[rv-3-33] • 13 श्लोकाः

प्र पर्वतानामुशती उपस्थादश्वे इव विषिते हासमाने । गावेव शुभ्रे मातरा रिहाणे विपाट् छुतुद्री पयसा जवेते ॥

pra parvatānāmuśatī upasthādaśve iva viṣite hāsamāne | gāveva śubhre mātarā rihāṇe vipāṭ chutudrī payasā javete ||

Rushing from the flanks of the mountains, eager (to reach the sea) like two mares with loosened reins contending (with each other in speed), like two fair mother cows (hastening) to caress (their calves), the Vipās' and Śutudri, flow readily with (united) waterṣ

इन्द्रेषिते प्रसवं भिक्षमाणे अच्छा समुद्रं रथ्येव याथः । समाराणे ऊर्मिभिः पिन्वमाने अन्या वामन्यामप्येति शुभ्रे ॥

indreṣite prasavaṃ bhikṣamāṇe acchā samudraṃ rathyeva yāthaḥ | samārāṇe ūrmibhiḥ pinvamāne anyā vāmanyāmapyeti śubhre ||

Impelled by Indra, soliciting (his commands), you go to the ocean like charioteers (to their goal); flowing together, and swelling with (your) waves, bright (rivers) one of you proceeds to the other.

अच्छा सिन्धुं मातृतमामयासं विपाशमुर्वीं सुभगामगन्म । वत्समिव मातरा संरिहाणे समानं योनिमनु संचरन्ती ॥

acchā sindhuṃ mātṛtamāmayāsaṃ vipāśamurvīṃ subhagāmaganma | vatsamiva mātarā saṃrihāṇe samānaṃ yonimanu saṃcarantī ||

I repaired to the most material river; I went to the wide auspicious Vipās', flowing together to a common receptacle, like parent cows (hastening to) caress the calf.

एना वयं पयसा पिन्वमाना अनु योनिं देवकृतं चरन्तीः । न वर्तवे प्रसवः सर्गतक्तः किंयुर्विप्रो नद्यो जोहवीति ॥

enā vayaṃ payasā pinvamānā anu yoniṃ devakṛtaṃ carantīḥ | na vartave prasavaḥ sargataktaḥ kiṃyurvipro nadyo johavīti ||

The rivers speak: Fertilizing (the land) with this (our) current, we are flowing to the receptacle which has been appointed by the deity (Indra); the course appointed for our going (permits) not of delay; of what is the sage desirious, that he addresses the rivers?

रमध्वं मे वचसे सोम्याय ऋतावरीरुप मुहूर्तमेवैः । प्र सिन्धुमच्छा बृहती मनीषावस्युरह्वे कुशिकस्य सूनुः ॥

ramadhvaṃ me vacase somyāya ṛtāvarīrupa muhūrtamevaiḥ | pra sindhumacchā bṛhatī manīṣāvasyurahve kuśikasya sūnuḥ ||

Viśvāmitra speaks: Rivers, charged with water, rest a moment from your course at my request, who go to gather the Soma; I, the son of Kuśika, desirous of protection, address with earnest prayer especially the river before me.

इन्द्रो अस्माँ अरदद्वज्रबाहुरपाहन्वृत्रं परिधिं नदीनाम् । देवोऽनयत्सविता सुपाणिस्तस्य वयं प्रसवे याम उर्वीः ॥

indro asmā~ aradadvajrabāhurapāhanvṛtraṃ paridhiṃ nadīnām | devo'nayatsavitā supāṇistasya vayaṃ prasave yāma urvīḥ ||

The rivers speak; Indra, the wielder of the thunder-bolt, dug our channels when he slew Ahi the blocker-up of rivers; the divine and well-handed Savitā has led us (on our path), and obedient tohis commands we flow (as) ample (streams).

प्रवाच्यं शश्वधा वीर्यं तदिन्द्रस्य कर्म यदहिं विवृश्चत् । वि वज्रेण परिषदो जघानायन्नापोऽयनमिच्छमानाः ॥

pravācyaṃ śaśvadhā vīryaṃ tadindrasya karma yadahiṃ vivṛścat | vi vajreṇa pariṣado jaghānāyannāpo'yanamicchamānāḥ ||

Viśvāmitra speaks: Ever is that heroic exploit of Indra to be celebrated when he cut Ahi to pieces, and with his thunderbolt destroyed the surrounding (obstructors of the rain), whence the waters proceed in the direction they desire.

