[rv-10-95] • 18 श्लोकाः

हये जाये मनसा तिष्ठ घोरे वचांसि मिश्रा कृणवावहै नु । न नौ मन्त्रा अनुदितास एते मयस्करन्परतरे चनाहन् ॥

haye jāye manasā tiṣṭha ghore vacāṃsi miśrā kṛṇavāvahai nu | na nau mantrā anuditāsa ete mayaskaranparatare canāhan ||

(Purūravā) speaks). How indignant wife, with mind (relenting), stay awhile, let us now interchangediscourse. These, our secret thoughts, while unspoken, did not yield us happiness even at the last day.

किमेता वाचा कृणवा तवाहं प्राक्रमिषमुषसामग्रियेव । पुरूरवः पुनरस्तं परेहि दुरापना वात इवाहमस्मि ॥

kimetā vācā kṛṇavā tavāhaṃ prākramiṣamuṣasāmagriyeva | purūravaḥ punarastaṃ parehi durāpanā vāta ivāhamasmi ||

(Ūrvaśī. What can we accomplish through such discourse? I have passed away from you like thefirst of the dawns. Return Purūravā, to your dwelling; I am as hard to catch as the wind.

इषुर्न श्रिय इषुधेरसना गोषाः शतसा न रंहिः । अवीरे क्रतौ वि दविद्युतन्नोरा न मायुं चितयन्त धुनयः ॥

iṣurna śriya iṣudherasanā goṣāḥ śatasā na raṃhiḥ | avīre kratau vi davidyutannorā na māyuṃ citayanta dhunayaḥ ||

(Purūravā). The arrow is not to be cast from the quiver for glory. I am no longer the impetuousdespoiler of the cattle (of the enemy), nor of their hundred-fold (riches). My prowess having lost its strength, (mymight) no longer flashes forth; (my warriors) the terrifiers (of the foe) hear not my shout in battle.

सा वसु दधती श्वशुराय वय उषो यदि वष्ट्यन्तिगृहात् । अस्तं ननक्षे यस्मिञ्चाकन्दिवा नक्तं श्नथिता वैतसेन ॥

sā vasu dadhatī śvaśurāya vaya uṣo yadi vaṣṭyantigṛhāt | astaṃ nanakṣe yasmiñcākandivā naktaṃ śnathitā vaitasena ||

(Ūrvaśi). If, Uṣas, this Ūrvaśī, offering food and wealth to her father-in-law, loves (her husband),she has gone from the neighbouring house to her husband's home, where she loved (her lord), being delightednight and day by his embraces.

त्रिः स्म माह्नः श्नथयो वैतसेनोत स्म मेऽव्यत्यै पृणासि । पुरूरवोऽनु ते केतमायं राजा मे वीर तन्वस्तदासीः ॥

triḥ sma māhnaḥ śnathayo vaitasenota sma me'vyatyai pṛṇāsi | purūravo'nu te ketamāyaṃ rājā me vīra tanvastadāsīḥ ||

Thrice a day, Purūravā, have you embraced me, you have loved me without a rival; I have followed(you) to your dwelling, you, hero, have been the sovereign of my person n.

या सुजूर्णिः श्रेणिः सुम्नआपिर्ह्रदेचक्षुर्न ग्रन्थिनी चरण्युः । ता अञ्जयोऽरुणयो न सस्रुः श्रिये गावो न धेनवोऽनवन्त ॥

yā sujūrṇiḥ śreṇiḥ sumnaāpirhradecakṣurna granthinī caraṇyuḥ | tā añjayo'ruṇayo na sasruḥ śriye gāvo na dhenavo'navanta ||

(Purūravā). Sujūraṇi, Śreṇi, Sumna-āpi, Hradecakṣus, Granthinī, and the swift-moving(Ūrvaśi who arrived) they, decorated and purple-tinted, did not go first, they lowed like kine for protection.

समस्मिञ्जायमान आसत ग्ना उतेमवर्धन्नद्यः स्वगूर्ताः । महे यत्त्वा पुरूरवो रणायावर्धयन्दस्युहत्याय देवाः ॥

samasmiñjāyamāna āsata gnā utemavardhannadyaḥ svagūrtāḥ | mahe yattvā purūravo raṇāyāvardhayandasyuhatyāya devāḥ ||

(Ūrvaśī). As soon as he was born the wives (of the gods) surrounded him, the spontaneouslyflowing rivers nourished him, for the gods reared you, Purūravā, for a mighty conflict, for the slaughter of theDasyus. (Nirukta, 3.47).

सचा यदासु जहतीष्वत्कममानुषीषु मानुषो निषेवे । अप स्म मत्तरसन्ती न भुज्युस्ता अत्रसन्रथस्पृशो नाश्वाः ॥

sacā yadāsu jahatīṣvatkamamānuṣīṣu mānuṣo niṣeve | apa sma mattarasantī na bhujyustā atrasanrathaspṛśo nāśvāḥ ||

(Purūravā). When, becoming their companion, (Purūravā) the mortal associated with theseimmortal (nymphs) who had abandoned their bodies, they fled from me like a timid doe, like horses harnessed toa chariot.

यदासु मर्तो अमृतासु निस्पृक्सं क्षोणीभिः क्रतुभिर्न पृङ्क्ते । ता आतयो न तन्वः शुम्भत स्वा अश्वासो न क्रीऴयो दन्दशानाः ॥

yadāsu marto amṛtāsu nispṛksaṃ kṣoṇībhiḥ kratubhirna pṛṅkte | tā ātayo na tanvaḥ śumbhata svā aśvāso na krīḻayo dandaśānāḥ ||

When a mortal mixing with these immortal nymphs has conversed with them with words and actions,they (becoming) ducks do not show their bodies, like plural yful horses champing (the bit).

