[rv-1-84] • 20 श्लोकाः

असावि सोम इन्द्र ते शविष्ठ धृष्णवा गहि । आ त्वा पृणक्त्विन्द्रियं रजः सूर्यो न रश्मिभिः ॥

asāvi soma indra te śaviṣṭha dhṛṣṇavā gahi | ā tvā pṛṇaktvindriyaṃ rajaḥ sūryo na raśmibhiḥ ||

The Soma has been expressed, Indra, for you; potent humber (of your foes), approach; may vigour fill you (by Soma), as the sun fills the firmament with his rays.

इन्द्रमिद्धरी वहतोऽप्रतिधृष्टशवसम् । ऋषीणां च स्तुतीरुप यज्ञं च मानुषाणाम् ॥

indramiddharī vahato'pratidhṛṣṭaśavasam | ṛṣīṇāṃ ca stutīrupa yajñaṃ ca mānuṣāṇām ||

May his horses bear Indra, who is of irresistible prowess, to the praises and sacrifices of sages and of men.

आ तिष्ठ वृत्रहन्रथं युक्ता ते ब्रह्मणा हरी । अर्वाचीनं सु ते मनो ग्रावा कृणोतु वग्नुना ॥

ā tiṣṭha vṛtrahanrathaṃ yuktā te brahmaṇā harī | arvācīnaṃ su te mano grāvā kṛṇotu vagnunā ||

Slayer of Vṛtra, ascend your chariot, for your horses have been yoked by prayer; may the stone (that bruises the Soma) attract, by its sound, your mind towards us.

इममिन्द्र सुतं पिब ज्येष्ठममर्त्यं मदम् । शुक्रस्य त्वाभ्यक्षरन्धारा ऋतस्य सादने ॥

imamindra sutaṃ piba jyeṣṭhamamartyaṃ madam | śukrasya tvābhyakṣarandhārā ṛtasya sādane ||

Drink, Indra, this excellent, immortal exhilarating libation, the dropf of which pellucid (beverage) flow towards you in the chamber of sacrifice.

इन्द्राय नूनमर्चतोक्थानि च ब्रवीतन । सुता अमत्सुरिन्दवो ज्येष्ठं नमस्यता सहः ॥

indrāya nūnamarcatokthāni ca bravītana | sutā amatsurindavo jyeṣṭhaṃ namasyatā sahaḥ ||

Offer worship quickly to Indra; recite hymns (in his praise); let the effused drops exhilarate him; pay adoration to his superior strength.

नकिष्ट्वद्रथीतरो हरी यदिन्द्र यच्छसे । नकिष्ट्वानु मज्मना नकिः स्वश्व आनशे ॥

nakiṣṭvadrathītaro harī yadindra yacchase | nakiṣṭvānu majmanā nakiḥ svaśva ānaśe ||

When, Indra, you harness your horses, there is no one a better charioteer than you; no one is equal to you in strength; no one, although well-horsed, has overtaken you.

य एक इद्विदयते वसु मर्ताय दाशुषे । ईशानो अप्रतिष्कुत इन्द्रो अङ्ग ॥

ya eka idvidayate vasu martāya dāśuṣe | īśāno apratiṣkuta indro aṅga ||

He who alone bestows wealth upon the man who offers him oblations, is the undisputed sovereign, Indra--ho!

कदा मर्तमराधसं पदा क्षुम्पमिव स्फुरत् । कदा नः शुश्रवद्गिर इन्द्रो अङ्ग ॥

kadā martamarādhasaṃ padā kṣumpamiva sphurat | kadā naḥ śuśravadgira indro aṅga ||

When all he trample with his foot upon the man who offers no oblations, as if upon a coiled-up snake; when will Indra listen to our praises? ho!

यश्चिद्धि त्वा बहुभ्य आ सुतावाँ आविवासति । उग्रं तत्पत्यते शव इन्द्रो अङ्ग ॥

yaściddhi tvā bahubhya ā sutāvā~ āvivāsati | ugraṃ tatpatyate śava indro aṅga ||

Indra, grant formidable strength to him who worships him, having libations prepared--ho!

स्वादोरित्था विषूवतो मध्वः पिबन्ति गौर्यः । या इन्द्रेण सयावरीर्वृष्णा मदन्ति शोभसे वस्वीरनु स्वराज्यम् ॥

svādoritthā viṣūvato madhvaḥ pibanti gauryaḥ | yā indreṇa sayāvarīrvṛṣṇā madanti śobhase vasvīranu svarājyam ||

The white cows drink of the sweet Soma thus poured forth, and associated with the bountiful Indra, for the sake of beauty, rejoice; abiding (in their stalls), they are expectant of his sovereignty.

ता अस्य पृशनायुवः सोमं श्रीणन्ति पृश्नयः । प्रिया इन्द्रस्य धेनवो वज्रं हिन्वन्ति सायकं वस्वीरनु स्वराज्यम् ॥

tā asya pṛśanāyuvaḥ somaṃ śrīṇanti pṛśnayaḥ | priyā indrasya dhenavo vajraṃ hinvanti sāyakaṃ vasvīranu svarājyam ||

Desirous of his contact, those bridled cows dilute the Soma with their milk; the kine that are loved of Indra direct his destructive thunderbolt against his foes, abiding (in their stalls) expectant of his sovereignty.

