[rv-1-51] • 15 श्लोकाः

अभि त्यं मेषं पुरुहूतमृग्मियमिन्द्रं गीर्भिर्मदता वस्वो अर्णवम् । यस्य द्यावो न विचरन्ति मानुषा भुजे मंहिष्ठमभि विप्रमर्चत ॥

abhi tyaṃ meṣaṃ puruhūtamṛgmiyamindraṃ gīrbhirmadatā vasvo arṇavam | yasya dyāvo na vicaranti mānuṣā bhuje maṃhiṣṭhamabhi vipramarcata ||

Anime with praises that ram, (Indra), who is adored by many, who is gratified by hymns, and is an ocean of wealth; whose good deeds spread abroad for the benefit of mankind, like the rays of light; worship the powerful and wise Indra, for the enjoyment of prosperity.

अभीमवन्वन्त्स्वभिष्टिमूतयोऽन्तरिक्षप्रां तविषीभिरावृतम् । इन्द्रं दक्षास ऋभवो मदच्युतं शतक्रतुं जवनी सूनृतारुहत् ॥

abhīmavanvantsvabhiṣṭimūtayo'ntarikṣaprāṃ taviṣībhirāvṛtam | indraṃ dakṣāsa ṛbhavo madacyutaṃ śatakratuṃ javanī sūnṛtāruhat ||

The protecting and fostering Ṛbhus hastened to the presence of Indra, of graceful motion, and irradiating the firmament, imbued with vigour, the humiliator of his enemies, the performer of a hundred pious acts; and by them, encouraging words were uttered.

त्वं गोत्रमङ्गिरोभ्योऽवृणोरपोतात्रये शतदुरेषु गातुवित् । ससेन चिद्विमदायावहो वस्वाजावद्रिं वावसानस्य नर्तयन् ॥

tvaṃ gotramaṅgirobhyo'vṛṇorapotātraye śatadureṣu gātuvit | sasena cidvimadāyāvaho vasvājāvadriṃ vāvasānasya nartayan ||

You have opened the cloud for the Aṅgirasas you have shown the way to Atri, who vexes his adversaries by a hundred doors (by a number of yantras, means or contrivances); you have granted wealth, with food, to Vimada; you are wielding your thunderbolt in defence of a worshipper engaged in battle.

त्वमपामपिधानावृणोरपाधारयः पर्वते दानुमद्वसु । वृत्रं यदिन्द्र शवसावधीरहिमादित्सूर्यं दिव्यारोहयो दृशे ॥

tvamapāmapidhānāvṛṇorapādhārayaḥ parvate dānumadvasu | vṛtraṃ yadindra śavasāvadhīrahimāditsūryaṃ divyārohayo dṛśe ||

You have opened the receptacle of the waters; you have detained in the mountain the treasure of the malignant; when you had slain Vṛtra, the destryer, you made the sun visible in the sky.

त्वं मायाभिरप मायिनोऽधमः स्वधाभिर्ये अधि शुप्तावजुह्वत । त्वं पिप्रोर्नृमणः प्रारुजः पुरः प्र ऋजिश्वानं दस्युहत्येष्वाविथ ॥

tvaṃ māyābhirapa māyino'dhamaḥ svadhābhirye adhi śuptāvajuhvata | tvaṃ piprornṛmaṇaḥ prārujaḥ puraḥ pra ṛjiśvānaṃ dasyuhatyeṣvāvitha ||

You, Indra, by the devices, have humbled the deceivers who presented oblations to their own mouths; propitious to men, you have destroyed the cities of Pipru, and have well defended Ṛjiśvan in robber-destroying (contest).

त्वं कुत्सं शुष्णहत्येष्वाविथारन्धयोऽतिथिग्वाय शम्बरम् । महान्तं चिदर्बुदं नि क्रमीः पदा सनादेव दस्युहत्याय जज्ञिषे ॥

tvaṃ kutsaṃ śuṣṇahatyeṣvāvithārandhayo'tithigvāya śambaram | mahāntaṃ cidarbudaṃ ni kramīḥ padā sanādeva dasyuhatyāya jajñiṣe ||

You have defended Kutsa in fatal fights with Śuśna; you have destroyed Śambara in defence of Atithigva; you have trodden with your foot upon the great Arbuda; frm remote times were you born for the destruction of oppressors.

त्वे विश्वा तविषी सध्र्यग्घिता तव राधः सोमपीथाय हर्षते । तव वज्रश्चिकिते बाह्वोर्हितो वृश्चा शत्रोरव विश्वानि वृष्ण्या ॥

tve viśvā taviṣī sadhryagghitā tava rādhaḥ somapīthāya harṣate | tava vajraścikite bāhvorhito vṛścā śatrorava viśvāni vṛṣṇyā ||

In you, Indra, is all vigour fully concentrated; you will delight to drink the Soma; it is known by us that the thunderbolt is deposited in your hands; cut off all prowess from the foe.

वि जानीह्यार्यान्ये च दस्यवो बर्हिष्मते रन्धया शासदव्रतान् । शाकी भव यजमानस्य चोदिता विश्वेत्ता ते सधमादेषु चाकन ॥

vi jānīhyāryānye ca dasyavo barhiṣmate randhayā śāsadavratān | śākī bhava yajamānasya coditā viśvettā te sadhamādeṣu cākana ||

Discriminate between the Āryas and they who are Dasyus; restraining those who perform no religious rites, compel them to submit to the performer of sacrifices; be you, who are powerful, the encourager of the sacrificer; I am desirous of celebrating all your deeds in ceremonies that give you satisfaction.

