[rv-1-52] • 15 श्लोकाः

त्यं सु मेषं महया स्वर्विदं शतं यस्य सुभ्वः साकमीरते । अत्यं न वाजं हवनस्यदं रथमेन्द्रं ववृत्यामवसे सुवृक्तिभिः ॥

tyaṃ su meṣaṃ mahayā svarvidaṃ śataṃ yasya subhvaḥ sākamīrate | atyaṃ na vājaṃ havanasyadaṃ rathamendraṃ vavṛtyāmavase suvṛktibhiḥ ||

Worship well that ram who makes heaven known, whom a hundred worshippers at once are assiduous in praising. I implore Indra with many prayers to ascend the car, which hastens like a fleet courser to the sacrificer for my protection.

स पर्वतो न धरुणेष्वच्युतः सहस्रमूतिस्तविषीषु वावृधे । इन्द्रो यद्वृत्रमवधीन्नदीवृतमुब्जन्नर्णांसि जर्हृषाणो अन्धसा ॥

sa parvato na dharuṇeṣvacyutaḥ sahasramūtistaviṣīṣu vāvṛdhe | indro yadvṛtramavadhīnnadīvṛtamubjannarṇāṃsi jarhṛṣāṇo andhasā ||

When Indra, who delights in the sacrificial food, had slain the stream-obstructing Vṛtra, and was pouring down the waters, he stood firm amid the torrents like a mountain, and endowed with a thousand means of protecting (his votaries) increased in vigour.

स हि द्वरो द्वरिषु वव्र ऊधनि चन्द्रबुध्नो मदवृद्धो मनीषिभिः । इन्द्रं तमह्वे स्वपस्यया धिया मंहिष्ठरातिं स हि पप्रिरन्धसः ॥

sa hi dvaro dvariṣu vavra ūdhani candrabudhno madavṛddho manīṣibhiḥ | indraṃ tamahve svapasyayā dhiyā maṃhiṣṭharātiṃ sa hi paprirandhasaḥ ||

He who is victorious over his enemies, who is spread through the dewy (firmament), the root of happiness, who is exhilarated by the Soma him I invoke, the most bountiful Indra, along with learned priests, with a mind disposed to pious adoration, for he is the bestower of abundant food.

आ यं पृणन्ति दिवि सद्मबर्हिषः समुद्रं न सुभ्वः स्वा अभिष्टयः । तं वृत्रहत्ये अनु तस्थुरूतयः शुष्मा इन्द्रमवाता अह्रुतप्सवः ॥

ā yaṃ pṛṇanti divi sadmabarhiṣaḥ samudraṃ na subhvaḥ svā abhiṣṭayaḥ | taṃ vṛtrahatye anu tasthurūtayaḥ śuṣmā indramavātā ahrutapsavaḥ ||

Tha Indra whom in heaven the libations sprinkled on the sacred grass replenish, as the kindred rivers hastening to it fill the ocean; that Indra whom the Maruts, the driers up of moisture, who are unobstructed, and of undistorted forms, attended as auxiliaries at the death of Vṛtra.

अभि स्ववृष्टिं मदे अस्य युध्यतो रघ्वीरिव प्रवणे सस्रुरूतयः । इन्द्रो यद्वज्री धृषमाणो अन्धसा भिनद्वलस्य परिधीँरिव त्रितः ॥

abhi svavṛṣṭiṃ made asya yudhyato raghvīriva pravaṇe sasrurūtayaḥ | indro yadvajrī dhṛṣamāṇo andhasā bhinadvalasya paridhī~riva tritaḥ ||

His allies, exhilarated (by libations), preceded him, warring against the withholder of the rain, as rivers rush down declivities. Indra, animated by the sacrificial food, broke through the defences of Vala as did Trita through the coverings (of the well).

परीं घृणा चरति तित्विषे शवोऽपो वृत्वी रजसो बुध्नमाशयत् । वृत्रस्य यत्प्रवणे दुर्गृभिश्वनो निजघन्थ हन्वोरिन्द्र तन्यतुम् ॥

parīṃ ghṛṇā carati titviṣe śavo'po vṛtvī rajaso budhnamāśayat | vṛtrasya yatpravaṇe durgṛbhiśvano nijaghantha hanvorindra tanyatum ||

When, Indra, you had smitten with my thunderbolt the check of the wide-extended Vṛtra, who, having obstructed the waters reposed in the region above the firmament, your fame spread afar, your prowess was renowned.

ह्रदं न हि त्वा न्यृषन्त्यूर्मयो ब्रह्माणीन्द्र तव यानि वर्धना । त्वष्टा चित्ते युज्यं वावृधे शवस्ततक्ष वज्रमभिभूत्योजसम् ॥

hradaṃ na hi tvā nyṛṣantyūrmayo brahmāṇīndra tava yāni vardhanā | tvaṣṭā citte yujyaṃ vāvṛdhe śavastatakṣa vajramabhibhūtyojasam ||

The hymns, Indra, that glorify you, attain unto you, as rivulets (flow into) a lake. Tvaṣṭā has augmented your appropriate vigour; he has sharpened your bolt with overpowering might.

