[rv-2-34] • 15 श्लोकाः

धारावरा मरुतो धृष्ण्वोजसो मृगा न भीमास्तविषीभिरर्चिनः । अग्नयो न शुशुचाना ऋजीषिणो भृमिं धमन्तो अप गा अवृण्वत ॥

dhārāvarā maruto dhṛṣṇvojaso mṛgā na bhīmāstaviṣībhirarcinaḥ | agnayo na śuśucānā ṛjīṣiṇo bhṛmiṃ dhamanto apa gā avṛṇvata ||

The Maruts, shedders of showers, endowed with resistless might, like formidable lions, reverencing (the world) by their energies, resplendent as fires, laden with water, and blowing about the wandering cloud, give vent to its (collected) rain.

द्यावो न स्तृभिश्चितयन्त खादिनो व्यभ्रिया न द्युतयन्त वृष्टयः । रुद्रो यद्वो मरुतो रुक्मवक्षसो वृषाजनि पृश्न्याः शुक्र ऊधनि ॥

dyāvo na stṛbhiścitayanta khādino vyabhriyā na dyutayanta vṛṣṭayaḥ | rudro yadvo maruto rukmavakṣaso vṛṣājani pṛśnyāḥ śukra ūdhani ||

Since, golden-breasted Maruts, the vigorous (Rudra) begot you of the pure wombof Pṛśnī, therefore they, the devourers (of their enemies), are conspicuous (by their ornaments), as the heavens are by the constellations; and, senders of rain, they are brilliant as the cloud-born (lightning).

उक्षन्ते अश्वाँ अत्याँ इवाजिषु नदस्य कर्णैस्तुरयन्त आशुभिः । हिरण्यशिप्रा मरुतो दविध्वतः पृक्षं याथ पृषतीभिः समन्यवः ॥

ukṣante aśvā~ atyā~ ivājiṣu nadasya karṇaisturayanta āśubhiḥ | hiraṇyaśiprā maruto davidhvataḥ pṛkṣaṃ yātha pṛṣatībhiḥ samanyavaḥ ||

They sprinkle the wide-extended (lands) with water, as (men sprinkle) horses (when heated) in battles; and they rush along with swift (horses) on the skirts of the sounding (cloud); Maruts, golden-helmeted, andof one mind, agitating (the trees), come with your spotted deer to (receive the sacrificial) food.

पृक्षे ता विश्वा भुवना ववक्षिरे मित्राय वा सदमा जीरदानवः । पृषदश्वासो अनवभ्रराधस ऋजिप्यासो न वयुनेषु धूर्षदः ॥

pṛkṣe tā viśvā bhuvanā vavakṣire mitrāya vā sadamā jīradānavaḥ | pṛṣadaśvāso anavabhrarādhasa ṛjipyāso na vayuneṣu dhūrṣadaḥ ||

The prompt-giving Maruts ever confer upon the (offerer of sacrificial) food, as upon a friend, all these (world-supporting) waters; they who have spotted deer for steeds, who are possessed of inexhaustible riches, and who, seated in their chariots, (proceed) amongst the moving (clouds), like horses going straight (to the goal).

इन्धन्वभिर्धेनुभी रप्शदूधभिरध्वस्मभिः पथिभिर्भ्राजदृष्टयः । आ हंसासो न स्वसराणि गन्तन मधोर्मदाय मरुतः समन्यवः ॥

indhanvabhirdhenubhī rapśadūdhabhiradhvasmabhiḥ pathibhirbhrājadṛṣṭayaḥ | ā haṃsāso na svasarāṇi gantana madhormadāya marutaḥ samanyavaḥ ||

Maruts, who are of one mind, and are armed with shining lances, come with the bright, full-uddered kine, by obstructed paths, to partake of the exhilaration of the (Soma) juice, as swans (fly) to their nests.

आ नो ब्रह्माणि मरुतः समन्यवो नरां न शंसः सवनानि गन्तन । अश्वामिव पिप्यत धेनुमूधनि कर्ता धियं जरित्रे वाजपेशसम् ॥

ā no brahmāṇi marutaḥ samanyavo narāṃ na śaṃsaḥ savanāni gantana | aśvāmiva pipyata dhenumūdhani kartā dhiyaṃ jaritre vājapeśasam ||

Maruts, who are of one mind, come to the food that is offered at (our) sacrifices, as (you come) to the praises of men; nourish the cow, (the cloud), so that it may be like a mare with a full udder, and render the pious rite productive of abundant food to the worshipper.

तं नो दात मरुतो वाजिनं रथ आपानं ब्रह्म चितयद्दिवेदिवे । इषं स्तोतृभ्यो वृजनेषु कारवे सनिं मेधामरिष्टं दुष्टरं सहः ॥

taṃ no dāta maruto vājinaṃ ratha āpānaṃ brahma citayaddivedive | iṣaṃ stotṛbhyo vṛjaneṣu kārave saniṃ medhāmariṣṭaṃ duṣṭaraṃ sahaḥ ||

Bestow upon us, Maruts, that (son) who shall enjoy abundance, and who shall be repeating your appropriate praises day by day to (induce) your coming; give food to those who praise you; to him who glorifies you in battles; (grant him) liberality, intelligence, and unimpaired unsurpassable vigour.

