[rv-3-32] • 17 श्लोकाः

इन्द्र सोमं सोमपते पिबेमं माध्यंदिनं सवनं चारु यत्ते । प्रप्रुथ्या शिप्रे मघवन्नृजीषिन्विमुच्या हरी इह मादयस्व ॥

indra somaṃ somapate pibemaṃ mādhyaṃdinaṃ savanaṃ cāru yatte | prapruthyā śipre maghavannṛjīṣinvimucyā harī iha mādayasva ||

Indra, lord of the Soma, drink this Soma which is grateful to you at noon-day sacrifice, Maghavan, partake of the spiritless Soma, unyoke your horses, and filling their jaws (with fodder), exhilarate them at this ceremony.

गवाशिरं मन्थिनमिन्द्र शुक्रं पिबा सोमं ररिमा ते मदाय । ब्रह्मकृता मारुतेना गणेन सजोषा रुद्रैस्तृपदा वृषस्व ॥

gavāśiraṃ manthinamindra śukraṃ pibā somaṃ rarimā te madāya | brahmakṛtā mārutenā gaṇena sajoṣā rudraistṛpadā vṛṣasva ||

Indra, drink the Soma mixed with milk, with butter-milk, or fresh; we offer it for your exhilaration, associated with the devout company of the Maruts and the Rudras; drink it till you are satisfied.

ये ते शुष्मं ये तविषीमवर्धन्नर्चन्त इन्द्र मरुतस्त ओजः । माध्यंदिने सवने वज्रहस्त पिबा रुद्रेभिः सगणः सुशिप्र ॥

ye te śuṣmaṃ ye taviṣīmavardhannarcanta indra marutasta ojaḥ | mādhyaṃdine savane vajrahasta pibā rudrebhiḥ sagaṇaḥ suśipra ||

These are the Maruts, Indra, who, worshipping your prowess, augment your withering force (by their aid); attended by the Rudras, drink, wielder of the thunder-bolt, and handsome-chinned, at the noon-day sacrifice.

त इन्न्वस्य मधुमद्विविप्र इन्द्रस्य शर्धो मरुतो य आसन् । येभिर्वृत्रस्येषितो विवेदामर्मणो मन्यमानस्य मर्म ॥

ta innvasya madhumadvivipra indrasya śardho maruto ya āsan | yebhirvṛtrasyeṣito vivedāmarmaṇo manyamānasya marma ||

Those were the Maruts who were the strength of Indra, and genitive ly encouraged him; animated by whom he pierced the vital part of Vṛtra, fancying himself vulnerable.

मनुष्वदिन्द्र सवनं जुषाणः पिबा सोमं शश्वते वीर्याय । स आ ववृत्स्व हर्यश्व यज्ञैः सरण्युभिरपो अर्णा सिसर्षि ॥

manuṣvadindra savanaṃ juṣāṇaḥ pibā somaṃ śaśvate vīryāya | sa ā vavṛtsva haryaśva yajñaiḥ saraṇyubhirapo arṇā sisarṣi ||

Phased with the sacrifice, as if it was that of Manu, drink, Indra, the Soma, for the sake of perpetual vigour; come, lord of the tawny steeds, with the adorable Maruts, and with the traversers (of the air); send down the waters (of the firmament) to (blend with) the waters of the earth.

त्वमपो यद्ध वृत्रं जघन्वाँ अत्याँ इव प्रासृजः सर्तवाजौ । शयानमिन्द्र चरता वधेन वव्रिवांसं परि देवीरदेवम् ॥

tvamapo yaddha vṛtraṃ jaghanvā~ atyā~ iva prāsṛjaḥ sartavājau | śayānamindra caratā vadhena vavrivāṃsaṃ pari devīradevam ||

Inasmuch as you have slain with active strife the slumbering, darking, water-investing Vṛtra, you have let forth the bright waters like horses (rushing) into battle.

यजाम इन्नमसा वृद्धमिन्द्रं बृहन्तमृष्वमजरं युवानम् । यस्य प्रिये ममतुर्यज्ञियस्य न रोदसी महिमानं ममाते ॥

yajāma innamasā vṛddhamindraṃ bṛhantamṛṣvamajaraṃ yuvānam | yasya priye mamaturyajñiyasya na rodasī mahimānaṃ mamāte ||

Therefore we sacrifice with reverence to the vast and mighty Indra, who is adorable, undecaying, young; whose magnitude the unbounded heaven and earth have not measures, nor can measure.

इन्द्रस्य कर्म सुकृता पुरूणि व्रतानि देवा न मिनन्ति विश्वे । दाधार यः पृथिवीं द्यामुतेमां जजान सूर्यमुषसं सुदंसाः ॥

indrasya karma sukṛtā purūṇi vratāni devā na minanti viśve | dādhāra yaḥ pṛthivīṃ dyāmutemāṃ jajāna sūryamuṣasaṃ sudaṃsāḥ ||

All the gods cannot detract from the many glorious exploits, and pious works of Indra; he who has upheld earth, and heaven, and the firmament, and who, the performer of great deeds, has engendered the sun and the dawn.

