उपेमसृक्षि वाजयुर्वचस्यां चनो दधीत नाद्यो गिरो मे । अपां नपादाशुहेमा कुवित्स सुपेशसस्करति जोषिषद्धि ॥

upemasṛkṣi vājayurvacasyāṃ cano dadhīta nādyo giro me | apāṃ napādāśuhemā kuvitsa supeśasaskarati joṣiṣaddhi ||

Desiring food, I put forth this laudatory hymn; may the sounding and swift-moving grandson of the waters bestow abundant food upon me his worshipper; may he make us of goodly appearance, for verily he is propitiated by praise.

इमं स्वस्मै हृद आ सुतष्टं मन्त्रं वोचेम कुविदस्य वेदत् । अपां नपादसुर्यस्य मह्ना विश्वान्यर्यो भुवना जजान ॥

imaṃ svasmai hṛda ā sutaṣṭaṃ mantraṃ vocema kuvidasya vedat | apāṃ napādasuryasya mahnā viśvānyaryo bhuvanā jajāna ||

Let us address to him the prayer that is conceived in our hearts, and may he fully understand (its purport); for he, the lord, the grandson of the waters, has genitive rated all beings by the greatness of his might.

समन्या यन्त्युप यन्त्यन्याः समानमूर्वं नद्यः पृणन्ति । तमू शुचिं शुचयो दीदिवांसमपां नपातं परि तस्थुरापः ॥

samanyā yantyupa yantyanyāḥ samānamūrvaṃ nadyaḥ pṛṇanti | tamū śuciṃ śucayo dīdivāṃsamapāṃ napātaṃ pari tasthurāpaḥ ||

Some waters collect together (from the rain); others, (already collected on earth), unite with them; as rivers, they flow together to propitiate the ocean-fire; the pure waters are gathered round the pure and brilliant grandsons of the waters.

तमस्मेरा युवतयो युवानं मर्मृज्यमानाः परि यन्त्यापः । स शुक्रेभिः शिक्वभी रेवदस्मे दीदायानिध्मो घृतनिर्णिगप्सु ॥

tamasmerā yuvatayo yuvānaṃ marmṛjyamānāḥ pari yantyāpaḥ | sa śukrebhiḥ śikvabhī revadasme dīdāyānidhmo ghṛtanirṇigapsu ||

The young and modest (waters) wait upon the youth, assiduous in bathing him, and he, although unfed with fuel, yet cleansed with clarified butter, shines with bright rays amidst the waters, the abundance (may be) to us.

अस्मै तिस्रो अव्यथ्याय नारीर्देवाय देवीर्दिधिषन्त्यन्नम् । कृता इवोप हि प्रसर्स्रे अप्सु स पीयूषं धयति पूर्वसूनाम् ॥

asmai tisro avyathyāya nārīrdevāya devīrdidhiṣantyannam | kṛtā ivopa hi prasarsre apsu sa pīyūṣaṃ dhayati pūrvasūnām ||

THree divine feminine les present food to that uninjurable divinity; as if formed in the waters they spread abroad, and he drinks the ambrosia of the first-created (elements).

अश्वस्यात्र जनिमास्य च स्वर्द्रुहो रिषः सम्पृचः पाहि सूरीन् । आमासु पूर्षु परो अप्रमृष्यं नारातयो वि नशन्नानृतानि ॥

aśvasyātra janimāsya ca svardruho riṣaḥ sampṛcaḥ pāhi sūrīn | āmāsu pūrṣu paro apramṛṣyaṃ nārātayo vi naśannānṛtāni ||

In him is the birth of the horse, of him is (the origin of) the world; do you, grandson of the (waters), protect the pious worshippers from the malevolence of the oppressor; those who give no offerings, those who practise untruths, attain not the inconceivable deity, whether abiding in the immature or the perfect waters.

स्व आ दमे सुदुघा यस्य धेनुः स्वधां पीपाय सुभ्वन्नमत्ति । सो अपां नपादूर्जयन्नप्स्वन्तर्वसुदेयाय विधते वि भाति ॥

sva ā dame sudughā yasya dhenuḥ svadhāṃ pīpāya subhvannamatti | so apāṃ napādūrjayannapsvantarvasudeyāya vidhate vi bhāti ||

He, the grandson of the waters, who abides in his own dwelling; of whom is the readily-milked cow; who augments the nectar (of the skies), and (thence) eats the sacrificial food; he, gathering strength in the midst of the waters, shines for the sake of conferring wealth upon his worshipper.

यो अप्स्वा शुचिना दैव्येन ऋतावाजस्र उर्विया विभाति । वया इदन्या भुवनान्यस्य प्र जायन्ते वीरुधश्च प्रजाभिः ॥

yo apsvā śucinā daivyena ṛtāvājasra urviyā vibhāti | vayā idanyā bhuvanānyasya pra jāyante vīrudhaśca prajābhiḥ ||

All other beings are, as it were, branches of him, who, truthful, eternal, and vast, shines amid the waters with pure and divine (radiance); and the shrubs, with their products, are born (of him).

