[rv-1-55] • 8 श्लोकाः

दिवश्चिदस्य वरिमा वि पप्रथ इन्द्रं न मह्ना पृथिवी चन प्रति । भीमस्तुविष्माञ्चर्षणिभ्य आतपः शिशीते वज्रं तेजसे न वंसगः ॥

divaścidasya varimā vi papratha indraṃ na mahnā pṛthivī cana prati | bhīmastuviṣmāñcarṣaṇibhya ātapaḥ śiśīte vajraṃ tejase na vaṃsagaḥ ||

The amplitude of Indra was vaster than the (space of) heaven; earth was not comparable to him in bulk; formidable and most mighty, he has been ever the afflicter (of the enemies of) those men (who worship him); he has his thunderbolt for sharpness, as a bull (his horns).

सो अर्णवो न नद्यः समुद्रियः प्रति गृभ्णाति विश्रिता वरीमभिः । इन्द्रः सोमस्य पीतये वृषायते सनात्स युध्म ओजसा पनस्यते ॥

so arṇavo na nadyaḥ samudriyaḥ prati gṛbhṇāti viśritā varīmabhiḥ | indraḥ somasya pītaye vṛṣāyate sanātsa yudhma ojasā panasyate ||

The firmament-abiding Indra graps the wide-spread waters with his comprehenisve faculties, as the ocean (receives the rivers); he rushes (impetuous) as a bull, to drik of the Soma; he, the warrior, even covets praise for his prowess.

त्वं तमिन्द्र पर्वतं न भोजसे महो नृम्णस्य धर्मणामिरज्यसि । प्र वीर्येण देवताति चेकिते विश्वस्मा उग्रः कर्मणे पुरोहितः ॥

tvaṃ tamindra parvataṃ na bhojase maho nṛmṇasya dharmaṇāmirajyasi | pra vīryeṇa devatāti cekite viśvasmā ugraḥ karmaṇe purohitaḥ ||

You Indra, have not (struck) the cloud for (your own) enjoyment; you rulest over those who are possessed of great wealth; that divinity is known by us to surpass all others in strength; the haughty (Indra) takes precedence of all gods, on account of his exploits.

स इद्वने नमस्युभिर्वचस्यते चारु जनेषु प्रब्रुवाण इन्द्रियम् । वृषा छन्दुर्भवति हर्यतो वृषा क्षेमेण धेनां मघवा यदिन्वति ॥

sa idvane namasyubhirvacasyate cāru janeṣu prabruvāṇa indriyam | vṛṣā chandurbhavati haryato vṛṣā kṣemeṇa dhenāṃ maghavā yadinvati ||

He verily is glorified by adoring (sages) in the forest; he proclaims his beautiful vigour amongst men ; he is the granter of their wishes (to those who solicit him); he is the encourager of those who desire to worship (him), when the wealthy offerer of oblations, enjoying his protection, recites his praise.

स इन्महानि समिथानि मज्मना कृणोति युध्म ओजसा जनेभ्यः । अधा चन श्रद्दधति त्विषीमत इन्द्राय वज्रं निघनिघ्नते वधम् ॥

sa inmahāni samithāni majmanā kṛṇoti yudhma ojasā janebhyaḥ | adhā cana śraddadhati tviṣīmata indrāya vajraṃ nighanighnate vadham ||

Indra the warrior, engages in many great conflicts for (the good of) man, with overwhelming prowess; when he hurls his fatal shaft, every one immediately has faith in the resplendent Indra.

स हि श्रवस्युः सदनानि कृत्रिमा क्ष्मया वृधान ओजसा विनाशयन् । ज्योतींषि कृण्वन्नवृकाणि यज्यवेऽव सुक्रतुः सर्तवा अपः सृजत् ॥

sa hi śravasyuḥ sadanāni kṛtrimā kṣmayā vṛdhāna ojasā vināśayan | jyotīṃṣi kṛṇvannavṛkāṇi yajyave'va sukratuḥ sartavā apaḥ sṛjat ||

Ambitious of renown, destroying the well-built dwellings of the asuras, expanding like the earth, and setting the (heavenly) luminaries free from concealment, he, the performer of good deeds, enables the waters to flow for the benefit of his worshippers.

दानाय मनः सोमपावन्नस्तु तेऽर्वाञ्चा हरी वन्दनश्रुदा कृधि । यमिष्ठासः सारथयो य इन्द्र ते न त्वा केता आ दभ्नुवन्ति भूर्णयः ॥

dānāya manaḥ somapāvannastu te'rvāñcā harī vandanaśrudā kṛdhi | yamiṣṭhāsaḥ sārathayo ya indra te na tvā ketā ā dabhnuvanti bhūrṇayaḥ ||

Drinker of Soma, may your mind incline to grant our desires; hearer of praises, let your coursers be present (at our sacrifice); your charioteers are skillful in restraining (your steeds); nor, Indra, can crafty (enemies) bearing arms prevail against you.

अप्रक्षितं वसु बिभर्षि हस्तयोरषाऴ्हं सहस्तन्वि श्रुतो दधे । आवृतासोऽवतासो न कर्तृभिस्तनूषु ते क्रतव इन्द्र भूरयः ॥

aprakṣitaṃ vasu bibharṣi hastayoraṣāḻhaṃ sahastanvi śruto dadhe | āvṛtāso'vatāso na kartṛbhistanūṣu te kratava indra bhūrayaḥ ||

You hold in your hands unexhausted wealth; you, renowned (Indra), have irresistible strength in your body; your limbs are invested with (glorious) exploits, as well as (are surrounded by those who come for water); in your member, Indra, are many exploits.