यद्युञ्जते मरुतो रुक्मवक्षसोऽश्वान्रथेषु भग आ सुदानवः । धेनुर्न शिश्वे स्वसरेषु पिन्वते जनाय रातहविषे महीमिषम् ॥

yadyuñjate maruto rukmavakṣaso'śvānratheṣu bhaga ā sudānavaḥ | dhenurna śiśve svasareṣu pinvate janāya rātahaviṣe mahīmiṣam ||

When the golden-breasted munificent Maruts, yoke their horses to their chariots on an auspicious (occasion), they shed in their peculiar (directions) abundant food upon him who offers them oblations, as a cow (gives milk) to her calf.

यो नो मरुतो वृकताति मर्त्यो रिपुर्दधे वसवो रक्षता रिषः । वर्तयत तपुषा चक्रियाभि तमव रुद्रा अशसो हन्तना वधः ॥

yo no maruto vṛkatāti martyo ripurdadhe vasavo rakṣatā riṣaḥ | vartayata tapuṣā cakriyābhi tamava rudrā aśaso hantanā vadhaḥ ||

Maruts, granters of dwellings, protect us from the malignity of the man who cherishes wolf-like enmity against us; encompass him with your burning diseases; ward off the murderous (weapon) of the devourer.

चित्रं तद्वो मरुतो याम चेकिते पृश्न्या यदूधरप्यापयो दुहुः । यद्वा निदे नवमानस्य रुद्रियास्त्रितं जराय जुरतामदाभ्याः ॥

citraṃ tadvo maruto yāma cekite pṛśnyā yadūdharapyāpayo duhuḥ | yadvā nide navamānasya rudriyāstritaṃ jarāya juratāmadābhyāḥ ||

Maruts, your marvellous energy is well known, whereby, seizing the udder of heaven, you milked it (of the rain, destroyed) the reviler of your worshipper, and (came), irresistible sons of Rudra, to Trita for the destruction of enemies.

तान्वो महो मरुत एवयाव्नो विष्णोरेषस्य प्रभृथे हवामहे । हिरण्यवर्णान्ककुहान्यतस्रुचो ब्रह्मण्यन्तः शंस्यं राध ईमहे ॥

tānvo maho maruta evayāvno viṣṇoreṣasya prabhṛthe havāmahe | hiraṇyavarṇānkakuhānyatasruco brahmaṇyantaḥ śaṃsyaṃ rādha īmahe ||

We invoke you, mighty Maruts, who frequent such sacrifices (as this, to be present) at the offering of the diffusive and desirable (libation); lifting up our ladles, and reciting their praise, we solicit the golden-hued and lofty Maruts for excellent wealth.

ते दशग्वाः प्रथमा यज्ञमूहिरे ते नो हिन्वन्तूषसो व्युष्टिषु । उषा न रामीररुणैरपोर्णुते महो ज्योतिषा शुचता गोअर्णसा ॥

te daśagvāḥ prathamā yajñamūhire te no hinvantūṣaso vyuṣṭiṣu | uṣā na rāmīraruṇairaporṇute maho jyotiṣā śucatā goarṇasā ||

May they, who, the first celebrators of the ten-months' rite, accomplished this sacrifice, reanimate us at the rising dawn; for as the dawn with purple rays drives away the night, so (do they scatter the darkness) with great, and pure, and mist-dispelling radiance.

ते क्षोणीभिररुणेभिर्नाञ्जिभी रुद्रा ऋतस्य सदनेषु वावृधुः । निमेघमाना अत्येन पाजसा सुश्चन्द्रं वर्णं दधिरे सुपेशसम् ॥

te kṣoṇībhiraruṇebhirnāñjibhī rudrā ṛtasya sadaneṣu vāvṛdhuḥ | nimeghamānā atyena pājasā suścandraṃ varṇaṃ dadhire supeśasam ||

They, the Rudras, (equipped) with melodious (lutes), and decorated with purple ornaments, exult in the dwellings of the waters; and scattering the clouds with rappid vigour, they are endowed with delightful and beautiful forms.

ताँ इयानो महि वरूथमूतय उप घेदेना नमसा गृणीमसि । त्रितो न यान्पञ्च होतॄनभिष्टय आववर्तदवराञ्चक्रियावसे ॥

tā~ iyāno mahi varūthamūtaya upa ghedenā namasā gṛṇīmasi | trito na yānpañca hotṝnabhiṣṭaya āvavartadavarāñcakriyāvase ||

Imploring them for ample wealth, and (having recourse to him) for protection, we glorify them with this praise; like the five chief priests whom Trita detained for the (performance of) the sacrifice, and to protect it with their weapons.

यया रध्रं पारयथात्यंहो यया निदो मुञ्चथ वन्दितारम् । अर्वाची सा मरुतो या व ऊतिरो षु वाश्रेव सुमतिर्जिगातु ॥

yayā radhraṃ pārayathātyaṃho yayā nido muñcatha vanditāram | arvācī sā maruto yā va ūtiro ṣu vāśreva sumatirjigātu ||

Maruts, may that protection wherewith you convey the worshipper beyond sin, wherewith you rescue the reciter of your praise from the scoffer, be present with us; may your benign disposition tend towards us, like a lowing (cow towards her calf).
