[rv-3-30] • 22 श्लोकाः

इच्छन्ति त्वा सोम्यासः सखायः सुन्वन्ति सोमं दधति प्रयांसि । तितिक्षन्ते अभिशस्तिं जनानामिन्द्र त्वदा कश्चन हि प्रकेतः ॥

icchanti tvā somyāsaḥ sakhāyaḥ sunvanti somaṃ dadhati prayāṃsi | titikṣante abhiśastiṃ janānāmindra tvadā kaścana hi praketaḥ ||

The bearers of the libations desire you; your friends pour forth the Soma; they offer copious oblations; (supported by) you they endure patiently the calumny of men, for who is so renowned as you are.

न ते दूरे परमा चिद्रजांस्या तु प्र याहि हरिवो हरिभ्याम् । स्थिराय वृष्णे सवना कृतेमा युक्ता ग्रावाणः समिधाने अग्नौ ॥

na te dūre paramā cidrajāṃsyā tu pra yāhi harivo haribhyām | sthirāya vṛṣṇe savanā kṛtemā yuktā grāvāṇaḥ samidhāne agnau ||

Master of tawny steeds, the remotest regions are not remote for you; then come quickly with your horses; to you the steady showerer (of benefits), these sacrifices are presented; the stones (for bruising the Soma) are ready, as the fire is being kindled.

इन्द्रः सुशिप्रो मघवा तरुत्रो महाव्रातस्तुविकूर्मिॠघावान् । यदुग्रो धा बाधितो मर्त्येषु क्व त्या ते वृषभ वीर्याणि ॥

indraḥ suśipro maghavā tarutro mahāvrātastuvikūrmiṝghāvān | yadugro dhā bādhito martyeṣu kva tyā te vṛṣabha vīryāṇi ||

Showerer (of benefits), who are Indra, the wearer of the helmet, the professor of opulence, the conveyor (of men beyond the evil), the leader of the numerous troops (of the Maruts), the achiever of many great deeds, the devastation of hostile (regions), the terror of your foes, where are those heroic deeds (which you have performed) against the mortal (asuras) when opposed (by them in battle).

त्वं हि ष्मा च्यावयन्नच्युतान्येको वृत्रा चरसि जिघ्नमानः । तव द्यावापृथिवी पर्वतासोऽनु व्रताय निमितेव तस्थुः ॥

tvaṃ hi ṣmā cyāvayannacyutānyeko vṛtrā carasi jighnamānaḥ | tava dyāvāpṛthivī parvatāso'nu vratāya nimiteva tasthuḥ ||

You alone casting down the firmly-footed (asuras) proceed, destroying the Vṛtras, and obedient to your command the heaven and earth and the mountains stood as if immoveable.

उताभये पुरुहूत श्रवोभिरेको दृऴ्हमवदो वृत्रहा सन् । इमे चिदिन्द्र रोदसी अपारे यत्संगृभ्णा मघवन्काशिरित्ते ॥

utābhaye puruhūta śravobhireko dṛḻhamavado vṛtrahā san | ime cidindra rodasī apāre yatsaṃgṛbhṇā maghavankāśiritte ||

You alone, when invoked by many, and the slayer of Vṛtra, by your prowess, did say firmly (to the gods), fear not! Indra, endowed with opulence, vast is your grasp, wherewith you have seized these unbounded regions, heaven and earth.

प्र सू त इन्द्र प्रवता हरिभ्यां प्र ते वज्रः प्रमृणन्नेतु शत्रून् । जहि प्रतीचो अनूचः पराचो विश्वं सत्यं कृणुहि विष्टमस्तु ॥

pra sū ta indra pravatā haribhyāṃ pra te vajraḥ pramṛṇannetu śatrūn | jahi pratīco anūcaḥ parāco viśvaṃ satyaṃ kṛṇuhi viṣṭamastu ||

Let (your car), Indra, drawn by your horses (rush) downwards (upon the asuras); let your destroying thunder-bolt fall upon your enemies; slay those that assail in front or in rear, or that fly (from the combat); make the universe (the abode of) truth; (let such power) be concentrated in you.

यस्मै धायुरदधा मर्त्यायाभक्तं चिद्भजते गेह्यं सः । भद्रा त इन्द्र सुमतिर्घृताची सहस्रदाना पुरुहूत रातिः ॥

yasmai dhāyuradadhā martyāyābhaktaṃ cidbhajate gehyaṃ saḥ | bhadrā ta indra sumatirghṛtācī sahasradānā puruhūta rātiḥ ||

The man to whom you grant, lord of power, (your good-will), enjoys unprecedented domestic (prosperity); Indra, who are invoked by many, your auspicous favour, which is obtained by oblations, is the giver of unbounded wealth.