अद्रोघ सत्यं तव तन्महित्वं सद्यो यज्जातो अपिबो ह सोमम् । न द्याव इन्द्र तवसस्त ओजो नाहा न मासाः शरदो वरन्त ॥

adrogha satyaṃ tava tanmahitvaṃ sadyo yajjāto apibo ha somam | na dyāva indra tavasasta ojo nāhā na māsāḥ śarado varanta ||

Doer of no wrong, such was your true greatness, that as soon as born, you have quaffed the Soma; neither the heavens, nor days, nor months, nor years, resist the force of you who is mighty.

त्वं सद्यो अपिबो जात इन्द्र मदाय सोमं परमे व्योमन् । यद्ध द्यावापृथिवी आविवेशीरथाभवः पूर्व्यः कारुधायाः ॥

tvaṃ sadyo apibo jāta indra madāya somaṃ parame vyoman | yaddha dyāvāpṛthivī āviveśīrathābhavaḥ pūrvyaḥ kārudhāyāḥ ||

As soon as born in the highest heaven, you have quaffed, Indra, the Soma for your exhilaration; and when you had pervaded the heaven and earth, you became the primary artificer (of creation).

अहन्नहिं परिशयानमर्ण ओजायमानं तुविजात तव्यान् । न ते महित्वमनु भूदध द्यौर्यदन्यया स्फिग्या क्षामवस्थाः ॥

ahannahiṃ pariśayānamarṇa ojāyamānaṃ tuvijāta tavyān | na te mahitvamanu bhūdadha dyauryadanyayā sphigyā kṣāmavasthāḥ ||

Indra, from whom many are born; you who is vigorous have slain Ahi, enveloping the slumbering water and confiding in his prowess; yet the heaven apprehended not your greatness as you remained concealing the earth by on eof your flames.

यज्ञो हि त इन्द्र वर्धनो भूदुत प्रियः सुतसोमो मियेधः । यज्ञेन यज्ञमव यज्ञियः सन्यज्ञस्ते वज्रमहिहत्य आवत् ॥

yajño hi ta indra vardhano bhūduta priyaḥ sutasomo miyedhaḥ | yajñena yajñamava yajñiyaḥ sanyajñaste vajramahihatya āvat ||

This our sacrifice, Indra, is your augmentation, for the rite in which the Soma is effused is acceptable to you do you who is deserving of worship protect the worshipper by (the efficacy of) the worship, and may this sacrifice strengthen your thunderbolt for the slaying of Ahi.

यज्ञेनेन्द्रमवसा चक्रे अर्वागैनं सुम्नाय नव्यसे ववृत्याम् । यः स्तोमेभिर्वावृधे पूर्व्येभिर्यो मध्यमेभिरुत नूतनेभिः ॥

yajñenendramavasā cakre arvāgainaṃ sumnāya navyase vavṛtyām | yaḥ stomebhirvāvṛdhe pūrvyebhiryo madhyamebhiruta nūtanebhiḥ ||

The worshipper, by his conservatory sacrifice, has made Indra present; may Ibring him to my presence to obtain new wealth, him who has been exalted by praise, whether ancient, medieval, or recent.

विवेष यन्मा धिषणा जजान स्तवै पुरा पार्यादिन्द्रमह्नः । अंहसो यत्र पीपरद्यथा नो नावेव यान्तमुभये हवन्ते ॥

viveṣa yanmā dhiṣaṇā jajāna stavai purā pāryādindramahnaḥ | aṃhaso yatra pīparadyathā no nāveva yāntamubhaye havante ||

When the thought of glorifying Indra entered my mind, then I gave birth (to his praises); may I laud him before encountering distant (evil) days, whereby he may guide us beyond sin; for those on both sides of us invoke him, as (those on either bank of a river hail) a passenger in a boat.

आपूर्णो अस्य कलशः स्वाहा सेक्तेव कोशं सिसिचे पिबध्यै । समु प्रिया आववृत्रन्मदाय प्रदक्षिणिदभि सोमास इन्द्रम् ॥

āpūrṇo asya kalaśaḥ svāhā sekteva kośaṃ sisice pibadhyai | samu priyā āvavṛtranmadāya pradakṣiṇidabhi somāsa indram ||

The vase is filled for him (with Soma); welcome Indra; I pour it out for you to drink, as a water-carrier (pours water) from his bag; may the grateful Soma flow in reverence round Indra for his exhilaration.

न त्वा गभीरः पुरुहूत सिन्धुर्नाद्रयः परि षन्तो वरन्त । इत्था सखिभ्य इषितो यदिन्द्रा दृऴ्हं चिदरुजो गव्यमूर्वम् ॥

na tvā gabhīraḥ puruhūta sindhurnādrayaḥ pari ṣanto varanta | itthā sakhibhya iṣito yadindrā dṛḻhaṃ cidarujo gavyamūrvam ||

Invoked of many, the deep ocean arrests you not, nor do the accompanying mountains (stay you); and therefore, summoned by your friends, you have repressed the strong flame abiding in the abyss.

शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम् ॥

śunaṃ huvema maghavānamindramasminbhare nṛtamaṃ vājasātau | śṛṇvantamugramūtaye samatsu ghnantaṃ vṛtrāṇi saṃjitaṃ dhanānām ||

We invoke for our protection the opulent Indra, distinguished in this combat, the leader in the food-bestowing (strife), hearing (our praises), terrible in battles, the destroyer of foes, the conqueror of wealth.