एतद्वचो जरितर्मापि मृष्ठा आ यत्ते घोषानुत्तरा युगानि । उक्थेषु कारो प्रति नो जुषस्व मा नो नि कः पुरुषत्रा नमस्ते ॥

etadvaco jaritarmāpi mṛṣṭhā ā yatte ghoṣānuttarā yugāni | uktheṣu kāro prati no juṣasva mā no ni kaḥ puruṣatrā namaste ||

The rivers speak: Praiser of Indra, forget not this speech, nor the worlds that (you have addressed to us) for future ages (to reverence); celebrator (of holy rites), be favourable to us in solemn prayers; treat us not after the (arrogant fashion) of men; salutation be to you!

ओ षु स्वसारः कारवे शृणोत ययौ वो दूरादनसा रथेन । नि षू नमध्वं भवता सुपारा अधोअक्षाः सिन्धवः स्रोत्याभिः ॥

o ṣu svasāraḥ kārave śṛṇota yayau vo dūrādanasā rathena | ni ṣū namadhvaṃ bhavatā supārā adhoakṣāḥ sindhavaḥ srotyābhiḥ ||

Viśvāmitra speaks: Listen, sister (streams), kindly to him who praises you; who has come from afar with a waggon and chariot; bow down lowly; become easily fordable; remain, rivers, lower than the axle (of the wheel) with your currents.

आ ते कारो शृणवामा वचांसि ययाथ दूरादनसा रथेन । नि ते नंसै पीप्यानेव योषा मर्यायेव कन्या शश्वचै ते ॥

ā te kāro śṛṇavāmā vacāṃsi yayātha dūrādanasā rathena | ni te naṃsai pīpyāneva yoṣā maryāyeva kanyā śaśvacai te ||

The rivers speak: Hymner, we hear your words, that you have come from afar with a wagon and chariot; we bow down before you; like a woman nursing (her child), like a maiden bending to embrace a man, (so will we do) for you.

यदङ्ग त्वा भरताः संतरेयुर्गव्यन्ग्राम इषित इन्द्रजूतः । अर्षादह प्रसवः सर्गतक्त आ वो वृणे सुमतिं यज्ञियानाम् ॥

yadaṅga tvā bharatāḥ saṃtareyurgavyangrāma iṣita indrajūtaḥ | arṣādaha prasavaḥ sargatakta ā vo vṛṇe sumatiṃ yajñiyānām ||

Viśvāmitra speaks: (Since), rivers, (you have allowed me to cross), so may the Bharatas pass over (your united stream); may the troop desiring to cross the water, permitted (by you), and impelled by Indra, pass; then let the course appinted for your going (be resumed); I have recourse to the favour of you who are worthy of adoration.

अतारिषुर्भरता गव्यवः समभक्त विप्रः सुमतिं नदीनाम् । प्र पिन्वध्वमिषयन्तीः सुराधा आ वक्षणाः पृणध्वं यात शीभम् ॥

atāriṣurbharatā gavyavaḥ samabhakta vipraḥ sumatiṃ nadīnām | pra pinvadhvamiṣayantīḥ surādhā ā vakṣaṇāḥ pṛṇadhvaṃ yāta śībham ||

The Bharatās seeking cattle passed over; the sage enjoyed the favour of the rivers; streams dispensing food, productive of wealth, spread abundance, fill (your beds), flow swiftly.

उद्व ऊर्मिः शम्या हन्त्वापो योक्त्राणि मुञ्चत । मादुष्कृतौ व्येनसाघ्न्यौ शूनमारताम् ॥

udva ūrmiḥ śamyā hantvāpo yoktrāṇi muñcata | māduṣkṛtau vyenasāghnyau śūnamāratām ||

Let your waves (rivers) so flow that the pin of the yoke may be above (their) waters; leave the traces full, and may (the two streams), exempt from misfortune or defect, and uncensured, exhibit no (present) increase.