अनुव्रताय रन्धयन्नपव्रतानाभूभिरिन्द्रः श्नथयन्ननाभुवः । वृद्धस्य चिद्वर्धतो द्यामिनक्षतः स्तवानो वम्रो वि जघान संदिहः ॥

anuvratāya randhayannapavratānābhūbhirindraḥ śnathayannanābhuvaḥ | vṛddhasya cidvardhato dyāminakṣataḥ stavāno vamro vi jaghāna saṃdihaḥ ||

Indra abides, humbling the neglecters of holy acts in favour of those who observe them; and punishing those who turn away from his worship in favour of those who are present (with their praise); Vamra, while praising him, whether old or adolescent, and spreading through heaven, carried off the accusative ulated (materials of the sacrifice).

तक्षद्यत्त उशना सहसा सहो वि रोदसी मज्मना बाधते शवः । आ त्वा वातस्य नृमणो मनोयुज आ पूर्यमाणमवहन्नभि श्रवः ॥

takṣadyatta uśanā sahasā saho vi rodasī majmanā bādhate śavaḥ | ā tvā vātasya nṛmaṇo manoyuja ā pūryamāṇamavahannabhi śravaḥ ||

If Uṣanās should sharpen your vigour by his own, then would your might terrify by its intensity both heaven and earth. Friend of man, let the will harnessed steeds, with the velocity of the wind, convey you, replete (with vigour), to (partake of the sacrificial) food.

मन्दिष्ट यदुशने काव्ये सचाँ इन्द्रो वङ्कू वङ्कुतराधि तिष्ठति । उग्रो ययिं निरपः स्रोतसासृजद्वि शुष्णस्य दृंहिता ऐरयत्पुरः ॥

mandiṣṭa yaduśane kāvye sacā~ indro vaṅkū vaṅkutarādhi tiṣṭhati | ugro yayiṃ nirapaḥ srotasāsṛjadvi śuṣṇasya dṛṃhitā airayatpuraḥ ||

When Indra is delighted with acceptable hymns, he ascends (his car), drawn by more and more obliquely-curving coursers; fierce, he extracts the waters from the passing (cloud) in a torrent, and has overwhelmed the extensive cities of Śuṣṇa.

आ स्मा रथं वृषपाणेषु तिष्ठसि शार्यातस्य प्रभृता येषु मन्दसे । इन्द्र यथा सुतसोमेषु चाकनोऽनर्वाणं श्लोकमा रोहसे दिवि ॥

ā smā rathaṃ vṛṣapāṇeṣu tiṣṭhasi śāryātasya prabhṛtā yeṣu mandase | indra yathā sutasomeṣu cākano'narvāṇaṃ ślokamā rohase divi ||

You mount your chariot willingly, Indra, for the sake of drinking the libations; such as you delight in having been prepared (at the sacrifice of) Śāryāta; be plural ased with them, as you are gratified by the effused Soma (at the sacrifices) of others, so do you obtain imperishable fame in heaven.

अददा अर्भां महते वचस्यवे कक्षीवते वृचयामिन्द्र सुन्वते । मेनाभवो वृषणश्वस्य सुक्रतो विश्वेत्ता ते सवनेषु प्रवाच्या ॥

adadā arbhāṃ mahate vacasyave kakṣīvate vṛcayāmindra sunvate | menābhavo vṛṣaṇaśvasya sukrato viśvettā te savaneṣu pravācyā ||

You have given, Indra, the youthful Vṛcaya to the aged Kakṣīvat, praising you and offering oblations; you, Śatakratu, were Menā, the daughter of Vṛṣaṇaśva; all these your deeds are to be recited at your worship.

इन्द्रो अश्रायि सुध्यो निरेके पज्रेषु स्तोमो दुर्यो न यूपः । अश्वयुर्गव्यू रथयुर्वसूयुरिन्द्र इद्रायः क्षयति प्रयन्ता ॥

indro aśrāyi sudhyo nireke pajreṣu stomo duryo na yūpaḥ | aśvayurgavyū rathayurvasūyurindra idrāyaḥ kṣayati prayantā ||

Indra has been had recourse to, that he may assist the pious in their distress. Praise by the Pajras, is (as stable) as the post of a doorway. Indra, the giver of riches, who is possessed of (who desires to possess, expecting as gifts from the instrumental tutor of the ceremony) horses, cattle, chariots and wealth is present.

इदं नमो वृषभाय स्वराजे सत्यशुष्माय तवसेऽवाचि । अस्मिन्निन्द्र वृजने सर्ववीराः स्मत्सूरिभिस्तव शर्मन्त्स्याम ॥

idaṃ namo vṛṣabhāya svarāje satyaśuṣmāya tavase'vāci | asminnindra vṛjane sarvavīrāḥ smatsūribhistava śarmantsyāma ||

This adoration is offered to the shedder of rain, the self-resplendent, the possessor of true vigour, the mighty; may we be aided, Indra, in his conflict, by many heroes, and abide in a prosperoud (habitation, bestowed) by you.
