्वे अग्ने पितरः पदज्ञाः । पुराण्योः सद्मनोः केतुरन्तर्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

mo ṣū ṇo atra juhuranta devā mā pūrve agne pitaraḥ padajñāḥ | purāṇyoḥ sadmanoḥ keturantarmahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

Let not the gods, Agni, now do us harm, nor the ancient progenitors, who have come to know the degree (of divinity); nor the manifester of light between the two ancient dwellings (earth and heaven, the sun); for great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

वि मे पुरुत्रा पतयन्ति कामाः शम्यच्छा दीद्ये पूर्व्याणि । समिद्धे अग्नावृतमिद्वदेम महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

vi me purutrā patayanti kāmāḥ śamyacchā dīdye pūrvyāṇi | samiddhe agnāvṛtamidvadema mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

Variously do my manifold desires alight; present at the solemnity, I recite ancient (hymns); when the fire is kindled we speak indeed the truth, for great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

समानो राजा विभृतः पुरुत्रा शये शयासु प्रयुतो वनानु । अन्या वत्सं भरति क्षेति माता महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

samāno rājā vibhṛtaḥ purutrā śaye śayāsu prayuto vanānu | anyā vatsaṃ bharati kṣeti mātā mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

The universal sovereign is conveyed to many directions; he sleeps in the plural ces of repose; he is connected with the forests; one mother (heaven) nourishes the child; the other (earth) gives him a dwelling; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

आक्षित्पूर्वास्वपरा अनूरुत्सद्यो जातासु तरुणीष्वन्तः । अन्तर्वतीः सुवते अप्रवीता महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

ākṣitpūrvāsvaparā anūrutsadyo jātāsu taruṇīṣvantaḥ | antarvatīḥ suvate apravītā mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

Existing in ancient plural nts, abiding afterwards in new, he enters into the young (herbs) as soon as they are produced; unimpregnated they become pregnant and bear fruit; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

शयुः परस्तादध नु द्विमाताबन्धनश्चरति वत्स एकः । मित्रस्य ता वरुणस्य व्रतानि महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

śayuḥ parastādadha nu dvimātābandhanaścarati vatsa ekaḥ | mitrasya tā varuṇasya vratāni mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

The child of two mothers sleeps in the west, but (in the morning) the single infant proceeds unobstructed (through the sky); these are the functions of Mitra and Varuṇa; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

द्विमाता होता विदथेषु सम्राऴन्वग्रं चरति क्षेति बुध्नः । प्र रण्यानि रण्यवाचो भरन्ते महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

dvimātā hotā vidatheṣu samrāḻanvagraṃ carati kṣeti budhnaḥ | pra raṇyāni raṇyavāco bharante mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

The child of two mothers, the invoker of the gods at sacrifices, the universal sovereign, proceeds thenceforward (in the sky); the root (of all), he abides (in the houses of the pious); the reciters of plural asant (words) offer him agreeable (praises); great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

शूरस्येव युध्यतो अन्तमस्य प्रतीचीनं ददृशे विश्वमायत् । अन्तर्मतिश्चरति निष्षिधं गोर्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

śūrasyeva yudhyato antamasya pratīcīnaṃ dadṛśe viśvamāyat | antarmatiścarati niṣṣidhaṃ gormahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

All (creatures) approaching too near his confines are beheld with their faces turned away as (an enemy) flies from a combatant; obvious (to all), he penetrates the water for its destruction; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

नि वेवेति पलितो दूत आस्वन्तर्महाँश्चरति रोचनेन । वपूंषि बिभ्रदभि नो वि चष्टे महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

ni veveti palito dūta āsvantarmahā~ścarati rocanena | vapūṃṣi bibhradabhi no vi caṣṭe mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

In those (plural nts) the aged messenger (of the gods) constantly abides; mighty, he presses with the radiant (sun) through the region of space; assuming various forms, he looks (complacently) upon us; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

विष्णुर्गोपाः परमं पाति पाथः प्रिया धामान्यमृता दधानः । अग्निष्टा विश्वा भुवनानि वेद महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

viṣṇurgopāḥ paramaṃ pāti pāthaḥ priyā dhāmānyamṛtā dadhānaḥ | agniṣṭā viśvā bhuvanāni veda mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

Pervading and protecting (all), possessing grateful and immortal radiance, he preserves the supreme path (or the rains), for Agni knows all these worlds; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

नाना चक्राते यम्या वपूंषि तयोरन्यद्रोचते कृष्णमन्यत् । श्यावी च यदरुषी च स्वसारौ महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

nānā cakrāte yamyā vapūṃṣi tayoranyadrocate kṛṣṇamanyat | śyāvī ca yadaruṣī ca svasārau mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

The twin pair (day and night) adopt various forms; one of them shines brightly, the other is black; twin sisters are they, one black and the other white; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

माता च यत्र दुहिता च धेनू सबर्दुघे धापयेते समीची । ऋतस्य ते सदसीऴे अन्तर्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

mātā ca yatra duhitā ca dhenū sabardughe dhāpayete samīcī | ṛtasya te sadasīḻe antarmahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

Where the mother and daughter, two productive kine, unite, they nourish each other; I worship them both in (the firmament), the dwelling of the waters great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

अन्यस्या वत्सं रिहती मिमाय कया भुवा नि दधे धेनुरूधः । ऋतस्य सा पयसापिन्वतेऴा महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

anyasyā vatsaṃ rihatī mimāya kayā bhuvā ni dadhe dhenurūdhaḥ | ṛtasya sā payasāpinvateḻā mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

Licking the calf of the other, one of them lows aloud; the cow offers her udder for the one that is without mosture (the earth), and she (the earth) is refreshed by the milk of the rain; great and unequalles is the might of the gods.

