[rv-1-54] • 11 श्लोकाः

मा नो अस्मिन्मघवन्पृत्स्वंहसि नहि ते अन्तः शवसः परीणशे । अक्रन्दयो नद्यो रोरुवद्वना कथा न क्षोणीर्भियसा समारत ॥

mā no asminmaghavanpṛtsvaṃhasi nahi te antaḥ śavasaḥ parīṇaśe | akrandayo nadyo roruvadvanā kathā na kṣoṇīrbhiyasā samārata ||

Urge us not, Maghavan, to this iniquity, to these iniquitous conflicts, for the limit of your strength is not to be surpassed; you have made the waters of the rivers roar; how (is it possible) that the earth should be filled with terror?

अर्चा शक्राय शाकिने शचीवते शृण्वन्तमिन्द्रं महयन्नभि ष्टुहि । यो धृष्णुना शवसा रोदसी उभे वृषा वृषत्वा वृषभो न्यृञ्जते ॥

arcā śakrāya śākine śacīvate śṛṇvantamindraṃ mahayannabhi ṣṭuhi | yo dhṛṣṇunā śavasā rodasī ubhe vṛṣā vṛṣatvā vṛṣabho nyṛñjate ||

Offer adoration to the wise and powerful Śakra; glorifying the listening Indra, praise him who purifies both heaven and earth by his irresistible might, who is the sender of showers, and by his bounty gratifies our desires.

अर्चा दिवे बृहते शूष्यं वचः स्वक्षत्रं यस्य धृषतो धृषन्मनः । बृहच्छ्रवा असुरो बर्हणा कृतः पुरो हरिभ्यां वृषभो रथो हि षः ॥

arcā dive bṛhate śūṣyaṃ vacaḥ svakṣatraṃ yasya dhṛṣato dhṛṣanmanaḥ | bṛhacchravā asuro barhaṇā kṛtaḥ puro haribhyāṃ vṛṣabho ratho hi ṣaḥ ||

Offer exhilarating praises to the great and illustrious Indra, of whom, undaunted, the steady mind is concentrated in its own firmness; for he, who is of great renown, the giver of rain, the repeller of enemies, who is obeyed his steeds, the showerer (of bounties), is hastening hither.

त्वं दिवो बृहतः सानु कोपयोऽव त्मना धृषता शम्बरं भिनत् । यन्मायिनो व्रन्दिनो मन्दिना धृषच्छितां गभस्तिमशनिं पृतन्यसि ॥

tvaṃ divo bṛhataḥ sānu kopayo'va tmanā dhṛṣatā śambaraṃ bhinat | yanmāyino vrandino mandinā dhṛṣacchitāṃ gabhastimaśaniṃ pṛtanyasi ||

You have shaken the summit of the spacious heaven; you have slain Śambara by your resolute self; you have hurled with exulting and determined mind the sharp and bright-rayed thunderbolt against assembled Asuras.

नि यद्वृणक्षि श्वसनस्य मूर्धनि शुष्णस्य चिद्व्रन्दिनो रोरुवद्वना । प्राचीनेन मनसा बर्हणावता यदद्या चित्कृणवः कस्त्वा परि ॥

ni yadvṛṇakṣi śvasanasya mūrdhani śuṣṇasya cidvrandino roruvadvanā | prācīnena manasā barhaṇāvatā yadadyā citkṛṇavaḥ kastvā pari ||

Since you, loud-shouting, have poured the rain upon the brow of the breathing (wind), and (on the head) of the maturing and absorbing (sun), who shall prevent you from doing today (as you will), endowed with an unaltered and resolute mind?

त्वमाविथ नर्यं तुर्वशं यदुं त्वं तुर्वीतिं वय्यं शतक्रतो । त्वं रथमेतशं कृत्व्ये धने त्वं पुरो नवतिं दम्भयो नव ॥

tvamāvitha naryaṃ turvaśaṃ yaduṃ tvaṃ turvītiṃ vayyaṃ śatakrato | tvaṃ rathametaśaṃ kṛtvye dhane tvaṃ puro navatiṃ dambhayo nava ||

You have protected Narya, Turvaśa, Yadu and Turvīti, of the face of Vayya; you have protected their chariots and horses in the unavoidable engagement; you have demolished ninety-nine cities (of Śambara).

स घा राजा सत्पतिः शूशुवज्जनो रातहव्यः प्रति यः शासमिन्वति । उक्था वा यो अभिगृणाति राधसा दानुरस्मा उपरा पिन्वते दिवः ॥

sa ghā rājā satpatiḥ śūśuvajjano rātahavyaḥ prati yaḥ śāsaminvati | ukthā vā yo abhigṛṇāti rādhasā dānurasmā uparā pinvate divaḥ ||

That eminent person n, the cherisher of the pious, (he instrumental tutor of the ceremony), promotes his own prosperity, who, while offering oblations to Indra, pronounces his praise; or who, along with the offerings he presents, recites hymns (in honour of him); for him the bounteous Indra causes the clouds to rain from heaven.

असमं क्षत्रमसमा मनीषा प्र सोमपा अपसा सन्तु नेमे । ये त इन्द्र ददुषो वर्धयन्ति महि क्षत्रं स्थविरं वृष्ण्यं च ॥

asamaṃ kṣatramasamā manīṣā pra somapā apasā santu neme | ye ta indra daduṣo vardhayanti mahi kṣatraṃ sthaviraṃ vṛṣṇyaṃ ca ||

Unequalled is his might; unequalled is his wisdom; may these drinkers of the Soma become equal to him the pious act, for they, Indra, who present to you oblations, augment your vast strength and your manly vigour.

तुभ्येदेते बहुला अद्रिदुग्धाश्चमूषदश्चमसा इन्द्रपानाः । व्यश्नुहि तर्पया काममेषामथा मनो वसुदेयाय कृष्व ॥

tubhyedete bahulā adridugdhāścamūṣadaścamasā indrapānāḥ | vyaśnuhi tarpayā kāmameṣāmathā mano vasudeyāya kṛṣva ||

These copious Soma juices, expressed with stones and contained in ladles, are prepared for you; they are the beverage of Indra; quaff them; satiate your appetite with them; and then fix your mind on the wealth that is to be given (to us).

अपामतिष्ठद्धरुणह्वरं तमोऽन्तर्वृत्रस्य जठरेषु पर्वतः । अभीमिन्द्रो नद्यो वव्रिणा हिता विश्वा अनुष्ठाः प्रवणेषु जिघ्नते ॥

apāmatiṣṭhaddharuṇahvaraṃ tamo'ntarvṛtrasya jaṭhareṣu parvataḥ | abhīmindro nadyo vavriṇā hitā viśvā anuṣṭhāḥ pravaṇeṣu jighnate ||

The darkness obstructed the current of the waters; the cloud was within the belly of Vṛtra; but Indra precipitated all the waters which the obstructor had concealed, in succession, down to the hollows (of the earth).

स शेवृधमधि धा द्युम्नमस्मे महि क्षत्रं जनाषाऴिन्द्र तव्यम् । रक्षा च नो मघोनः पाहि सूरीन्राये च नः स्वपत्या इषे धाः ॥

sa śevṛdhamadhi dhā dyumnamasme mahi kṣatraṃ janāṣāḻindra tavyam | rakṣā ca no maghonaḥ pāhi sūrīnrāye ca naḥ svapatyā iṣe dhāḥ ||

Bestow upon us, Indra, increasing reputation; (bestow upon us) great, augmenting, and foe subduing strength; preserve us in affluence; cherish those who are wise; and supply us with wealth from which proceed excellent progeny and food.