जघन्वाँ उ हरिभिः सम्भृतक्रतविन्द्र वृत्रं मनुषे गातुयन्नपः । अयच्छथा बाह्वोर्वज्रमायसमधारयो दिव्या सूर्यं दृशे ॥

jaghanvā~ u haribhiḥ sambhṛtakratavindra vṛtraṃ manuṣe gātuyannapaḥ | ayacchathā bāhvorvajramāyasamadhārayo divyā sūryaṃ dṛśe ||

Indra, performer of holy acts, desirous of going to man, you with your steeds have slain Vṛtra (have set free) the waters, have taken in your hands your thunderbolt of metal, and have made the sun visible in the sky.

बृहत्स्वश्चन्द्रममवद्यदुक्थ्यमकृण्वत भियसा रोहणं दिवः । यन्मानुषप्रधना इन्द्रमूतयः स्वर्नृषाचो मरुतोऽमदन्ननु ॥

bṛhatsvaścandramamavadyadukthyamakṛṇvata bhiyasā rohaṇaṃ divaḥ | yanmānuṣapradhanā indramūtayaḥ svarnṛṣāco maruto'madannanu ||

Through fear (of Vṛtra, they, the worshippers), recited the suitable hymn of the Bṛhat (Sāma), self-illuminating, strength-bestowing, and ascending to heaven; on which his allies, (the Maruts), combating for men, (guardians) of heaven, and vivifiers of mankind animated Indra (to destroy him).

द्यौश्चिदस्यामवाँ अहेः स्वनादयोयवीद्भियसा वज्र इन्द्र ते । वृत्रस्य यद्बद्बधानस्य रोदसी मदे सुतस्य शवसाभिनच्छिरः ॥

dyauścidasyāmavā~ aheḥ svanādayoyavīdbhiyasā vajra indra te | vṛtrasya yadbadbadhānasya rodasī made sutasya śavasābhinacchiraḥ ||

The strong heaven was rent asunder with fear at the clamour of that Ahi, when you, Indra, was inspired by (drinking) the effused (Soma), and your thunderbolt in its vigour struck off the head of Vṛtra, the obstructor of heaven and earth.

यदिन्न्विन्द्र पृथिवी दशभुजिरहानि विश्वा ततनन्त कृष्टयः । अत्राह ते मघवन्विश्रुतं सहो द्यामनु शवसा बर्हणा भुवत् ॥

yadinnvindra pṛthivī daśabhujirahāni viśvā tatananta kṛṣṭayaḥ | atrāha te maghavanviśrutaṃ saho dyāmanu śavasā barhaṇā bhuvat ||

Although, Indra, the earth were of tenfold (its extent), and men multiplied every day, yet, Maghavan, your prowess would be equally renowned; the exploits achieved by your might would be spread abroad with the heavens.

त्वमस्य पारे रजसो व्योमनः स्वभूत्योजा अवसे धृषन्मनः । चकृषे भूमिं प्रतिमानमोजसोऽपः स्वः परिभूरेष्या दिवम् ॥

tvamasya pāre rajaso vyomanaḥ svabhūtyojā avase dhṛṣanmanaḥ | cakṛṣe bhūmiṃ pratimānamojaso'paḥ svaḥ paribhūreṣyā divam ||

Firm-minded Indra, abiding (secure) in your strength beyond the limit of the wide-expanded firmament, you have framed the earth for our preservation; you have been the type of vigour; you have encompassed the firmament and the sky as far as to the heavens.

त्वं भुवः प्रतिमानं पृथिव्या ऋष्ववीरस्य बृहतः पतिर्भूः । विश्वमाप्रा अन्तरिक्षं महित्वा सत्यमद्धा नकिरन्यस्त्वावान् ॥

tvaṃ bhuvaḥ pratimānaṃ pṛthivyā ṛṣvavīrasya bṛhataḥ patirbhūḥ | viśvamāprā antarikṣaṃ mahitvā satyamaddhā nakiranyastvāvān ||

You are the type of the extended earth you are the lord of the vast god-frequent (svarga) verily with your bulk you fillest all the firmament of a truth, there is none other such as you.

न यस्य द्यावापृथिवी अनु व्यचो न सिन्धवो रजसो अन्तमानशुः । नोत स्ववृष्टिं मदे अस्य युध्यत एको अन्यच्चकृषे विश्वमानुषक् ॥

na yasya dyāvāpṛthivī anu vyaco na sindhavo rajaso antamānaśuḥ | nota svavṛṣṭiṃ made asya yudhyata eko anyaccakṛṣe viśvamānuṣak ||

you, Indra, of whom heaven and earth have not attained the amplitude; of whom the waters of heaven have not reached the limit; of whom, when warring with excited animation against the withholder of the rains, (his adversaries have not equalled the prowess); you alone have made everything else, (than yourself), dependent (upon you).

आर्चन्नत्र मरुतः सस्मिन्नाजौ विश्वे देवासो अमदन्ननु त्वा । वृत्रस्य यद्भृष्टिमता वधेन नि त्वमिन्द्र प्रत्यानं जघन्थ ॥

ārcannatra marutaḥ sasminnājau viśve devāso amadannanu tvā | vṛtrasya yadbhṛṣṭimatā vadhena ni tvamindra pratyānaṃ jaghantha ||

The Maruts worshipped you in this (encounter); all the gods in this engagement imitated you in exultation, when you had struck the face of Vṛtra with your angular and fatal (bolt).
