[rv-10-22] • 15 श्लोकाः

कुह श्रुत इन्द्रः कस्मिन्नद्य जने मित्रो न श्रूयते । ऋषीणां वा यः क्षये गुहा वा चर्कृषे गिरा ॥

kuha śruta indraḥ kasminnadya jane mitro na śrūyate | ṛṣīṇāṃ vā yaḥ kṣaye guhā vā carkṛṣe girā ||

In what plural ce today is Indra renowned? In what nation is he famed like Mitra? (Indra), who isworshipper; or in secret = or, in the forest].

इह श्रुत इन्द्रो अस्मे अद्य स्तवे वज्र्यृचीषमः । मित्रो न यो जनेष्वा यशश्चक्रे असाम्या ॥

iha śruta indro asme adya stave vajryṛcīṣamaḥ | mitro na yo janeṣvā yaśaścakre asāmyā ||

Here is Indra renowned; today he is praised by us, the wielder of the thunderbolt, the deserving ofpraise; he who, like Mitra, bestows upon men unequalled abundance.

महो यस्पतिः शवसो असाम्या महो नृम्णस्य तूतुजिः । भर्ता वज्रस्य धृष्णोः पिता पुत्रमिव प्रियम् ॥

maho yaspatiḥ śavaso asāmyā maho nṛmṇasya tūtujiḥ | bhartā vajrasya dhṛṣṇoḥ pitā putramiva priyam ||

(May Indra protect us) who is the lord of great strenght, of unequalled (power), the distributor of greatwealth, the cherisher of the dreadful thunderbolt as a father (cherishes) a dear son.

युजानो अश्वा वातस्य धुनी देवो देवस्य वज्रिवः । स्यन्ता पथा विरुक्मता सृजानः स्तोष्यध्वनः ॥

yujāno aśvā vātasya dhunī devo devasya vajrivaḥ | syantā pathā virukmatā sṛjānaḥ stoṣyadhvanaḥ ||

Thunderer, you who are divine, yoking your horses which are swifter than the divine wind, and glidingalong the resplendent road, you, opening out the way (to battle), are glorified.

त्वं त्या चिद्वातस्याश्वागा ऋज्रा त्मना वहध्यै । ययोर्देवो न मर्त्यो यन्ता नकिर्विदाय्यः ॥

tvaṃ tyā cidvātasyāśvāgā ṛjrā tmanā vahadhyai | yayordevo na martyo yantā nakirvidāyyaḥ ||

You have come to these two horses (which have the speed) of the wind, straight-going, for them todraw you of themselves, whom no deity, no mortal is able to restrain; whose fleetness no one comprehends.

अध ग्मन्तोशना पृच्छते वां कदर्था न आ गृहम् । आ जग्मथुः पराकाद्दिवश्च ग्मश्च मर्त्यम् ॥

adha gmantośanā pṛcchate vāṃ kadarthā na ā gṛham | ā jagmathuḥ parākāddivaśca gmaśca martyam ||

Uśanas inquires of youu two as you pass, "(Why) have you come to (our dwelling) from a distance;from heaven and earth to a mortal?"

आ न इन्द्र पृक्षसेऽस्माकं ब्रह्मोद्यतम् । तत्त्वा याचामहेऽवः शुष्णं यद्धन्नमानुषम् ॥

ā na indra pṛkṣase'smākaṃ brahmodyatam | tattvā yācāmahe'vaḥ śuṣṇaṃ yaddhannamānuṣam ||

Accept, Indra, the oblation upraised by us; we solicit of you that protection by which you did slay thenon-human Suṣṇa.

अकर्मा दस्युरभि नो अमन्तुरन्यव्रतो अमानुषः । त्वं तस्यामित्रहन्वधर्दासस्य दम्भय ॥

akarmā dasyurabhi no amanturanyavrato amānuṣaḥ | tvaṃ tasyāmitrahanvadhardāsasya dambhaya ||

The Dasyu practising no religious rites, not knowing as thoroughly, following other observances,obeying no human laws, baffle, destroyer of enemies, the weapon of that slave.

