अस्तीदमधिमन्थनमस्ति प्रजननं कृतम् । एतां विश्पत्नीमा भराग्निं मन्थाम पूर्वथा ॥

astīdamadhimanthanamasti prajananaṃ kṛtam | etāṃ viśpatnīmā bharāgniṃ manthāma pūrvathā ||

This, the apparatus of attrition is ready; the genitive ration (of the flame) is ready; take up this (stick) the protectress of mankind, and let us churn the fire as has been done of old.

अरण्योर्निहितो जातवेदा गर्भ इव सुधितो गर्भिणीषु । दिवेदिव ईड्यो जागृवद्भिर्हविष्मद्भिर्मनुष्येभिरग्निः ॥

araṇyornihito jātavedā garbha iva sudhito garbhiṇīṣu | divediva īḍyo jāgṛvadbhirhaviṣmadbhirmanuṣyebhiragniḥ ||

Jātavedas has been deposited in the two sticks as the embryo is deposited in pregnant women; Agni is to be adored day by day by vigilant men laden with oblations.

उत्तानायामव भरा चिकित्वान्त्सद्यः प्रवीता वृषणं जजान । अरुषस्तूपो रुशदस्य पाज इऴायास्पुत्रो वयुनेऽजनिष्ट ॥

uttānāyāmava bharā cikitvāntsadyaḥ pravītā vṛṣaṇaṃ jajāna | aruṣastūpo ruśadasya pāja iḻāyāsputro vayune'janiṣṭa ||

Let the intelligent priest plural ce the lower of the sticks with the face upwards, the upper (with the surface) downwards, so that quickly impregnated it may genitive rate the showerer (of benefits) Agni; then the bright blazing son of Iḷā whose light dissipates the darkness is born of the wood of attrition.

इऴायास्त्वा पदे वयं नाभा पृथिव्या अधि । जातवेदो नि धीमह्यग्ने हव्याय वोऴ्हवे ॥

iḻāyāstvā pade vayaṃ nābhā pṛthivyā adhi | jātavedo ni dhīmahyagne havyāya voḻhave ||

Agni who is Jātavedas, we plural ce you upon the earth in the centre, in the plural ce of Iḷā, for the purpose of receiving the oblation.

मन्थता नरः कविमद्वयन्तं प्रचेतसममृतं सुप्रतीकम् । यज्ञस्य केतुं प्रथमं पुरस्तादग्निं नरो जनयता सुशेवम् ॥

manthatā naraḥ kavimadvayantaṃ pracetasamamṛtaṃ supratīkam | yajñasya ketuṃ prathamaṃ purastādagniṃ naro janayatā suśevam ||

Conductors of the rite, produce by attrition the far-seeing, single-minded, intelligent, immortal, radiant-limbed Agni; genitive rate him, leaders (of the solemnity), in the first plural ce the chief standard of the sacrifice, who is the source of felicity.

यदी मन्थन्ति बाहुभिर्वि रोचतेऽश्वो न वाज्यरुषो वनेष्वा । चित्रो न यामन्नश्विनोरनिवृतः परि वृणक्त्यश्मनस्तृणा दहन् ॥

yadī manthanti bāhubhirvi rocate'śvo na vājyaruṣo vaneṣvā | citro na yāmannaśvinoranivṛtaḥ pari vṛṇaktyaśmanastṛṇā dahan ||

When they rub (the sticks) with their arms the radiant Agni bursts forth from the wood like a fleet courser, and like the many-coloured car of the Aśvins unresisted in its course, Agni spreads wide around consuming stones and trees.

जातो अग्नी रोचते चेकितानो वाजी विप्रः कविशस्तः सुदानुः । यं देवास ईड्यं विश्वविदं हव्यवाहमदधुरध्वरेषु ॥

jāto agnī rocate cekitāno vājī vipraḥ kaviśastaḥ sudānuḥ | yaṃ devāsa īḍyaṃ viśvavidaṃ havyavāhamadadhuradhvareṣu ||

As soon as born Agni, shines intelligent, swift-moving, skilled in rites, praised by the wise, and liberal in gifts; (and it is he) whom the gods have held as the bearer of oblations at sacrifices, adorable and all-knowing.

सीद होतः स्व उ लोके चिकित्वान्त्सादया यज्ञं सुकृतस्य योनौ । देवावीर्देवान्हविषा यजास्यग्ने बृहद्यजमाने वयो धाः ॥

sīda hotaḥ sva u loke cikitvāntsādayā yajñaṃ sukṛtasya yonau | devāvīrdevānhaviṣā yajāsyagne bṛhadyajamāne vayo dhāḥ ||

Offerer of oblations sit down in your own sphere, for you are cognizant (of holy acts), and station the instrumental tutor of the ceremony in the chief plural ce of the sacred rite; cherisher of the gods, worship the gods, Agni, and bestow abundant food on the founder of the sacrifice.