पद्या वस्ते पुरुरूपा वपूंष्यूर्ध्वा तस्थौ त्र्यविं रेरिहाणा । ऋतस्य सद्म वि चरामि विद्वान्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

padyā vaste pururūpā vapūṃṣyūrdhvā tasthau tryaviṃ rerihāṇā | ṛtasya sadma vi carāmi vidvānmahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

The earth wears bodies of many forms; she abides on high cherishing her year and a half old (calf); knowing the abode of the truth (the sun), I offer worship; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

पदे इव निहिते दस्मे अन्तस्तयोरन्यद्गुह्यमाविरन्यत् । सध्रीचीना पथ्या सा विषूची महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

pade iva nihite dasme antastayoranyadguhyamāviranyat | sadhrīcīnā pathyā sā viṣūcī mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

Like two (distinguishing) impressions, they (day and night) are plural ced visible in the midst (between heaven and earth), one hidden, one manifest; the path (of both) is common, and that is universal (for good and evil) great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

आ धेनवो धुनयन्तामशिश्वीः सबर्दुघाः शशया अप्रदुग्धाः । नव्यानव्या युवतयो भवन्तीर्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

ā dhenavo dhunayantāmaśiśvīḥ sabardughāḥ śaśayā apradugdhāḥ | navyānavyā yuvatayo bhavantīrmahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

May the kine without their young, abiding (in the heaven), and though unmilked, yet yielding milk and ever fresh and youthfu,l be shaken (so as to perform their functions); great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

यदन्यासु वृषभो रोरवीति सो अन्यस्मिन्यूथे नि दधाति रेतः । स हि क्षपावान्त्स भगः स राजा महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

yadanyāsu vṛṣabho roravīti so anyasminyūthe ni dadhāti retaḥ | sa hi kṣapāvāntsa bhagaḥ sa rājā mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

When the showerer roars in other (regions) he sends down the rain upon a different herd, for he is the victor, the auspicious, the sovereign; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

वीरस्य नु स्वश्व्यं जनासः प्र नु वोचाम विदुरस्य देवाः । षोऴ्हा युक्ताः पञ्चपञ्चा वहन्ति महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

vīrasya nu svaśvyaṃ janāsaḥ pra nu vocāma vidurasya devāḥ | ṣoḻhā yuktāḥ pañcapañcā vahanti mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

We proclaim, people, the wealth of the hero, (Indra), in horses; the gods know his (affluence); six, or five and five, harnessed to his car, convey him; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

देवस्त्वष्टा सविता विश्वरूपः पुपोष प्रजाः पुरुधा जजान । इमा च विश्वा भुवनान्यस्य महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

devastvaṣṭā savitā viśvarūpaḥ pupoṣa prajāḥ purudhā jajāna | imā ca viśvā bhuvanānyasya mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

The divine Tvaṣṭā the impeller (of all), the multiform, has begotten and nourished a numerous progeny, for all these worlds are of him; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

मही समैरच्चम्वा समीची उभे ते अस्य वसुना न्यृष्टे । शृण्वे वीरो विन्दमानो वसूनि महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

mahī samairaccamvā samīcī ubhe te asya vasunā nyṛṣṭe | śṛṇve vīro vindamāno vasūni mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

He has filled the two vast receptacles (heaven and earth) united (with creatures); they are both penetrated by his lustre; the hero spoiling the treasures (of the foe) is renowned; great and unequalled is the might of the gods.

इमां च नः पृथिवीं विश्वधाया उप क्षेति हितमित्रो न राजा । पुरःसदः शर्मसदो न वीरा महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

imāṃ ca naḥ pṛthivīṃ viśvadhāyā upa kṣeti hitamitro na rājā | puraḥsadaḥ śarmasado na vīrā mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

Our king, the nourisher of all, abides (in the firmament) nearest to this earthlike a benevolent friend; the valiant (Maruts) precede him (when abroad), and dwell in his mansion; great and unequalles is the might of the gods.

निष्षिध्वरीस्त ओषधीरुतापो रयिं त इन्द्र पृथिवी बिभर्ति । सखायस्ते वामभाजः स्याम महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम् ॥

niṣṣidhvarīsta oṣadhīrutāpo rayiṃ ta indra pṛthivī bibharti | sakhāyaste vāmabhājaḥ syāma mahaddevānāmasuratvamekam ||

The plural nts, Indra, come to perfection by you; from you the waters (flow); earth bears her treasures for you; may we, your friends, be sharers of these blessings; great unequalled is the might of the gods.