सहदानुं पुरुहूत क्षियन्तमहस्तमिन्द्र सं पिणक्कुणारुम् । अभि वृत्रं वर्धमानं पियारुमपादमिन्द्र तवसा जघन्थ ॥

sahadānuṃ puruhūta kṣiyantamahastamindra saṃ piṇakkuṇārum | abhi vṛtraṃ vardhamānaṃ piyārumapādamindra tavasā jaghantha ||

Indra, who is invoked by many, grind to dust the reviling malevolent Vṛtra opposing you, dwelling with the mother of the Dānavas, and increasing in might, until having deprived him of hand and foot, you have destroyed him by your strength.

नि सामनामिषिरामिन्द्र भूमिं महीमपारां सदने ससत्थ । अस्तभ्नाद्द्यां वृषभो अन्तरिक्षमर्षन्त्वापस्त्वयेह प्रसूताः ॥

ni sāmanāmiṣirāmindra bhūmiṃ mahīmapārāṃ sadane sasattha | astabhnāddyāṃ vṛṣabho antarikṣamarṣantvāpastvayeha prasūtāḥ ||

You have fixed tranquil in its position the vast unbounded and wandering earth; the showerer (of benefits) has upheld the heaven and the firmament; let the waters engendered by you here descend.

अलातृणो वल इन्द्र व्रजो गोः पुरा हन्तोर्भयमानो व्यार । सुगान्पथो अकृणोन्निरजे गाः प्रावन्वाणीः पुरुहूतं धमन्तीः ॥

alātṛṇo vala indra vrajo goḥ purā hantorbhayamāno vyāra | sugānpatho akṛṇonniraje gāḥ prāvanvāṇīḥ puruhūtaṃ dhamantīḥ ||

The heavy cloud, the receptacle of water, dreading you its destroyer, opened out before (you had cast your bolt); then Indra made easily-traversed paths for the waters to issue, and desirable and loud sounding they proceeded to the (waters of the earth) invoked of many.

एको द्वे वसुमती समीची इन्द्र आ पप्रौ पृथिवीमुत द्याम् । उतान्तरिक्षादभि नः समीक इषो रथीः सयुजः शूर वाजान् ॥

eko dve vasumatī samīcī indra ā paprau pṛthivīmuta dyām | utāntarikṣādabhi naḥ samīka iṣo rathīḥ sayujaḥ śūra vājān ||

Indra alone has filled the two,both earth and heaven mutually combined, and abounding with wealth; do you hero, mounted in your car, come with your harnessed horses from the firmament, impatient to be near us.

दिशः सूर्यो न मिनाति प्रदिष्टा दिवेदिवे हर्यश्वप्रसूताः । सं यदानऴध्वन आदिदश्वैर्विमोचनं कृणुते तत्त्वस्य ॥

diśaḥ sūryo na mināti pradiṣṭā divedive haryaśvaprasūtāḥ | saṃ yadānaḻadhvana ādidaśvairvimocanaṃ kṛṇute tattvasya ||

Sūrya harms not the quarters (of the horizon), set open daily (for his journey), the progeny of Haryaśva; when he has traversed the roads (he is to travel), then he lets loose his horses, for such is his office.

दिदृक्षन्त उषसो यामन्नक्तोर्विवस्वत्या महि चित्रमनीकम् । विश्वे जानन्ति महिना यदागादिन्द्रस्य कर्म सुकृता पुरूणि ॥

didṛkṣanta uṣaso yāmannaktorvivasvatyā mahi citramanīkam | viśve jānanti mahinā yadāgādindrasya karma sukṛtā purūṇi ||

Al,l me are anxious to behold the great and variegated host (of the solar rays) at the issuing of the dawn after the night has been displaced; and when the morning has come, they recognize the many great and glorious acts of Indra.

महि ज्योतिर्निहितं वक्षणास्वामा पक्वं चरति बिभ्रती गौः । विश्वं स्वाद्म सम्भृतमुस्रियायां यत्सीमिन्द्रो अदधाद्भोजनाय ॥

mahi jyotirnihitaṃ vakṣaṇāsvāmā pakvaṃ carati bibhratī gauḥ | viśvaṃ svādma sambhṛtamusriyāyāṃ yatsīmindro adadhādbhojanāya ||

A great light has been shed upon the rivers; the cow yet immature grazes, charged with the ripe (milk), for Indra has plural ced in the cow all this collected sweetness for food.