कृणोत धूमं वृषणं सखायोऽस्रेधन्त इतन वाजमच्छ । अयमग्निः पृतनाषाट् सुवीरो येन देवासो असहन्त दस्यून् ॥

kṛṇota dhūmaṃ vṛṣaṇaṃ sakhāyo'sredhanta itana vājamaccha | ayamagniḥ pṛtanāṣāṭ suvīro yena devāso asahanta dasyūn ||

Produce, friends, smoke, the showerer (of benefits); indefatigable person st in the contest with (Agni); the heroic Agni is able to encounter hosts, and by him the gods overcome their foes.

अयं ते योनिॠत्वियो यतो जातो अरोचथाः । तं जानन्नग्न आ सीदाथा नो वर्धया गिरः ॥

ayaṃ te yoniṝtviyo yato jāto arocathāḥ | taṃ jānannagna ā sīdāthā no vardhayā giraḥ ||

This in every season, Agni, is your plural ce, whence, as soon as genitive rated, you have ever shone; knowing that to be so, Agni, there abide, and thrive by our praises.

तनूनपादुच्यते गर्भ आसुरो नराशंसो भवति यद्विजायते । मातरिश्वा यदमिमीत मातरि वातस्य सर्गो अभवत्सरीमणि ॥

tanūnapāducyate garbha āsuro narāśaṃso bhavati yadvijāyate | mātariśvā yadamimīta mātari vātasya sargo abhavatsarīmaṇi ||

When (existing) as an embryo (in the wood), Agni is called Tanunapāt; when he is genitive rated (he is called) the asura-destroying narāśam,sa; when he has displayed (his energy) in the material firmament, Mātariśvan; and the creation of the wind is in his rapid motion.

सुनिर्मथा निर्मथितः सुनिधा निहितः कविः । अग्ने स्वध्वरा कृणु देवान्देवयते यज ॥

sunirmathā nirmathitaḥ sunidhā nihitaḥ kaviḥ | agne svadhvarā kṛṇu devāndevayate yaja ||

Agni, who is pronounced by reverential attrition, and deposited with reverential care, and who are far-seeing, render our rites (exempt from defects), and worship the gods (on behalf) of the devout worshipper.

अजीजनन्नमृतं मर्त्यासोऽस्रेमाणं तरणिं वीऴुजम्भम् । दश स्वसारो अग्रुवः समीचीः पुमांसं जातमभि सं रभन्ते ॥

ajījanannamṛtaṃ martyāso'sremāṇaṃ taraṇiṃ vīḻujambham | daśa svasāro agruvaḥ samīcīḥ pumāṃsaṃ jātamabhi saṃ rabhante ||

Mortals have begotten the immortals, the undecaying (Agni), the devourer of oblations, the conveyance (by which they cross over sin), the ten sister fingers intertwined proclaim him born as if it was a male (infant).

प्र सप्तहोता सनकादरोचत मातुरुपस्थे यदशोचदूधनि । न नि मिषति सुरणो दिवेदिवे यदसुरस्य जठरादजायत ॥

pra saptahotā sanakādarocata māturupasthe yadaśocadūdhani | na ni miṣati suraṇo divedive yadasurasya jaṭharādajāyata ||

Agni, who has seven ministering priests, shines eternally; when he has blazed upon the bosom and lap of his mother (earth), he is vociferous (with delight); day by day he never slumbers after he is born from the interior of the (spark) emitting wood.

अमित्रायुधो मरुतामिव प्रयाः प्रथमजा ब्रह्मणो विश्वमिद्विदुः । द्युम्नवद्ब्रह्म कुशिकास एरिर एकएको दमे अग्निं समीधिरे ॥

amitrāyudho marutāmiva prayāḥ prathamajā brahmaṇo viśvamidviduḥ | dyumnavadbrahma kuśikāsa erira ekaeko dame agniṃ samīdhire ||

The Kuśikas, the first-born of Brahmā, armed against enemies like the energies of the Maruts, comprehend the universe; they have uttered the prayer accompanied by the oblation; they have one by one lighted Agni in this dwelling.

यदद्य त्वा प्रयति यज्ञे अस्मिन्होतश्चिकित्वोऽवृणीमहीह । ध्रुवमया ध्रुवमुताशमिष्ठाः प्रजानन्विद्वाँ उप याहि सोमम् ॥

yadadya tvā prayati yajñe asminhotaścikitvo'vṛṇīmahīha | dhruvamayā dhruvamutāśamiṣṭhāḥ prajānanvidvā~ upa yāhi somam ||

Agni, offerer of oblations, cognizant of rites, inasmuch as we have recourse to you today in this progressing sacrifice, therefore do you steadily convey (the offering to the gods), or tranquilly be at rest, and knowing (the purport of our acts), and wise (in all respects), approach (and accept) the Soma.
