[rv-3-31] • 22 श्लोकाः

शासद्वह्निर्दुहितुर्नप्त्यं गाद्विद्वाँ ऋतस्य दीधितिं सपर्यन् । पिता यत्र दुहितुः सेकमृञ्जन्त्सं शग्म्येन मनसा दधन्वे ॥

śāsadvahnirduhiturnaptyaṃ gādvidvā~ ṛtasya dīdhitiṃ saparyan | pitā yatra duhituḥ sekamṛñjantsaṃ śagmyena manasā dadhanve ||

The sonless father, regulating (the contract), refers to his grandson, (the son) of his daughter, and relying on the efficiency of the rite, honours (his son-in-law) with valuable gifts; the father, trusting to the impregnation of the daughter, supports himself with a tranquil mind.

न जामये तान्वो रिक्थमारैक्चकार गर्भं सनितुर्निधानम् । यदी मातरो जनयन्त वह्निमन्यः कर्ता सुकृतोरन्य ऋन्धन् ॥

na jāmaye tānvo rikthamāraikcakāra garbhaṃ saniturnidhānam | yadī mātaro janayanta vahnimanyaḥ kartā sukṛtoranya ṛndhan ||

(A son) born of the body, does not transfer (paternal) wealth to a sister; he has made (her) the recptacle of the embryo of the husband; if the parents procreate children (of either sex), one is the performer of holy acts, the other is to be enriched (with gifts).

अग्निर्जज्ञे जुह्वा रेजमानो महस्पुत्राँ अरुषस्य प्रयक्षे । महान्गर्भो मह्या जातमेषां मही प्रवृद्धर्यश्वस्य यज्ञैः ॥

agnirjajñe juhvā rejamāno mahasputrā~ aruṣasya prayakṣe | mahāngarbho mahyā jātameṣāṃ mahī pravṛddharyaśvasya yajñaiḥ ||

For the worship of the resplendent (Indra), Agni, glowing with flame, has begotten mighty sons; great was the germ, and great was their birth, and great was their efficacy, for the worship of Haryaśva.

अभि जैत्रीरसचन्त स्पृधानं महि ज्योतिस्तमसो निरजानन् । तं जानतीः प्रत्युदायन्नुषासः पतिर्गवामभवदेक इन्द्रः ॥

abhi jaitrīrasacanta spṛdhānaṃ mahi jyotistamaso nirajānan | taṃ jānatīḥ pratyudāyannuṣāsaḥ patirgavāmabhavadeka indraḥ ||

The victorious (Maruts) associated (with Indra when contending with Vṛtra) perceived a great light issuing from the darkness. The dawns recognizing him (as the sun) arose, and Indra was the sole sovereign of the rays (of light).

वीऴौ सतीरभि धीरा अतृन्दन्प्राचाहिन्वन्मनसा सप्त विप्राः । विश्वामविन्दन्पथ्यामृतस्य प्रजानन्नित्ता नमसा विवेश ॥

vīḻau satīrabhi dhīrā atṛndanprācāhinvanmanasā sapta viprāḥ | viśvāmavindanpathyāmṛtasya prajānannittā namasā viveśa ||

The seven intelligent ages (the aṅgirasas) having ascertained that (the cows) were concealed in the strong (cavern), propitiated (Indra) by mental devotion; they recovered them all by the path of sacrifice; for Indra, knowing (their pious acts), and offering them homage, entered (the cave).

विदद्यदी सरमा रुग्णमद्रेर्महि पाथः पूर्व्यं सध्र्यक्कः । अग्रं नयत्सुपद्यक्षराणामच्छा रवं प्रथमा जानती गात् ॥

vidadyadī saramā rugṇamadrermahi pāthaḥ pūrvyaṃ sadhryakkaḥ | agraṃ nayatsupadyakṣarāṇāmacchā ravaṃ prathamā jānatī gāt ||

When Saramā discovered the broken (entrance) of the mountain, then Indra made great and ample (provision) for her young, as previously (promised); then the sure-footed (animal), forest recognizing their lowing, proceeded, and came to the presence of the imperishable kine.

अगच्छदु विप्रतमः सखीयन्नसूदयत्सुकृते गर्भमद्रिः । ससान मर्यो युवभिर्मखस्यन्नथाभवदङ्गिराः सद्यो अर्चन् ॥

agacchadu vipratamaḥ sakhīyannasūdayatsukṛte garbhamadriḥ | sasāna maryo yuvabhirmakhasyannathābhavadaṅgirāḥ sadyo arcan ||

The most sage (Indra), desirous of the friendship of the (aṅgirasas), went to the cave, and the mountain yielded its contents to the valiant (deity), aided by the youthful Maruts, equally wishing (to conciliate the sages); the destroyer (of the asuras) recovered (the cattle), and immediately aṅgirasas became his worshipper.

