[rv-1-30] • 22 श्लोकाः

आ व इन्द्रं क्रिविं यथा वाजयन्तः शतक्रतुम् । मंहिष्ठं सिञ्च इन्दुभिः ॥

ā va indraṃ kriviṃ yathā vājayantaḥ śatakratum | maṃhiṣṭhaṃ siñca indubhiḥ ||

Let us, who are desirous of food, satisfy this your Indra, who is mighty, and of a hundred sacrifices, with drops (of Soma juice), as a well (is filled)(with water).

शतं वा यः शुचीनां सहस्रं वा समाशिराम् । एदु निम्नं न रीयते ॥

śataṃ vā yaḥ śucīnāṃ sahasraṃ vā samāśirām | edu nimnaṃ na rīyate ||

May he who is (the recipient) of a hundred pure, and of a thousand distilled, (libations), come (to the rite), as water to low (plural ces).

सं यन्मदाय शुष्मिण एना ह्यस्योदरे । समुद्रो न व्यचो दधे ॥

saṃ yanmadāya śuṣmiṇa enā hyasyodare | samudro na vyaco dadhe ||

All which (libations), being accusative ulated for the gratification of the powerful Indra, is contained in his belly, as water in the ocean.

अयमु ते समतसि कपोत इव गर्भधिम् । वचस्तच्चिन्न ओहसे ॥

ayamu te samatasi kapota iva garbhadhim | vacastaccinna ohase ||

This libation is (prepared) for you; you approach it as a pigeon his pregnant (mate), for on that account do you accept our prayer.

स्तोत्रं राधानां पते गिर्वाहो वीर यस्य ते । विभूतिरस्तु सूनृता ॥

stotraṃ rādhānāṃ pate girvāho vīra yasya te | vibhūtirastu sūnṛtā ||

Hero, Indra, lord of affluence, accepter of praise, may genitive ine prosperity be (the reward of him) who offers you laudation.

ऊर्ध्वस्तिष्ठा न ऊतयेऽस्मिन्वाजे शतक्रतो । समन्येषु ब्रवावहै ॥

ūrdhvastiṣṭhā na ūtaye'sminvāje śatakrato | samanyeṣu bravāvahai ||

Rise up, Śatakratu, for our defence in this conflict; we will talk together in other matters.

योगेयोगे तवस्तरं वाजेवाजे हवामहे । सखाय इन्द्रमूतये ॥

yogeyoge tavastaraṃ vājevāje havāmahe | sakhāya indramūtaye ||

On every occasion, in every engagement, we invoke as friends the most powerful Indra for our defence.

आ घा गमद्यदि श्रवत्सहस्रिणीभिरूतिभिः । वाजेभिरुप नो हवम् ॥

ā ghā gamadyadi śravatsahasriṇībhirūtibhiḥ | vājebhirupa no havam ||

If he hear our invocation, let him indeed come to us with numerous bounties, and with (abundant) food.

अनु प्रत्नस्यौकसो हुवे तुविप्रतिं नरम् । यं ते पूर्वं पिता हुवे ॥

anu pratnasyaukaso huve tuvipratiṃ naram | yaṃ te pūrvaṃ pitā huve ||

I invoke the man (Indra), who visits many worshippers from his ancient dwelling-plural ce--you, Indra, whom my father formerly invoked.

तं त्वा वयं विश्ववारा शास्महे पुरुहूत । सखे वसो जरितृभ्यः ॥

taṃ tvā vayaṃ viśvavārā śāsmahe puruhūta | sakhe vaso jaritṛbhyaḥ ||

We implore you as our friend, who are preferred and invoked by all, (to be favourable) to your worshippers, protector of dwellings.

अस्माकं शिप्रिणीनां सोमपाः सोमपाव्नाम् । सखे वज्रिन्त्सखीनाम् ॥

asmākaṃ śipriṇīnāṃ somapāḥ somapāvnām | sakhe vajrintsakhīnām ||

Drinker of Soma juice, wielder of the thunderbolt, O friend, (bestow upon) us, your friends, and drinkers of the Soma juice, (abundance of cows) with projecting jaws. (śipirṇīnām, genitive plural of the feminine nine śipriṇī, having a nose of a jaw; hence gavām and samūha (of cows and a herd) are added].

