[rv-1-25] • 21 श्लोकाः

यच्चिद्धि ते विशो यथा प्र देव वरुण व्रतम् । मिनीमसि द्यविद्यवि ॥

yacciddhi te viśo yathā pra deva varuṇa vratam | minīmasi dyavidyavi ||

Inasmuch as all people commit errors, so do we, divine Varuṇa, daily disfigure your worship by imperfections.

मा नो वधाय हत्नवे जिहीऴानस्य रीरधः । मा हृणानस्य मन्यवे ॥

mā no vadhāya hatnave jihīḻānasya rīradhaḥ | mā hṛṇānasya manyave ||

Make us not the objects of death, through your fatal indignation, through the wrath of you so displeasured.

वि मृऴीकाय ते मनो रथीरश्वं न संदितम् । गीर्भिर्वरुण सीमहि ॥

vi mṛḻīkāya te mano rathīraśvaṃ na saṃditam | gīrbhirvaruṇa sīmahi ||

We soothe your mind, Varuṇa, by our praises, for our good, as a charioteer his weary steed.

परा हि मे विमन्यवः पतन्ति वस्यैष्टये । वयो न वसतीरुप ॥

parā hi me vimanyavaḥ patanti vasyaiṣṭaye | vayo na vasatīrupa ||

My tranquil (meditations) revert to the desire of life, as birds hover around their nests. = vasya iṣṭaye = vasumataḥ, precious (i.e. jīvasya, life's).

कदा क्षत्रश्रियं नरमा वरुणं करामहे । मृऴीकायोरुचक्षसम् ॥

kadā kṣatraśriyaṃ naramā varuṇaṃ karāmahe | mṛḻīkāyorucakṣasam ||

When for our happiness, shall we bring hither Varuṇa, eminent in strength, the guide (of men), the regarder of many?

तदित्समानमाशाते वेनन्ता न प्र युच्छतः । धृतव्रताय दाशुषे ॥

taditsamānamāśāte venantā na pra yucchataḥ | dhṛtavratāya dāśuṣe ||

Partake, (Mitra and Varuṇa), of the common (oblation), being propitious to the giver and celebrator of this pious rite.

वेदा यो वीनां पदमन्तरिक्षेण पतताम् । वेद नावः समुद्रियः ॥

vedā yo vīnāṃ padamantarikṣeṇa patatām | veda nāvaḥ samudriyaḥ ||

He, who knows the path of the birds flying through the air; he, abiding in the ocean, knows (also) the course of ships.

वेद मासो धृतव्रतो द्वादश प्रजावतः । वेदा य उपजायते ॥

veda māso dhṛtavrato dvādaśa prajāvataḥ | vedā ya upajāyate ||

He, who accepting the rites (dedicated to him) knows the twelve months and their productions and that which is supplementarily engendered.

वेद वातस्य वर्तनिमुरोॠष्वस्य बृहतः । वेदा ये अध्यासते ॥

veda vātasya vartanimuroṝṣvasya bṛhataḥ | vedā ye adhyāsate ||

He, who knows the path of the vast, the graceful, and the excellent wind, and who knows those who reside above.

नि षसाद धृतव्रतो वरुणः पस्त्यास्वा । साम्राज्याय सुक्रतुः ॥

ni ṣasāda dhṛtavrato varuṇaḥ pastyāsvā | sāmrājyāya sukratuḥ ||

He, Varuṇa, the acceptor of holy rites, the doer of good deeds, has sat down amongs the (divine) progeny, to exercise supreme dominion (over them).

अतो विश्वान्यद्भुता चिकित्वाँ अभि पश्यति । कृतानि या च कर्त्वा ॥

ato viśvānyadbhutā cikitvā~ abhi paśyati | kṛtāni yā ca kartvā ||

Through him, the sage beholds all the marvels that hav ebeen or will be wrought.

स नो विश्वाहा सुक्रतुरादित्यः सुपथा करत् । प्र ण आयूंषि तारिषत् ॥

sa no viśvāhā sukraturādityaḥ supathā karat | pra ṇa āyūṃṣi tāriṣat ||

May that very wise son of Aditi, keep us all our days in the right path, and prolong our lives.

बिभ्रद्द्रापिं हिरण्ययं वरुणो वस्त निर्णिजम् । परि स्पशो नि षेदिरे ॥

bibhraddrāpiṃ hiraṇyayaṃ varuṇo vasta nirṇijam | pari spaśo ni ṣedire ||

Varuṇa clothes his well-nourished (person n), wearing golden armour, whence the (reflected) rays are spread around.

न यं दिप्सन्ति दिप्सवो न द्रुह्वाणो जनानाम् । न देवमभिमातयः ॥

na yaṃ dipsanti dipsavo na druhvāṇo janānām | na devamabhimātayaḥ ||

A divine (being), whom enemies dare not to offend; nor the oppressors of mankind, nor the iniquitous, (venture to displease).

उत यो मानुषेष्वा यशश्चक्रे असाम्या । अस्माकमुदरेष्वा ॥

uta yo mānuṣeṣvā yaśaścakre asāmyā | asmākamudareṣvā ||

Who has distributed unlimited food to mankind, and especially to us.

परा मे यन्ति धीतयो गावो न गव्यूतीरनु । इच्छन्तीरुरुचक्षसम् ॥

parā me yanti dhītayo gāvo na gavyūtīranu | icchantīrurucakṣasam ||

My thoughts ever turn back to him who is beheld of many, as the kine return to the pastures.

सं नु वोचावहै पुनर्यतो मे मध्वाभृतम् । होतेव क्षदसे प्रियम् ॥

saṃ nu vocāvahai punaryato me madhvābhṛtam | hoteva kṣadase priyam ||

Let us together proclaim that my offering has been prepared, and that you, as if the offerer, accept the valued (oblation).

दर्शं नु विश्वदर्शतं दर्शं रथमधि क्षमि । एता जुषत मे गिरः ॥

darśaṃ nu viśvadarśataṃ darśaṃ rathamadhi kṣami | etā juṣata me giraḥ ||

I have seen him whose appearance is grateful to all; I have beheld his chariot upon earth; he has accepted these my praiseṣ

इमं मे वरुण श्रुधी हवमद्या च मृऴय । त्वामवस्युरा चके ॥

imaṃ me varuṇa śrudhī havamadyā ca mṛḻaya | tvāmavasyurā cake ||

Hear, Varuṇa, this my invocation; make us this day happy; I have appealed to you, hoping for protection.

त्वं विश्वस्य मेधिर दिवश्च ग्मश्च राजसि । स यामनि प्रति श्रुधि ॥

tvaṃ viśvasya medhira divaśca gmaśca rājasi | sa yāmani prati śrudhi ||

You, who are possessed of wisdom, shine over heaven and earth, and all the world; do you hear and reply (to my prayers), with (promise of) prosperity.

उदुत्तमं मुमुग्धि नो वि पाशं मध्यमं चृत । अवाधमानि जीवसे ॥

uduttamaṃ mumugdhi no vi pāśaṃ madhyamaṃ cṛta | avādhamāni jīvase ||

Loose us from the upper bonds, untie the centre and the lower, that we may live.