त्वं न इन्द्र शूर शूरैरुत त्वोतासो बर्हणा । पुरुत्रा ते वि पूर्तयो नवन्त क्षोणयो यथा ॥

tvaṃ na indra śūra śūrairuta tvotāso barhaṇā | purutrā te vi pūrtayo navanta kṣoṇayo yathā ||

Hero, Indra, withh the hero (Maruts defend) us; that protected by you (we may be able) to overcome(our enemies); your blessings are diffused among many (praisers), as men (repair to their lord).

त्वं तान्वृत्रहत्ये चोदयो नॄन्कार्पाणे शूर वज्रिवः । गुहा यदी कवीनां विशां नक्षत्रशवसाम् ॥

tvaṃ tānvṛtrahatye codayo nṝnkārpāṇe śūra vajrivaḥ | guhā yadī kavīnāṃ viśāṃ nakṣatraśavasām ||

Hero, Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, you have animated those chiefs (the Maruts) to the slaughterof Vṛtra in battle, when (you hear) the mystical (praises) of the sages, the worshippers praising the might of theconstellations.

मक्षू ता त इन्द्र दानाप्नस आक्षाणे शूर वज्रिवः । यद्ध शुष्णस्य दम्भयो जातं विश्वं सयावभिः ॥

makṣū tā ta indra dānāpnasa ākṣāṇe śūra vajrivaḥ | yaddha śuṣṇasya dambhayo jātaṃ viśvaṃ sayāvabhiḥ ||

Hero, Indra, (your worshippers glorify) those prompt exploits performed by you in battle, (by you whoare) ever bountiful, when with your associate (Maruts) you destroyed the whole race o Śuṣṇa.

माकुध्र्यगिन्द्र शूर वस्वीरस्मे भूवन्नभिष्टयः । वयंवयं त आसां सुम्ने स्याम वज्रिवः ॥

mākudhryagindra śūra vasvīrasme bhūvannabhiṣṭayaḥ | vayaṃvayaṃ ta āsāṃ sumne syāma vajrivaḥ ||

Hero, Indra, let not our manifold sacrifices be unavailing, but may we all, thunderer, (through) your(favour) continue in the fruiton of these (our desires).

अस्मे ता त इन्द्र सन्तु सत्याहिंसन्तीरुपस्पृशः । विद्याम यासां भुजो धेनूनां न वज्रिवः ॥

asme tā ta indra santu satyāhiṃsantīrupaspṛśaḥ | vidyāma yāsāṃ bhujo dhenūnāṃ na vajrivaḥ ||

May these our (praises) reaching you, Indra, be successful, doing no detriment (to you), so that,thunderer, we may obtain the benefits derivable from them, as (a cowherd enjoys those) from the kine.

अहस्ता यदपदी वर्धत क्षाः शचीभिर्वेद्यानाम् । शुष्णं परि प्रदक्षिणिद्विश्वायवे नि शिश्नथः ॥

ahastā yadapadī vardhata kṣāḥ śacībhirvedyānām | śuṣṇaṃ pari pradakṣiṇidviśvāyave ni śiśnathaḥ ||

When the earth which has neither hands nor feet flourished throught the acts of (devotion paid to) theadorable (deities), then you did smite down Śuṣṇa, circumambulating it on the right, for the sake of Viśvāyu.

पिबापिबेदिन्द्र शूर सोमं मा रिषण्यो वसवान वसुः सन् । उत त्रायस्व गृणतो मघोनो महश्च रायो रेवतस्कृधी नः ॥

pibāpibedindra śūra somaṃ mā riṣaṇyo vasavāna vasuḥ san | uta trāyasva gṛṇato maghono mahaśca rāyo revataskṛdhī naḥ ||

Drink, hero Indra, drink the Soma; being excellent, harm (us) not, possessor of opulence; preservethose who praise you, and are affluent (in offerings), and render us rich with great riches.