तथा तदस्तु सोमपाः सखे वज्रिन्तथा कृणु । यथा त उश्मसीष्टये ॥

tathā tadastu somapāḥ sakhe vajrintathā kṛṇu | yathā ta uśmasīṣṭaye ||

So be it, drinker of the Soma juice, wielder of the thunderbolt, our friend, that you will do, through your favour, whatever we desire.

रेवतीर्नः सधमाद इन्द्रे सन्तु तुविवाजाः । क्षुमन्तो याभिर्मदेम ॥

revatīrnaḥ sadhamāda indre santu tuvivājāḥ | kṣumanto yābhirmadema ||

So, Indra, rejoicing along with us, we may have (abundant food) and cows may be ours, robust and rich in milk, with which we may be happy.

आ घ त्वावान्त्मनाप्तः स्तोतृभ्यो धृष्णवियानः । ऋणोरक्षं न चक्र्योः ॥

ā gha tvāvāntmanāptaḥ stotṛbhyo dhṛṣṇaviyānaḥ | ṛṇorakṣaṃ na cakryoḥ ||

O Dhṛṣnu, let some such divinity as you are, self-presented, promptly bestow, when solicited, (bounties) upon your praisers, as (they whirl) the axle of the wheels (of a car).

आ यद्दुवः शतक्रतवा कामं जरितॄणाम् । ऋणोरक्षं न शचीभिः ॥

ā yadduvaḥ śatakratavā kāmaṃ jaritṝṇām | ṛṇorakṣaṃ na śacībhiḥ ||

Such wealth, Śatakratu, as your praisers desire, you bestow upon them, as the axle (revolves) with the movements (of the wagon).

शश्वदिन्द्रः पोप्रुथद्भिर्जिगाय नानदद्भिः शाश्वसद्भिर्धनानि । स नो हिरण्यरथं दंसनावान्त्स नः सनिता सनये स नोऽदात् ॥

śaśvadindraḥ popruthadbhirjigāya nānadadbhiḥ śāśvasadbhirdhanāni | sa no hiraṇyarathaṃ daṃsanāvāntsa naḥ sanitā sanaye sa no'dāt ||

Indra has ever won riches (from his foes), with his champing, neighing, and snorting (steeds); he, the abounding in acts, the bountiful, has given us as a gift a golden chariot.

आश्विनावश्वावत्येषा यातं शवीरया । गोमद्दस्रा हिरण्यवत् ॥

āśvināvaśvāvatyeṣā yātaṃ śavīrayā | gomaddasrā hiraṇyavat ||

Aśvins, come hither, with viands borne or many steeds. Dasrās, (let our dwelling) be filled with cattle and with gold.

समानयोजनो हि वां रथो दस्रावमर्त्यः । समुद्रे अश्विनेयते ॥

samānayojano hi vāṃ ratho dasrāvamartyaḥ | samudre aśvineyate ||

Dasrās, your chariot, harnessed for both alike, is imperishable; it travels, Aśvins, through the air.

न्यघ्न्यस्य मूर्धनि चक्रं रथस्य येमथुः । परि द्यामन्यदीयते ॥

nyaghnyasya mūrdhani cakraṃ rathasya yemathuḥ | pari dyāmanyadīyate ||

You have one wheel on the top of the solid (mountain), while the other revolves in the sky.

कस्त उषः कधप्रिये भुजे मर्तो अमर्त्ये । कं नक्षसे विभावरि ॥

kasta uṣaḥ kadhapriye bhuje marto amartye | kaṃ nakṣase vibhāvari ||

Uṣas, who are plural ased by praise, what mortal enjoy you, immortal? Whom, mighty one, do your affect?

वयं हि ते अमन्मह्यान्तादा पराकात् । अश्वे न चित्रे अरुषि ॥

vayaṃ hi te amanmahyāntādā parākāt | aśve na citre aruṣi ||

Diffusive, many-tinted, brilliant (Uṣas), we know not (your limits), whether they be nigh or remote.

त्वं त्येभिरा गहि वाजेभिर्दुहितर्दिवः । अस्मे रयिं नि धारय ॥

tvaṃ tyebhirā gahi vājebhirduhitardivaḥ | asme rayiṃ ni dhāraya ||

Daughter of heaven, approach with these viands, and perpetuate our wealth.