सतःसतः प्रतिमानं पुरोभूर्विश्वा वेद जनिमा हन्ति शुष्णम् । प्र णो दिवः पदवीर्गव्युरर्चन्त्सखा सखीँरमुञ्चन्निरवद्यात् ॥

sataḥsataḥ pratimānaṃ purobhūrviśvā veda janimā hanti śuṣṇam | pra ṇo divaḥ padavīrgavyurarcantsakhā sakhī~ramuñcanniravadyāt ||

May he who is the type of all that is excellent the anticipator (of his foes), he who knows all that is born, who destroys Śuṣṇa, the far-seeing, the restorer of cattle may he, a friend coming from heaven, honouring us as his friends, be free from all reproach.

नि गव्यता मनसा सेदुरर्कैः कृण्वानासो अमृतत्वाय गातुम् । इदं चिन्नु सदनं भूर्येषां येन मासाँ असिषासन्नृतेन ॥

ni gavyatā manasā sedurarkaiḥ kṛṇvānāso amṛtatvāya gātum | idaṃ cinnu sadanaṃ bhūryeṣāṃ yena māsā~ asiṣāsannṛtena ||

The aṅgirasas, with minds intent on their cattle, (sat down to worshipIndra) with hymns, following the road to immortality; great was their person verance by which they sought for months to accomplish (their ends).

सम्पश्यमाना अमदन्नभि स्वं पयः प्रत्नस्य रेतसो दुघानाः । वि रोदसी अतपद्घोष एषां जाते निष्ठामदधुर्गोषु वीरान् ॥

sampaśyamānā amadannabhi svaṃ payaḥ pratnasya retaso dughānāḥ | vi rodasī atapadghoṣa eṣāṃ jāte niṣṭhāmadadhurgoṣu vīrān ||

Contemplating their own (cattle) giving milk to their former progeny (the aṅgirasas) were delighted; their shouts spread through heaven and earth; they replaced the recovered kine in their plural ces, and stationed guards over the cows.

स जातेभिर्वृत्रहा सेदु हव्यैरुदुस्रिया असृजदिन्द्रो अर्कैः । उरूच्यस्मै घृतवद्भरन्ती मधु स्वाद्म दुदुहे जेन्या गौः ॥

sa jātebhirvṛtrahā sedu havyairudusriyā asṛjadindro arkaiḥ | urūcyasmai ghṛtavadbharantī madhu svādma duduhe jenyā gauḥ ||

Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra,let loose the milch kine, assisted by the Maruts, born for his aid, and entitled to praises and oblations, and the excellent (cows) contributing abundantly to sacred offerings, and yielding the butter of libation, milked for him sweet (sacrificial) food.

पित्रे चिच्चक्रुः सदनं समस्मै महि त्विषीमत्सुकृतो वि हि ख्यन् । विष्कभ्नन्तः स्कम्भनेना जनित्री आसीना ऊर्ध्वं रभसं वि मिन्वन् ॥

pitre ciccakruḥ sadanaṃ samasmai mahi tviṣīmatsukṛto vi hi khyan | viṣkabhnantaḥ skambhanenā janitrī āsīnā ūrdhvaṃ rabhasaṃ vi minvan ||

They (the aṅgirasas) performing pious acts made for their protector a spacious and splendid abode which they celebrated; seated (at the sacrifice) and supporting with the pillar (of the firmament) the parents (of all things heaven and earth), they established the rapid Indra on high (in heaven).

मही यदि धिषणा शिश्नथे धात्सद्योवृधं विभ्वं रोदस्योः । गिरो यस्मिन्ननवद्याः समीचीर्विश्वा इन्द्राय तविषीरनुत्ताः ॥

mahī yadi dhiṣaṇā śiśnathe dhātsadyovṛdhaṃ vibhvaṃ rodasyoḥ | giro yasminnanavadyāḥ samīcīrviśvā indrāya taviṣīranuttāḥ ||

Inasmuch as our devout praise has appointed a thiriving ruler for the regulation of heaven and earth, to whom faultless and appropriate commendations (are due), therefore are all the energies of Indra spontaneously exerted.

मह्या ते सख्यं वश्मि शक्तीरा वृत्रघ्ने नियुतो यन्ति पूर्वीः । महि स्तोत्रमव आगन्म सूरेरस्माकं सु मघवन्बोधि गोपाः ॥

mahyā te sakhyaṃ vaśmi śaktīrā vṛtraghne niyuto yanti pūrvīḥ | mahi stotramava āganma sūrerasmākaṃ su maghavanbodhi gopāḥ ||

I wish, Indra, for your friendship, and (the exercise of) your powers;many heroes come to the slayer of Vṛtra; we offer to you, sage, great praise and oblations; consider yourself, Maghavan, as our protector.

