[rv-2-28] • 11 श्लोकाः

इदं कवेरादित्यस्य स्वराजो विश्वानि सान्त्यभ्यस्तु मह्ना । अति यो मन्द्रो यजथाय देवः सुकीर्तिं भिक्षे वरुणस्य भूरेः ॥

idaṃ kaverādityasya svarājo viśvāni sāntyabhyastu mahnā | ati yo mandro yajathāya devaḥ sukīrtiṃ bhikṣe varuṇasya bhūreḥ ||

(The worshipper repeats) this praise of the sage; the self-radiant Āditya; may he preside over all beings by his power; I beg for fame of the sovereign Varuṇa, a deity who, when much plural ased (is propitious) to hsi adorer.

तव व्रते सुभगासः स्याम स्वाध्यो वरुण तुष्टुवांसः । उपायन उषसां गोमतीनामग्नयो न जरमाणा अनु द्यून् ॥

tava vrate subhagāsaḥ syāma svādhyo varuṇa tuṣṭuvāṃsaḥ | upāyana uṣasāṃ gomatīnāmagnayo na jaramāṇā anu dyūn ||

May we, Varuṇa, deeply meditating on you, earnestly praising you, and (engaged) in your worship, be prosperous; glorifying you daily, like the fires (that are kindled in your honour) at the coming of the luminous dawns.

तव स्याम पुरुवीरस्य शर्मन्नुरुशंसस्य वरुण प्रणेतः । यूयं नः पुत्रा अदितेरदब्धा अभि क्षमध्वं युज्याय देवाः ॥

tava syāma puruvīrasya śarmannuruśaṃsasya varuṇa praṇetaḥ | yūyaṃ naḥ putrā aditeradabdhā abhi kṣamadhvaṃ yujyāya devāḥ ||

Varuṇa, chief guide (of men), may we abide in the felicity of you, who are endowed with great powers, and are glorified by many; divine sons of Aditi, unharmed (by foes), have compassion upon us through your benevolence.

प्र सीमादित्यो असृजद्विधर्ताँ ऋतं सिन्धवो वरुणस्य यन्ति । न श्राम्यन्ति न वि मुचन्त्येते वयो न पप्तू रघुया परिज्मन् ॥

pra sīmādityo asṛjadvidhartā~ ṛtaṃ sindhavo varuṇasya yanti | na śrāmyanti na vi mucantyete vayo na paptū raghuyā parijman ||

The Āditya, the upholder, has created all this water; the rivers flow by the power of Varuṇa; they never weary, they never stop; they have descended with swiftness, like birds upon the circumambient (earth).

वि मच्छ्रथाय रशनामिवाग ऋध्याम ते वरुण खामृतस्य । मा तन्तुश्छेदि वयतो धियं मे मा मात्रा शार्यपसः पुर ऋतोः ॥

vi macchrathāya raśanāmivāga ṛdhyāma te varuṇa khāmṛtasya | mā tantuśchedi vayato dhiyaṃ me mā mātrā śāryapasaḥ pura ṛtoḥ ||

Cast off from me sin, Varuṇa, as if it were a rope; may we obtain from you a channel (filled) with water; cut not the thread of me (engaged in) weaving pious works; blight not the elements of holy rites before the season (of their maturity).

अपो सु म्यक्ष वरुण भियसं मत्सम्राऴृतावोऽनु मा गृभाय । दामेव वत्साद्वि मुमुग्ध्यंहो नहि त्वदारे निमिषश्चनेशे ॥

apo su myakṣa varuṇa bhiyasaṃ matsamrāḻṛtāvo'nu mā gṛbhāya | dāmeva vatsādvi mumugdhyaṃho nahi tvadāre nimiṣaścaneśe ||

Keep off all danger from me, Varuṇa; supreme monarch, endowed with truth, bestow your favour upon me; cast off (from me) sin, like a tether from a calf; no one rules for the twinkling of an eye, apart from you.

मा नो वधैर्वरुण ये त इष्टावेनः कृण्वन्तमसुर भ्रीणन्ति । मा ज्योतिषः प्रवसथानि गन्म वि षू मृधः शिश्रथो जीवसे नः ॥

mā no vadhairvaruṇa ye ta iṣṭāvenaḥ kṛṇvantamasura bhrīṇanti | mā jyotiṣaḥ pravasathāni ganma vi ṣū mṛdhaḥ śiśratho jīvase naḥ ||

Harm us not, Varuṇa, with those destructive (weapons), repeller (of foes), demolish him who does evil at your sacrifice; let us not depart (before our time) from the regions of light; scatter the malevolent, that we may live.

नमः पुरा ते वरुणोत नूनमुतापरं तुविजात ब्रवाम । त्वे हि कं पर्वते न श्रितान्यप्रच्युतानि दूऴभ व्रतानि ॥

namaḥ purā te varuṇota nūnamutāparaṃ tuvijāta bravāma | tve hi kaṃ parvate na śritānyapracyutāni dūḻabha vratāni ||

As we have offered adoration to you, Varuṇa, of old, in like manner as we offer it now, so may we offer it in future (to you), who are everywhere present; for in you, who are difficult of attainment, as in an (immoveable) mountain, all holy acts are assembled, and are not to be dissevered.

पर ऋणा सावीरध मत्कृतानि माहं राजन्नन्यकृतेन भोजम् । अव्युष्टा इन्नु भूयसीरुषास आ नो जीवान्वरुण तासु शाधि ॥

para ṛṇā sāvīradha matkṛtāni māhaṃ rājannanyakṛtena bhojam | avyuṣṭā innu bhūyasīruṣāsa ā no jīvānvaruṇa tāsu śādhi ||

Discharge, Varuṇa, the debts (contracted), by my progenitors, and those now (contracted) by me; and may I not, royal Varuṇa, be dependent (on the debts contracted) by another; many are the mornings that have, as it were, indeed not dawned; make us, Varuṇa, alive in them.

यो मे राजन्युज्यो वा सखा वा स्वप्ने भयं भीरवे मह्यमाह । स्तेनो वा यो दिप्सति नो वृको वा त्वं तस्माद्वरुण पाह्यस्मान् ॥

yo me rājanyujyo vā sakhā vā svapne bhayaṃ bhīrave mahyamāha | steno vā yo dipsati no vṛko vā tvaṃ tasmādvaruṇa pāhyasmān ||

Protect us, Varuṇa, against every peril which a kinsman or a friend threatens me with alarmed in sleep; or from a thief or a wolf that attempts to destroy us.

माहं मघोनो वरुण प्रियस्य भूरिदाव्न आ विदं शूनमापेः । मा रायो राजन्त्सुयमादव स्थां बृहद्वदेम विदथे सुवीराः ॥

māhaṃ maghono varuṇa priyasya bhūridāvna ā vidaṃ śūnamāpeḥ | mā rāyo rājantsuyamādava sthāṃ bṛhadvadema vidathe suvīrāḥ ||

May I nver (have to) represent, Varuṇa, the destitution of a (once) opulent, dear, and munificent kinsman; may I never, royal (Varuṇa), be devoid of well-regulated riches; and may we, blessed with excellent descendants, worthily glorify you at this sacrifice.
