[rv-2-30] • 11 श्लोकाः

ऋतं देवाय कृण्वते सवित्र इन्द्रायाहिघ्ने न रमन्त आपः । अहरहर्यात्यक्तुरपां कियात्या प्रथमः सर्ग आसाम् ॥

ṛtaṃ devāya kṛṇvate savitra indrāyāhighne na ramanta āpaḥ | aharaharyātyakturapāṃ kiyātyā prathamaḥ sarga āsām ||

The waters cease not (to flow in libations) to the divine Indra, the sender of rain, the animator (of all), the slayer of Ahi; day by day proceeds the current of the waters; at what period of time was their first creation.

यो वृत्राय सिनमत्राभरिष्यत्प्र तं जनित्री विदुष उवाच । पथो रदन्तीरनु जोषमस्मै दिवेदिवे धुनयो यन्त्यर्थम् ॥

yo vṛtrāya sinamatrābhariṣyatpra taṃ janitrī viduṣa uvāca | patho radantīranu joṣamasmai divedive dhunayo yantyartham ||

His mother, (Aditi), declared to him the man who had offered (sacrificial) food to Vṛtra;obedient to his plural asure, the rivers, tracing out their paths, flow day by day to their object, (the ocean).

ऊर्ध्वो ह्यस्थादध्यन्तरिक्षेऽधा वृत्राय प्र वधं जभार । मिहं वसान उप हीमदुद्रोत्तिग्मायुधो अजयच्छत्रुमिन्द्रः ॥

ūrdhvo hyasthādadhyantarikṣe'dhā vṛtrāya pra vadhaṃ jabhāra | mihaṃ vasāna upa hīmadudrottigmāyudho ajayacchatrumindraḥ ||

Inasmuch as he had soared aloft above the firmament Indra hurled against Vṛtra his destructive (thunderbolt); enveloped in a cloud, he rushed upon Indra, but the wielder of the sharp-edged weapon triumphed over his foe.

बृहस्पते तपुषाश्नेव विध्य वृकद्वरसो असुरस्य वीरान् । यथा जघन्थ धृषता पुरा चिदेवा जहि शत्रुमस्माकमिन्द्र ॥

bṛhaspate tapuṣāśneva vidhya vṛkadvaraso asurasya vīrān | yathā jaghantha dhṛṣatā purā cidevā jahi śatrumasmākamindra ||

Pierce, Bṛhaspati, with a radiant shaft, as with a thunderbolt, the sons of the asura guarding his gates; in like manner as you did formerly slay Vṛtra by your own prowess, so do you now destroy our enemy.

अव क्षिप दिवो अश्मानमुच्चा येन शत्रुं मन्दसानो निजूर्वाः । तोकस्य सातौ तनयस्य भूरेरस्माँ अर्धं कृणुतादिन्द्र गोनाम् ॥

ava kṣipa divo aśmānamuccā yena śatruṃ mandasāno nijūrvāḥ | tokasya sātau tanayasya bhūrerasmā~ ardhaṃ kṛṇutādindra gonām ||

Do you, who are on high, cast down fromheaven the adamantine (thunderbolt), wherewith, when exhilarated, you did slay your foe; and make us affluent in the possession of many sons, and grandsons, and cattle.

प्र हि क्रतुं वृहथो यं वनुथो रध्रस्य स्थो यजमानस्य चोदौ । इन्द्रासोमा युवमस्माँ अविष्टमस्मिन्भयस्थे कृणुतमु लोकम् ॥

pra hi kratuṃ vṛhatho yaṃ vanutho radhrasya stho yajamānasya codau | indrāsomā yuvamasmā~ aviṣṭamasminbhayasthe kṛṇutamu lokam ||

Indra and Soma, eradicate the worker (of evil), whom you hate; be the encouragers of the liberal instrumental tutor of the rite; protect us in this plural ce of peril, and make the world (free from fear).

न मा तमन्न श्रमन्नोत तन्द्रन्न वोचाम मा सुनोतेति सोमम् । यो मे पृणाद्यो ददद्यो निबोधाद्यो मा सुन्वन्तमुप गोभिरायत् ॥

na mā tamanna śramannota tandranna vocāma mā sunoteti somam | yo me pṛṇādyo dadadyo nibodhādyo mā sunvantamupa gobhirāyat ||

Let not Indra vexme, or weary me, or make me slothful; never may we say (to another), do not offer the Soma; (for it is Indra) who will fulfil (my wishes), who will give (me riches), who will hear (my prayers), who will reward me, presenting libations, with cattle.

सरस्वति त्वमस्माँ अविड्ढि मरुत्वती धृषती जेषि शत्रून् । त्यं चिच्छर्धन्तं तविषीयमाणमिन्द्रो हन्ति वृषभं शण्डिकानाम् ॥

sarasvati tvamasmā~ aviḍḍhi marutvatī dhṛṣatī jeṣi śatrūn | tyaṃ cicchardhantaṃ taviṣīyamāṇamindro hanti vṛṣabhaṃ śaṇḍikānām ||

Sarasvatī, do you protect us; associated with the Maruts and firm (of purpose), overcome our foes, whiilst Indra slays the chief of the Śaṇḍikas, defying him and confiding in his strength.

यो नः सनुत्य उत वा जिघत्नुरभिख्याय तं तिगितेन विध्य । बृहस्पत आयुधैर्जेषि शत्रून्द्रुहे रीषन्तं परि धेहि राजन् ॥

yo naḥ sanutya uta vā jighatnurabhikhyāya taṃ tigitena vidhya | bṛhaspata āyudhairjeṣi śatrūndruhe rīṣantaṃ pari dhehi rājan ||

Detecting him who is lying in ambush (against us), who is purposing our death, pierce him, Bṛhaspati, with your sharp (thunderbolt), and overthrow (our) enemies with (your) weapons; hurl, monarch, your destroying (shaft) against the oppressor.

अस्माकेभिः सत्वभिः शूर शूरैर्वीर्या कृधि यानि ते कर्त्वानि । ज्योगभूवन्ननुधूपितासो हत्वी तेषामा भरा नो वसूनि ॥

asmākebhiḥ satvabhiḥ śūra śūrairvīryā kṛdhi yāni te kartvāni | jyogabhūvannanudhūpitāso hatvī teṣāmā bharā no vasūni ||

Achieve, hero, along with our valiant heroes, the exploits that are to be achieved by you; long have (our enemies) been inflated (with pride); slay them, and bring to us their treasures.

तं वः शर्धं मारुतं सुम्नयुर्गिरोप ब्रुवे नमसा दैव्यं जनम् । यथा रयिं सर्ववीरं नशामहा अपत्यसाचं श्रुत्यं दिवेदिवे ॥

taṃ vaḥ śardhaṃ mārutaṃ sumnayurgiropa bruve namasā daivyaṃ janam | yathā rayiṃ sarvavīraṃ naśāmahā apatyasācaṃ śrutyaṃ divedive ||

Desirous of felicity, Maruts, I glorify with praise and homage you divine, manifest and congregated strength; that we may thereby daily enjoy distinguished affluence, accompanied by valiant dependants and posterity.
