प्र ते रथं मिथूकृतमिन्द्रोऽवतु धृष्णुया । अस्मिन्नाजौ पुरुहूत श्रवाय्ये धनभक्षेषु नोऽव ॥

pra te rathaṃ mithūkṛtamindro'vatu dhṛṣṇuyā | asminnājau puruhūta śravāyye dhanabhakṣeṣu no'va ||

May (Indra) by his prowess protect your cart (mudgala) that has no companion, defend us, O invokedof many, in this memorable conflict in the recovery of our wealth.

उत्स्म वातो वहति वासोऽस्या अधिरथं यदजयत्सहस्रम् । रथीरभून्मुद्गलानी गविष्टौ भरे कृतं व्यचेदिन्द्रसेना ॥

utsma vāto vahati vāso'syā adhirathaṃ yadajayatsahasram | rathīrabhūnmudgalānī gaviṣṭau bhare kṛtaṃ vyacedindrasenā ||

The wind raised her vesture when she won a thousand cart-loads. Mudgalānī was the charioteer inthe quest of the cattle, the army of Indra recovered (the spoil) taken in battle.

अन्तर्यच्छ जिघांसतो वज्रमिन्द्राभिदासतः । दासस्य वा मघवन्नार्यस्य वा सनुतर्यवया वधम् ॥

antaryaccha jighāṃsato vajramindrābhidāsataḥ | dāsasya vā maghavannāryasya vā sanutaryavayā vadham ||

Restrain, Indra, the thunderbolt of the malignant threatening (foe); ward off, Maghavan, the secretweapon (of our foe), be he Dāsa or Ārya.

उद्नो ह्रदमपिबज्जर्हृषाणः कूटं स्म तृंहदभिमातिमेति । प्र मुष्कभारः श्रव इच्छमानोऽजिरं बाहू अभरत्सिषासन् ॥

udno hradamapibajjarhṛṣāṇaḥ kūṭaṃ sma tṛṃhadabhimātimeti | pra muṣkabhāraḥ śrava icchamāno'jiraṃ bāhū abharatsiṣāsan ||

Rejoicing, he drank up the pool of water, he cleft the mountain peak, he went against the enemy;endowed with vigour, eager for fame, assailing the quick-moving (foe), he seized him with his two arms.

न्यक्रन्दयन्नुपयन्त एनममेहयन्वृषभं मध्य आजेः । तेन सूभर्वं शतवत्सहस्रं गवां मुद्गलः प्रधने जिगाय ॥

nyakrandayannupayanta enamamehayanvṛṣabhaṃ madhya ājeḥ | tena sūbharvaṃ śatavatsahasraṃ gavāṃ mudgalaḥ pradhane jigāya ||

Approaching the bull, they made him roar in the midst of the battle. I, Mudgala, have thereby gained inwar hundreds and thousands of cattle well- pastured.

ककर्दवे वृषभो युक्त आसीदवावचीत्सारथिरस्य केशी । दुधेर्युक्तस्य द्रवतः सहानस ऋच्छन्ति ष्मा निष्पदो मुद्गलानीम् ॥

kakardave vṛṣabho yukta āsīdavāvacītsārathirasya keśī | dudheryuktasya dravataḥ sahānasa ṛcchanti ṣmā niṣpado mudgalānīm ||

The bull has been yoked for the destruction of the enemy; his long- haired yoke-fellow made him roar;

उत प्रधिमुदहन्नस्य विद्वानुपायुनग्वंसगमत्र शिक्षन् । इन्द्र उदावत्पतिमघ्न्यानामरंहत पद्याभिः ककुद्मान् ॥

uta pradhimudahannasya vidvānupāyunagvaṃsagamatra śikṣan | indra udāvatpatimaghnyānāmaraṃhata padyābhiḥ kakudmān ||

The sage (Mudgala) has fitted up the frame of the cart, he has harnessed the bull, training him to hiswork; Indra protected the lord of the inviolable (cows), the buffalo rushed along with speed.

शुनमष्ट्राव्यचरत्कपर्दी वरत्रायां दार्वानह्यमानः । नृम्णानि कृण्वन्बहवे जनाय गाः पस्पशानस्तविषीरधत्त ॥

śunamaṣṭrāvyacaratkapardī varatrāyāṃ dārvānahyamānaḥ | nṛmṇāni kṛṇvanbahave janāya gāḥ paspaśānastaviṣīradhatta ||

Wielding the goad (Indra) with the braided hair proceeded happily, fastening the strap to the wood (ofwon hundreds and thousands of cattle in war.

इमं तं पश्य वृषभस्य युञ्जं काष्ठाया मध्ये द्रुघणं शयानम् । येन जिगाय शतवत्सहस्रं गवां मुद्गलः पृतनाज्येषु ॥

imaṃ taṃ paśya vṛṣabhasya yuñjaṃ kāṣṭhāyā madhye drughaṇaṃ śayānam | yena jigāya śatavatsahasraṃ gavāṃ mudgalaḥ pṛtanājyeṣu ||

Details:

आरे अघा को न्वित्था ददर्श यं युञ्जन्ति तम्वा स्थापयन्ति । नास्मै तृणं नोदकमा भरन्त्युत्तरो धुरो वहति प्रदेदिशत् ॥

āre aghā ko nvitthā dadarśa yaṃ yuñjanti tamvā sthāpayanti | nāsmai tṛṇaṃ nodakamā bharantyuttaro dhuro vahati pradediśat ||

Who has thus beheld the evils near at hand? The (bull) which they yoke, they stop; to him they bringneither fodder nor water. Being above (the bull) he bears the chariot-pole announcing (victory to his lord).

परिवृक्तेव पतिविद्यमानट् पीप्याना कूचक्रेणेव सिञ्चन् । एषैष्या चिद्रथ्या जयेम सुमङ्गलं सिनवदस्तु सातम् ॥

parivṛkteva patividyamānaṭ pīpyānā kūcakreṇeva siñcan | eṣaiṣyā cidrathyā jayema sumaṅgalaṃ sinavadastu sātam ||

As a wife who has been abandoned rejoices to find her husband, as a cloud expanding when pouringforth rain with the aid of the earth's disc; with her eager (to recover the cattle) for our charioteer, may we win (theprize), may good fortune, together with food, be given to us.

त्वं विश्वस्य जगतश्चक्षुरिन्द्रासि चक्षुषः । वृषा यदाजिं वृषणा सिषाससि चोदयन्वध्रिणा युजा ॥

tvaṃ viśvasya jagataścakṣurindrāsi cakṣuṣaḥ | vṛṣā yadājiṃ vṛṣaṇā siṣāsasi codayanvadhriṇā yujā ||

You, Indra, are the eye of the whole world, when, showerer (of benefits), urging on your two vigoroussteeds, harnessed to the car, you engage in battle.