अपां नपादा ह्यस्थादुपस्थं जिह्मानामूर्ध्वो विद्युतं वसानः । तस्य ज्येष्ठं महिमानं वहन्तीर्हिरण्यवर्णाः परि यन्ति यह्वीः ॥

apāṃ napādā hyasthādupasthaṃ jihmānāmūrdhvo vidyutaṃ vasānaḥ | tasya jyeṣṭhaṃ mahimānaṃ vahantīrhiraṇyavarṇāḥ pari yanti yahvīḥ ||

The grandson of the waters has ascended the firmament above (the region) of the tortuously-moving (clouds), arrayed in lightning; the broad and golden-coloured (rivers) spread around, bearing (to all quarters) his exceeding glory.

हिरण्यरूपः स हिरण्यसंदृगपां नपात्सेदु हिरण्यवर्णः । हिरण्ययात्परि योनेर्निषद्या हिरण्यदा ददत्यन्नमस्मै ॥

hiraṇyarūpaḥ sa hiraṇyasaṃdṛgapāṃ napātsedu hiraṇyavarṇaḥ | hiraṇyayātpari yonerniṣadyā hiraṇyadā dadatyannamasmai ||

The grandson of the waters is of olden form, of golden aspect, of golden hue, and (shines) seated upon a seat of gold; the givers of gold (at solemn rites) present to him (sacrificial) food.

तदस्यानीकमुत चारु नामापीच्यं वर्धते नप्तुरपाम् । यमिन्धते युवतयः समित्था हिरण्यवर्णं घृतमन्नमस्य ॥

tadasyānīkamuta cāru nāmāpīcyaṃ vardhate napturapām | yamindhate yuvatayaḥ samitthā hiraṇyavarṇaṃ ghṛtamannamasya ||

Beautiful is his form (of aggregated lustre, beautiful) is the name of the grandson of the waters; (both) flourish, though hidden (by the clouds); the youthful w2aters collectively kindle the golden-coloured divinity in the firmament, for water is his food.

अस्मै बहूनामवमाय सख्ये यज्ञैर्विधेम नमसा हविर्भिः । सं सानु मार्ज्मि दिधिषामि बिल्मैर्दधाम्यन्नैः परि वन्द ऋग्भिः ॥

asmai bahūnāmavamāya sakhye yajñairvidhema namasā havirbhiḥ | saṃ sānu mārjmi didhiṣāmi bilmairdadhāmyannaiḥ pari vanda ṛgbhiḥ ||

To him our friend, the first of many (deities), we offer worship with sacrifices, oblations, and prostration; I decorate the high plural ce (of his presence); I nourish him with fuel; I sustain him with (sacrificial) viands; I glorify him with hymns.

स ईं वृषाजनयत्तासु गर्भं स ईं शिशुर्धयति तं रिहन्ति । सो अपां नपादनभिम्लातवर्णोऽन्यस्येवेह तन्वा विवेष ॥

sa īṃ vṛṣājanayattāsu garbhaṃ sa īṃ śiśurdhayati taṃ rihanti | so apāṃ napādanabhimlātavarṇo'nyasyeveha tanvā viveṣa ||

Vigorous, he has genitive rated himself as an embryo in those (waters); he is their infant; he sucks them; they bedew him (with moisture); the grandson of the waters of untarnished splendour has descended to this (earth) in the form of a different (fire).

अस्मिन्पदे परमे तस्थिवांसमध्वस्मभिर्विश्वहा दीदिवांसम् । आपो नप्त्रे घृतमन्नं वहन्तीः स्वयमत्कैः परि दीयन्ति यह्वीः ॥

asminpade parame tasthivāṃsamadhvasmabhirviśvahā dīdivāṃsam | āpo naptre ghṛtamannaṃ vahantīḥ svayamatkaiḥ pari dīyanti yahvīḥ ||

The abundant waters, bearing sustenance to their grandson, flow round him with spontaneous movements; when abiding in his supreme sphere, and shining daily with imperishable (rays).

अयांसमग्ने सुक्षितिं जनायायांसमु मघवद्भ्यः सुवृक्तिम् । विश्वं तद्भद्रं यदवन्ति देवा बृहद्वदेम विदथे सुवीराः ॥

ayāṃsamagne sukṣitiṃ janāyāyāṃsamu maghavadbhyaḥ suvṛktim | viśvaṃ tadbhadraṃ yadavanti devā bṛhadvadema vidathe suvīrāḥ ||

I have come, Agni, to you, (the giver) of good dwellings, for the sake of offspring; I have come with a propitiatory hymn for the sake of the opulent (offerers of oblations); may all the good which the gods defend (be ours); that, blessed with excellent descendants, we may worthily glorify you at this sacrifice.