ता अस्य नमसा सहः सपर्यन्ति प्रचेतसः । व्रतान्यस्य सश्चिरे पुरूणि पूर्वचित्तये वस्वीरनु स्वराज्यम् ॥

tā asya namasā sahaḥ saparyanti pracetasaḥ | vratānyasya saścire purūṇi pūrvacittaye vasvīranu svarājyam ||

These intelligent kine reverence his prowess with the adoration (of their milk); they celebrate his manly exploits as an example to later (adversaries); abiding (in their stalls), expectant of his sovereignty.

इन्द्रो दधीचो अस्थभिर्वृत्राण्यप्रतिष्कुतः । जघान नवतीर्नव ॥

indro dadhīco asthabhirvṛtrāṇyapratiṣkutaḥ | jaghāna navatīrnava ||

Indra, with the bones of Dadhīci, slew ninety times nine Vṛtras.

इच्छन्नश्वस्य यच्छिरः पर्वतेष्वपश्रितम् । तद्विदच्छर्यणावति ॥

icchannaśvasya yacchiraḥ parvateṣvapaśritam | tadvidaccharyaṇāvati ||

Wishing for the horse's head hidden in the mountains, he found is Śaryaṇāvat.

अत्राह गोरमन्वत नाम त्वष्टुरपीच्यम् । इत्था चन्द्रमसो गृहे ॥

atrāha goramanvata nāma tvaṣṭurapīcyam | itthā candramaso gṛhe ||

The (solar rays) found on this occasion the light of Tvaṣṭā verily concealed in the mansion of the moving moon.

को अद्य युङ्क्ते धुरि गा ऋतस्य शिमीवतो भामिनो दुर्हृणायून् । आसन्निषून्हृत्स्वसो मयोभून्य एषां भृत्यामृणधत्स जीवात् ॥

ko adya yuṅkte dhuri gā ṛtasya śimīvato bhāmino durhṛṇāyūn | āsanniṣūnhṛtsvaso mayobhūnya eṣāṃ bhṛtyāmṛṇadhatsa jīvāt ||

Who yokes todya to the pole of the car (of Indra) his vigorous and radiant steeds, whose fury is unbearable, in whose mouths are arrows, who trample on the hearts (of enemies), who give happiness (to friends). (The sacrificer) who praises their (performance of their) duties obtains (long) life.

क ईषते तुज्यते को बिभाय को मंसते सन्तमिन्द्रं को अन्ति । कस्तोकाय क इभायोत रायेऽधि ब्रवत्तन्वे को जनाय ॥

ka īṣate tujyate ko bibhāya ko maṃsate santamindraṃ ko anti | kastokāya ka ibhāyota rāye'dhi bravattanve ko janāya ||

Who goes forth, (through dread of foes, when Indra is at hand); who is harmed (by his enemies); who is terrified; who is aware that Indra is present, who that he is night? What need is there that any one should importune Indra for his son, his elephant, his property, his person n, or his people?

को अग्निमीट्टे हविषा घृतेन स्रुचा यजाता ऋतुभिर्ध्रुवेभिः । कस्मै देवा आ वहानाशु होम को मंसते वीतिहोत्रः सुदेवः ॥

ko agnimīṭṭe haviṣā ghṛtena srucā yajātā ṛtubhirdhruvebhiḥ | kasmai devā ā vahānāśu homa ko maṃsate vītihotraḥ sudevaḥ ||

Who praises the (sacrificial) fire, (lighted for Indra), or worships him with the oblation of clarified butter, presented in the ladle, according to the constant seasons? To whom do the gods quickly bring (the wealth) that has been called for? What sacrificer, engaged in offering oblations and favoured by the gods, thoroughly knows Indra?

त्वमङ्ग प्र शंसिषो देवः शविष्ठ मर्त्यम् । न त्वदन्यो मघवन्नस्ति मर्डितेन्द्र ब्रवीमि ते वचः ॥

tvamaṅga pra śaṃsiṣo devaḥ śaviṣṭha martyam | na tvadanyo maghavannasti marḍitendra bravīmi te vacaḥ ||

Powerful, Indra, be present and be favourable to the mortal (who adores you); there is no other giver of felicity, Maghavan, than you; hence, Indra, I recite your praise.

मा ते राधांसि मा त ऊतयो वसोऽस्मान्कदा चना दभन् । विश्वा च न उपमिमीहि मानुष वसूनि चर्षणिभ्य आ ॥

mā te rādhāṃsi mā ta ūtayo vaso'smānkadā canā dabhan | viśvā ca na upamimīhi mānuṣa vasūni carṣaṇibhya ā ||

Granter of dwellings, let not your treasury, let not your benefits, ever be detrimental to us. Friend of mankind, bring to us, who are acquainted with prayers, all sorts of riches.