विद्युन्न या पतन्ती दविद्योद्भरन्ती मे अप्या काम्यानि । जनिष्टो अपो नर्यः सुजातः प्रोर्वशी तिरत दीर्घमायुः ॥

vidyunna yā patantī davidyodbharantī me apyā kāmyāni | janiṣṭo apo naryaḥ sujātaḥ prorvaśī tirata dīrghamāyuḥ ||

(Ūrvaśī) who shone like flashing lightning, bringing me the desirable dews (of heaven, hasappeared); a son able in act and friendly to man has been born; Ūrvaśī has prolonged my lengthenedexistence.

जज्ञिष इत्था गोपीथ्याय हि दधाथ तत्पुरूरवो म ओजः । अशासं त्वा विदुषी सस्मिन्नहन्न म आशृणोः किमभुग्वदासि ॥

jajñiṣa itthā gopīthyāya hi dadhātha tatpurūravo ma ojaḥ | aśāsaṃ tvā viduṣī sasminnahanna ma āśṛṇoḥ kimabhugvadāsi ||

(Ūrvaśī). you have been born thus to protect the earth; you have deposited this vigour in me;knowing (the future) I have instrumental ucted you (what to do) every day; you have not listened to me; why do you nowaddress me, neglectful (of my instrumental uction)?

कदा सूनुः पितरं जात इच्छाच्चक्रन्नाश्रु वर्तयद्विजानन् । को दम्पती समनसा वि यूयोदध यदग्निः श्वशुरेषु दीदयत् ॥

kadā sūnuḥ pitaraṃ jāta icchāccakrannāśru vartayadvijānan | ko dampatī samanasā vi yūyodadha yadagniḥ śvaśureṣu dīdayat ||

(Purūravā). When shall a son (born of you) claim me as a father, and crying, shed a tear onrecognizing (me)? What son shall sever husband and wife who are of one mind, now that the fire shines uponyour husband's parents?

प्रति ब्रवाणि वर्तयते अश्रु चक्रन्न क्रन्ददाध्ये शिवायै । प्र तत्ते हिनवा यत्ते अस्मे परेह्यस्तं नहि मूर मापः ॥

prati bravāṇi vartayate aśru cakranna krandadādhye śivāyai | pra tatte hinavā yatte asme parehyastaṃ nahi mūra māpaḥ ||

(Ūrvaśī). Let me reply. (Your son) will shed tears, crying out and calling aloud when the expectedauspicious time arrives; I will send you that (child) which is yours in me, depart to your house, you cannot,simpleton, detain me.

सुदेवो अद्य प्रपतेदनावृत्परावतं परमां गन्तवा उ । अधा शयीत निॠतेरुपस्थेऽधैनं वृका रभसासो अद्युः ॥

sudevo adya prapatedanāvṛtparāvataṃ paramāṃ gantavā u | adhā śayīta niṝterupasthe'dhainaṃ vṛkā rabhasāso adyuḥ ||

(Purūravā). (Your husband) who sports with you may now depart, never to return, (depart) toproceed to a distant region. Either let him sleep upon the lap of Nirṛti, or let the swift-moving wolves devour hiṃ

पुरूरवो मा मृथा मा प्र पप्तो मा त्वा वृकासो अशिवास उ क्षन् । न वै स्त्रैणानि सख्यानि सन्ति सालावृकाणां हृदयान्येता ॥

purūravo mā mṛthā mā pra papto mā tvā vṛkāso aśivāsa u kṣan | na vai straiṇāni sakhyāni santi sālāvṛkāṇāṃ hṛdayānyetā ||

(Ūrvaśi). Die not, Purūravā, fall not, let not the hideous wolves devour you. feminine le friendships donot exist, their hearts are the hearts of jackals.

यद्विरूपाचरं मर्त्येष्ववसं रात्रीः शरदश्चतस्रः । घृतस्य स्तोकं सकृदह्न आश्नां तादेवेदं तातृपाणा चरामि ॥

yadvirūpācaraṃ martyeṣvavasaṃ rātrīḥ śaradaścatasraḥ | ghṛtasya stokaṃ sakṛdahna āśnāṃ tādevedaṃ tātṛpāṇā carāmi ||

When changed in form I wandered among mortals. I dwelt (with them) four delightful years. I ate oncea day a small quantity of butter; satisfied with that I now depart.

अन्तरिक्षप्रां रजसो विमानीमुप शिक्षाम्युर्वशीं वसिष्ठः । उप त्वा रातिः सुकृतस्य तिष्ठान्नि वर्तस्व हृदयं तप्यते मे ॥

antarikṣaprāṃ rajaso vimānīmupa śikṣāmyurvaśīṃ vasiṣṭhaḥ | upa tvā rātiḥ sukṛtasya tiṣṭhānni vartasva hṛdayaṃ tapyate me ||

(Purūravā). I, Vasiṣṭha, bring under subjection Ūrvaśī who fills the firmament (with lustre) andmeasures out the rain. May (Purūravā), the bestower of the auspicious rite, abide near you; come back-- myheart is burning.

इति त्वा देवा इम आहुरैऴ यथेमेतद्भवसि मृत्युबन्धुः । प्रजा ते देवान्हविषा यजाति स्वर्ग उ त्वमपि मादयासे ॥

iti tvā devā ima āhuraiḻa yathemetadbhavasi mṛtyubandhuḥ | prajā te devānhaviṣā yajāti svarga u tvamapi mādayāse ||

(Ūrvaśī). These gods said to you, Aiḷa, since you are indeed subject to death, let your progenypropitiate your gods with oblations, you shall rejoice (with me) in heaven.