इन्द्र दृह्य यामकोशा अभूवन्यज्ञाय शिक्ष गृणते सखिभ्यः । दुर्मायवो दुरेवा मर्त्यासो निषङ्गिणो रिपवो हन्त्वासः ॥

indra dṛhya yāmakośā abhūvanyajñāya śikṣa gṛṇate sakhibhyaḥ | durmāyavo durevā martyāso niṣaṅgiṇo ripavo hantvāsaḥ ||

Indra, be firm, for there are obstructors of your path; secure to the worshipper and his friends (the means of completing) the sacrifice; mortal enemies bearing bows, armed with mischievous weapons, and coming with evil intent, must be destroyed (by you).

सं घोषः शृण्वेऽवमैरमित्रैर्जही न्येष्वशनिं तपिष्ठाम् । वृश्चेमधस्ताद्वि रुजा सहस्व जहि रक्षो मघवन्रन्धयस्व ॥

saṃ ghoṣaḥ śṛṇve'vamairamitrairjahī nyeṣvaśaniṃ tapiṣṭhām | vṛścemadhastādvi rujā sahasva jahi rakṣo maghavanrandhayasva ||

The sound (of your bolt) has been heard by the approaching foes; hurl upon them the consuming thunder-bolt, cut them up by the root, oppose; Maghavan, overcome, slay the rākṣasas, complete (the sacrifice).

उद्वृह रक्षः सहमूलमिन्द्र वृश्चा मध्यं प्रत्यग्रं शृणीहि । आ कीवतः सललूकं चकर्थ ब्रह्मद्विषे तपुषिं हेतिमस्य ॥

udvṛha rakṣaḥ sahamūlamindra vṛścā madhyaṃ pratyagraṃ śṛṇīhi | ā kīvataḥ salalūkaṃ cakartha brahmadviṣe tapuṣiṃ hetimasya ||

plural ck the rākṣasas, Indra, by the root; cut as under the middle, blight the summit; to whatever remote (regions) you have driven the sinner, cast upon the enemy of the Veda your consuming weapon.

स्वस्तये वाजिभिश्च प्रणेतः सं यन्महीरिष आसत्सि पूर्वीः । रायो वन्तारो बृहतः स्यामास्मे अस्तु भग इन्द्र प्रजावान् ॥

svastaye vājibhiśca praṇetaḥ saṃ yanmahīriṣa āsatsi pūrvīḥ | rāyo vantāro bṛhataḥ syāmāsme astu bhaga indra prajāvān ||

Regulator (of the world, provide us) with horses for our welfare, and when you are seated near to us may we become mighty, enjoying abundant food, and ample riches, and may there be to us wealth accompanied by progeny.

आ नो भर भगमिन्द्र द्युमन्तं नि ते देष्णस्य धीमहि प्ररेके । ऊर्व इव पप्रथे कामो अस्मे तमा पृण वसुपते वसूनाम् ॥

ā no bhara bhagamindra dyumantaṃ ni te deṣṇasya dhīmahi prareke | ūrva iva paprathe kāmo asme tamā pṛṇa vasupate vasūnām ||

Bring to us, Indra, splendid affluence; we rely on the bounty of you who are fond of giving; our desire is as insatiable as the fire of the ocean; appease it, lord of infinite riches.

इमं कामं मन्दया गोभिरश्वैश्चन्द्रवता राधसा पप्रथश्च । स्वर्यवो मतिभिस्तुभ्यं विप्रा इन्द्राय वाहः कुशिकासो अक्रन् ॥

imaṃ kāmaṃ mandayā gobhiraśvaiścandravatā rādhasā paprathaśca | svaryavo matibhistubhyaṃ viprā indrāya vāhaḥ kuśikāso akran ||

Gratify this our desire (of wealth) with cows, with horses, with shining treasure, and make us renowned; the wise Kuśikas, desirous of heaven, offer praise to you Indra, with pious (prayers).

आ नो गोत्रा दर्दृहि गोपते गाः समस्मभ्यं सनयो यन्तु वाजाः । दिवक्षा असि वृषभ सत्यशुष्मोऽस्मभ्यं सु मघवन्बोधि गोदाः ॥

ā no gotrā dardṛhi gopate gāḥ samasmabhyaṃ sanayo yantu vājāḥ | divakṣā asi vṛṣabha satyaśuṣmo'smabhyaṃ su maghavanbodhi godāḥ ||

Indra, lord of cattle, (divide the clouds and send us) rain, whence nutritious food may come to us; showerer (of benefits), you are spread through the sky, and powerful through truth; Maghavan, consider yourself as our protector.

शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम् ॥

śunaṃ huvema maghavānamindramasminbhare nṛtamaṃ vājasātau | śṛṇvantamugramūtaye samatsu ghnantaṃ vṛtrāṇi saṃjitaṃ dhanānām ||

We invoke for our protection the opulent Indra distinguished in this combat; the leader in the food-bestowing (strife), hearing (our praises), terrible in battles the destroyer of foes, the conqueror of wealth.