महि क्षेत्रं पुरु श्चन्द्रं विविद्वानादित्सखिभ्यश्चरथं समैरत् । इन्द्रो नृभिरजनद्दीद्यानः साकं सूर्यमुषसं गातुमग्निम् ॥

mahi kṣetraṃ puru ścandraṃ vividvānāditsakhibhyaścarathaṃ samairat | indro nṛbhirajanaddīdyānaḥ sākaṃ sūryamuṣasaṃ gātumagnim ||

Wide fields, vast treasure, (spacious) pastures has the much-knowing (Indra) bestowed upon his friends; the radiant Indra with the leaders (of rites, the Maruts) genitive rated the sun, the dawn, the earth and fire.

अपश्चिदेष विभ्वो दमूनाः प्र सध्रीचीरसृजद्विश्वश्चन्द्राः । मध्वः पुनानाः कविभिः पवित्रैर्द्युभिर्हिन्वन्त्यक्तुभिर्धनुत्रीः ॥

apaścideṣa vibhvo damūnāḥ pra sadhrīcīrasṛjadviśvaścandrāḥ | madhvaḥ punānāḥ kavibhiḥ pavitrairdyubhirhinvantyaktubhirdhanutrīḥ ||

This lowly-minded Indra has created the wide-spread, commingled, all-delighting waters; and they, purifying the sweet (libations) with the sage purifiers, and being benevolent (to all), proceed with (the revolutions) of days and nights.

अनु कृष्णे वसुधिती जिहाते उभे सूर्यस्य मंहना यजत्रे । परि यत्ते महिमानं वृजध्यै सखाय इन्द्र काम्या ऋजिप्याः ॥

anu kṛṣṇe vasudhitī jihāte ubhe sūryasya maṃhanā yajatre | pari yatte mahimānaṃ vṛjadhyai sakhāya indra kāmyā ṛjipyāḥ ||

The two adorable (alternations of) day and night, upholding (all things) by the might of the sun, successively revolve; your sincere and acceptable friends (the Maruts) are ready to encounter (your foes) and maintain your greatness.

पतिर्भव वृत्रहन्त्सूनृतानां गिरां विश्वायुर्वृषभो वयोधाः । आ नो गहि सख्येभिः शिवेभिर्महान्महीभिरूतिभिः सरण्यन् ॥

patirbhava vṛtrahantsūnṛtānāṃ girāṃ viśvāyurvṛṣabho vayodhāḥ | ā no gahi sakhyebhiḥ śivebhirmahānmahībhirūtibhiḥ saraṇyan ||

Slayer of Vṛtra, do you, who is long lived the showerer (of benefits), the giver of food, be the lord of our true praises, repairing (to the sacrifice), come to us great, with great, friendly, and auspicious protections.

तमङ्गिरस्वन्नमसा सपर्यन्नव्यं कृणोमि सन्यसे पुराजाम् । द्रुहो वि याहि बहुला अदेवीः स्वश्च नो मघवन्त्सातये धाः ॥

tamaṅgirasvannamasā saparyannavyaṃ kṛṇomi sanyase purājām | druho vi yāhi bahulā adevīḥ svaśca no maghavantsātaye dhāḥ ||

Worshipping him with reverence, like an aṅgiras, I make the ancient (Indra) renovate to accept the oblation; destroy the many impious oppressors (of your worshippers) and bestow upon us, Maghavan, yours own (wealth) for our acceptance.

मिहः पावकाः प्रतता अभूवन्त्स्वस्ति नः पिपृहि पारमासाम् । इन्द्र त्वं रथिरः पाहि नो रिषो मक्षूमक्षू कृणुहि गोजितो नः ॥

mihaḥ pāvakāḥ pratatā abhūvantsvasti naḥ pipṛhi pāramāsām | indra tvaṃ rathiraḥ pāhi no riṣo makṣūmakṣū kṛṇuhi gojito naḥ ||

You purifying water have been spread abroad; fill their beds for our welfare; riding on the car, defend us from the malevolent, and make us quickly the conquerors of cattle.

अदेदिष्ट वृत्रहा गोपतिर्गा अन्तः कृष्णाँ अरुषैर्धामभिर्गात् । प्र सूनृता दिशमान ऋतेन दुरश्च विश्वा अवृणोदप स्वाः ॥

adediṣṭa vṛtrahā gopatirgā antaḥ kṛṣṇā~ aruṣairdhāmabhirgāt | pra sūnṛtā diśamāna ṛtena duraśca viśvā avṛṇodapa svāḥ ||

Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, the lord of herds, has discovered the cattle, and by his radiant effulgence driven away the black (asuras), and indicating with veracity (to the aṅgirasas) the honest (kine), he shut the gate uon all their own cattle.

शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम् ॥

śunaṃ huvema maghavānamindramasminbhare nṛtamaṃ vājasātau | śṛṇvantamugramūtaye samatsu ghnantaṃ vṛtrāṇi saṃjitaṃ dhanānām ||

We invoke for our protection the opulent Indra, distinguished in this combat, the leader in the food-bestowing (strife), hearing (our praise), terriblein battles, the destroyer of foes, the conqueror of wealth.
